| #1awroeMay 04, 2008 7:06:04 | I've just gained access to Leomund's Billet (Heroes of Battle p127). It's a 5th level Wizard spell that creates a structure similar to Leomund's Secure Shelter. However, it's a Close range spell and the structure it creates is 20' by 80' in size. If I interpret the rules correctly, this means that I have to cast the spell on top of myself until I reach ~ 14th level, as otherwise some of the 80' is outside of the Close area and will not be created. Does this seem correct? Can I create the building around me, or does being in the area of the spell cause it to fail? Is your answer affected to find out the casting time is 1 standard action? Instant fortification... AW. |

| #3awroeMay 04, 2008 8:02:59 | the oint at which the centre of the structure is is the point where you 'cast' it - like firing a fireball at 600 feet, even if thats the maximum range there is still a radius explosion AT 600 feet, (thus affecting targets up to 620 feet away) PHB p 174-175 "A spell's range is the maximum distance from you that the spell's effect can occurs, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the spell's point of origin. If any portion of the spell's area would extend beyond this range, that area is wasted." Which I read as meaning the bits of the fireball further than 600 feet are wasted and do not happen. |

The edge of the close range limit is 70 feet away from the caster. If the caster centers the billet on an imaginary line from himself to the edge of the range, then the billet is nowhere near the edge of the range. |

The edge of the close range limit is 70 feet away from the caster. He's right. I didn't check the math the first time. The skinny part would be "built" on the 70 foot radius part, and then the long 80 foot bit would be built in the 140 foot diameter. |
| #7samwiseMay 04, 2008 14:02:14 | The limit of a close range spell at 9th level is 45 feet, not 70 feet, for a diameter of 90 feet. Which, theoretically, is long enough to contain the structure, the problem is the 20 foot width unless you are creating it on top of yourself. Without dragging out a battlemat, I think it barely fits if you cast the spell right next to you, with you in the middle of one of the 80 foot long walls. |
| #8arvagorMay 04, 2008 17:58:23 | The limit of a close range spell at 9th level is 45 feet, not 70 feet, for a diameter of 90 feet. Perhaps it's a (glaring) mistake, but the spell in question has a range of "25 feet + 5 ft./level" ;) |
| #9magebeastMay 04, 2008 21:10:25 | The limit of a close range spell at 9th level is 45 feet, not 70 feet, for a diameter of 90 feet. As Arvagor noted, 25 + 45 = 70 ![]() |
| #10samwiseMay 04, 2008 21:33:04 | Perhaps it's a (glaring) mistake, but the spell in question has a range of "25 feet + 5 ft./level" ;) I would go with "glaring mistake". "Close" is a standard spell range, defined as 25 feet + 5 ft./2 levels. Any variation from that is almost certainly a typo. If they wanted it to have a different range it would not be noted as Close. It still winds up being a squeeze only at 9th level. |
| #11arvagorMay 04, 2008 21:34:42 | As Arvagor noted, 25 + 45 = 70 Samwise's point is that the normal Close range is specified as "25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels"; it seems clear that Heroes of Battle has a typo in this regard. My fault for not remembering :embarrass ; but then, I never play spellcasters ;) |
| #12arvagorMay 04, 2008 21:45:47 | It still winds up being a squeeze only at 9th level. If I've drawn my grid correctly, I think it can still fit: |
| #13awroeMay 07, 2008 4:02:12 | If I've drawn my grid correctly, I think it can still fit: I think you're slightly out. Casting it with the centre just in front of you, the furthest corner is 20' out and 40' to one side, which works out as 50' distance (4 diagonals and 4 straights). Which must need a 50' radius to fit in, thus requiring CL10. Much better than I had thought, and makes it quite usable Instant barrier - here we come...I suppose a related question is: Can you cast it on top of the enemy, placing them inside it? |
| #14timlagorMay 07, 2008 8:59:22 | Leaving aside the range issues (and whether you lose the end wall* if you (choose to) fail to get it all in), is there any reason to suppose you can't cast it around you? I imagine the answer is that it's a Conjuration(creation) spell and consequently needs to be created in an open space that will supoprt it. * ..presumably without any effect on the atmosphere inside. |
| #15Jay_Ibero_911May 07, 2008 12:39:55 | You think those range issues are bad? Take a look at Blizzard from Frostburn. Without applying the Enlarge Spell metamagic feat, it's impossible to be outside the radius when you cast it becuase the radius scales as fast as the range. |

Well, that's why our favorite cleric around here casts snow sight and snow walk on us every time we play with him. Plus, he likes to sleet storm. Wes |
