014 Apoc by the book
While few now were alive when the the collapse happened, and all communications with HQ have been lost, the garrison of Ft Sanitary have not just survived but prospered.  Transforming from a military base to a great citidel to hold the ranks swelled by recruited refugees, Ft Sanitary is a beacon of civilzation in the wastelands.  WIth its own militarized farming and militarized industry it really is a society of citizen soldiers: Every last person is in the army, from the army plumbers and army schoolteachers to the MPs and army bisquit bakers.  With this military infrastructure, not only do the hot showers work in the apoc, but they work to mil spec.

But there are those that are not welcome: the apoc barbarian thugs, the mutants, the horrific creatures spawned by radiation, and of course the cyber-mutant-nazi-zombies that caused the whole world to turn to crap in the first place.  Those need to be kept out, and while it is no small task it is readily achievable by the gun-totin', highly trained, regularly drilled, combat ready cooks teachers and librarians.

Are the players ready for a tour of duty as citizens of the military apoc society?

00016:  PCs are stranded on an Island while nuclear holocaust occurs, after fixing their ship, they return to the mainland and find it deserted except for roving bands of murderers and bandits.  Use their ship to travel up and down the coast scavanging and aiding less fortunate survivors.

0017: Players play an advanced tentacle-y alien race. After positioning a mothership above all of earth's major landmarks and destroying their pitiful air force attack (except the one that got away- surely, he won't be an issue later), victory is all but assured. Cities are falling one by one and nothing can stop you- as advanced aliens, you use only the best in antivirus software.

In fact, start celebrating now.

0018:  As lowly tech guys at a global banking firm, players are the first to discover illegal transactions to quasi military organizations across the globe.  Depending on their actions, this could be a really short campaign (like if they report it to the fbi/cia).

Don't forget to throw in the occasional mutant/zombie horde, enemy nations fighting over the un-nuked land with their remaining military forces, caninabel hordes,

019:: Island Getaway
The team  follows a contact to the marina
where they see him board a small tourboat.  When they too board the team is told by the skipper of the boat that the gathering clouds wont be more than a 10minute shower... it will clear up fast and not interfere with their 3 hour tour.

... a 3 hour tour.

But the weather started getting rough, and the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the actions of the player chars, the tourboat will be lost.

Since there's been a bunch of tv shows that are blatantly ripped off for story ideas:

0023:  Players are doctors (and other staff members) at Sacred Heart Hospital.  They have to continue to get into quirky and silly scenarios over the course of 8 seasons years.

Ok my serious suggestion:

0023(SERIOUS): players are part of a test group for a new super virus.  After being infected, something goes wrong and the players suddenly are stronger/faster/smarter/tougher/more charismatic/more dedicated than average human beings (aka, they're suddenly "heroes").  After escaping and learning of their powers, they seek revenge on those who were using them as lab rats.

0024 (Futuristic Campaign w/ Houserulings): The Players are part of an EVE {Exploration for Viable Environments} unit assigned to locating viable planets for the expanding population of the Sol system and her existing colonies.  The Players have access to an experimental ship, actually a rebuilt ship from the debris field of an alien ship that crashed on one of the outer Sol system planets say Venus.  The rebuilt ship of course has its quirks like exiting out of the slipspace in the wrong sector, the artificial Grav-plating disengauging are odd times, etcetera

0025: Scavengers of the Deep.
In the age 2032 AD, global warming has caused world wide chaos ranging from flooding to weather disasters to the point that humanity is now entering a new world. With many countries attempting to recover there are still areas known as "Lost areas" in which the natural disasters hit the hardest that are unnoticed...at least ot most people. The players take the role of "Scavengers", looters of the lost wealth of the world, it's a dangerous occupation considerede stealing on a national scale but the wealth that they gain from it is too good to pass up. Over the course of the campaign, the players discover that something has awokened due to the rise in temperatures, new species of aquatic life both docile and aggressive that now roam the sea.

0027: Apocalypse Campaign {Idea WIP with houserulings}
PC Races: Humans, other races at GM's discretion
Party Members: ?
Level: Any
Year/PL:2573/PL7-8
Concept: Awakening to see only the frosted exterior of the cryostasis coffins the PC's  are part of the EVE {Exploration for Viable Environments} unit sent out in 2327 to find habitable planets for the emigration of Sol's residents due to the depletions/exhaustment of all resources within the galaxial arm and the increasing skirmishes for the remaining resources.

The group, returning from escorting one faction of emigres in their charge to a habitable world find that the remaining residents of SOL have devastated each other with the arsenals built up over generations.  The group upon exiting the coffins find that most of the crew {NPC's} have died to failures within the sub-protocols of the coffins OS... a few coffins are empty while others show shattered armaglass with skeletal bones while the failed ones show mummified corpses.  After exiting the Crew cryo bay #3, they find the signs of interior damage caused by explosives and moderate weapons fire along with the skeletal remains of crew forces and enemy combatents.
The ship is found to be in a stable geosynch orbit around Europa along with several of the ship shuttle bays destroyed and missing shuttles, while the research bunker on Europa is destroyed.

The ships C&C along with the secondary C&C bridge have either been destroyed or the doors welded shut with the ships AI fragmented and all systems except life support and rudimentary functions locked down.

The crew after working to repair the damage and unlock the systems they return to Earth to find out exactly what happened and why the ship was attacked.  while exploring the damaged ship they find evidence of the attackers being radical idealists of to them an unknown.

Sounds a little like the live action movie Gunhed from ADVfilms except it was a sentient computer program that wanted to off humans... and now I have to watch that tonight once I find my dvd copy...

Ironically I got this idea from playing X-COM: Terror from the Deep, so the thing that awoke was an alien battleship; it didn't ruin the game's feel as the ship never got out of the water though the players did like having to beat the government to it to steal tech from it...as well as the fact they fought aliens underwater.

Dies the Fire (2004) is an alternate history, post-apocalyptic novel by S. M. Stirling and the first installment of the Emberverse series. The book is a spin-off from the Stirling's Nantucket series. In that series, modern-day Nantucket is thrown back in time to the Bronze Age. In Dies the Fire and its sequels, the reader sees the results of that event from the point of view of those left in the modern day.

Those would mess with me badly..of course I've spent a lifetime of recurring nightmares of an empty wheelchair coming after me, the only true nightmares I ever have.My own campaign idea (one of many):

 The characters start play as a cutting edge black ops team on a mission to take out a mysterious suspected terrorist. In the confusion of going after him some bizzare equipment in his lab is damaged and it explodes in briliant light! When the llight fades the heros find themselves in a post apocalyptic landscape full of mutants, robots and crazed raiders. Do they seek to help the nearby settlements form a true civilization or do they put all thier efforts in finding some means of getting home? Is there even a way to get home?
