The cards give you access to the race as outlined in the Monster Manual... so, theoretically, if the gnome or Shadar-Kai come out with a different set of powers that you don't like, you would have access to them. I know I would've rather played a MM minotaur than the version that came out in Dragon.
Of course, the argument that "latest rules matter most" might come into play here, but just trying to throw something out there for discussion.

Pardon me for a moment as I clear my throat... ahem... cough... *hack, hork, ptui*... according to the CCG you have to use the most up to date rules for any rules item that you use. So even with a promo card you would have to use the updated rules for the race. The rule does not make any exceptions for rules items gained via campaign documentation.

Actually the cards just say you can play one, it doesn't state the source, so you would have to use the most up to date copy of the rules.
meh, I draw some solace from the fact that it will be a while before they invalidate my ORC card.
So, is there anything that people can do with their outdated creation cards? Could there be some special benefit for them?
I use old reward cards for PC Stand Ups.

Step 2: Design stand up on the computer (make sure to print it so that when folded both sides make sense). I put information such as PC's name, my name, PC's race/class, PC's home region, PC's height/weight (although I might start leaving this off), Passive Insight/Perception, languages spoken.
Step 3: Fold the old reward card in half.
Step 4: Print and cut out the stand up. Attach to reward card with glue stick (Elmer's Glue can cause weird ink color shifts).

One of the players in my group mentioned that the CCG states that those races specifically need the promo card to play, and his interpretation is that even if the rules are considered open source you will still need the card because the CCG saying you need the card cant be trumped with a generic rule of them being available, I have not gone back to re-read teh ccg wording (mostly because i dont care about the promo races) but if hes right then perhaps teh promo cards are not worthless after all.

I asked Chris Tulach about this at DDXP. He said that once PHB2 is out and legal for use, I have a card in my gnome's stack freed up.
I just noticed, that the shadar-kai preview that was once scheduled for this friday was taken off of the calendar of release (tho it still listed on the contents page) makes me wonder if maybe we wont get the Sharda-kai after all.
