If a player character wants to catch another character that's jumping down, how should this be resolved in terms of damage reduced/sustained? Distance of the fall, weight of the falling PC and the Strength of the PC on the lower ground would have to be considered.

Allow the catching character to make a Strength DC 12+1 for every 10 feet fallen. If the save is successful, the fallen character can reduce the amount of damage taken by 10 feet/1d6 damage, and 10ft/1d6dam more for every 5 points above the DC the catcher succeeded with. If the check is failed, the falling character takes damage normally. If the check is failed by 5 or more, the catching character takes half the damage the fallen character received. If the check is failed by 10 or more, both characters take the damage and fall prone.
Does that make sense?
Using a firefighter-catch-people-blanket-thingy would allow Aid Another on the check.

I'm thinking that first you calculate the amount of damage after a Jump check as normal, then factor in the catcher. In order to catch someone it's a Strength Check vs. the flatfooted Defense of the falling target. A successful catcher would provide an amount of DR equal to their number of hit die for the fall. After that, the damage gets split between the catcher and the falling person.

...

I can't believe all that came right off the top of my head.

Catch Falling Medium Creature:
  • Strength Chech DC = Distance Fallen in feet
  • Apply 2x Strength Modifier
  • Aide Another modifier is +5, +10 if using a suitable net/blanket
  • Catcher must have at least 2 hands free to attempt catch
  • Fullround Action (Extreme Effort applies)
  • Cannot Take10, Take20, Take1 or TakeMeHomeCountryRoad
Fail by 10, catcher takes 1d3 damage per 10' fell
Success reduces Fallers damage by 4 per 10' fell
Success by 10, reduce fallers damage by 5 per 10' fell
Success by 20, Faller takes no damage
Success by 30, Faller heals 1 point per 10' fell

Whatever folks suggest, plug in a 4 story jump and see how survivable it is when a Str18 guy trys to catch. There is a reason Firemen dont do this over 2nd story, and even then it aint very safe.

Sure... he's depressed so he jumps four stories out of a window onto his head. "Wow, that feels better." Picks himself up. "Now I think I'll go on with the rest of my day."
