| #1seed_modeJun 01, 2008 21:22:33 | To begin, I am a 5 Druid / 1 Beastmaster looking for item suggestion for my Tiger Animal Companion. I am thinking of crafting an Amulet of Mighty Fists for the tiger to get him +1 to all his natural attacks for bypassing DR/magic. I'm not sure whether this will work on different tables but the DM I played with usually ruled it possible. This will also free up one of two third level spell slot which is usually used to prepare Greater Magic Fang for that purpose. Now, Reins of Ascension is an MIC item that has 3 charges per day which can be used for different effect such as bonus to jump checks, flight for 5 rounds and flight for 1 round at double move speed. I have just gotten adventure access to it via AR. It sounds like a very niffy item as Druids don't get a lot of flight options readily available for his animal companion. I have just enough cash for either one of the items. Both of them cost around the same. (Crafting for Amulet, buying for Reins) So my question to you all, dear experienced players, is that which item so I get and why. Right now I'm leaning towards the reins because the Amulet is open access ;) but I did like to hear what you think. Any suggestions? Edit: I am two adventures away from leveling, in case this is of any importance. |
| #2lupoJun 02, 2008 3:28:23 | To begin, I am a 5 Druid / 1 Beastmaster looking for item suggestion for my Tiger Animal Companion. buy the reigns - unslotted (or non-standard slotted) items are just to good . . . . . . . . and craft your kitty an amulet of health as soon as you have the cash. the next thing you should try to get your greedy fingers onto is either a rod of extend [lesser] or a PoP 3rd. as you are only caster level 6 you have to be a little peculiar with your magic fang [greater], so try to get the rod of extend [lesser] as soon as possible. ciao martin m. ps: my little halfling druid 12 would soooooooooooo love to have access to those reigns - so far he uses fly [swift] to get his kitty airborne - most of the time this is enough but having an extra gadget for this would surely be nice. |
| #3umiskatonicJun 02, 2008 12:44:56 | You only have two 3rd level spells...now. Maybe those seem like high level spells...now. In time, you'll be thankful that you have something useful to do with a lowly 3rd level spell. You'll only get better at spellcasting in the future. In the meantime, you'll be getting all kinds of use out of the Reins. That's a great item, it does something which is very difficult for a druid to pull off, and you'll never see one again. Besides, imagine the look on a the flying archer's face face when the tiger below him pounces 60' straight up and grabs him. Meanwhile, you're able to craft that amulet AT ANY TIME. Don't think for a minute that you'll never have gold again. You're just about to hit the point where you earn more gold than Xp, which is where you can really grab some cash. If you decide you need the amulet, you can just make it later. |
| #4timlagorJun 02, 2008 18:17:33 | You need perfect flight to charge upwards at most tables. |
| #5seed_modeJun 02, 2008 21:26:26 | Thanks for you input guys. I will be buying the Reins then. @Lupo as you are only caster level 6 you have to be a little peculiar with your magic fang [greater] I don't quite understand what you mean here , care to explain a bit?@UMiskatonic You are right, looking at the compiled spell list, druid have pitifully few ways of getting his pet airborne. And my DM just confirmed that I cannot use that AR as access to craft them .@Timlagor Yeah most table ruled that. |
| #6timlagorJun 03, 2008 1:42:33 | I think he meant a little particular ..ie careful/selective. |
| #7lupoJun 03, 2008 2:13:27 | I think he meant a little particular ..ie careful/selective. uhps, yes, thanks "particular" was meant ![]() the problem at the moment - as a level 6 caster and with only 2 (maybe 3) level 3 slots - you can't cast magic fang [greater] all day long, so you have to cast it CLOSE to a combat encounter and sometimes something that looks like CLOSE to a combat encounter is the wrong moment . . . . . . . just buy some scrolls of magic fang, or even one with magic fang [greater]. ciao martin m. |
| #8timlagorJun 03, 2008 2:58:24 | You also don't have to have magic weapons for everything at APL6 |
| #9seed_modeJun 03, 2008 3:06:06 | DRs are nasty things that shuts down the kitty's damage output most of the time. Granted, I could still have it use improve grab and hold it for the party to hit it, but it does work all the time (equal sized enemies or larger, monsters with high strength). While we are at it, does anyone know where I could find stuff for the kitty that bypasses material DRs like silver and cold iron? |
| #10lupoJun 03, 2008 6:52:52 | DRs are nasty things that shuts down the kitty's damage output most of the time. when the druid/beastmaster reaches 12th level for animal companion regards, just take power attack - i haven't seen anything apart from a long outdated access for upgrading ones animal companion to celestial ONCE - played that module of course with the wrong character . . . . ciao martin m. |
| #11timlagorJun 03, 2008 19:57:47 | My point is that DR is still relatively rare at APL6 |
| #12umiskatonicJun 03, 2008 20:15:54 | Can you cover a tiger with silversheen? I have no idea if that works. But yes, Power attack is the answer you are looking for. And yes, I know that I said 'straight up', but I recognize that you need to travel upward at an angle, and that movement is halved, etc, etc. I still think a flying tiger is awesome, even at a 30-degree angle |
| #13seed_modeJun 03, 2008 21:26:55 | Lol, a silver tiger. Guess I will pop power attack after I get multi-attack, and change it into something else once the tiger gets it free form Druid leveling. Any ideas on how to pump up the kitty's abysmal will save? The Devotion bonus only apply to enchantment effects. Would like to have a universally working solution on this. Guess I'm really greedy.:P |
| #14timlagorJun 04, 2008 2:43:39 | No argument that flight is great -just didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea. I'm pretty certain that Silversheen has to be applied to a metal weapon. |
| #15lupoJun 04, 2008 3:47:54 | No argument that flight is great -just didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea. from the SRD: Silversheen: This substance can be applied to a weapon as a standard action. It will give the weapon the properties of alchemical silver for 1 hour, replacing the properties of any other special material it might have. One vial will coat a single melee weapon or 20 units of ammunition. Faint transmutation; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item; Price 250 gp. another one: A monk’s unarmed strike is treated both as a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons. i hope that PHB and DMG don't have different wordings . . . . so silversheen might be used by a monk's unarmed attacks but not for an animal companion. animal growth: "The spell also grants each subject damage reduction 10/magic and a +4 resistance bonus on saving throws." as a creature gets the ability to overcome its own damage reduction this would work too. once i have sen "Tanar'ri Stompers" - +1 one magical, cold iron horseshoes but nothing else so far. ciao martin m. |

Would like to have a universally working solution on this. You could cast dominate animal, and order it around. That should override most other effects, I think. Other ideas I had: Handing it heroes' feast scraps under the table would prevent fear effects, owl's wisdom would help a bit, as might protection from evil (somebody can cast this at your table, just lend them a pearl 1), remove fear is another common 1st level spell, ... |
| #17lupoJun 05, 2008 2:31:06 | You could cast dominate animal, and order it around. That should override most other effects, I think. my druid's kitty sports a nice saddle blanket . . . . cloak of protetcion +2 :D yea, heroes' feast scraps go to all animals, familiars and special mounts. the will save is one reason to take a dire animal - sometimes - they tend to have a generic +3 to their will save, compared to normal animals. ok, it takes some time to get a dire tiger ![]() ciao martin m. |
