I'll be running a D20 Apocalypse game soon and am having some trouble coming up with adventures for the players. The rain cycle has been halted because new clouds cannot form which led to widespread drought and climate destabilization. Societal collapse wasn’t far behind famine and disease. Many forests are now just dried our botanical graveyards, at least those that haven’t been ravaged by fire and tornadoes. Cities have been destroyed by hurricanes and tornadoes with fewer natural barriers to buffer the wind as well as by fires left to rage to conserve water. Much of the country is a dry, dusty wasteland with communities doing their best to coax small farms out of the ground with the water brought in and sold by armed caravans. Technology is modern equivalent with many major advances being useless in a mostly post-electric/internet society.

I'm thinking they group will start out as part of a water transportation caravan however I’m not sure where to send them from there. At some point I'll have them adventure into AZ where a gigantic, government run, cloud generating facility has been operating autonomously and out of control for several decades. A large swath of AZ is now just a constant super storm with floods and hurricane force winds which pose a huge danger to anyone who ventures too far into the state. If they make it to the facility they'll have the opportunity to score some of the only advanced technology on the planet, +2 or +3 PL beyond our current technology level.

Depending on skills/classes.. Protecting farms from bandits, same with caravans/merchants.

Searching for possible well dig sites, which can involve running into bandits, canabils, other prospectors who are wiling to kill for a good well site.

Searching for supplies/technology.

Building defenses for farm/outposts. Set up farms/outposts.

Hear rumours of someone who's developed a means of creating water, or purifying water or greater water reclaimation process, and they're either out to get it for themselves or their employer, or find/rescue said person from those who want it for themselves and not share with everyone.

The cloud generation facility needs rare parts/materials so the group has to locate and acquire (falls under searching for supplies/technology, only more specific).

Could be wandering lawmen/women trying to keep the peace, or they could be tyrants keeping a group of farms under their iron fisted rule.

You could have the party sent to retrieve parts like a new pump, condenser coils, storage drums, or other equipment that their employers would want to expand their facility.

I've always liked the epidemic storyline. Even if it isn't a plague based apocalypse one could easily do an outbreak "episode" where even what’s considered a mundane illness today could be a deadly endemic then. Your party could go off in search of proper medicine. (This plot is also good for one of those days when one of your group can’t make it to the game, their character is afflicted with the illness and has to be left behind while the rest of the party races against the clock to get medicine back in time to save him/her)
