| #2Dragon9Jun 09, 2009 19:26:36 | Who says the CCG is making it an illegal race? If it's in the compiled issue of Dragon it is RPGA legal, and hence, LFR legal. Period. All dragon stuff (well, most of it) is set for "core." There's a conversion chart showing what FR gods correspond to which core gods. |
| #3_Mithreinmaethor_Jun 09, 2009 19:34:05 | And I think that there is a 4 or 5 page long thread already discussing this. |
| #422_Over_7Jun 10, 2009 18:49:36 | But are Warforged legal for LFR...?![]() |
| #5telvin3dJun 10, 2009 19:28:08 | Yeah, you might want to check out the main LFR forum for lots of good discussion. Also, while most of us are expecting it to be LFR legal, since the article has not been released or compiled yet it may not be. |
| #6SamrinJun 11, 2009 13:54:11 | Shadar Kai are RQ worshippers and are allowed in LFR too. They'll just be reflavored to Kelemvor in FR most likely. |
| #7lochaberJun 11, 2009 16:11:25 | Shadar Kai are RQ worshippers and are allowed in LFR too. They'll just be reflavored to Kelemvor in FR most likely. I think most Shadar-kai I've seen or heard about LFR mods so far are described as fanatical devotees of Shar. Not all of them mind you (certainly not Shadar-kai PC's) but most of the NPC's are Sharrans and/or working for the Netherese. |
| #8Dragon9Jun 11, 2009 16:19:10 | Yes, they are associated with Shar, not Kelemvor. They're linked to the shadowfell and that's Shar's realm. |
| #9sithobi1Jun 11, 2009 18:46:43 | Actually, only the Netherim are linked to Shar. As far as I know, the majority are Kelemvor's people still, just that the enemies tend to be Sharrans, and the Netherim have a larger presence. |
| #10Dragon9Jun 11, 2009 20:07:23 | Most of the Shadovar are still human. However, all have been touched by generations of living in the Shadowfell, and shadar-kai began to appear spontaneously in the generation following Shade’s return to Faerûn. The Spellplague and its reshaping of the cosmos had a strange effect on some Netherese. Their acclimation to centuries in Shadow caused them to transform into or give birth to shadelike beings. Prince Rivalen declared this to be a miracle sent by Shar. He dubbed the changed people shadar-kai, which has become the common term for the race. They really have no connection to Kelemvor whatsoever in the Realms. Soemmay worship him, but they are strongly tied to Netheril, the Shadowfell, and the Shades. The majority of shadar-kai are Netherese. |
| #11anubis_reynardJun 12, 2009 0:19:58 | Interview with the creator of Revanants: "Revenants are souls of the dead returned to a quasi-life by the Raven Queen, but they do not appear as undead horrors or even anything like their former selves. When the Raven Queen reincarnates souls, they exist as her special creations, and they have the bodies of her choosing." Since Raven queen converts to Kelemvor, that should be most of our answer. |
| #12sithobi1Jun 12, 2009 0:54:20 | Hah! Kelemvor hand-created the Revenants. Perfect for causing mental distress to those Kelemvorites. |
| #13bgibbonsJun 12, 2009 2:24:37 | Interview with the creator of Revanants: No. Just... no. Matching up Realms deities to core ones is meant as a quick-and-dirty patch, not as full equivalence. Basically, as long as one (often the most important) aspect of a core deity matched, that was considered close enough. If you were expecting something more, expect to be disappointed. Sehanine is the goddess of the moon and autumn, patron of trickery and illusions, and goddess of love. Since the moon was seen as her most important aspect, Selune was picked as her equivalent. Picking any of her other aspects would have ended up with another deity. Reading the deity equivalence table as declaring that, say, Selune is now the goddess of love and trickery, requires a degree of willful ignorance that borders on idiocy. That Kelemvor and the Raven Queen are both deities of death is quite true; to declare that their equivalence goes any further than that is foolish. |
| #14ibixatJun 12, 2009 2:43:55 | Simple fix, Kelemvor rules over the land of the dead, every so often a petitioner comes through with a deed in life they were destined to do that was so great but somehow was killed before it could be achieved, Kelemvor takes this soul and sends them back as a revenant. The catch being that the new form doesn't have it's past life experiences, but if the goal was truly that great this soul would gravitate towards that destiny anyway and do the deed that needs done eventually etc. Anyway, there are plenty of ways to fit them in as "undead" or "reborn" or whatever the heck you want to call them. |
| #15anubis_reynardJun 12, 2009 3:06:53 | That Kelemvor and the Raven Queen are both deities of death is quite true; to declare that their equivalence goes any further than that is foolish. But it doesn't have to go any further than that. As god/godess of death, the creation of Revenants is their- and ONLY their- purview. The gods can do a bit of backroom dealing and horse trading, but only Kel can make them. |
| #16Madfox11Jun 12, 2009 3:21:17 | Interview with the creator of Revanants: Whether or not Kelemvor is the exact equivalent of the Raven Queen should not be the point of debate. There are some big differences between the two. Of course, since revenants are reincarnated souls send back to finish a specific task they would not be undead by the definition of Kalemvor and the whole fanatic Kelemvor discussion feels a bit moot. The revenants have not remained on the world after there time has come. They in fact died too early and somebody, whether Kelemvor or another deity, sends them back because of it. |
| #17starbogJun 12, 2009 3:44:12 | Of course, since revenants are reincarnated souls send back to finish a specific task they would not be undead by the definition of Kalemvor and the whole fanatic Kelemvor discussion feels a bit moot. They would have to come back as living creatures to follow the dictates of Kelemvorite Dogma. |
| #18kinevonJun 12, 2009 4:03:56 | They would have to come back as living creatures to follow the dictates of Kelemvorite Dogma. Of course not. As long as you aren't, technically, undead, you don't have to be living. I could see Kelemvor as having no issues at all with constructs in any fashion. Oh, and StarBog, I hope your Cleric of Kelemvor never dies, as he (she?) would not be able to be raised, since that would, obviously, violate the spirit of being a fundamentalist Cleric of Kelemvor. And never use any of those 30th level (or lower) abilities that only kick in when you die. ::shrug:: YMMV |
| #19ibixatJun 12, 2009 4:27:10 | Warfoged - Living Construct Revenant - Living Undead Bet me =P |
| #20starbogJun 12, 2009 8:12:09 | Of course not. As long as you aren't, technically, undead, you don't have to be living. I could see Kelemvor as having no issues at all with constructs in any fashion. I don't think anyone ever said that he did. But as the next post says, Revenants aren't constructs. They are undead. And Kelemvor has, to put it mildly, a problem with undead. Oh, and StarBog, I hope your Cleric of Kelemvor never dies, as he (she?) would not be able to be raised, since that would, obviously, violate the spirit of being a fundamentalist Cleric of Kelemvor. Kelemvorite dogma (look at p. 33 of 3.5 Faiths and Pantheons) states that in times of great need clergy of Kelemvor do ressurrect past heroes. If Asi dies, my view is that she's dead and finished unless she is raised by a follower of Kelemvor (though a MyRealms adventure for example) And never use any of those 30th level (or lower) abilities that only kick in when you die. That's why I have other characters though. Abilities are second fiddle to lore, no matter how "kewl" they are. |
| #21anubis_reynardJun 12, 2009 12:25:29 | As shown in the main thread, the creator answered a question by email, including a little tidbit: Revanants ARE considered living creatures. They are also considered undead. AND that this means Kelemvor's church is still trying to decide if they are abominations or not. |
| #22WolfStar76Jun 12, 2009 12:45:10 | As shown in the main thread, the creator answered a question by email, including a little tidbit: Revanants ARE considered living creatures. They are also considered undead. AND that this means Kelemvor's church is still trying to decide if they are abominations or not. Or at least - that's one potential take. Again, the article isn't out, and Matt's e-mail shouldn't be assumed to the "the bible" on Revnants. However, it may provide a little additional insight into the designer's intentions. ![]() If nothing else, the quote I provided from Matt can give the "die hard Kelemvorites" a "loophole" by which - if they even recognize a Revenant - to be wary of them as being both partially alive AND partially dead/undead. But that "half-life" might well be the part that "wins" in the mind of the cleric - as he holds his holy symbol tight, just waiting - WAITING! - for that Revenant-freak to cross a line. . . |
| #23bgibbonsJun 12, 2009 15:34:06 | If nothing else, the quote I provided from Matt can give the "die hard Kelemvorites" a "loophole" by which - if they even recognize a Revenant - to be wary of them as being both partially alive AND partially dead/undead. I'm waiting to see the actual article before deciding what I think of this addition, but I would think most Kelemvorites would apply a simple test--does it hurt when the cleric uses Turn Undead or, for the more devoted, Kelemvor's Judgment? (Both, of course, only hurt undead and do so even on a miss.) If it passes Kelemvor's Judgment, then who are you to argue with your god? If it fails Kelemvor's Judgment, then that's a pretty clear sign. |
| #24ibixatJun 13, 2009 8:03:01 | I'm waiting to see the actual article before deciding what I think of this addition, but I would think most Kelemvorites would apply a simple test--does it hurt when the cleric uses Turn Undead or, for the more devoted, Kelemvor's Judgment? Too bad the test would be invalidated if the player just said "sorry, you can't try that on me" since if it would damage, he can just say no =P |
| #25Dragon9Jun 13, 2009 10:04:59 | I suspect that Revenants can't be turned. It would cause too many problems when you're in a party with a cleric. Especially in Epic tier. Close burst 8? "No! wait! I haven't reached minimum safe distance!" :P We shall see on Monday. |
| #26bgibbonsJun 13, 2009 10:44:34 | Too bad the test would be invalidated if the player just said "sorry, you can't try that on me" since if it would damage, he can just say no =P We won't start that discussion up again, but if that's the way the DM interprets that guideline, it's simple to deal with. If the prospective party member refuses to face Kelemvor's Judgment, that in and of itself is an answer. |
| #27kinevonJun 14, 2009 19:50:24 | We won't start that discussion up again, but if that's the way the DM interprets that guideline, it's simple to deal with. If the prospective party member refuses to face Kelemvor's Judgment, that in and of itself is an answer. Yes, that my diefic beliefs are that Kelemvor, or his clerics, are ****-retentive? There are clerics that I am not too certain that my normal PCs would want to be healed by, to be honest. Some players do NOT know how to play a character well. |
| #28anubis_reynardJun 14, 2009 23:38:23 | I am totally going to make a Warforged-Soul Revanant cleric of Kelemvor. :p Hah! I DID have a soul! |
| #29ibixatJun 15, 2009 0:14:59 | I am totally going to make a Warforged-Soul Revanant cleric of Kelemvor. :p But are you going the extra mile and buying an Ornithopter? My friends and I want to make 6 identical melee clerics all MC to warlord, take guileful switch and ride ornithopters into battle. We figure at level 8 if we all have action points and at least one person wins initiative we can get 18 standard actions before the enemies get to go. |
| #30pedrJun 15, 2009 2:45:00 | Well, Revenants are undead. They are also living creatures. In a brief skim of the article I can't see anything making them immune to turning (etc) which could prove interesting! |
| #31booleanJun 15, 2009 2:58:17 | Well, Revenants are undead. They are also living creatures. In a brief skim of the article I can't see anything making them immune to turning (etc) which could prove interesting! Are they humanoids? If so, you could be a Dhampyr Revenant! |
| #32anubis_reynardJun 15, 2009 3:05:48 | I'm more interested in how a revanant who was a gnoll in life can load on monsterous racial feats and basically become a Ghoul. (Claws, eating of the dead, improved sence of smell...) I should totally make a RPGA legal ghoul. |
| #33Dragon9Jun 15, 2009 12:59:10 | Are they humanoids? If so, you could be a Dhampyr Revenant! Yes, they are humanoid, and yes, they also are living creatures. So yes, you can have a Dhampyr Revenant. I'm more interested in how a revanant who was a gnoll in life can load on monsterous racial feats and basically become a Ghoul. (Claws, eating of the dead, improved sence of smell...) Unfortunately, there's no Gnoll Soul feat for the Revenant. So there is currently no way to get the Gnoll racial features as a Revenant. |
| #34matblack76Jun 15, 2009 13:02:39 | Yes, they are humanoid, and yes, they also are living creatures. So yes, you can have a Dhampyr Revenant. but you could take the Claw Fighter, Carrion Eater, and Gnoll Tracker racial feats. |
| #35Dragon9Jun 15, 2009 13:05:11 | Right, right... those werent' given via racial features... that's what I get for not playign a Gnoll. ;) |
