Hey guys, I have a lil' ol Kobold who is going into Dragon Disciple.

Before anyone says it: I am aware of the table variation on Dragon Disciple Kobolds. The GMs in my area agree that the kobold is NOT of the Dragon type (hence the need for Dragonwrought feat, and see the qualification of the dragonblood type as a 'like' rather than an 'is' situation), and though there is some table variation in this build due to the Dragonblood subtype, I don't expect it in any game this Kobold will play. (Not a con character)

The Kobold has levelled twice in like three ARs (Fields of Ruin + Sinister Spire) ANd I am a bit of a dilemma with what to do with him.

He really just wants to be a buff little dude with wings. I don't want an xp penalty so Barbarian is out unfortunately.

Here is what he is:
Name: Versvesh Fir'tir Ir'Lyn

Stats:

Str: 16 (was 13 at creation)
Dex: 14
Con: 14 (Was 12 at creation)
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 11

1. Fighter1: Weapon Focus Great sword*, Dragon Wings
2. Fighter2 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Con
3. Fighter3: Power Attack
4. Fighter4 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Str *Stat Bump Str
5. Fighter5:
6. Fighter6: *Weapon Specialisation, Improved Dragon Wings

He has just hit level 7 (hence the dilemma)

The idea is to go:

7. Sorceror1:
8. Dragon Disciple1: Stat Boost Str
9. Dragon Disciple2: +2 Str FEAT???
10. Dragon Disciple3:
11: Dragon Disciple4: +2 Str
12. Fighter7: Melee Weapon Mastery, Stat Boost Str
13. Fighter8: *FEAT???
14. Fighter9:
15: Fighter10: *FEAT???, FEAT???

Ok, bear in mind I don't have the required kobold books....

1) Overall, fighter/sorceror/dragon disciple looks great.

2) Can you take enlarge person as your draconic rite? More strength, more base damage, etc.

3) Shield and True Strike are GREAT sorceror spells, especially since True Strike is verbal only, and has a spell failure of 0%. Shield will fail sometimes, but so what, you're armor class isn't going to get worse.

I'd lean toward Fighter 8/Sorcerer 1/Dragon Disciple 4 by 13th. If your real goal is to be a 'buff little dude with wings' ... well you've already got the wings part down, and 16 Strength isn't bad at all considering the penalty you're working with.

Two more levels of Fighter would go a long way to help this guy out in the short term.

In regard to which Sorcerer spells to select, I'd stick with non-somatic spells, meaning Shield is out. You don't want to have to put up with ASF. Honestly, your caster level isn't going to be high enough to make Shield worthwhile anyway. (1 minute, so you'd have to cast it in combat) Critical Strike is a good selection, and I'd consider Swift Expeditious Retreat for the other.

If you haven't invested heavily into your weapon yet, you might want to think about getting EWP for an Elven Courtblade. I'm guessing that your Will Save is meh so Iron Will might be a good selection too. Protection from Evil doesn't stop everything...

I can't really think of any good feats right now. (Though I'm sure they're out there.)

Blades of Fire is better than Critical Strike because it's fire damage and doesn't have the same limits as sneak attack. Unless your facing fire resistance or immunity.

Personally, I think your best options are:

Enlarge Person (Rite only)
Shield
Magic Missile (Rite only)
Fist of Stone (Rite only)
True Strike
Critical Strike or Blades of Fire

Though NOT in that particular order. Critical Strike or Blades of Fire and Enlarge Person are the best for damage dealing. Fist of Stone's greatest problem is that it lasts only one minute. Enlarge Person has the flaw of taking a round to cast. BUT, you can use Enlarge Person on another character.

As for Feats:

What kind of Armor does your Kobold wear? If you want to wear heavier armor and still fly, then you need to take Reinforced Wings (I think that that is the feat for flying in medium armor.)

Melee Weapon Mastery is a MUST! The increase to damage is vital because of a Kobold's stunted strength.

Ok in response to a few questions:

1. Reinforced wings is not that necessary, he will only be using light armour, and have a light load. I myself thought it up in a few older kobold builds (see all the old kobold fighter threads) but I realise it is NONC and would require a special, somehting I don't have the time/effort for, seeing as I already have two other specials coming my way for other PCs. (Thanks Puggle for one of them!)

2. The truestrike option I don't really like, as a round a fighter spends not doing 'fighter stuff' seems a bit of a waste for me, so I am not sold on it, but it would allow shocktrooper style charges without the massive downsides.

Here is my current assessment:

Name: Versvesh Fir'tir Ir'Lyn

Stats:

Str: 16 (was 13 at creation)
Dex: 14
Con: 14 (Was 12 at creation)
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 11

1. Fighter1: Weapon Focus Great sword*, Dragon Wings
2. Fighter2 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Con
3. Fighter3: Power Attack
4. Fighter4 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Str *Stat Bump Str
5. Fighter5:
6. Fighter6: *Weapon Specialisation, Improved Dragon Wings
7. Fighter7:
8. Fighter8: *Melee Weapon Mastery, Stat Boost Str
9. Sorceror1: Improved Flight???
10. Dragon Disciple1:
11. Dragon Disciple2: +2 Str
12. Dragon Disciple3: Stat Boost Str FEAT???
13: Dragon Disciple4: +2 Str
14. Fighter9:
15: Fighter10: *FEAT???, FEAT???

Now the issue is what to do with those feat slots after level 8...

Basic options: Improved Toughness, Improved Initiative, Greater Weapon Focus (you did make it to Fighter 8 after all), Improved Flight, Iron Will, Exotic Weapon Proficiency(Elven Courtblade), Close-Quarters Combat, Improved Natural Armor

Draconic Heritage if you really want a specific class skill might even work.

I think there's a feat that gives Kolbolds a tail attack you might want to look into as well.

Draconic Heritage if you really want a specific class skill might even work.

Picking up Draconic Heritage with the sorceror level as an alternate class feature. (Greyhawk Ruins PC)

Sorceror and Dragon Disciple have primary will save, so I feel the iron will is a bit unjustified. The courtblade is an idea, but there are two solutions to that:

1. If I wanted the increased crit range I'd take the Master's touch spell to save the feat

2. It's a poncy elven weapon, my kobold is not the biggest fan of elves, they are always mean to him.

Greater Weapon Focus is a definte idea that I like, and is exactly the kind of thing he would probably do to offset the lack of Barbarian levels.

Improved Natural Armour only adds +1 so considering my natural armour will be +3 eventually its not a big enough change. Here's hoping for crimson dragonhide bracers (so not going to happen)

Close Quarters combat is a good idea, with a small based fighter, so that may be an option.

Try to get reincarnated into a wood elf?(just had to insert this - +6 to Str, wow)

1. Fighter1: Weapon Focus Great sword*, Dragon Wings
2. Fighter2: Improved Initiative
3. Fighter3: Power Attack
4. Fighter4 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Str *Stat Bump Str
5. Fighter5:
6. Fighter6: *Weapon Specialisation, Improved Dragon Wings
7. Sorcerer 1:
8. Occult Slayer 1
9. Occult Slayer 2: MWM
10. Dragon Disciple1:
11. Dragon Disciple2: +2 Str
12. Dragon Disciple3: Stat Boost Str FEAT???
13: Dragon Disciple4: +2 Str
14. Occult Slayer 3
15: Occult Slayer 4: FEAT???

I'd use one of the retrains to get your Spellcraft up high enough to qualify for Occult Slayer.

Kobold Fighter 2 level sucks - you're basically getting Improved Toughness and +1 to Fort Saves. As you can have a decent AC, your saves are a bigger concern - 2 levels of Occult Slayer mean you can do some significant things once a day against someone targeting you with a spell. You could also use this level to qualify yourself for EWM at these levels with a Great Scimitar if that's not a good thing. Possibly Reaping Mauler(a bad PrC for a medium, but quite interesting for a small one) - hard to see how you get into it by 8th, though. It could make a nice 14th/15th level...it might have gone well with Kobold Fighter 1 and getting say Elusive Target.

Familiar - get the familiar - Dragon Disciple has Spot and Listen as class skills - you could max out Listen and gain some advantages with a Bat familiar when fighting things blindly.

Remember, the other use of True strike is to bypass concealment.

Instead of 'doing fighter stuff' and missing the guy with 5 mirror images all day, you can cast true strike, and then power attack him for all you've got.

True Strike for a melee character is usually a pretty solid bet. It takes an action away from you but it gives you the chance to power attack for stupid in the next round and pump up your damage as much as you can.

A guy in my region came up with an awesome build for a dragon disciple only it uses paladin instead of fighter. That's not helping you at all but I thought I'd give him props since I'm using his build mostly. (It'd have been better if I could have gotten Rhino's Rush, but oh well.)

All pertininent advice, as always Mommy.

I actually like the idea of the Scimitar - as it is Io's favoured weapon (his god) And would lean towards that as an option for the EWM.

As for the familiar, maximising Spot or listen could be a very good idea... Plus Alertness is never Bad.

However, Occult Slayer, whilst a good PrC, is not what I would like to do. There are many occult slayers around, and whilst I know the fluff of the class is by no means binding I don't want to have to put up with "hey you can cast spells" - We have some of those around. (they must have listened to Britt)

Hence I want to avoid it for purely 'in character' reasons.

I would very much NOT like to delay the Dragon Disciple or Improved Flight. The inability to hover may cost me...

Now I have a dilemma, retrain to the great scimitar may work, but then what do I whack in instead of the uneven level of fighter?

What's your alignment? You could pop a level of Hexblade, for giggles. 1 BAB, +2 to will save, and a DC 10(!) curse. They could always roll a 1...

If a wanted an xp penalty, I am pretty sure would have taken a level of Barbarian.

1. Fighter1: EWP: Great Scimitar, Dragon Wings
2. Fighter2: WF: Great Scimitar
3. Fighter3: Power Attack
4. Fighter4 (Kobold Substitution): +2 Str *Stat Bump Str
5. Fighter5:
6. Fighter6: *Weapon Specialisation(Great Scimitar), Improved Dragon Wings
7. EWM 1: Uncanny Blow
8. EWM 2
9. Sorcerer 1: MWM
10. Dragon Disciple1:
11. Dragon Disciple2: +2 Str
12. Dragon Disciple3: Stat Boost Str Improved Crit(or Keen if you find it)
13: Dragon Disciple4: +2 Str
14. EWM 3
15: Sorcerer 2

The use of EWM 2-3 and Sorcerer 2 aren't ideal, but we're really just comparing Fighter 7 vs EWM 2 - Fighter 7 gives nothing except slightly better skill list. EWM 2 gives an extra +1 to Fort(making up for the lost constitution) and an extra trick - not a particularly useful trick, but Show Off or Throw Weapon could be useful, especially with one of the returning weapon crystals.

And the use of EWM at 12th as an example ought to be considerable - if you have a +6 Belt at that point and therefore a 26 Str, you're doing 1d6+16 before power attack with a 15-20 weapon.

What's going on with your character is why I'm not a huge fan of Kobold Fighter levels - they eat up a lot of feats. Though +2 Str is nice if you can take advantage of it, as EWM does.

That'll learn me to take the hit and make the kobold fighter.

I do like the idea of the EWM levels, and might just do that.

I do like the math at 12th level:

d6 + 2*str + 4 damage wise on a 15-20 crit with a masterwork weapon.

I didn't suggest barbarian simply because you can't rage if you want to cast spells. If it had been earlier in your career and would've seen a lot of use, I'd have suggested it. At 15, an XP penalty is kind of eh.

Yeah the spells issue isn't massive, I may consider Barbarian at 15th coupled with extra rage just for the outrageous fact that I could have a kobold raging at 32 strength.

Worth the looks on folk's faces alone...

I'd definitely do that. I think though, without travel opportunities, it would seem quite unlikely to get your Kobold that high level in the time remaining. Close, yes. But 15th?

15 is viable, but 13 is practical - with modules left I can play.

Depends whetehr I travel to pick up Ratik games in addition to my region of Perrenland or not...

Yeah, I'm curious as to whether or not I can get my Favored Beguiler of Pelor to 14th and get access to a Bead of Karma. That would be funny...

When the Beguiler uses Holy Word at 18th level caster, I'd like to see the looks on faces then...

The adaptables/ruins arc will make a big difference, the issue is time more than anything, as after 4th ed comes out, with the exception of home games I imagine LG is going to slip away quietly and quickly in the furore of a new system.
