| #1ferol_debtor_of_tormJul 14, 2008 17:50:47 | Those of you who have played this mod probably know what I'm talking about. After a hard fought battle (including a couple party members turning traitor and siding with the enemy) we managed to force the BBEG to retreat but not before disarming him of his uber powerful item. This uber powerful item is listed on the AR under items found with adventure access. Now I knew that it would be ridiculously expensive but I figured I would look up the price out of curiosity. After a few confused minutes I discovered that there is no price. So what is the deal? Is this item free to everyone who plays the mod? Was there a mistake and the price not included on the AR? If anyone knows how to get a hold of Creighton Broadhurst please forward him to this topic. |
| #2mattastrophicJul 14, 2008 19:08:15 | As someone who defeated the guy in the place with the thing that has no price and is on the AR, I am also wondering how I might acquire this item. I emailed Creighton about it two weeks ago; no response as of yet. -Matt |
| #3ferol_debtor_of_tormJul 14, 2008 19:09:59 | Well in the mean time, free *thing*s for everyone who manages to defeat the guy in the place! |
| #4surgebusterJul 14, 2008 19:37:52 | Well in the mean time, free *thing*s for everyone who manages to defeat the guy in the place! Hardly free! Creighton's email address, like all campaign staff, is in the LGCS. |
| #5_metz_Jul 14, 2008 21:07:12 | Hardly free! We were wondering that too Joe, seems a bit odd and almost put there as a joke. Which is peculiar considering the circumstances. |
| #6ranielkJul 15, 2008 10:32:21 | It is more there as a joke. The thing has no price. It can have no price (outside of say Epic Level Handbook stuff). All else fails the Silent Ones of Keoland will come along and take it away from you somehow. So chances are you couldn't keep it no matter what. |
| #7redfistJul 15, 2008 15:16:53 | This really does need to be answered. Those *things* obviously are more valueable than a rusty dagger, but currently have no spec'd price. Some people are assuming **FREE** which imho is freaking crazy. Those *things* should cost more than rusty daggers... I know people have emailed Creighton about this weeks ago and haven't gotten a response. Can *someone* in authority get this answered please? Thanks... |
| #8Evil_MouseJul 16, 2008 2:41:29 | According to the PHB any item with a dash like thiss"----" means free. any can roll a 1 on a d20. even the dm i seen it happened at southern gen Con. Whole table was amazed. With the campiann already wrapping up i dought they print up a new ar or errata. The ar take presents over any thing else. Any correction need a new ar need to come through. Since no price on that staff there for it free. End of storie. it was a lovely present for wiz |
| #9_metz_Jul 16, 2008 3:09:47 | According to the PHB any item with a dash like thiss"----" means free. That means absolutely nothing. The item is most definitely not free, and if the AR is incorrect, than it is assumed to not be able to be purchased. This is why we are asking. Don't go making sweeping statements on things like that if they aren't backed up by ANYTHING. LG ARs have nothing to do with PHB and DMG item acquisition, in case you haven't noticed. |
| #10redfistJul 16, 2008 10:25:47 | According to the PHB any item with a dash like thiss"----" means free. See? Proves my point... This kind of crazy talk begs for an official resolution. If it's free, I'm going to buy 1000 of them and hand them out to kids as candy. I'll then lead a 1000 kid march against Turosh Mak. After easily wiping out his armies, we'll take on IUZ and his pitiful forces. WOOHOO!!! (yes - sarcasm is annoying, so is the notion of those being free) |
| #11brittJul 16, 2008 13:03:53 | Someone send me the AR offlist and I'll see if I can find something. No promises though. |
| #12brittJul 16, 2008 13:06:31 | Oh, and a lack of listed price does NOT equal free. That's an interpretation that everyone knows can't honestly be intended. That's the same as going to a store and finding a Bluray player sitting on top of a rack of clearance clothes priced at 5$ and really, honestly thinking it costs 5$. People joke about that, and some might try to get it for 5$, but no one really believes it was intended to cost 5$. |
| #13ferol_debtor_of_tormJul 16, 2008 13:35:29 | Britt I sent you the AR offlist. |
| #14brittJul 16, 2008 13:48:28 | Ok, what likely happened is that someone didn't realize that those types of items do not have prices listed. When an item is included on an AR and the item has a listed price in the referenced book (no calculations are required), we do not include the price on the AR. This is to avoid confusion of typos, erratas, or other types of contradicting prices. My personal rule was that if any calculation was needed, the price was listed; in all other cases, the price was left off. So if someone thought the item had a price, a fairly reasonable assumption, they wouldn't think to come up with one for the AR. Unless an errata comes out with a price, you can't have the item. |
| #15ferol_debtor_of_tormJul 16, 2008 13:57:02 | Alright well, gg. Any chance of getting an errata with an actual price? I guess in the mean time I'll print up this thread and carry it around with me in case anyone else asks. |
| #16CSHunt68Jul 16, 2008 15:39:39 | According to the PHB any item with a dash like thiss"----" means free. Not surprising. Idiotic, but not surprising. |
| #17Evil_MouseJul 18, 2008 2:11:10 | Ok, what likely happened is that someone didn't realize that those types of items do not have prices listed. According to anouther one your post Ar take presendent over anything. No price listed it free.End of storry Also here quote from circle member on Any mater vs ar " Unless a correction AR or an official AR errata is issued, the AR always takes precedence. -Steven Conforti, the Circle |
| #18_metz_Jul 18, 2008 2:33:41 | Well as i say Unless the errata come out it free according to PHB. According to anouther one your post Ar take presendent over anything. No price listed it free.End of storry That makes no sense and is not grounded in ANYTHING. Based on PRECEDENT if there is no price than it CANNOT be purchased without an errata. Don't cite precedent if you don't know what the word means or are just making it up. No sane DM would allow you to have that item for free, and any that would I do not consider fit to DM in the Living Greyhawk campaign. If DnD is about your character winning than I'd suppose you'd argue for it. But it's not; it is a team game, and ideally (_ideally_) is reasonably balanced to provide a challenge to you without needlessly killing PCs or the PCs winning with no effort, hence the reward of experience. |
| #19redfistJul 18, 2008 2:34:18 | A circle member just told you no. Don't try to exploit the system. That's just lame. |
| #20redfistJul 18, 2008 3:21:55 | According to the PHB any item with a dash like thiss"----" means free. Well as i say Unless the errata come out it free according to PHB. According to anouther one your post Ar take presendent over anything. No price listed it free.End of storry This means absolutely nothing. There is no "----" listed next to this item in the DMG for price so even if that rule did apply generically across books, it doesn't apply in this case. What you've done, simply, is invented a price of 0 and are trying to justify cheating with an off-base and unfounded rules argument. Please don't cheapen the campaign by corrupting further tables you join. You may want your final LG days stained by cheating, I doubt the other players and DMs around you want the same. At least I hope not. |

Which i respect, well all i have to say PEople make some mistake. We are all human i will live with circle dession. Every one human but i thank you there be no more post from me on this matter clear. My only advise please review the ar before release with the mod. |
| #22CSHunt68Jul 19, 2008 8:47:07 | It ain't free, folks - in case anyone was _really_ wondering. End of story. |
| #23CdrcJsnJul 19, 2008 11:24:04 | Wait...so are you saying it is not, in fact, free? Show yes, I'm kidding |
| #24ferol_debtor_of_tormJul 21, 2008 13:44:21 | Well I don't think anyone actually believed it was free but we really do want to know what it's price is supposed to be. Is it intended to just be unpurchasable? Even if the price was in the 600k range I could see characters being able to afford one with one of those ridiculous discount favors I see some regions giving away. |
| #25redfistJul 21, 2008 14:13:29 | Trust me. Evil Mouse did believe it was free (as was confirmed through conversations in OpenRPG). I fully agree though, if it is to be purchasable, it needs to have a price. Also, if it was "Adventure" access before, it should become "Core" or "Any" to accommodate people who wanted to purchase it but had to wait for many ARs before an errata which gave pricing. my 2 gp... |
| #26arvagorJul 21, 2008 16:19:18 | Even if the price was in the 600k range I could see characters being able to afford one with one of those ridiculous discount favors I see some regions giving away. Some time ago, a few of us calculated what an LG PC could earn over his "lifetime" -- IIRC, a PC can get around 300,000 gp, at most. I have never seen a discount favor greater than 50%, so unless a PC has never spent a single earned gp, then the purchase ain't gonna happen (how many PCs do you know could survive at APL 16 with nothing more than their starting equipment from level 1?) |
| #27howie23Jul 21, 2008 17:33:11 | Some time ago, a few of us calculated what an LG PC could earn over his "lifetime" -- IIRC, a PC can get around 300,000 gp, at most. There's a maximum number of times a PC can die? I didn't know. |
| #28magebeastJul 21, 2008 19:54:52 | There's a maximum number of times a PC can die? I didn't know. Or just eat a ton of level drains. |
| #29dragon2008Jul 21, 2008 22:10:21 | Thank you Deathshead Shrieker. Or, a certain regional mod where PCs got level drained in a very, very unfriendly plane... |
| #30arvagorJul 21, 2008 22:45:10 | There's a maximum number of times a PC can die? I didn't know. I'm sorry... I guess I should have added, "..., as long as he doesn't intentionally go too far out of his way to get killed or level-drained, just to artificially drive up his wealth relative to his level..." :rolleye2: And yes, I believe there is a limit -- IMHO, you can only be raised a number of times equal to your character's starting Con score*... ;) |
| #31_metz_Jul 21, 2008 23:06:27 | My Crafter has about 600k worth of items, and I know a PC or two with like 800k. All legitimate. All crafters however... |
| #32bitznarfJul 21, 2008 23:14:26 | *Grumbles some more about the brokenness of crafter PCs in LG at high level - especially those who have died multiple times...* |
| #33_metz_Jul 21, 2008 23:18:19 | *Grumbles some more about the brokenness of crafter PCs in LG at high level - especially those who have died multiple times...* My Crafter hasn't died once. However, the main reason he has the crafting feats is because of character concept (worships Moradin, god of the forge, and is a high priest, therefore required to make the weapons for the clan). He was first PC, little did I know that crafting was so effective in LG... |
| #34arvagorJul 21, 2008 23:51:32 | My Crafter hasn't died once. However, the main reason he has the crafting feats is because of character concept (worships Moradin, god of the forge, and is a high priest, therefore required to make the weapons for the clan). Well, then he really only needs one crafting feat -- Craft Magic Arms And Armor -- and not all those others ;) |
| #35_metz_Jul 21, 2008 23:54:18 | He has CWI and CMAA. A lot of the stuff on the CWI list is good for the dwarves too Arvagor... |
| #36arvagorJul 22, 2008 0:57:46 | <<>> Does no one understand what this > ;) < even means anymore??? |
| #37redfistJul 22, 2008 2:00:40 | I feel so ashamed. My crafting wizard is only worth 489035 in magic items (not counting value of spells inside the BBBs, just the value of the BBBs themselves). He has CWI, but has obviously bought a good # of metamagic Rods. |
| #38timlagorJul 22, 2008 23:11:51 | My primary crafter is a Pit Fiend so mine is definitely bigger than yours :P |
| #39_metz_Jul 23, 2008 22:07:15 | <<>> Does no one understand what this > ;) < even means anymore??? Means you were being a cheeky git, so was I. ![]() |
| #40cpttylorxJul 28, 2008 13:02:49 | My first PC crafter walked away after year two with a lot.. A LOT of money. Having over 150k cash after the end of year 2 and all its madness. |
| #41katrickAug 16, 2008 9:59:03 | Speaking of free/ no cost provided items. In COR 3-0* Through Nature to Eternity, the one where you go to the moon/celene. The Robe of Vecna, has no price. Now i'm a little vague about it now and at the time i could not afford it, but I'm sure i found a price of 10,000 or 12,000gp and now that i can afford it I can't remember where the price came from? Maybe a later AR or earlier, or a book that was 3.0 not sure if anyone can help that would be great. It was up the top in the favours bit. access (any)katrick |
| #42solbergbSep 02, 2008 11:46:15 | No, that was first edition. As long as you have levels to lose, you only lose levels. Con loss is a level 1 thing. |
