Ok so for my Sunday game I am bringing my WF Barbarian, and a Human Wizard.

I plan on using the Barb unless there is something unforeseen happening between now and then.

My backstory for him is that he was developed as a Guardian for Myth Drannor ( or Some other ancient elven power place) After years of service, and the introduction of the Spellplague he gained sentience. The only places he has known were the outer reaches of the mythals stretch where he was a guardian. Upon gaining sentience he wandered the forests around his charge, living "off the land". His new found emotions would often get the better of him, and he was a very chaotic creature for some time.

A wandering Clan, Clan Dukachi to be exact, came across him while he was patrolling his land. They approached him, offering education, and answers. He gladly accepted, and in exchange for their knowledge he granted them protection. After years of tutelage, his friends have gotten old, and their children aren't plagued with the same adventurer's spirit as their parents.

So he strikes out seeking new, and unique experiences to better his understanding of the world.

I was thinking of making him from Dalelands, I think I remember Myth Drannor being near there. However, I'm not sure if its a great fit.

Any ideas ?

Yes, the Dalelands are "next door" to the forest of Cormanthor, which is where Myth Drannor is located.

I'd say it's as good a fit as any.

I admit to confusion. Why not Myth Drannor as the background? It covers more than just the city, if that's what made you think it would be inappropriate...

I dunno, Myth Drannor is so overused as "the" place for elven ruins etc. I expanded my search to Gray Vale, and Durpar too. I know there has to be other ancient elven ruins, and mythals too. =/

There's always Undrentide. ;) Of course, acccording to legend, it was infested with a spelltwisted medusa, and eventually (usually) destroyed when it took off after the first time it fell.

How about Evereska instead of Myth Drannor?
Edit: Oh right - no background for that one yet :P But a good place if you don't mind the actual benefits.

I am prepping a new Druid Dwarf (when it becomes legal)..

I like the old jungle dwarves from chult.. and I was wondering what region would be apropriate now.

FYI: They are "uncivilized" jungle dwellers that do NOT wear clothing.. only a long braided beard, hides, guantlets & helms. And they all share the same patron diety "Thard Harr" who is essentially a "smart" beast empowered with divine power.

There are a few backgrounds that could work. Vilhon Wilds, Great Dale, and Moonshae come to mind. Several backgrounds are from areas with forest... but none with Jungle AFAIK.

I believe Amn and Baldur's Gate have outposts in Chult. Though taking those backgrounds would imply you spend at least several years in their compounds.
There is the elven realm near Halruaa - isn't that in the FRPG as well (don't have my copy here)?

You have to pick a background, not a region. So regions without backgrounds are not available to pick.

Honestly, is anyone gona throw a fit if I show up at a table with a region that gives me no benifit?

Nope, not me. I seriously doubt anyone would where I play, but whenever you have a big enough group of DMs, I suspect you can find someone who will complain if it is rubbed in their faces*. I would just say, 'Oh, well he isn't from there then, he is .' for that game, then forget about it. The RPGA police aren't coming after you for being from Chult.

* Most DMs will never ask where you are from, it is nice when they do, but rare at least around here.

You are required to pick a region. You cannot pick a region that is not listed in the Backgrounds section of the FRPG.

That said, considering that I have yet to play at a table that did not have an illegal character at it, outside of my home group, most DMs either don't know, don't care or don't want the hassle of enforcing the rules, so it's unlikely you're going to get called on it any time soon.

Keep in mind, also, that your regional background is not necessarily the region in which you were born, it's merely the one that "defines your cultural heritage" and that, in some sense, you are "from".

You are free to justify your listed background as being the region you lived in after leaving Chult or where you received some kind of training. Or, conversely, it can be the region where you were born, before you ended up, Tarzan-like, growing up in the jungles of Chult. Since you're presumably not commuting back and forth to Chult between adventures, it can be wherever you've made your home on the mainland.

You have several options other than just listing "Chult" on your character sheet, and considering that doing so has the possibility of, eventually, causing you a problem, it would probably be best to consider them.

A very good point and an good solution that avoids any fuss later.

After reading the entry for Durpar, I think it is probably my best fit.. Any mention of a "shadowy beast lord" should attract a true follower of Thard Harr.

"Guided by Thard Harr towards Durpar, to fulfill my destiny. Without knowing exactly what that destiny might be I must seek every oportunity to follow the ways of my god."

It is not am obligation afaik. You do NOT have to pick a background, it's an option. IF you pick a background, though, it has to be from the FRPG (and not, say, Dragon).
Otherwise, people who do not own the FRPG cannot play LFR.

Select a character background. Choose one of regions found in the Backgrounds chapter of the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide for your character; it’s the place where they hail from, might define their personality or looks, and gives them a small game benefit. Choosing a background that offers regional adventures may provide you with additional benefits as you play those adventures. The regions that have adventures in Living Forgotten Realms are: Aglarond, Akanûl, Baldur’s Gate, Cormyr, Dalelands, Dragon Coast, East Rift, Impiltur, Luruar, Moonshae Isles, Tymanther, and Waterdeep. For information on these regions, visit www.wizards.com/rpga and click on the “Living Forgotten Realms” or “Living Realms” links, download the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide Preview (available in the same place as above), or pick up a copy of the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide at your local store. Character backgrounds from sources other than the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide are not legal for Living Forgotten Realms play. Once you’ve chosen a region for your character, that choice remains for the rest of your character’s life. It’s as much a part of your character as its race.

Not "You may select", but "Select", so not, IMO, an option but a requirement, unlike choosing a deity for a non-divine-powered PC. While the FRPG preview with the information on the basic 12 regions is no longer available for download, the basic information is now on the Regions page (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lfrx/regions), so those are legal & free for anyone.

I asked the same thing back at the start of the campaign. Since my new (at the time) PC was a descendant of my old LC PC, I wanted him to be from Ravens Bluff (Vesperin). I was told very pointedly by the PTB that Vesperin was not a legal background, so I chose Aglarond (I live in Florida).

Now that he's 11th level and I've chosen his Paragon Path (Sword Coast Corsair), he really calls no region home, but spends a lot of time on the Pirate Isle when not at sea. He still has the Aglarond background, but simply because it's where he fences his plunder.

The region doesn't matter...the story behind the choice does
