What makes a fighter-type a BBDF?

Are there a set of feats, class(es), and equipment that promotes doing massive damage quickly?

I am looking for ways to improve my fighter's damage output, as I seem to be behind the curve already.

Things that I know of to that end:
Power Attack
Belt of Giant Strength (including Gauntlets of Ogre Power)
High Strength
Using a 2-handed weapon (increases damage from Str & PA)
Weapon enhancements, especially generic ones (e.g. Flaming)

My PC currently uses a spiked chain. Is it worth spending a feat on Improved Buckler Defense to improve his abysmal AC, or does table variation neuter that for 2-handed weapons?

Just to give an idea of his current status:
Fighter 4/Barbarian 1
Human
Str 16 Dex 17 Con 12 Int 10 Wis 10 Char 8
Feats:
H, 1 & F1B: Iron Will, Power Attack & Combat Reflexes
F2B: Improved Unarmed Strike
3: Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Spiked Chain
F4B: Weapon Focus: Spiked Chain

Proposed 6
Class: Swashbuckler for Weapon Finesse
Feat: Leadership or Frozen Berserker (depending on whether I want to take a lizardfolk cohort or not)

At 7th level, either way, I will qualify for Exotic Weapon Master. If I take Frozen Berserker, I will qualify (in all respects) for Frostrager, including access.

My current plan is to take all 3 levels of EWM and all 5 levels of Frostrager, then decide, if I get that far before the campaign ends, what to take as my 15th character level class.

Well, right there, having both of those scores in double-digits automatically disqualifies you for the "D" part. ;)

Okay, you've got several issues:
Aiming at being a BDF, but your Dex is higher than your Str. This is a big problem for you as even non-tweaked Fighters will have an 18 Strength at 8th and you won't. If you don't take Extra Rage, in many LG mods, you'll be stuck at 18 Str when the semi-tweaked Fighters are swinging with a 28 Str - that represents an extra 17 points of damage per swing when fully converted to Power Attack...

Wood Elf stats as a human. Not much you can do about this now.

Entering a PrC that needs lots of Rages per day and you only have 1. It also specializes in doing an unarmed attack routine and you're focusing on Spiked Chain instead. EWM is a great PrC. Frostrager is a good one with strong flavor. They don't really mesh.

Here are your current actual feat needs:
Weapon Specialization/Melee Weapon Mastery(PHB II)
Frozen Berserker
Extra Rage

It isn't worth it to enter Frostrager until you get Extra Rage. I'd do the following to get both to work without really sacrificing damage:

6: Fighter 5: Extra Rage
7: Exotic Weapon Master 1: Flurry
8: Fighter 6: WS: Spiked Chain: Dex 18(this one kills me, but you might not make 12th by the end of LG)
9: Fighter 7: Frozen Berserker
10: Fighter 8: Melee Weapon Mastery
11: Frozen Berserker
12: FB 2: Mad Foam Rager: Str 17(maybe you get a book?)
13: FB 3
14: FB 4
15: FB 5

I agree with MwaO: you don't need Weapon Finesse and you do need Extra Rage. Weapon Spec, Melee Weapon Mastery and EWM Flurry will boost your damage significantly. Pick up Boots of Speed if you get access: you won't always have a Haste-caster in the party, especially at higher levels.

Well, on the Extra Rage, I do have the "One More Time" card, if that has any effect.

I also have access to some of the nonc feats from Frostburn and Heroes of Battle, if any of those are worth slotting in.

And what should the starting stats be for a BBDF?

Well, on the Extra Rage, I do have the "One More Time" card, if that has any effect.

The problem with the One More Time card is that it still won't work when you have a 3 combats and out mod or Adaptables where you could fight significantly more combats than that. And it is a great card, but it also means you're not taking other cards.

And if you're getting to the point where you could be concerned about the longer term issues of your build, you're going to have to play a bunch of adaptables.

And what should the starting stats be for a BBDF?

A BDF should put 10 points into Str, 6 into Dex, and 6 into Con. Then spend the remaining 6 points on their specialization(which could end up being Str, Dex, or Con). Then level Str. This specialization is something where you have feats that require that stat to be that high(or if you can't stand 8s, you get all 10s). The 6 points into Dex could be optional, especially if your specialization requires a lot of mental stats.

Which is where one of your problems crop up - Dex is your specialization, but you don't have any feats that really support having higher than a 14. Combat Reflexes does a little, but...and then you leveled Dex instead of Str. So the guy who took a 16/14/14/10/12/8 is going to have an 18 Str when you have a 16 Str.

Okay, assume a different (and more correct to the original build) set of feats, but the same stats:
1: Fighter: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot and Weapon Focus: Longbow
2: Fighter: Rapid Shot
3: Fighter: Coordinated Shot
4: Fighter: EWP: Spiked Chain
5: Barbarian: none
Retrain Combat Reflexes to Coordinated Shot

Should I go into at 6th level with this feat setup, or get a few more Fighter levels first, or avoid OBI entirely?

Also, this PC has access to Coordinated Shot or Ready Shot from Heroes of Battle (1 of them, once) from one AR; and either of those or Plunging Shot (1 of them, once) from a different AR.

He also has access to Altitude Adaptation, Cold Endurance, or Mountaineer (1 of them, once) from an AR, as well. None of these seem really well-suited for an archer, although, being from the Pale, some of them seem useful for survival in the area...

2: Fighter: Rapid Shot

4: Fighter: EWP: Spiked Chain

Retrain Combat Reflexes to Coordinated Shot

First rule of being an effective fighter:

Thou shalt not take uneven fighter levels.

Second Rule:

Pick something that you will do and DO IT. If you want to be an archer, be an archer. If you want to produce damage, do that. Thou should decide.

Third rule:
Thou shalt not take uneven fighter levels

Fourth rule:

Verily, thou shalt take weapon specialisation and weapon mastery

Fifth rule:

Thou shalt not take uneven fighter levels

Sixth rule:
THERE IS NO RULE SIX!

Seventh rule:

Thou Shalt not take uneven fighter levels.

But more seriously, your fighter will not be very good if you try to do a whole range of things.

There is a common misconception that the spiked chain is this amazing weapon that is broken just by you having one, thereby you will win every fight. They require a LOT of feat chains, the right abilities, and canny playing to work really well. Otherwise you are just wasting the weapon.

Mommy's advice is sound (as always). Extra rage is absolutely necessary, and one of the 'real' rules for taking a level of barbarian.

If you are going to be an archer than you need to lose the spiked chain completely, and that would take too long to do.

In all the builds you post, you get really distracted and change your mind, you need to stick with a concept and fine tune it for it to be effective. Trying to be a jack of all trades is darn hard, especially not being a caster, and its better to be good at SOMETHING than mediocre at a lot of things.

P.S: hold the line could be a decent choice if you have combat reflexes.

Archers are reasonably straightforward in terms of feat choices - if you get 4 levels of Fighter, you want to put yourself on the route to get Ranged Weapon Mastery and Improved Precise Shot. Coordinated Shot isn't a horrible feat, but it eventually gets replaced. I wouldn't retrain into it.

First off - get rid of EWP: Spiked Chain for WS: Longbow - you're giving up the ability to bypass DR for something you're unlikely to use. I'd use the 3rd level feat for a prestige class you want to get into. Pious Templar of Phaulkon would work well for you.

Something like this:
1: Fighter: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot and Weapon Focus: Longbow
2: Fighter: Rapid Shot
3: Fighter: True Believer
4: Fighter: WS: Longbow
5: Barbarian: none
6: Pious Templar 1: Extra Rage
7: Pious Templar 2
8: Pious Templar 3: WS: Longbow(Retrain level 4 feat into something else)
9: OotBI 1: Ranged Weapon Mastery
10: OotBI 2
11: Pious Templar 4: Improved Precise Shot

So, I should retrain EWP: Spiked Chain to Weapon Specialization: Longbow. That shouldn't take all that long to do, just something to include when I go to 6th level.

My retrain note was training from Combat Reflexes into Coordinated Shot, my bad being confused.

I currently have 4 fighter levels. That is an EVEN number. So, do I take an even number more, to go for Ranged Weapon Mastery, or do I just go straight into Order of the Bow Initiate, which PrC name somehow managed to get left out of my last post.

Or do I just stay out of Order of the Bow Initiate entirely, concentrating on Fighter and/or Barbarian? Or is there another PrC that is good for archer-types? I know I don't qualify for Cragtop Archer, and those seem to be the only ones that are Open...

By the way, I do get confused easily, as I was looking at my ARs to see which of the three large feat lists were feats I actually could qualify for. Altitude Adaptation I can qualify for, Beckon the Frozen I could not. And I mainly listed ones that work for archers, like the Coordinated Shot feat.

And I tend to get distracted easily, so all these NPCs who wind up whomping on my characters with spiked chains caught my eye.

On the Pious Templar route: my character is from the Pale, and is actually a worshipper of the regional diety, Pholtus. Pholtus's favored weapon, god help me, is the quarterstaff. That one, at least, is waaay too far of my preferred path.

Not sure how I would justify retraining a 3rd level feat into True Believer for a different god than he has worshipped since he was created... Especially a Chaotic god. Then again, my character is at least NG, not LG. But he is Oeridian, not Suel. Sigh.

Then again, Ehlonna is a distinct possibility, especially since he has yearned for the quiver since he was young...

Let me think about that...

Personal gripe here about some spiked chain fighters ...

I have now played at two separate tables at cons that had a supposedly broken, tricked-out spiked chain fighter fronting the party. On both occasions, the fighter was extremely successful in tripping / keeping the baddies on the floor. The monsters then fought from prone and cleaned the clock of the front line because the spiker could not do enough damage do put the baddie out of our misery.

I do not know whether the characters in question put too much effort into finesse, or were sub-standard with feat choices or what (did not have time to look as we had run out of time and the next slot was starting), but an iconic greatsword-wielding fighter would have worked just fine.

The moral of the story … make sure you are not such a one trick pony that you can’t contribute when that one trick doesn’t work so well.

P.S. There is a spiked chain fighter I have played with in our region who is very effective in every situation we have come across …

9: OotBI 1: Ranged Weapon Mastery
10: OotBI 2
11: Pious Templar 4: Improved Precise Shot

Only one problem: I won't have a 19 Dex until 12th level, with the 3rd stat bump.

8: Pious Templar 3: WS: Longbow (Retrain level 4 feat into Extra Smiting)
9: OotBI 1: Ranged Weapon Mastery: Piercing
10: OotBI 2
11: Pious Templar 4: Penetrating Shot
12: Pious Templar 5: Dex +1; Improved Precise Shot (Ability score increase comes before choosing a feat)

Other options for the 4th level feat retrain:
Improved Buckler Defense (is a bow considered a weapon in your off hand?)
Power Critical: Longbow
Craft Wondrous Item

Other options for the 11th level bonus feat:
Manyshot
Improved Critical: Longbow (if I don't have access to Keen)
Any of the 4th level retrain feats not taken above
Greater Resilience
Extra Rage (#2)
Craft Magic Arms & Armor

13: Pious Templar 6
14: Pious Templar 7
15: Pious Templar 8: 2 feats

15th level feats:
Feats above not taken previously
Driving Attack (says Piercing, nothing about melee only)

I just need to make sure I get a Periapt of Wisdom +2 before I reach 7th level, and increase it to +4 before 12th level, and I could actually use the spells, too. Heh.

It's a shame so many useful magic items use that neck slot, though. Wis, Con, and Natural AC just for a start.

Hmmm. Would Craft Wondrous Items and/or Craft Magic Arms & Armor be useful enough for this character to burn a feat on?

Improved Precise Shot. Coordinated Shot means you get Weapon Specialization at 8th instead of 4th. If you take WS at 4th instead, when you'd retrain Weapon Specialization at 8th as my suggested build says, you'd basically be renting Coordinated Shot at a cost of 1100 gold for 3 levels.

Very few archers have significant problems hitting. They do have problems bypassing DR.

As my build uses Pious Templar 4 to get Improved Precise Shot at 11th(which you can do with a Dex Item of any kind), I don't think Coordinated Shot is worth that much.

Okay, thanks. I forgot that Improved Precise Shot says cover less than total. Ssssss. That is the sound of my mind frying. Okay, so Gloves of Dexterity, which are, of course, on my list, before 11th level.

And, to the further sound of my brain frying, is it worth it to keep my current spiked chain, even non-proficient, in order to use the trip attack? Due to Str bonus (+3) and masterwork (+1), it looks like the touch attack would be made at my normal BAB, so it should still be able to hit most opponents, and my trip roll would be at +5, and it can be used against non-adjacent opponents...

And the numbers look even better when Raging...

Current level plan:

Done:
1: Fighter: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot and Weapon Focus: Longbow
2: Fighter: Rapid Shot
3: Fighter: True Believer
4: Fighter: WS: Longbow
5: Barbarian: none

Proposed:
6: Pious Templar 1: Extra Rage (unless he dies, highly likely to happen in two weeks)
7: Pious Templar 2
8: Pious Templar 3: WS: Longbow (Retrain level 4 feat into Power Critical: Longbow)
9: OotBI 1: Ranged Weapon Mastery: Piercing
10: OotBI 2
11: Pious Templar 4: Improved Precise Shot
12: Pious Templar 5: Penetrating Shot
13: Pious Templar 6
14: Pious Templar 7
15: Pious Templar 8: Driving Attack, another feat TBD

So, any further suggestions or fine-tuning needed?

And many thanks for everyones' help in helping me get my mind back focused on my archer build...

Well, the Spiked Chain IS an amazing weapon. Of course, if you are a bad player, it won't make you a good one.

That said, IME the Spiked Chain is by far the best weapon in the game. Being able to threaten close and far, having access to the Flurry ability from EWM, being able to trip and disarm, it just goes on and on. The reach thing is probably the biggest asset - especially if you have someone capable of casting Enlarge Person in the party. 20' all around reach with Combat Reflexes is just a boatload of fun.

In short, what makes a PC a "BDF" is the ability to hit things really hard in melee and do nothing else. At least, in my opinion.

If you hit things really hard in melee and have a +30 Diplomacy, you're no longer a BDF... you're a tank/face.

From what I've seen in this thread thus far, everyone's suggestions are how to improve the combat effectiveness of your PC, and they're all good suggestions for the most part.

Your PC already seems to be a BDF... it seems like you just want him to be more optimized!

OH yes, I agreed, as I said though, it is not the act of selecting a spiked chain, but supporting it with the relevant fefats and ability scores, coupled with a canny player that makes them unfortunately better than other weapons.

However the weapon itself is not the be all end all, rather its synergy with several feats.

Lets not forget one can flurry with Slashing Flurry now with the good old greatsord, etc...

A well built spiked chain fighter is effective, but they are ususally NOT BDFs. They are often tactical battlefield controllers. (Grog is excepted Maesto)

Well, Spiked Chain Fighters can be BDFs - and the same things that make the weapon great make them great BDFs - the reach, flurry, etc. Our main group had a Spiked Chain BDF who just retired. While his damage was not quite as high as the Uncanny Blow fighters, he controled the battlefield more, got more full attacks and with Combat Reflexes, Cleave and Flurry, often would do more damage then them anyway.

IMO, the only really essential feat for a Spiked Chain BDF (over and above other BDFs) is Combat Reflexes. Cleave is also very good - but many BDFs have that anyway. You don't need Improved Trip or Disarm - you can trip or disarm when it makes sense, but it is not worth changing your whole build for them.

Slashing Flurry is a nice "capstone" feat to take at 14th or 15th level (which is when it becomes available), but -5 is significantly worse than -2 and the SC Fighter gets Flurry at 7th or 8th level and uses it for half his LG career.

Heh. No, my fighter was not a BDF. Maybe its the way I play him, maybe it is my wishy-washiness.

And, in this thread, I was mainly looking for ways to make him a bit better for what he is: A high-Dex fighter-type.

Next time, if there is a next time, I will build myself a SCF from scratch with the intention of making him a battlefield control specialist.

This character was originally designed as an archer, and I lost sight of that, and he just didn't want to fit into any other mold, so he wasn't being as much fun to play as I wanted.

This way, he should be back to something I can handle. Well, I should have a good chance to play him in two weeks, we have a local con coming up with a bunch of LG slots...

Okay, last bit, just some advice about feats:
Feats currently taken or planned to take:

FB2) Rapid Shot
CL3) True Believer
FB4) Weapon Specialization: Longbow (Power Critical: Longbow at 8th)
CL6) Extra Rage
PT3) Weapon Specialization: Longbow
CL9) Ranged Weapon mastery: Piercing
PT4) Improved Precise Shot
CL12) Craft Wondrous Item or Craft Magic Arms & Armor
PT8) Driving Attack
CL15) ?

So, is Power Critical a good feat to take as my replacement 4th level Fighter bonus feat?

Is 12th level too late to take a crafting feat? If so, what would be a good feat to take in its stead? Penetrating Shot? I saw it mentioned as not a good idea in a different archer build thread, so...

Is Driving Attack a good feat for an archer? Is there any TV on it? It only says piercing, not melee...

Any suggestion for a 15th level feat?

Not really.

Since it is a longbow, which only crits on a 20....

So, any ideas for a good replacement 4th level feat for an archer?

Pure fighter at that level, so extra rage is not available, nor extra smiting.

Anything better than Improved Initiative or one of the feats that gives a +2 to one of the saves?

Power attack. With high strength, rage, and the fact that in Greyhawk they always take your bow, sometimes the ability to pick up a door and hammer something into submission is useful.

I am quite serious, you don't always get to use your bow, and high strength full BaB PCs with Rage and odd buffs can tank if they have to.

Power attack is a decent choice, actually... you'd be surprised the number of times my archer would've liked power attack (generally when using the adamantine greatsword...).

For your last three feats, consider Woodland Archer (RotW), Manyshot, and Improved Rapid Shot. Woodland Archer is just gravy, Manyshot is what you do in a surprise round, or when you have to move and shoot (it may look crap, but I find myself using it almost every game). It's also what you do when you ready to shoot somebody (eg Dreadwraiths or Greater Shadows). Improved Rapid Shot is +2 to hit. By then, however, you may find that your attack bonus is good enough anyway and you don't need a further +2 to hit, but +2 to hit for a feat is pretty good (and it will help your iteratives out). The aim of an archer is to produce consistent damage. With a good attack bonus and woodland archer, you should only be missing at most one arrow in every full attack action on average.

As for the order, it's up to you, but improved rapid shot has manyshot as a prereq. You'd probably get more overall mileage out of woodland archer from 12 to 14, but you'd be thankful for manyshot when it comes up.

Shame on you for raging to use your bow though ;) (yeah, I'm in a shame on you mode, since somebody just said that to me on another thread :D)

Which deity for Pious Templar, btw?

Heh. I mainly took Barbarian for the fast movement. My current Strengthbow is set for my normal 16 Str, not my Raging 20, or Enlarged/Raging 22. That would mainly be reserved for when I need to serve as melee type or lose my bow.

Ehlonna is the one I went with. She has Longbow as one of her favored weapon choices, and she made a bit more sense given the history of my PC. He still lusts after the quiver. And the only mod he has seen it on the AR for was at a higher APL than he played the mod at.
