Has anyone else seen this series? I was thinking of designing a Soul Reaper (or Death God depending on translation)? I want to design it using D&D rules since I don't have Modern. Would it be a PrC or Core class?

I think it would be a core class, since (Um.. forgot his name... until I remeber, I will call him... Freddy) Freddy wasn't anything else until he was a Soul Reaper... except that the one chick was a soul reaper and had been training for like 2000 years. So it could go both ways. Perhaps you could make a Soul Society Soul Reaper and an Earth Soul Reaper.

Isn't his name Ichigo?

well all shinigami are pretty much etherial characters with boosted strength and abilities. Might be good to have some sort of charisma based strength or other ability boosts as a template that can be added to any character that is a potential Shinigami.

Here is a feat that I have been tinkering with for a few months now. It was orignally for a Shaman King style RPG, but it works well with BLEACH as well.

Sixth Sense (or Second Sight)
Requirements: Wisdom 16
Ability: A character with the Sixth Sense ability can see all spirital creatures within their line of sight, even if they are not materialized. They can also interact with these spirits as if they normal creatures. A character with the Sixth Sense can attack spirits as if they were material, but that character must be holding the weapon and in melee with it. A character gets +2 to all combat rolls with spirits.
Special: Any character that is level 2 or higher may take this feat, but does not gain its benefits, except the ability to see a spirit, for one level.

OK, so I know it sucks, but that is why I am still working on it. I also know some of the wording is wrong, but :p .
Maybe that can help some.

Madelyne_Pryor: I believe that a Shinigami (Soul Reaper or Death God) should be a prestige class, in consideration of the abilities that the Zanpakutou (the soul slayer sword) grants its wielder.

Koujow: Actually Kurosaki Ichigo, the main character, did have some martial arts training, he attended a martial arts studio with Tatsuki, one of his classmates, when he was younger. If anything under the D&D rules he would either be a fighter or a monk. In D20 Modern, which I only have the SRD for, he would most likely be a Strong Hero.

Also the Sixth Sense Prerequisite seems to be a bit odd to me. Wis 16 is a bit high and uncommon for normal characters, most characters rolled with the 4d6 method have scores averaging in the 10-14 range. Also if we look into the PHB, we can see that most feats such as Combat Expertise, Dodge and Power Attack have [Attribute Score] 13.

Actually I've made a similar feat for another game I was running, this one is (slightly) modified for Bleach: (Though I used D&D cosmology terms).

Spirit Sight [General]
Prerequisites: Wis +13
Benefit: You can see and interact with those on the border ethereal plane. This includes both Hollows and plus ghosts. You can see incorporeal creatures even if they are not manifested. You may attack incorporeal creatures as though they were normal (corporeal) creatures.
Normal: You have a 50% chance of missing an incorporeal creature.

I'm not so sure about giving a player a +2 to all combat rolls against spirits, considering that in Sixth Sense, you've already given them the ability to hit them normally. The 50% chance to miss an incorporeal target is already the spirit's greatest advantage over corporeal creatures. Just a suggestion

I do see your point. However, my belief is that Second Sight is such a rare ability. Only, what, 4 or 5 people have second sight on the show besides Ichigo. That is why it has such a high requirment. Of course, maybe a slightly lower requirement is indeed needed. (I really think I might be lucky. When my friends and I all play, are characters never have stats lower then 15. I swear we dont cheat or anything.)

I can't really give a reason behind the +2 to combat, I just thought it would help drastically.

Anyway: Combat with a Soul Reaper and a Hallow would be bizzare to do. It would have to be considered flight almost, since, well, they are spirits. THey can fly (Dont believe, watch episode ... 3 I think. Ichigo gets thrown out the window and he floats to a stop… then gets thrown to the ground…) Should something about that be added? Like “A Soul Reaper can Fly at X speed” or something?

Sorry for the late reply, I've been a bit busy with schoolwork.

Callahan said in a previous post that Shinigami are ethereal characters, which I strongly believe to be so. If this is the case then if we look at the Ethereal Plane's description from the SRD or the DMG, it clearly reads that there is no gravity on the Ethereal Plane. This explains Ichigo stopping in mid-air after getting beaten out of Inoue's room by her brother and it explains how Captain Kuchiki Byakuya and his second in command, Abarai Rengi, are floating in mid-air at the end of episode 15.

So if we consider the Shinigami and the Hollows to be Ethereal creatures, (and I strongly suggest that we do so) then there is no need for the Shinigami to fly, because there is no gravity on the Ethereal Plane. Combat, on the other hand, would be slightly more difficult to run, but not utterly impossible, since the DMG does have rules for aerial combat.

I see only one problem with this, however, in that in the 5th or 6th episode, Sado could hit the Hollow without seeing it, although he was swinging blindly for the most part.

On the other hand:

Wow, I'd love to play with you guys, you never have stats lower than 15?! :OMG!
Haha, in any case I do agree with you in that the Second Sight is a rare ability that only some people have. However, so many people in Bleach have the ability to see Hollows, or develop the ability to see Hollows during the series, such as Inoue, Tatsuki, and Sado. Even Karin (Ichigo's sister) could see them after a while, although later it is said that all of these people developed their abilities because of their close proximity to Ichigo.

While what we see is similar to the Ethereal Plane, there are enough differences that I think it shouldn't be written of as what we know of in D&D.

It would seem that souls on the material plane have more along the lines of subjective gravity (though able to move along a designated plane instead of only solid surfaces), rather than no gravity. When shown "flying" they appear to have a transparent surface to be standing on in each example instead of simply floating.

It would seem also that the "material" and "ethereal" can still interact with each other, an example of this is stated in episode 31: powerful Shinigami have their powers reduced when they enter the living world to avoid unnecessary damage. In addition, there is the typcial collateral damage occuring during the battles caused by both sides.

Just a few thoughts. ^.^

Well wait. That one hallow had wings for flying. What episode was it. The one with Chad and the bird. He flies into the sky, with his wings, so that Chad couldn't reach him... then CHad hit him with a telephone pole. So, that suggest that maybe the hollows are affected by gravity. Maybe, Soul Reapers are etheral, but not hollows.... they are just invisible.

What about the Soul Reaper as a race. I am still only like half way through the series, but SOul Reapers aren't human. In one of the episodes, one of the soul reapers call the humans low. (Dont remeber where, BUT IT HAPPENED! :p) Maybe we should consider them as a race instead of a class... except make a SOul Reaper class for things like Ichigo case, probably prestige.

Dont you get what I mean?

Templates applied to souls would work best for Shinigami and Hollows, in my opinion.

I doubt Rukia ment another race, her brother is both very powerful and very high up the social ladder. She was probably appealing to these aspects, rather than racial.

Since each shinigami has his or her own specific set of abilities, I think the attributes from Guardians of Order's Anime d20 SRD would fit what we need for most special attacks and abilities.

Discussion on the topic seems to have died down, or is everyone studying for finals? In any case I'll post a quick comment in hopes of getting everyone back.

Since each shinigami has his or her own specific set of abilities, I think the attributes from Guardians of Order's Anime d20 SRD would fit what we need for most special attacks and abilities.

Love the idea. Anime D20 has a lot of good things in it, although I'm not as familiar with it.

I've been thinking about a solution. Now a shinigami has a sword that can transform in different weapons right? Such as Ikkaku's sword becoming a three section spear. I was thinking maybe we could create a weapon ability that mimicks it. Then we can modify the kensai prestige class (From Complete Warrior) to fit our idea of a shinigami? Does this idea work?

Something similar to the following:

Transform: This weapon has the ability to adopt the characteristics of another weapon at its wielder's command.
Strong transmutation; CL 15th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor; polymorph any object ; Price +1 bonus.

I'm guessing on the CL (Caster Level), it might be too high, but a wizard needs to be level 15 to cast the spell. I haven't seen any examples where the CL is lower than the spell that is needed to be cast. (Anybody can correct me on this?) We also might want to restrict the transformed weapon to one chosen type though.

For those of you who don't have the Complete Warrior the kenai prestige class gains weapon special abilities by trading experience for the ability on their signature weapon.

That's where Anime d20 attribute Special Attack comes into play.

Lets break it down, taking Abarai Renji's weapon, Zabimaru for instance.

Starting with its normal, sword form: Being a melee weapon, it will have Muscle-powered (one slot) as a weapon ability (allowing the user to add his or her Str bonus) as well and Melee (one slot) as a weapon defect (meaning it is a melee weapon, rather than a ranged). So far, the weapon cost zero slots, so let’s give it two slots of damage, making it 2d8.

We now have a basic (but comparatively powerful) sword.

On to Zabimaru's true form. We can give it Flexible (one slot), and two slots of Flurry (to allow up to three attacks to be made a turn, as Renji's BAB allows) and Muscle-powered (one slot); for a total of 4 slots.

Since Zabimaru is obviously not limited in range like a normal melee weapon, we have to throw Melee out as a defect, but it range is probably short enough to be Short Range. Also a weakness is shown later on: after three uses, Renji must return Zabimaru to its shortened, sword length form, opening him up for attacks. To represent this, we'll give Zabimaru the Limited Shots weapon defect, (limiting it to 3 "shots" gives back 2 slots, but since he can "reload" it, we'll spend one slot to let him "reload" it in one move action). In addition, since "reloading" make Renji vulnerable to attack, let's assign a Unique Disability to give him a -4 penalty to Defense and provoke an Attack of Opportunity (Let's give it two points back). This results in 4 points of penalties.

After adding up the weapon abilities and weapon disabilities, Zabimaru costs 0 slots. Since we have 4 slots as a maximum, let's blow the rest on weapon damage, giving it 4d8.

Whew, that was long ^.^ In a more familure form:
Name Damage Crit Damage Range Size Cost<br /> Type Increment <br /> Zabimaru 2d8 20 Slashing --- Large special<br /> (sword)<br /> Zabimaru 4d8 20 Slashing 10 ft. Large special<br /> (true form)

Sorry again for the long wait between replies. Gosh, this topic hasn't been discussed in a while. In any case,

Wanderlore: Now that you've kindly provided us an example of Anime D20 at its finest, I think we can actually get down to class construction.

Well first I need to break out my Anime D20 SRD and look over the rules a bit more, as I've said earlier I'm not very familiar with the Anime D20 rules.

Only question now is whether we're using Anime D20 rules for the whole thing or just for special attacks?

I'd say it's kind of a toss up. About half of the classes on anime d20 won't fit in this setting, but that still leaves about 6 classes. The main plus to using anime d20 classes would be flavor. On the other hand, I think d20 Modern would work very well, especialy if some of the class abilities (as talent trees) and feats were brought over from anime d20.

Thoughts?

Adventurer, Samurai, Martial Artist, Gun Bunny (Sword Bunny), Ninja, Student.

These would have trouble fitting in from what I've seen so far.
Magical Girl, Dynamic Sorcerer, Sentai Member, Giant Robot, Mecha Pilot, Shapechanger, Pet Monster Trainer, Hot Rod, Tech Genius.

Now that I've looked over the classes again, they're all basicly templates for buying attributes.

I'll see if I can get some work done on this tomorrow. ^.^

I doubt we've seen the extent of Ichigo's abilities, so it would be a hard to say what he can or can't do. So far the only special attack he has shown is kind of a toss up. While it could be considered a line or radius attack, those types would allow for reflex saves (and Evasion would have the potential to cancel it out), so I am inclined to classify it as a very powerful melee attack and/or ranged attack for simplicities sake. Of course if anyone has another idea feel free to share (I argue a lot, but I'm not completely closed minded ^.^)

Byakuya is a complete unknown to me (though it looks like we'll get to see him in action next week), so I wouldn't know where to even begin guessing for now. -.-'

I'll see if I can find any information on the manga, but promises can't be made.

Hey guys, it's been a while, but sadly real life gets in the way of gaming. It's been about two months since this thread was started and we still don't have a class up yet, so I created a quick skeleton class. It's still in the works as I whipped this up in about an hour.

Begin Skeleton Class:

Shinigami
Requirements:
[i]Base Attack Bonus:[/i] +6 OR [i]Spells:[/i] Ability to cast 3rd level spells. OR [i]Psionics:[/i] Ability to manifest 3rd level powers.

[i]Feats:[/i] ???

Hit Dice: d8
Class Skills: The Shinigami’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Hide (Dex), Knowledge (all skills taken seperately) (Int), Move Silently (Dex), Profession (Wis), and Sense Motive (Wis).
Skill Points: 4 + Int modifier.

Level BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities<br /> 1 +1 +2 +0 +0 Zanpakutou, Bonus Feat<br /> 2 +2 +3 +0 +0 Special Ability<br /> 3 +3 +3 +1 +1 Bonus Feat<br /> 4 +4 +4 +1 +1 Special Ability<br /> 5 +5 +4 +1 +1 Shikai<br /> 6 +6 +5 +2 +2 Special Ability<br /> 7 +7 +5 +2 +2 Bonus Feat<br /> 8 +8 +6 +2 +2 Special Ability<br /> 9 +9 +6 +3 +3 Bankai<br /> 10 +10 +7 +3 +3 Special Ability

Hey, I know you already have a Backbone class set up for changes, but I just thought I'd throw this out there...

What if you had Shinigami (Death God) as a class, Lieutenant as a PrC, then Captain as an epic PrC??

With this, you would have your Normal sword when you become a Death God, then you'd get your Sankai (sp?) at when you become Lieutenant, then your Bankai when you become Captain.

I know almost all Death Gods have a Sankai, but it does say in the episodes that a requirement to become a Captain is know your Bankai.

Like I said, I'm jsut throwing this out there, maybe hoping to get so more interest in this thread :P.

I'm currently working on a system for Bleach. At first we were using D20 Modern as a basis, but I'm thinking the system would work much better under DND rules. For the time being, I'm taking DND as the basis and treating the feats and extra skills and rules from D20 Modern as supplimental.

At the moment my group has come up with 4 base classes, one for each of my players. We might add a few more after we test the four we've got. The classes are shinigami, adept, quincy, and soul reaver. The shinigami and quincy should be familiar to everyone who has seen the series. The adept class covers all the folks like Orihime and Chad, although the current design we have for the class revolves around Orihime to offer a cleric equivalent class for the system.

One of my players was infatuated with a soul reaver class that I had designed in a previous campaign we were running, and wanted to bring it in as the fourth class. With a little work, we managed to incorporate the class into the anime setting without diverging too much from the series. Basically, the soul reaver is a soul who has been partially transformed into a hollow. The closest example of this would be in the episode where Ichigo nearly turns into a hollow. He managed to fight it off and unlock his shinigami powers. The soul reaver, however, is someone who managed to fight it off, but only after partially being transformed. They are characterized by one arm being a large claw (think along the lines of Chad's arm, but not so colorful, and with a claw at the end) and half their face being covered by a hollow mask (ala phantom of the opera style). The soul reavers that don't lose their mind in the process (the player character kind), now live a afterlife where they hunt down and consume hollows for sustenance (think Legacy of Kain). At higher levels, the soul reaver can begin to take on aspects of hollows it consumes and can also consume slain hollows to regenerate lost hit points or spirit points (I'll get to that in a second). Also, as they level up, their body becomes more hollow-like, with them eventually ending up with a full mask and dual claw arms. This represents a spread in the "infection" (for a lack of a better word) caused by the continued consumption of hollows. However, their increased spirit power (aka higher levels) allows them to maintain control. The overall effect is that they gain hollow like strenght and defence while not being soulless monsters.

For the time being, we are still tweaking the system, but I'll post the classes when we finalize em.

One thing is that I've left room for customization. Every 4 levels, starting at 4th, the character gains a spirit focus. These currently work like talents in D20 modern. There are many you can choose from, and if you wish, you can focus on a single tree. For the time being, all the classes may choose from the same set of tiers (although some of the abilities granted change based on class). I might come up with some class specific tiers, but that just seems kinda restrictive since I want the spirit focus to represent the randomness of spirit powers that people develope (Ori being a healer, Chad being a strong arm, differences in shinigami's soul slayers, etc).

Finally, we're using a spirit power system to govern abilities. This is very similar to the psionics system. Basically, the character has a pool of spirit points equal to his wisdom modifier times his level. All class abilities that require activation (such as smiting or using flash step) consume X amount of spirit points and can also be supplimented with extra spirit points to make the move stronger. We're still working out the numbers, so bear with me a little while and I'll try and post some more info on it when we get it finallized.

We currently run the campaign about once a week, so playtesting might be a little slow.

Oh well, I'll post more when I get some work done on the system. Hopefully this will be enough to bring this thread back to life.

Gnomish Fritos - An interesting suggestion. I'll put some more thought into that.

Penzdragon - First off thank you for attempting to revive the thread, I thought it was almost a lost cause! It really sounds like you've put a lot of work an effort into your system. Hope we can see some of that effort on the forums soon. In any case, the 'spirit focus' idea sounds great.

I'm not sure if shinigami should be referred to as Death "Gods" as they are not omnipotent or omnipresent. "Messengers of Death" seems to be a more accurate translation as they take people who have died to heaven (Soul Society).

Sorry if I sound a little picky. Just pointing out a difference in translation.

Another thing I'd like to come up with is some sort of bonus that members of each shinigami squad recieve. For example, 13th squad might get minor healing abilities or some such thing. The problem here is that I don't quite recall what each squads function is. Does anyone happen to know?

BTW, I base all my info off the anime. I have not read the manga and I don't intend to, mainly because I tend enjoy the action series in animated form and don't want to ruin the story.

Also, about translation notes, I think it would be best to just refer to them as shinigami. I don't know why, but it just seems cooler.

Oh, and about the prestige class idea. Lt and Capt are more like titles than complete classes. The reason I say this is because Ichigo manages to reach equivalent power in shinigami powers without actually being a cpt or lt. So when designing them, they should gain all the equivalent powers that they would if they had taken a level in shinigami and then gain some bonus involving the beuracracy of soul society. Perhaps minions or the ability to requisition forbidden materials. Also, perhaps throw in one move or two that would represent their access to training that lower ranked members can't get.

I'm thinking of maybe having the upper levels of regular shinigami improve the size and manipulation of the spirit pool (to reflect the ability of natural shinigami like Ichigo to just go apeshit on folks) and having the lt and capt levels grant minions and some special moves that represent the special training that these characters have recieved. I dunno. I'll put some thought into it. Currently, I like the idea of PCs being rogue shinigami like Ichigo, so I hadn't really thought of allowing them to achieve capt and lt.

The one complication I have here with my idea is with the folks who were shinigami in soul society that fell out of favor. They don't quite have the uberpowers of natural shinigami like Ichigo, but they also lose access to training granted by soul society. I may just remove the distinction that I have made between natural and trained shinigami (since technically Ichigo did have some training from the shopkeeper, although he didn't put in the years that it takes regular shinigami) or just give rogue shinigami access to training from someone like the shopkeeper.

I dunno. I'm coming up with this stuff as I type, so I haven't put much thought into it. I'll bring it up at the next play session we have and see what my players think about the situation (although they haven't seen the series, so any input they have would be based solely on mechanics and balancing issues within the D20 system itself). Maybe I should just have some feats that cover the natural shinigami aspect... perhaps one that accelerates training. I've already got plans for feats that increase the spirit pool, which would reflect the whole uber spirit powers of Ichigo.

Try using the code format block. (Put [] between the word code and '/' followed by code also in [] when your done.) Just add spaces between the text. It should work. (Also shortening Base Attack Bonus to BAB and Fort Save to just Fort would also save some space.) Check the Class and Prestige Class boards for more hints. I think they have a sticky on formatting prestige and core classes.

Looks very good, although I haven't finished reading it yet, will edit this later. Your Flash Step is much better than what I came up with. Using a charge action is genius!

On the other hand for shinigami such as Zaraki Kenpachi (11th Squadron Captain) I was thinking about using a Flaw to represent his inability to use Bankai or Shikai. Flaws were first found in Unearthed Arcana (I believe). By picking a flaw the character can choose a new feat.

Unknown Zanpakutou [Flaw]
Prerequisite: Must have shikai and bankai class features.
Effect: The character does not gain shikai and bankai class features.

Ehh, on second thought maybe not since this gives up two class features for one feat. Not exactly an even trade.

------

I've also only watch the anime and haven't read the manga.

I'm not sure what you mean by an ability from their division skills class ability. But the following divisions should definately have varying skill sets:

4th: Healing (Suggestion: Make Heal a class skill and maybe the ability to cure minor wounds several times per day?)
11th: Combat (Zaraki and his subordinates seem to love fighting and would probably fight even against orders. Suggestion: Put Bluff on their skill list. Bluff can also be used as a combat skill in feinting blows.)
12th: Research (Captain Mayuri has said several times that he is the head of research. Add Knowledge (Any - Each knowledge skill must be purchased separately) or give them a synergy bonus to knowledge.)

-----

EDIT: (After Reading)

You didn't mention any kind of limits for a lot of the class abilities. Homing Arrow and Rain of Arrows should have a limit as to number of times per day the class ability can be invoked. (I'm guessing once per day or something similar.)

There is a minor error in Adept class. Under Spirit Focus you put:
Spirit Focus: At level 4 and every four levels after, the adept gains an ability from the spirit focus list.

However this is not what is written on the table! This should be "At 4th level and every even level after, the adept gains an ability from the spirit focus list."

Also how does Turn Hollow work? It looks like it works as Turn Undead, but you didn't elaborate on how. Do we turn hollows as clerics of our adept class level? I assume so, but please clarify.

-----

Although it's still in the playtesting stage, it is still an impressive amount of work. I hope you post more soon so that the rest of us can also start playtesting.

For the abilities like rain of arrows, I'm going to have them cost x spirit points to use and have an addition set of benefits that can be obtained by putting extra spirit points into the use (like the 3e psionics system). However, I haven't tweaked the costing system yet, so I omitted the spirit costs for the time being.

I used some copy/pasting to save time. I just pasted the spirit focus description from shinigami over to the adept and forgot to edit the differences. I'll get on that.

For the division abilities, I intend on coming up with a list of abilities that the character gains at 5th, 10th, and 15th level that depend on what division they are from. For example, I'd come up with 3 abilities that seem to fit R&D and have the character gain them at the appropriate level. This is just my way of increasing the customization of characters while also alccounting for the division differences present in the anime.

For Ken, perhaps just give a feat that the character can take at any level before they obtain the shikai class ability. Upon achieving the level for shikai, they recieve some sort of other bonus instead. Perhaps an increased spirit pool or a str or con increase (maybe even a spirit focus slot once I hash out that system). Same goes for when they achieve the level to obtain bankai.

Turn hollow works just like turning undead. When I came up with the wording for the class description, I just copied the same format as the turn undead ability. When I compile all my stuff into one file, I'll probably include a section on turning hollows so that I don't have to have a large amount of text in class descriptions.

Right now, most of my developement work is focused on getting the soul reaver class done and working on soul focus. The soul focus is taking a while because I want each ability to do something cool. I don't want it to end up as just 30 different ways to deal 5d6 (for example, lightning bolt vs. fireball vs. cone of cold, etc). If I come up with something like ice armor, I want it to do cool stuff in addition to just adding a defence bonus. If I come up with flaming weapon or something, I don't want it to just add +1d6 fire dmg. As far as the reaver, there's not really any basis in the anime for the class, so it's taking just a little longer to make.

I'm on borrowed time atm, so I'll fix up the formatting and such in a couple of hours.

Not all Shinigami are good. Even the ones who aren't out and out bad can be major SOBs. I'd say They're more Lawful than anything, with LN perhaps being the most common alignment.

That restriction was mainly put in place specifically for PCs. As far as I can tell, most shinigami atleast start good (while in the academy or whatnot), so I had the restriction. I might remove it at some other time. The reason I didn't restrict them to lawful was because natural shinigami like Ichigo are very chaotic due to their existence outside of soul society. And honestly, neutral blows. I'd hate have to restrict my characters to playing neutral if they want to play this class. I'll probably just remove the restrictions.

EDIT: Some class stuff has been changed. Check back on the first page for a rough draft of all 4 classes (still no spirit points costs yet).

We tried coming up with some spirit focus trees and tested them over the weekend, but they didn't seem very balanced, although they made for some pretty interesting characters. We're going to give it one more week before we finalize the first sets of spirit focuses. In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas on spirit focuses, lemme know (examples of these include Chad's arm and the fairie shields and such). One thing we might try is to look at some of the spells from the PHB that would be gained at similar levels and just tweak em a bit. I dunno yet.

Well after reading all the posts here l must say there are some good starting blocks here for Bleach Clases ... well heres my own thoughts on this.

======Spoilers Below======

Races:
-Human
[As the normal Human race see PHB for stats]
-Shinigami "Death God"
[The Shinigami race should be a +1LA]
-Vaizard "The Army Of Masks/Masked Army"
[The Vaizard race should be a +2LA]
-Hollow
[The Hollow race should be a +1LA]
-Arankaru "Fractured Masks"
[The Arankaru race should be a +2LA]
==============
Class:
Core Class:
-Shinigami
-Hollow
-Human Soul [l have no idea what to call this class yet]
PC Clases:
-Division PC
[I belive that each division should have its own PC class, these pc class can only be started to be made when all of the divisions roles are know]
-Vice Captain
-Captain
-Vaizard [Shinigami Only]
-Arankaru [Hollow Only]
==============
Shinigami Zanpaku:
Soul Cutters are the swords of the shinigami. They are used to cleanse or destroy Evil. soul cutters have three forms: normal, initial* (name) release, and ban* release. Lower level to some middle class shinigami do not know the names of their soul cutters and therefore cannot release them. To release a soul cutter you must shout its name. You can only learn the swords name by talking to it and trusting it.

[I belive that Soul Cutters should be made useing the new rules form Legacy Of Weapons to make the soul cutter.]

==============
Division/Ranks:
Each Division has 100 Seated officers in it 100 being the lowest and number 1 being the Captain of the division, l was thinking that for a Shinigami to go up in a rank they whould have to preform some sort of task set out by the captain of there division.

The Unseated Shinigami are the lowest in the division. l think the unseated Shinigami should be classed as commoners with no levels in the Shinigami core clase

Shinigami Divisions:
-1st Division
-2nd Division - Special OP Brigade
-3rd Division
-4th Division
-5th Division
-6th Division
-7th Division
-8th Division
-9th Division
-10th Division
-11th Division
-12th Division
-13th Division
==============
The Four Noble House's:
Kuchiki
Shihouin
Shiba (- maybe -)
[There is no information about them so they are going to have to wait]
=======FEAT'S=======
Konpaku Styles
-ZanJutsu - Sword Art
-Hakuda - Hand To Hand Art
-Hohou - Movement Art
-Kidou - Demon Art
-Bannougata - All Around Type

Demon Art Techniques,Kidou [Shinigami Only]
Benefit: The Shinigami gain's the ability to cast Demon Art spells upto 9th lvl
Special: This Talent may be taken once, If you take this feat you may not take any other Konpaku feats
==============

As you can see this is needs a lot of work but l do hope l have started to build the foundations for such a great class :D

Awesome, someone else working on some Bleach material. It's always good to have more people to mooch off of.

There are a couple things you mentioned that I've never heard of, so I'm assuming that they are mentioned in the manga and haven't been introduced in the anime yet. Gives me something to look forward to.

I really like the unique feat idea (ie, you can only take on konpaku feat), and I'm liking the idea of using existing rule sets to govern soul slayers. I haven't checked out the legacy of weapons rule set, so I'm going to have to go check that out. This has gotten me thinking about the weapon familiars from the Arcana book, so I may reread that and see if I can apply that to soul slayers as well.

Hi, Penzdragon heres some more info
==============
Soul Cutters:
Asauchi (Shallow Hit)
Wielder: Shinigami Dropouts

Description:
Soul Society is very adamant about zanpaku-to having names. So much so they even give an overall name to blades so weak they don't have their own; Asauchi. That's what the blank blades carried by Shinigami who are too weak to gain a spot in one of the 13 Divisions are called. Appearance-wise, it's a normal katana with a plain, oval crossguard. Since it's so weak it can't find it's own name, it obviously doesn't have a Shikai, let alone a Bankai. The only thing that sets it apart from a mundane katana is that it is capable of harming a shinigami.

==============

Spoilers Below Highlight To Read

Vaizard "The Army Of Masks/Masked Army"
[Vaizard's are Shinigami that have used forbidden techniques to gain the same power as a hollow, ie they have no limit on the Konpaku Styles this means that they can master all the Konpaku Styles]

Arankaru "Fractured Masks
[Arankaru are Hollows that have there masked removed in doing this they gain powers like a Shingami, this also includes Soul Cutters !]
==============

Konpaku Styles Info
-ZanJutsu - Sword Art
Shingami who chose the ZanJutsu Style can only use techniques from this feat tree.
-Hakuda - Hand To Hand Art
Shingami who chose the Hakuda Style can only use techniques from this feat tree.
-Hohou - Movement Art
Shingami who chose the Hohou Style can only use techniques from this feat tree.
-Kidou - Demon Art
Shingami who chose the Kidou Style can only use techniques from this feat tree.
-Bannougata - All Around Type
Shingami who chose to be come a Bannougata can take feats from all four feat trees but can never master any of the Konpaku Styles

The Arankaru "Fractured Masks" sound pretty similar to the soul reaver class I was working on (people who we're fully or partially consumed as a hollow but managed to prevent the transformation somehow, and thus have hollow like abilities and appearance), although the soul reaver class does not gain shinigami powers. I may look into incorporating those two together so that my soul reaver class fits into the bleach universe better. For Arankaru NPCs, I might just give them 2 levels of soul reaver and then tack on shinigami levels to make them the CR I want instead of dealing with level adjustments.

While it's always nice to include all the races as playable, I'm not sure I'd allow players to play hollows or vaizards (atleast starting off, I would probably allow them to undergo transformations if they can pull it off). The exception would be an all hollow group.

Time is limited atm, so I'll post more later.

hey everyone. as far as the sixth sense ability goes, why not use existing abilities as a base like the shaman ability from oriental adventures called "ghost sight" a shaman of 2nd level and above can see ethereal creatures (including spirits) as easily as he sees material creatures and objects. The shaman can easily distinguish between ethereal creaturees and material ones, because ethereal creatures appear translucent and indistinct or if everybody wants to start from scratch that's fine too.
Seeing as how no two characters in bleach have had identical abilities (save for the ones that seem to be taught in the school) why not have it required that every shinigami be a multiclass character? (i.e. Kenpachi would be a shinigami/barbarian, Hinamori would be an illusionist/shinigami, etc)
Anyways, these are just a few ideas to throw around, do with them as you will

Skeleton Outline of Spirit Sight in my campaign (which is given to all PC's for free at first level).

Spirit Sight (Feat)
Player characters recieve this feat for free at first level.
This feat allows the character to observed spirits and distinguish them from the real world. In addition, the character may make a wisdom check to detect the presence of spirits.

The DC should be based upon the distance between the two and the power level of the spirit, but as a baseline, it is a DC 15 to detect the presence of spirits within 3 levels of the character within 300 yards. This feat is always on and the DM should roll in secret against DC 15 whenever a being of appropriate power comes within 300 yards of the character. Also, as a side note, the term spirit includes ghosts, hollows, shinigami, soul reavers, manifestations of class abilities, and spirit focus manifestations such as wings.

Also, as far as multiclassing, I introduced spirit focuses to help explain the differences between characters of the same class and such.

I'd like to point out some background on the campaign we're using to test these rules.

We started the campaign when the characters were at age 6 (they were all related, 2 characters were twins who live with their grandfather (their parents had been killed when they were 4) and the other two were cousins to the twins and each other). At this point, the characters were a blank slate. Ability scores had been rolled, but they hadn't been assigned to stats, and the characters weren't told what the classes were (none of them knew anything about the bleach anime). They were spending the summer at their grandfather's house (he was a retired quincy, one the only two in the world, the other being the grandfather seen in the anime). The characters role played their characters as children enjoying the summer on a lake, swimming a such. One day when they are swimming, they run into some other kids who live by the lake and swim with them for a while. At the end of the day, after some idle chat with their grandfather, they discover that the children had drowned in the lake 2 days earlier. This is the point where the players discover they can see ghosts. The next day, they go back to play with the children, and as they play, a shinigami approaches to send the children to the afterlife. The PC's attack the shinigami (taking him by surprise cause he wasn't used to being seen) when he draws his sword, and as they annoy him, a hollow attacks. The shinigami defeats the hollow, but when he does so, a small portion of the hollows mask remains. One of the PCs, being a curious child, picks it up and puts it on. The hollow begins to take the boy over, but when the grandfather hears the cries for help from the children, he comes and uses some spirit powers to help contain the hollow. Thus, I allow the PC a saving throw, he succeeds, and halts the transformation, becoming a soul reaver instead. The shinigami, attempting to perform his duty of destroying soul reavers, is confronted by the protective grandfather, a fight ensues, and in the process the shinigami is killed and the grandfather and the PCs wounded (only one in still concious). The soul reaver PC, confused, runs off into the night. After a few hours, another shinigami comes to check on his missing fellow. Here he finds the concious PC trying to drag his family back into the house to try and treat their wounds. The shinigami senses the boys spirit powers and offers to save the lives of his family if he comes to train as a shinigami. That PC takes up the offer and is taken to the spirit realm for shinigami training and the others are healed. They awake to find the two PCs gone. They panic and call the cops. The cops come, investigate the case as a kidnapping, but find no leads. One of the remaining PCs is one of the ones living with the grandfather, so he remains with him. The other is picked up by his parents, who return to their home in Chicago (where our campaign is based). Ten years pass. The one who remained with the grandfather learns he is a quincy and decides to train with him. He gains level one in that class and is asked a series of questions to determine how to assign his ability scores. The same goes for the shinigami, who trains there for 10 years. The one who became a soul slayer, roams the streets of Chicago hunting minor hollows for 10 years to sustain himself. Finally, the character who returned to Chicago is a normal child who developes random spirit powers (the adept class). We spend two game sessions doing some roleplaying for the 10 years of training to get the characters to level 3 and to also introduce them to the background of their classes. The next session, we had all the characters meet. The quincy moves in with his cousin in Chicago to start high school, the shinigami is assigned to that area of Chicago for his patrol, and the soul reaver has been roaming the area for a while. One day after school, they all happen to run into each other.

Once the PC group was together, they encountered an NPC who acted as their nemesis until they attained level 5 (at which point the finally managed to defeat him). In their first encounter with him, he used a spiritual anchor to anchor the shinigami and soul reavers in the group to the real world. Up until the point, those PC's had been allowed to operate as if invisible and with the ability to go through walls and such, just like a ghost. The anchor was mainly just to make things easier to run. The anchor caused the spirit characters to become visible to the real world with the forms they would have had if they were normal. The shinigami robes and soul slayer and the soul reavers arm and mask were still on the characters, but only visible to spiritually aware characters. This allowed them to operate normally as teenagers in the real world, and avoided the complication of having to remove their spirit from their body to function in battle. After the battle, the shinigami reported back to his superior who placed him on sick leave, allowing him to act freely with the party instead of having to do his job. The two PCs moved in with the one cousin, making up stories to explain their 10 year absence.

Most of this isn't very conventional, but I found it was the best way to avoid complications with a straight port of bleach to D20 modern and it also seemed the best way to introduce characters to an anime they had never heard of.

A couple things about running a Bleach campaign that I've noticed.

1. In Bleach, fights tend to be against one powerful opponent. I've tried to duplicate this in my campaign. As a result, characters are levelling quickly due to the high CR of each encounter. However, the quick level progression helps keep with the pace of the anime (notice how quickly Ichigo gains power). They will be gaining levels fast and will quickly attain abilities that the anime says takes regular folks a long time to get. You need to make note that the characters are just as exceptional as those in the anime. As such, don't subject them to the 10 year training periods and such that normal shinigami and the like go thru. Every level or so, throw in a short 3 day training session or something. Try to have a sensei or focus item present to facilitate this (like the shop owner or the quincy glove).

2. Hollows are unique. Each one should be tailor made, not pulled out of the monster's manual. With the exceptions of imps (animal hollows, CR 1/2, usually accompany bigger hollows) and archnemesis characters, my players haven't fought the same thing twice. This keeps battles interesting, and also keeps the players on their toes because they have no idea what to expect next.

3. Even though the classes were designed around the DND system, I've maintained action points from my original D20 system. These help my players a ton. They make an insanely huge difference. While they seem to munchkin up the game a bit by giving the players an "In Case of Emergency", the players love it, and that's the important part. I'd suggest everyone include action points in their campaign. The only note on this is, players level quickly, and as such refresh AP a lot. Given this, you might want to cut down on the amount of AP they get per level.

4. Players want spirit focuses to interact with the regular skills granted by their class, and some folks don't want spirit focuses that do similar things to their class abilities available to players outside their class, because then they don't feel as unique. I'm still working on this part.

Well, the campaign is still going. Most of the work we've put into has been coming up with spirit focuses for each character and tweaking costs on class abilities. The characters are lvl 8 at the moment, and are very close to hitting 9, which is the point where the shinigami get to release their soul slayers. The players have some quirky ideas on how their released forms will work, so it should be interesting.

Two things I've noticed so far about the campaign that I need to address.

1. Adepts seem underpowered in comparison to other classes. I might work on this a little. However, I'm leaving them as the only healers, so that may balance things out.

2. My players are traditional DND players. They like loot. I'm having a hard time incorporating traditional loot into the bleach world. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Just tossing a suggestion in here.

What if we use something similar to Weapons of Legacy rules for zanpakutou (soul slayer)? It doesn't have to be the same. Just let the weapon gain abilities as the character levels up.

Here's an short example of a zanpakutou that I made up on the fly.

I'm not exactly using Weapons of Legacy rules. WoL also detracts hp, attack and saves when a character wields a legacy weapon. I dislike using such a system, plus it's hard for both player and DM to keep track of how much hp/attack/save is lost when wielding a legacy weapon. I also dropped weapon requirements, considering only the shinigami will use his/her zanpakutou.

Hmmm... I like it. I need to check out this legacy weapon rule set. Two of my shinigami hit level nine last weekend, so now is the time for me to hash out the system.

My quincy hit level nine as well, and I don't think homing arrow is on par with shikai, so I've added that it also makes the shot use the following crit stats (19-20/x4).

The adepts also seem underpowered still. I'm still working on this. My current fix is to increase the goodness of the spirit focuses they have chosen, but its not a long term fix because I haven't designated any spirit focuses as adept only. I may buff them by removing the healing abilities to a spirit focus tree and allowing them to choose 3 spirit trees instead of two.

As far as soul reavers, I think they are pretty much on par with shinigami (rend + improved crit(claw) is pure power). The only problem I've noticed is that they can drain spirit points and such, but the only thing they have to spend them on it their spirit focus. I may work on that.

Notes on spirit focuses:

Currently, we're using an informal system. It basically consists of me asking what abilities they'd like to have (ie "If your character were a super hero, what would be his powers?") and then us working out some abilities that seem balanced.

Heres what my guys have so far:

Shinigami 1:

Lvl 1 - Spirit Shield (grants damage reduction x for up to y sources of damage at the cost of z spirit points, move action to activate).

Lvl 2 - Blinding Shield (attacker must make a fort save when ever he hits the character when the spirit shield is active or be blinded for 1d4 rounds).

Shinigami 2:

Lvl 1 - Earthquake (everyone within x feet must make a balance check or fall prone)

Lvl 2 - Earthsnare (x prone targets within y feet become grappled, must make an escape artist/reflex check to escape, lasts up to z rounds).

Soul Reaver 1:

Lvl 1 - Thorns (whenever hit in melee, may spend x spirit points to do x damage to the attacker, no save)

Lvl 2 - Thorns (whenever hit in melee, may spend x spirit points to do Yd8 damage to the attacker, no save)

I'm out of time at the moment. I'll post later with the quincy and the two adepts.

Quincy 1:

Lvl 1 - Blink (as a move action, the character may teleport up to 90 feet away).

Lvl 2 - Teleporting Attack (the character can make his ranged attacks teleport to the target, allowing him to ignore cover and granting a chance to catch the target flat footed).

Adept 1:

Lvl 1 - Shadow Clone (the character may create two illusionary copies of himself that dissapate when attacked, they mimic the user exactly)

Lvl 2 - Blur (All attacks directed at the character have a 25% miss chance)

Lvl 1 - Spirit Gun (as a ranged touch attack, the character may spend X spirit points to deal Yd8 points of damage. Any damage dealt in excess of the targets life continues on in a straight line until all the damage has been used)

Lvl 2 - Spirit Shotgun (as a ranged touch attack, the character may spend x spirit points to deal Yd8 points of damage to all targets in a 25 foot cone)

Adept 2:

Lvl 1 - Alchemy (may transmute minor objects, may spend x spirit points to make a touch attack that deals Yd8 transmutation damage to target)

Lvl 2 - Alchemy (may transmute medium objects, may spend x spirit points to make a touch attack that deals Yd8 transmutation damage to target)

Lvl 1 - Kinetics (may move objects up to x pounds, may spend x spirit points as an attack to deal 1d20 crushing damage to target)

Lvl 2 - Kinetics (may move objects up to x pounds, may spend x spirit points as an attack to deal 2d20 crushing damage to target)

Note, all these abilities have costs and take up actions, even if I forgot to note them.

Penzdragon: What is the formula that you use for spirit focuses?

Shinigami 1:

Lvl 1 - Spirit Shield (grants damage reduction x for up to y sources of damage at the cost of z spirit points, move action to activate).

Does x+y = z in this case?
Also for those abilities with just X and Y, how are those two variables correlated?

Quincy 1:

Lvl 1 - Blink (as a move action, the character may teleport up to 90 feet away).

Does the player teleport 90 ft. in a direction where he/she has line of sight? (Similar to Dimensional Door) Or can they teleport 90 ft. even if a wall is blocking them from seeing what's on the other side? Logic seems to dictate the first explanation.

-----
Also for the division skills, are we looking at something similar to the following?

11th Division
Level 5: Overwhelming Aura: Opponents must roll a will save (DC = 15 + # of additional spirit points) when the shinigami activates and/or maintains this aura. The opponent is shaken. This aura cost 2 spirit points to activate and 1 spirit point per round to maintain it. Additional spirit points can be used placed to increase the DC. The aura can be activated as a free action.
Level 10: Powerful Strike: The Shinigami can channel their strength behind their attacks. This technique costs 10 spirit points and uses a swift action, but in return, the shinigami may double their strength modifier and add it to their melee attack and damage rolls for that round.
Level 15: Crippling Blow: This ability costs 15 spirit points and uses a swift action to activate. When the shinigami hits an opponent, the opponent must make a fortitude save (DC 25 + # of additional spirit points). If this fails the opponent takes 2x the normal damage. The opponent also loses any spirit points they have left in reserve.

I had the x, y, and z there as placeholders because we're still working out the numbers.

The only exception is the thorns level 1 ability. The character may spend up to to his maximum spirit points (denoted x), and does that much damage to the target.

For the blink, we're still working on it. In general, that's how its worked. However, I've allowed him to blink thru doors and I've also allowed him to use teleportation to avoid falling damage.

For the division skills, that looks pretty good. For the time being, we've just been using those as bonus feat slots until we get a better idea of what all the divisions are.

For the most part, I've been pretty lax on adhering strictly to hard set rules since the game is in its testing phase and have been focusing more on just enjoying the game.

Well, I'm more focused on setting up a system for it than trying to define the characters in the series. I think it takes away from the system because people start debating the stats of the characters instead of working on the mechanics of the system. On side note, when running my campaign, I've made up all the NPCs instead of taking them from the anime. This is mainly because some of my players have started watching the series and I want to keep them guessing about NPCs and such.

I've been palying around with a bleach campaign setting for quite a while. My attempt at a prestige class was horrible though. After going through this forum, I've done quit a bit of thinking.
My original concept was for there to be shinikami core class, the divisions to be prestige classes available only to shinikami, and then have the shinikami representative class only available to non shinikami. This was hard since not all divisions seemed to have specialties. Other than r&d, black ops, kenpachis squad, and 4th squad healers, the others aren't featured as well. You only get a representation of their lts and cptns. That and where this leaves mages, since shinikami use Kido, and those are so organized as to be numbered. I've written up the 1st and 33rd taken from the 1st two manga (I'm not up to rewatching 69 eps yet)

So many dillemas. So hopefully the good ideas keep coming ^^

Not sure about double posting... Oh well.
Anyway, I bought d20 modern and besm.... D20 modern is horrible in my opinion. The talent tree is only slightly useful.
So I was thinking of just modifying besm.
For instances, races.
In bleach there are only three races that are used.
Kami, mod souls, and humans.
Humans are easy.
Kami should have the incorpore the incorporeal template from the besm monster manual, loosing the bonuses for being human. That would mean it would cost 14 discretionary points to be a kami. Then, it may be prudent to also make them a native outsider, since technically soul society is another plane.

Mod-souls would make an interesting race. They need a body, so you could use a corpse, gigai, animal, or toy as a body. Mod-souls also enhance one aspect of the host body(kon was a legs unit) so could have options of innate abilities, which ill work on later and add an edit.

Maybe it's me being dumb (well, I have only seen the first six episodes from Blech, but)....

Shinigami as a race is completely unknown to me, but as a class.... well, the ones in the first page are cool.

Now, in simplicity.... the D20 Future book has an Advanced Class called 'Purifier' on its 'From the Dark Heart Of Space' setting. Sounds like a hard-and-fast Shinigami class to me. (don't like D&D as much as I like D20M and BESm, that's why I say this).

Ok, I'm going to say here and now, I've never played d20 Modern, just DnD. However, I think you're barking up the wrong tree a bit with base classes. I think that for the Shinigami we should be talking a Template, followed up by a Prestige Class (I don't know if you use those in d20 Modern, but I think you get my drift).

Shinigami Template
"Shinigami" is an acquired template that can be added to any giant, humanoid or monstrous humanoid. The creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature) must have a Charisma score of at least 6.

A Shinigami uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type
The creature’s type changes to Outsider. Do not recalculate the creature’s base attack bonus, saves, or skill points. It gains the incorporeal subtype. Size is unchanged.

Armor Class
Natural armor is the same as the base creature’s but applies only to ethereal encounters. It also gains a deflection bonus equal to its Charisma modifier or +1, whichever is higher.

Special Attacks
A Shinigami retains all the special attacks of the base creature. It also gains the Zanpaktou special attack

Zanpaktou (Su)
The Shinigami can manifest a spiritual Katana (which they gain automatic proficiency with) from their own life essence as a free action. It deals damage as a normal Katana, but gains a bonus on attack and damage equal to their Charisma bonus.

Special Qualities
A ghost has all the special qualities of the base creature as well as those described below.

Abilities
Str +4; Dex +6; Con +2; Int +0; Wis +2; Cha +6;

Environment
Any, often as base creature.

Organization
Solitary, Squad (5-8), or Division (12-20).

Challenge Rating
Same as the base creature +4.

Level Adjustment
Same as the base creature +7.

The problem with your idea of a template is an ecl of 7.... If you go the besm route its less than an ecl of 2.... Much easier for players to deal with game wise. As for the prestige class, it would look plausable until you see further into the series and notice student shikikami, and the fact that ichigo just mauls them *and if he was a higher student with quite a few ranks of unknown powers or whatever its called* even allowing for shikigami to be a base class, only a kami would normall be one. You see one human with the class, and he has to use an item of power to become incorporeal to use his powers. So kami as a race makes good sense to mee ^^: having the divisions as prestige classes would also be very doable.

Talking from personal experience, I have to say this: BESM d20 is heavily unbalanced and frankly broken. I was balancing that against DnD (which, while hardly perfect, is still a lot better balanced than BESM), and had in fact based this on the Ghost template from the SRD. The ECL may be a little higher on the template than is really necessary, but I was playing to the side of caution.

On the other hand for shinigami such as Zaraki Kenpachi (11th Squadron Captain) I was thinking about using a Flaw to represent his inability to use Bankai or Shikai.

Actually, having only recently started watching the series(though I've seen through the Soul Society arc), my impression is that Kenpachi would be a multiclass Barbarian/Shinigami, rather than a flawed Shinigami. If it helps, think over these examples:

-Damage Reduction. In the first encounter, Ichigo is completely unable to scratch Kenpachi with his sword until he powers up his Zanpakutoh
-Rage. Kenpachi can, by removing his special eye-patch, dramatically increase his fighting prowess to frightening levels
-HD. Tell me Kenpachi isn't one of the highest ranking Captains in terms of HP, I dare you. :D
-Overruling Bloodrage: Even being a Captain, Kenpachi's loyalty and trust lie only with his skill in battle. He couldn't be less interested in the outcome of Soul Society, just as long as he gets to clash blades. Definitely not Lawful, in most respects.

Now, for the Zanpakutoh, since each one has a separate life-force within it, it almost seems to follow the rules of a Familiar/Animal Companion/Mount in that it gains abilities as the Shinigami grows in power. Any thoughts on incorporating that? Because as seen with Kenpachi and Renji, the Zanpakutoh is able to "heal" itself and reform. Renji even has several abilities that work under the circumstance of being shattered. That makes it seem much less a weapon, and much more a creature.

I considered going down that route, butfound myself extremely limited in any similar ideas that would be particularly close. The nearest I could find was the Item Familiar Feat. Over and above that, there isn't much I could see. Really, the Zanpakuto's are representations of the subconcious, given form and power by the Shinigami, rather than companions. So, I ended up taking the cop-out route and using the tried and tested 'they become more magical' route.

Lieutenant will be a Prestige Class, and Captain will be an Epic Prestige Class. The system itself will likely be a mix of the 3.5 rules and the d20 Modern rules. Somethings from both fit Bleach almost perfectly. I might post my creation here once I finish it, if anyone is interested at all...

I posted this in Darkness is good's Shinigami class thread, also:

I borrowed a bunch of ideas from all over the place (including this thread) and came up with a version of a Shinigami class, too. I tried to keep it as true to the anime as possible while using as many existing D&D rules as I could. The problem was that Shinigami have so many different abilities that there was no way one class could cover them all without being totally overpowered. So I split it up into a mix-and-match sort of "choose your own power" type thing. Kinda like Talents or whatever in WoW. That may have overcomplicated the class, but I liked it better this way.

I decided to use tweaked Item Familars for the Zanpakuto/Soul Slayer. Figuring out shikai and bankai powers will require a lot of player/DM discussion, I think, but I'm ok with that.

This first file has the basic info, including a link to the d20srd page for Item Familiar. The other four files describe the 4 paths available via Combat Arts.

http://www.briarebellion.com/shinigami-base.rtf
http://www.briarebellion.com/shinigami-zanjutsu.rtf
http://www.briarebellion.com/shinigami-hakuda.rtf
http://www.briarebellion.com/shinigami-hohou.rtf
http://www.briarebellion.com/shinigami-kidou.rtf

I had to move a lot of spells around on the Kidou list because giving access to 3rd level arcane spells before character level 5 seemed stupid to me. And a lot of the spellcasting will be pretty limited due to Spirit Point cost.

So give it a look, if you're bored enough. :D I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but I really wanted to make my own iteration of the Shinigami.

And for the manga fans, here's my Vizard prestige class. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of info yet on just what their specific abilities are. I took a cue from Ichigo's fight against Byakuya and his behavior in the last several chapters of the manga and adapted the Frenzied Berserker from the Complete Warrior with a little Bleach flavor.

There's a new 1st level feat in here too.

I had the idea to create a Bleach d20, but someone convinced me not to. I did do some pondering about it, though.

A few things are difficult to fit into the d20 system. D20 is based on a logical progression of power by gradually gaining experience, but Ichigo's power in the series increases rapidly to rise to a challenge, sometimes during a fight - for example (spoiler)
Show
during the Kenpachi fight, Ichigo begins completely unable to cut Kenpachi, who conversely utterly kills Ichigo. By the end of the fight, he's a match for Kenpachi even without Kenpachi's eyepatch.

Another thought: Zaraki Kenpachi is a kind of shinigami warrior who's essentially given up all spirit magic - not unlike a barbarian, except that he's illiterate in a magical sense.

Well, like I said, he definitely has multiclassed. He's been a shinigami long enough to have a Zanpakuto, but not long enough to name it, as though you might, for instance, get a Zanpakuto at 1st level, and name it at 2nd or 3rd level. Zaraki probably doesn't have more than 1 or 2 levels as a Shinigami, and has put his remaining levels into a mix of Fighter and Barbarian.

Also, on the subject of Zaraki, anybody else get the feeling that they made mention of Zaraki not naming his Zanpakuto only to have him name it at a later date? ;)

Is it just me or is there one problem with Shinigami being a class or race or anything. All the death gods were once living spirits! You have to be dead to become a spirit essence capable of becoming a death god. This however makes an ultimately interesting idea. What if when you died in DnD you didn't have to make a new character? Follow me here, what if when your character dies you decide whether or not you want to try to bring him in as a spirit. Through rolls and training he can become a whole knew entity in the DnD world. A warrior spirit able to rejoin the group under certain circumstances (I mean make it hard to become a death god of course but still). Also this gives freedom to also possibly give introduction of a new item, the Gigai. Your knewly ethereal character could somehow precure a Gigai to reintroduce him into the land of the living and still be able to leave that body to become a Shinigami. :D

Soul reaver was a throwback to Legacy of Kain, the inspiration for that particular class. I've got no problems changing the name, but I'm curious as to know why. As a note, please do not confuse the term soul reaver with the term soul reaper (aka shinigami).

As a note, reave has two definitions. The first means to break or tear apart, so soul reaver seems a fitting name for a claws capable of harming spiritual beings. The second means to plunder or steal, which is consistent with the ability to consume souls.

well all shinigami are pretty much etherial characters with boosted strength and abilities. Might be good to have some sort of charisma based strength or other ability boosts as a template that can be added to any character that is a potential Shinigami.

i was thinking that the two sources of soul reaper/ shinigami would have different setups like the the earth based SR would be more like the fighter and the Soul society would be more like a caster arcane or divine

Lieutenant will be a Prestige Class, and Captain will be an Epic Prestige Class. The system itself will likely be a mix of the 3.5 rules and the d20 Modern rules. Somethings from both fit Bleach almost perfectly. I might post my creation here once I finish it, if anyone is interested at all...

i am also very interested and i joined for the same reason XDDD
let me know whats up and i'll be sure to bookmark this thread. I effing <3 bleach. and silverthumb - your right about Zaraki XDD i wonder what yachiru would be like via D&D. high as hell dexterity?

Shunpo should be somekind of Teleportation effect, like maybe Dimension Door. And for each level aquired the range doubled or something.
Then there should be the possibilty to sacrifice "some" feet per day in exchange for a melee attack at the end of the Shunpo. Like the Telflammar Shadowlords Shadow Pounce ability, just a little different. Maybe with the possibility to catch you opponent flatfooted when used.

Well just an idea. The speed increase is still great, those Shinigamis move faster than a motherslapper.

BTW I have added a link to your Epic Spirit Shaman in my Spirit Shaman Handbook.

Cheers.

Well with Shyunpa it is such an amazing add of speed. There are three levels that require the mastery of the earlier to get. So this is an easy counterbalance so its not overwhelming. There is Kakedashi Shyunpa (Beginners Flashstep), Shyunpa (Flashstep), and finally Shyunshin (Goddess of Flashstep).

Bumping this, because.

I mean, I sure as freaking heck don't know (nor care) about how to make mechanics out of some things such as the Secondary and Tertiary abilities of the Cutters, but hell, yeah, does this series deserve to be statted.

Anybody has any idea of how to stat a Mod Soul-ish race?

Mod Souls, in my view, would result as standard creatures of a race, with a randomly generated special ability (as per the Astral Construct table, for example). Kon, for example, is perfectly normal, except that his legs act as if they had a +10 bonus to strength, affecting jump checks, unarmed attacks while kicking and a few other things accordingly. Aside from that, the only thing they'd have in common is the ability to see hollows, although whether that's a function of the Mod-Soul or the body is debatable.

Hi i'm new here, i register only for the purpose of post in this topic.
I'm italian so sorry if my english is bad sometimes.
Ii had saw the anime up to episode 72 so i finish all souyl society chapetr.
I like a lot of your ideas especially those of penzdragon
i have some thing to say:

Warning for some minor sopiler

1)I don't think is right to allow to character to select only one tree of specialization becaouse some of the character of the anime can use more of one bakuya can use flash step and demon magic, Yourichi is good at flash step, hand to hand and even a little to demon magic

2)I don't like the idea of a bankay only as a summon spell if someone see ichigo or bakuya bankay can understend me.

3)i'suggest to forgot the difference between different divison becouse each character enter in a different division becouse of its innate abilty for one of the specialization.

I dont'have anime d20 but i try to get it, but from wat i see in first page shoul be the best way to do shikai or bankai.

P.S.im try to put all the different idea o class that i have saw and then post that here

Sorry again for the english

i have pulled from severall other forums and compiled this:

Shinigami
Background Information
When one dies, their Spirit is released unto the world, and must find its’ way to a peaceful rest in the afterlife. Those who are charged with maintaining this progression from life to after life are known as the Shinigami, the Gods of Death.
While they were once humans in life, Shinigami stand apart from the normal souls of the afterlife through their possession of heightened spiritual powers and awareness. This awareness can be slight or overwhelming, but it is the very fact of having this potential that allows a spirit to undergo the training to become a Shinigami.
As well as being able to usher passing spirits, the Shinigami are expected to fight off demons and corrupted human spirits, known as Hollows, in order to maintain the flow of the natural death cycle. While training to become Shinigami a soul gains knowledge in using Demonic Magic in addition to physical combat training.
Most prominent of all the abilities granted to a Shinigami is that of their zanpakutō, a special spiritually enhanced sword which allows them to combat and purify lost souls, the Hollows. Each zanpakutō is unique and irreplaceable, and comes with it amazing powers and abilities that are unrivaled by any traditional magic.
Adventures: A Shinigami is a keeper of the peace. They traverse freely through their home in the afterlife, known as Soul Society, but are fiercely forbidden to be allowed to wander in the living world. A Shinigami who ventures out in the real world does so as an outcast or criminal, or is under orders.
Legitimate reasons for a Shinigami to be present in the living world vary, but generally are involved in maintaining spiritual peace. This includes training from the academy, dealing with Hollows or other demonic entities, or overseeing an area of high threat potential.
Characteristics: As in life, so too are the Shinigami vastly varying in characteristics and personalities in their death. Origin of spirits who find themselves in Soul Society come from all walks of the mortal coil, and as result, are wildly different in their mannerisms.
A Shinigami has no unifying personality trait, no unifying origin and no unifying look. Outside of a standardized uniform, a Shinigami can be of any ethnicity, time period, age, gender or type. Though the Shinigami are expected to keep the peace, their actual reasons for doing so are never entirely benevolent. Many Shinigami, including their highest ranking officers and commanders, are cruel and merciless people, while many others are gentle and kind caring souls.
Alignment: A Shinigami must be of any neutral or good alignment. Any Shinigami who drops to an evil alignment may no longer gain levels in Shinigami until they raise their alignment. Self or inflicted banishment from Soul Society does not immediately cause alignment loss, but purposely attacking a human or spirit without justification is an immediate jump to Evil alignment.
Religion: Shinigami tend to no longer be religious in their afterlife. However, it is not uncommon for some spirits to hold some personal significance to religions of their former lives. While Religion is not a barrier to becoming or staying a Shinigami, religions which may conflict with the tenants of the Shinigami life will most certainly prevent a soul from properly training to become a full Shinigami.
Background: The Shinigami as a group is an army, and as such, has strict regimental structure and command. Ruling over the Soul Society from Seireitei, a large castle complex which sits in the dead center of Soul Society, the bulk of Shinigami are part of the Gotei 13, an army divided into 13 divisions, broken up with a commanding Captain supported by a Lieutenant and a seat of 18 other officer positions. A Single Commander-General oversees the 13 divisions, and holds the position of 1st Division Commander.
Additionally, certain Shinigami may also find themselves in the employ of the Special Forces, also known as the Secret Mobile Unit or Covert Ops. The Special Forces have their own unique divisional structure, but it remains shrouded heavily in mystery to outsiders.
The Gotei 13 and the Secret Mobile Unit all follow the orders of the Central 46, a Chamber of Judiciary and Legislative members which oversee the day to day operations of Seireitei. Governing over the entirety of Soul Society is a royal family – however, the Royal family keeps itself free of the affairs of Seireitei, instead living in a separate dimensional space located in the dead center of Soul Society.
Races: Shinigami are mostly human. However, it is not unheard of for non-human humanoid species to become Shinigami.
Other Classes: Shinigami suffer no penalties for cross-classing, and may cross-class freely with any other class provided that they would normally qualify for gaining levels in another class.

Game Rule Information
Shinigami have the following game statistics.
Abilities: All spiritual entities have Reiatsu, which is their spiritual aura. The Reiatsu, in turn, is representative of their awareness of the spiritual world, and influences their strength in spiritual abilities and the power of their magical abilities, or Kidō. Reiatsu is tied directly to one’s Wisdom, and therefore having a higher Wisdom will greatly benefit a Shinigami’s abilities.
Zanjutsu, the method of combat using one’s zanpakutō, is a combat technique. This skill is tied directly to one’s strength. A Shinigami who wishes to have a high combat prowess would do well to have a high level of strength.
Alignment: Any Neutral or Good
Hit Die: d8

Entry Requirements
Base Attack Bonus: +2
Weapon Proficiency: Must be proficient with simple weapons.
Special: The candidate must either have died, and been sent to the spirit world, or have a high enough spiritual awareness to become aware of the spirit world (Wisdom of 18 or greater). Shinigami who have not yet died require the aid of a Shinigami (generally illegal and unknown by Soul Society) to begin their training.

Class Skills
The Shinigami’s class skills (and the key abilities for each skill) are Reiatsu (Wis), Kidō (Wis), and Zanjutsu (Str).

Skill Points at 1st Level: (6 + Int. Modifier) x 4
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 6 + Int. Modifier

Class Features
All the following are class features of the Shinigami.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Shinigami is proficient with simple weapons, but not armor. Because of the spiritual nature of Shinigami, their relative appearance is superficial at best. Their looks and appearances are based on personal preference, and any armor they wear generally has no actual substance. In spirit form, Shinigami are almost always in a standard uniform called a shihakushō, which consists of a white undershirt and a black kimono and hakama pants. Note that while armor check penalties do not apply to a Shinigami while in spirit form, any Shinigami which finds itself in a physical form for whatever reason suffers penalty for armor heavier than leather that applies to the skills Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Pick Pocket, and Tumble. Also, Swim checks suffer a -1 penalty for every 5 pounds of armor and equipment carried.

Reiatsu: Reiatsu is a tangible representation of a living or magical being’s spiritual power. Reiatsu represents the energy available to a Shinigami, and also provides a Shinigami with a passive set of bonuses as a side effect of their spiritual prowess. Each rank of Reiatsu grants the Shinigami 1 AC, but only when in spirit form. A Shinigami may apply his Wisdom bonus directly to damage rolls done by his zanpakutō a number of times per day equivalent to his current Reiatsu level, once per attack.

Kidō: Also known as Demon Magic, Kidō is the Shinigami’s equivalent to spell casting. Rather than summoning primal forces or working traditional magic, Kidō works by focusing a Shinigami’s Reiatsu through use of a verbal incantation. Not all Kidō have verbal components, but all Kidō are cast from the hand as the spell’s point of origin. Casting a Kidō is a full round action that provokes an attack of opportunity. Spells with verbal components can be cast as a move-equivalent action for twice the cost. A Shinigami gets a number of ‘free’ Kidō slots equivalent to their Kidō level per day. A Shinigami may attempt to cast additional Kidō at a cost of one wound point her casting.

Zanjutsu: Zanjutsu represents a Shinigami’s physical combat abilities. Their relative levels in Zanjutsu have an effect on their ability to learn and perform certain techniques, as well as granting an enhancement bonus to his zanpakutō equivalent to half Zanjutsu level (rounded down).

Zanpakutō: Starting from first level, a Shinigami gains access to his zanpakutō. The zanpakutō is considered a simple weapon which may be used either two-handed or one-handed. Both versions of the zanpakutō permanently have the Defending and Ghost Touch traits. A two-handed zanpakutō deals 2d4/x3 slashing damage, while a one-handed zanpakutō deals 1d10/18-20 x2 slashing damage. In rare occurrences, a Shinigami may gain two one-handed zanpakutō. Normal penalties and abilities which affect this off-hand weapon apply. Zanpakutō may not be further enchanted. Additionally, a zanpakutō does not get destroyed under most circumstances. A damaged zanpakutō will regenerate over time, preventing the Shinigami from ever truly losing their weapon. However, a zanpakutō which had had its blade completely destroyed, either vaporized or displaced in another plane of existence, can not regenerate this damage, rendering the blade useless, and the Shinigami defenseless.

Zanpakutō (Shikai): As a Shinigami progresses in his training, he becomes much stronger and gradually more spiritually aware. The first step in advancing a Shinigami’s powers to true Death God status is the unlocking of their zanpakutō’s ‘shikai’. While already inherently powerful, a zanpakutō in its original state is nothing more than a mere sword. Advancing to Shikai greatly increases the damage and power of the zanpakutō, as well as unlocking a special power which is generally unique to the user. A Shinigami earns the right to unlock their Shikai zanpakutō when they have learned the true name of their zanpakutō’s spirit. Each zanpakutō has an inhabiting spirit, which represents the will of the weapon itself. Calling out the name of the zanpakutō spirit transforms the weapon from its ‘sealed’ state to its Shikai state. ‘Sealing’ a sword is a move-equivalent action which provokes an attack of opportunity, while calling out a zanpakutō’s name to unleash its’ Shikai is a move-equivalent action which does not.

Zanpakutō (Bankai): Where the Shikai represents a step forward above a standard zanpakutō, the Bankai represents ten steps forward. Bankai vary in looks and abilities as radically as a Shikai does from a sealed zanpakutō. A Shinigami accesses their Bankai zanpakutō form when they have defeated their zanpakutō spirit in trial. Changing between Shikai and Bankai is a full round action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

Table – The Shinigami
Code:
Level B.A.B Fort Ref Will Special
1 +1 +0 +0 +2 Zanpakutō, Spirit Form, Combat Art, Spirit Sense
2 +2 +0 +1 +3 Combat Art
3 +3 +1 +1 +3 Combat Art, Bonus Feat
4 +4 +1 +2 +4 Combat Art
5 +5 +1 +2 +4 Zanpakutō (Shikai), Combat Art
6 +6 +2 +3 +5 Combat Art
7 +7 +2 +3 +5 Combat Art, Bonus Feat
8 +8 +2 +4 +6 Combat Art
9 +9 +3 +4 +6 Zanpakutō (Bankai), Combat Art
10 +10 +3 +5 +7 Combat Art
Spirit Form: A Shinigami is always in Spirit Form unless inhabiting a corporeal being. This can either be their living body (in the case of a non-dead Shinigami), a possessed being, or an artificial body (known as a gigai). A Shinigami may enter or exit any corporeal entity as a move-equivalent action, provoking an attack of opportunity. Attempting to possess an intelligent being requires a Will check on the part of the intended target, opposing a DC equivalent to half the Shinigami’s Reiatsu level. An inhabited being may attempt this check again once every other turn in an attempt to oust the controlling Shinigami. While in Spirit form, the Shinigami is treated as though he were ethereal, with the exception that he is unable to pass unhindered through objects.

Spirit Sense: A Shinigami is spiritually attuned, and as such, is able to sense spirits and ethereal beings. A Shinigami will automatically sense any being with a Reiatsu higher than 5, allows him to see and combat any such being regardless of lightning or the Shinigami’s own ability to see. Any being with Reiatsu may purposely suppress their Reiatsu to level 4 or below in order to escape Spirit Sense – but doing so causes any benefits from the Reiatsu skill to apply equivalent to the suppressed level. Spirit Sense allows a Shinigami to see beings that are in the ethereal plane.

Combat Arts
Rather than gaining individual additional skills and abilities as they progress, a Shinigami is able to hone his skills into specific abilities, creating a style of combat completely unique to his individual styles and choices.

Combat Arts that may be chosen are as follows:
Combat Arts

Shunpo
Requirements: Zanjutsu 20, Reiatsu 10
Re-trainable: No
Also known as Flash Step, Shunpo is a combat technique which allows the users to move nearly instantaneously from one location to another. While not entirely uncommon among Shinigami, true mastery of Shunpo is something that is incredibly hard to come by. Shunpo is a move-equivalent action that moves a Shinigami to any legal location within his normal movement range. Shunpo may be executed twice in succession, and using Shunpo to enter or exit melee combat does not provoke an attack of opportunity. A Shinigami may use Shunpo a number of times per day equivalent to half his Reiatsu level (rounded down).

Reiatsu Training
Requirements: Reiatsu 4
Re-trainable: Yes
With focus, dedication and training, a Shinigami may increase his Reiatsu, raising his spiritual power and awareness. The first time a Shinigami gains Reiatsu training, he gains a +2 bonus to his Reiatsu skill. Further Reiatsu Training confers only an additional +1 bonus.

Reiatsu Charge
Requirements: Reiatsu 15
Re-trainable: No
As a move-equivalent action (provoking an attack of opportunity) a Shinigami may focus his Reiatsu and gather additional spiritual energy from his surroundings. Reiatsu charge doubles the Shinigami’s effective Reiatsu level, decaying at a rate of 1 point of Reiatsu per round until it stabilizes to his original Reiatsu level. Reiatsu Charge may not be used while under the effect of a Reiatsu Charge, and may only be used a number of times per day equivalent to the Shinigami’s levels in Shinigami. While active, the Shinigami creates a Reiatsu aura which generates light in a 30-foot radius.

Deadly Reiatsu
Requirements: Reiatsu 25
Re-trainable: No
A focusing of a Shinigami’s Reiatsu within a 50-foot radius, with the intent to disable or kill enemies, Deadly Reiatsu may be attempted any number of times per day, but the Shinigami is unable to attack or use abilities while maintaining the effect. Enemies caught inside the area of effect must make a Will save opposing the Shinigami’s level of Reiatsu. A natural 20 will negate the effect of Deadly Reiatsu. Depending on the degree of failure, Deadly Reiatsu has the following effects:
• 5 or less: Effected character loses 10 speed.
• 6-10: Effected character loses half their speed.
• 11-15: Effected character flees in terror at half speed.
• 16-20: Effected character is disabled and may not act.
• 21+: Effected character is disabled, taking d4 damage for each they remain under the effect of Deadly Reiatsu.
Deadly Reiatsu is canceled when the Shinigami willing chooses so, does any action other than moving, talking or simple interaction, or is dealt damage. Any character under the effect of Deadly Reiatsu may make another attempt to break free from Deadly Reiatsu once per turn.

Unarmed Combat
Requirements: Zanjutsu 1, Reiatsu 5
Re-trainable: Yes
The Secret Mobile Unit has the unique distinction in that it is a group of Shinigami who excel at unarmed and melee combat as opposed to their zanpakutō. Training in the Unarmed Combat art grants the Shinigami the Weapon Proficiency (Unarmed) feat, and allows the Shinigami to use their zanpakutō’s ghost touch ability while fighting unarmed. Additional ranks in Unarmed Combat grant a +1 bonus to all attack rolls made while fighting unarmed.

Unarmed Expert
Requirements: Unarmed Combat 3
Re-trainable: No
Unarmed Expert grants the Shinigami a +2 bonus to all attack rolls made while fighting unarmed. Additionally, the Shinigami gains his zanpakutō’s Defender trait Zanjutsu bonus while fighting unarmed.

Shunko
Requirements: Unarmed Expert, Reiatsu 20
Re-trainable: No
Shunko, also known as the Flash Release, is a combination Reiatsu and melee attack, which involves focusing one’s spiritual energy in such a way that it greatly enhances one’s fighting ability. Shunko can be maintained indefinitely, and is activated/deactivated as a move-equivalent action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. While under the effects of Shunko, the Shinigami’s unarmed attack is upgraded to doing 2d8 damage, and gains bonus damage equivalent to his Wisdom bonus. A Shinigami using Shunko may not use his zanpakutō or Kidō abilities.

Zanjutsu Training
Requirements: Zanjutsu 4
Re-trainable: Yes
A Shinigami can choose to dedicate himself to training his sword arts, and as a result, gains unparalleled skill in using his zanpakutō. Zanjutsu Training grants a +2 bonus to a Shinigami’s Zanjutsu skill and each subsequent Zanjutsu Training learned increases this bonus by an additional +1.

Zanjutsu Mastery
Requirements: Zanjutsu Training 5
Re-Trainable: No
Zanjutsu Mastery grants the Shinigami +2 to all attack rolls made while using their zanpakutō, in any form.

Reiatsu Empowered
Requirements: Zanjutsu Mastery, Reiatsu 25
Re-Trainable: No
Masters of Zanjutsu have unparalleled ability to the point that specialization in their Reiatsu or Kidō skills are unlikely if not impossible. Rather than letting their tremendous spiritual power go to waste, a Shinigami may instead learn to give their weapons the Reiatsu Empowered feat. Reiatsu Empowered permanently grants the Shinigami’s zanpakutō a damage bonus equivalent to their Wisdom bonus. Additional, once per day the Shinigami may attempt to make an Empowered Strike. If the strike is successful, the Shinigami deals damage equivalent to their zanpakutō’s damage plus their Reiatsu level minus the target’s AC or Reiatsu level, whichever is highest.

Kidō Training
Requirements: Kidō 3
Re-trainable: Yes
Kidō is a delicate art, and careful training can turn these spells into ones of unparalleled power. Kidō Training grants a +2 bonus to a Shinigami’s Kidō skill. Additional Kidō Training confers a +1 bonus.

Kidō Specialist
Requirements: Kidō Training 4, Reiatsu 15
Re-Trainable: No
A Kidō specialist gets an additional number of Kidō slots equivalent to half their Reiatsu level (rounded down).

Kidō Mastery
Requirements: Kidō Specialist, Kidō 30
Re-Trainable: No
Kidō Mastery removes the penalty of wound damage associated with casting additional Kidō spells, effectively giving a Shinigami an unlimited number of Kidō casts.

Spirit Training
Requirements: Wisdom 15
Re-Trainable: Yes
Each rank of Spirit Training increases the Shinigami’s wisdom by 1.

Combat Training
Requirements: Strength 15
Re-Trainable: Yes
Each rank of Combat Training increases the Shinigami’s strength by 1.

Kidō – Demonic Magic
Shinigami work their ‘magic’ by chanting an incantation or focusing their Reiatsu, and channeling it to produce an intended effect. Kidō with verbal components are always more powerful when the full incantation is spoken, but casting a verbal Kidō is a full round action that provokes an attack of opportunity. As a result, many Shinigami use the non-verbal alternative to their Kidō. A non-verbal Kidō costs twice the number of ‘spell’ slots of their verbal counterparts, but gain the advantage of being a move-equivalentaction which does not provoke an attack of opportunity. The spell level of a Shinigami’s Kidō is equivalent to their Kidō skill level.
Kidō Spells

Binding Spells
Restrain
Kidō level: 1
Verbal: None
Restrain forces the target’s arms behind their back, binding them in place and preventing them from using their hands/arms. A successful Will saving throw against the spell’s level negates the effect.

Crawling Rope
Kidō level: 3
Verbal: None
A magical energy rope which attempts to bind the target’s arms, preventing the use of their arms and hands. The effect is similar to Restrain except it can be resisted with a Reflex Save against the spell’s level. While under the effects of Crawling Rope, the effected can attempt a Strength Check against the spell’s level to break the effect.

Geiki
Kidō level: 10
Verbal: Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat!
The Shinigami unleashes a blast of red energy which engulfs the target, paralyzing them for d6 turns, preventing any action.

Summoning of the Tracking Sparrows
Kidō level: 8
Verbal: Heart of the south, eye of the north, finger of the west, foot of the east, arrive with the wind and depart with the rain.
This is a tracking Kidō which allows a Shinigami to track any spirit, ethereal or being with a Reiatsu level of 1 or higher. The range is effectively unlimited, but limited to only one plane of existence at a time.

Six Rods Prison of Light
Kidō level: 15
Verbal: Carriage of thunder. Bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six
Target is retrained by six rods of holy energy which encase the target’s midsection. This holds the target in place, preventing any physical movement, but does not prevent spell casting or attacking or defending.

Quintet of 1 Kan Iron Pillars

I would suggest getting BESM D20. It's built directly for playng anime characters, and so far i've been able to replicate most of the characters from Bleach with it (only got it a week ago)

That would be fine, if it weren't for the fact the BESM d20 is so horrifically unbalanced as to render certain options entirely unplayable.

I made a shinigami class a while back, trying to use almost exclusivly core rules+Spell Compendium. It's a PRC

I thinks it's pretty well writtin, in theroy you could write spells for all the different demonic magics they use, but i'm pretty sure the spell compendium+PHB got most of the way there.

Shinigami:

Hit Die: d8

Requirements:

To qualify to become a shinigami a character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Race: Any.

Alignment: Any lawful.

Base attack bonus: +7.

Feats: Weapon focus (Katana), weapon Specialization Katana

Special: in order to join the shinigami, a character must sacrifice items, worth a total of at least 8000 gp, and train for 1 week with a Shinigami in order to bring out their zanpaku-to.

Class Skills:

A shinigami’s class skills are,

Jump, Climb, Spot, Listen, Profession, Craft (weapon), sense motive, bluff, Intimidate, Concentration, Spellcraft, knowledge (the planes, arcana), and swim.

Skill points at each level: 4 + intelligence modifier.

Level Base attack Fort save Ref save Will save Special
1st +1 +2 +0 +2 Zanpaku-to, weapon focus greater (katana)
2nd +2 +3 +0 +3 Shikai 1/day
3rd +3 +3 +1 +3 Flash step 1/day
4th +4 +4 +1 +4 Shikai 2/day
5th +5 +4 +1 +4 Flash step 2/day greater weapon specialization
6th +6/+1 +5 +2 +5 Bankai 1/day, shikai 3/day

Class Features:

All of the class features available to the shinigami prestige class

Weapon and armor proficiency: Shinigami’s gain no proficiency with any weapon or armors.

Weapon Focus, greater: At 1st level a shinigami gains the weapon focus, greater (Katana) feat even if they don’t meet the requirements.

Weapon Specialization, Greater: At 5th level a shinigami gains the weapon Specialization, greater feat, even if they don’t meet the requirements.

Spells: beginning at 1st level a shinigami gains the ability to a number of Kido (arcane spells). To cast kido a shinigami must have a Charisma score of 10 + the spell’s level. Shinigami bonus spells are based on Charisma and saving throw DC’s are equal to 10 + Spell level + Charisma bonus. A shinigami knows all spells from the Kido spell list, and has a caster level equal to their shinigami class level.

Level 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
1st 0
2nd 1
3rd 2 0
4th 3 1
5th 3 2 0
6th 3 3 1
7th 3 3 2 0
8th 3 3 3 1
9th 3 3 3 2
10th 3 3 3 3

Zanpaku-to: A zanpaku-to is the direct reflection of the power of its wielder, a shinigami's spiritual pressure given physical form. While they mostly look like any other katana an old-time samurai might carry around, zanpaku-to are far from normal. The foremost difference is the ability of zanpaku-to to harm shinigami. Since shinigami are really a kind of ghost, normal blades and weapons can't touch them. In fact, "zanpaku-to" literally means "soul cutting sword”, at first level of the shinigami prestige class you receive a +1 ghost touch katana as a result of your initial training and sacrifice. As one trains with their Zanpaku-to they, and their sword increase in power, by making a sacrifice of a certain value (as given in the table below) the Zanpaku-to’s power can be slowly drawn out. A zanpaku-to’s 3 additional forms all have powers that are similar to each other, as such they must all have a matching theme to them, such as an energy type, or school of magic (subject to DM approval).

Weapon bonus Sacrifice (gp) Required shinigami level
+3 18,000 2
+4 32,000 3
+5 50,000 4
+6* 72,000 5
+7* 98,000 6
+8* 128,000 7
+9* 162,000 8
+10* 200,000 9

*A weapon cannot actually have a bonus greater then +5. Use these lines to determine a price when special abilities are added in. Example: A Shinigami who wishes to transform his +4 Ghost touch Zanpaku-to into a +4 ghost touch speed weapon would be required to pay 78,000 to pay for the +3 weapon enhancement

Shikai: The second form is called "Shikai", or "first release". The key to Shikai is learning the zanpaku-to's name. Discovering it is not the easiest thing in the world; some Shinigami never do manage it. Shinigami who achieve Shikai gain a whole new level of power. Shikai is easily triggered by an incantation unique to each sword, a shikai zanpaku-to changes immensely, often becoming a weapon far removed from a sword. Also, shikai zanpaku-to usually have special powers a shinigami can use, such as poisons, illusions or power blasts. A shikai’s ability may be chosen as any 5th level, or lower spell (this spell must be chosen when you first use Shikai, and may not change). Releasing a shikai is a supernatural ability that requires a standard action, you may not release a shikai if you are in some way prohibited from speaking (such as in a silenced area) unless you have achieved Bankai. Shikai bypasses spell resistance and on spells which allow saves, the Shikai has a save DC of 15 + Charisma modifier. You may not choose a spell that has material components of value greater then 1gp, or an experience loss. A shikai’s caster level is equal to your Character level.

Bankai: Bankai is the third form. Bankai means "all release". Only powerful shinigami can acquire bankai. Increasing the zanpaku-to's power by as much as a factor of ten, it takes intense training to learn Triggering a zanpaku-to's bankai needs only a one-word incantation: Bankai. Releasing a Bankai is a supernatural ability, which requires a full-round action. A bankai’s ability may be any spell of 7th level or lower (this spell must be chosen when you first use Bankai, and may not change) bypasses spell resistance and has a spell save DC of 17 + Charisma modifier. You may not choose a spell that has material Components of value greater then 1gp, or an experience loss. A bankai’s caster level is equal to your Character level.

True Form: This is a bankai’s ultimate power, the limit of a Zanpaku-to’s abilities, and should only be used in the most dire of circumstances, many who have achieved bankai have failed to master their bankai’s true form. Once per day When a shinigami activates their bankai, the may choose to reveal its true form instead. Unveiling a bankai’s true form is a supernatural ability that requires a full-round action and may duplicate and 9th level or lower spell (this spell must be chosen when you first reveal true form, and may not change.) You may not choose a spell that has material components of value greater then 1gp, or an experience loss. This spell effect bypasses spell resistance and has a spell save DC of 19 + Charisma modifier. True form’s caster level is equal to your character level.

Flash Step: At 3rd level a shinigami learns to propel themselves at extremely high speeds for a short period of time. A Shinigami may use flash step as a move action to “step” up to 20 feet per shinigami class level as the spell Dimension door. A shinigami may not use flash step in medium or heavy armor.

Chant-less kido: at 9th level a shinigami learns how to cast kido without speaking the full incantation; however this greatly reduces the effectiveness of the kido. A shinigami may cast any kido they know as a swift action, however all numerical effects including duration are halved, and the spell save DC is reduced by 5.

Code of the shinigami: if a shinigami changes alignment, to any non-lawful alignment for any reason, they are shunned from the order and may not gain further levels as a shinigami, unless they are affected by an Atonement spell.

I think that the Shinigami is a class not a prestiege class. It might be a template but that's questionable.

I think that the Shinigami is a class not a prestiege class. It might be a template but that's questionable.

Um... why? It's made quite clear throughout the series that while it does possess a number of elements that are inherant to all Shinigami (such as the Zanpukto), it is equally clear that a large proportion of their power level comes from a highly specified form of training. Base classes are for when you enter from day 1 of your training, not like Shinigami where they pick you out on the strength of your already developed abilities and then train you in their fighting style. That is virtually the definition of a Prestige Class. In any case, we should wait for 4th Ed to come out and see what can be done with the system then. It may turn out the perfectly viable Shinigami can be made with judicious combinations of 4th Ed Fighter & Mage (or Wizard/sorcerer or what ever else magic user we get). Heck, you can make a fairly decent Shinigami now just using a Psychic Warrior.

There's a pretty cool RPG at amalgam gamers (http://www.amalgamrpg.com/forum/index.php?) for Bleach. I've been a member for a while...almost halfway to Bankai myself. Anyways its not *quite* d20, but the system was definately inspired by it (feats, prestige classes, etc...).

Talking about what might be doable in 4e, this Swordmage thing sounds quite interesting for representing Shinigami. It's described as a 'warrior who uses magic to fight better'. Can you say 'Kidou'?

Have you guys seen this site here? He already has the system complete except for the kido spell. Also, someone else posted up a bunch of the characters from the show using this system.
They say that some of the stuff you see on the show is just for visualization if it were transfrered to this system which, to me personally, I think is really lame.

OK, I didn't read all you said (because it's too much) so first of all organize:
Setting:

The planes of existence in the Bleach universe broadly correspond to the life and afterlife of human belief systems. The living humans of Bleach reside in a world resembling present-day Japan; buried souls live in a kind of Heaven called Soul Society; evil souls are sent to Hell. Once in Soul Society, a spirit is able to live longer than humans in the living world, with many aging into the thousands of years. Once a spirit dies in Soul Society, its soul is sent back to the living world and reborn as a new human. This provides the two worlds with balance.

Human world: The human world of Bleach is modern Japan, specifically, a fictional area of Western Tokyo called Karakura Town. In this world, Ichigo attends school and fights hollows. Places of note are the high school, the Urahara Shop, the river where Ichigo's mother was killed, the cemetery, Karakura Hospital, and Ichigo and Orihime's homes.
Soul Society: Soul Society consists of an expansive walled city Seireitei (Court of Pure Souls), in the center and four regions, each with 80 districts, outside of it. The districts outside of the Seireitei are known as the Rukongai ( Town of Wandering Spirits) and are the place where non-shinigami and commoners live. The district number of the Rukongai (ranging from 1 to 80) also describes its conditions. District 1, the closest to Seireitei, is peaceful and orderly, while the most distant District 80 is filled with criminals and has the poorest living conditions. A king resides in another realm within Soul Society.

Hueco Mundo: Hueco Mundo is the desert-like area between the human world and Soul Society. Literally meaning "hollow world" (the word hueco can also mean "empty"), it is where hollows reside when not hunting in the human world, where they are undetectable. Entrances to Hueco Mundo are created by ripping the dimensional fabric between the two worlds.

Hell: Hell is the destination of those who committed unforgivably evil acts during their lives in the human world. When a hollow whose mortal soul is too wicked to enter Soul Society is slain by a zanpakutō, the gates of hell (giant doors held by skeletons) appear and begin to open. A giant, laughing spiritual being with a blade spears the wicked spirit and drags it down into hell.

Bleach characters move from world to world by several means. Shinigami open passages between worlds by means of their zanpakutō. Butterflies created during soul burial, called hell butterflies, make these routes safe. Human souls usually cross between planes only through birth into the human world or soul burial by shinigami. Living humans can also use special portals to move between worlds, but this is dangerous. While hollows are portrayed as able to move between planes at will by opening rifts in space, they usually remain in Hueco Mundo due to the risk of discovery in Soul Society or the human world. Encounters between characters crossing realms are a driving plot force in Bleach.

Races: (more like character types)

Humans: The humans of Bleach are much like the residents of modern Japan, and most cannot see or sense disembodied spirits in any way. Spirits can, however, inhabit artificial human bodies called gigai which are visible to ordinary humans. One in 50,000 humans is a medium with some awareness of nearby spirits, but only a third of these are able to see them clearly, and only the strongest of mediums are able to speak with or touch spirits. Certain unique humans naturally have both the power to sense and the strength to fight with spirits. Ordinary humans can gain the ability to interact with spirits by spending time around a large source of spirit energy.

Shinigami: Shinigami (Soul Reapers in the official English editions, Death Gods in most subtitled versions) are the psychopomps of Bleach. They are souls with inner spiritual power, recruited from the ranks of the residents and nobility of Soul Society. Like all spirits, they cannot be detected by normal humans. Shinigami use their zanpakutō, supernatural swords that are the manifestation of their owners' power, to perform soul burials on pluses. Shinigami also use zanpakutō and magic known as kidō to fight their archrivals, the hollows. A group of shinigami known as the vizard have also obtained hollow powers through illegal means, gaining removable masks and access to certain hollow abilities.

Quincy: The Quincy are a clan of spiritually aware humans who once fought against the hollows, using weapons composed of spiritual energy to slay them. As opposed to shinigami, Quincy absorb and channel energy from their surroundings to fight. Unlike the shinigami method of killing hollows which allows the hollow to enter Soul Society, the Quincy technique simply destroys the hollow's soul entirely. This method has the propensity to shatter the balance of the universe, because when souls are destroyed, the number of souls entering and leaving Soul Society cannot remain equal. This issue prompted the shinigami to conduct a campaign to exterminate the Quincy about 200 years before the main storyline. At least two Quincy still remain.

Vizard:The vizard are the antithesis to the arrancar; they are shinigami who have obtained hollow powers and whose shinigami powers remain dominant (although they do have to undergo a process and maintain their dominance over their hollow), while the arrancar are hollows that have obtained shinigami powers and whose hollow powers remain dominant. Having begun as shinigami, the vizard appear entirely human. Unlike the arrancar, they do not have holes or partial masks (common traits of transformed hollows) anywhere on their body, though they can produce masks on demand, and they carry zanpakutō like normal shinigami. When using their hollow powers, a vizard's appearance does not change except for the mask on their face and the color of their eyes, with the whites of their eyes turning black and the irises gold. This process of donning one's hollow mask is referred to as "Hollowification".

The existence of shinigami/hollow hybrids was first hinted fairly early in the manga. When Ichigo Kurosaki was training with Kisuke Urahara, Urahara severed Ichigo's Chain of Fate in order to force him to regain his lost shinigami power. Ichigo was able to recover his shinigami powers when his body began the process of turning into a hollow. Ichigo's transformation happened out of sequence, his mask forming first instead of his body breaking apart and reforming, a sign of his resistance. When he emerged as a shinigami, he was also wearing a hollow's mask, which he broke off. After he arrived in Soul Society, the hollow mask reappeared on him several occasions, even though he repeatedly discarded it. In the fight against Byakuya Kuchiki, Ichigo's hollow form resurfaced and his mask started to reform around his face. However, before he completely transformed, Ichigo was able to regain control and tear off the mask once again. Whether this process is uniform for all vizard or merely unique to Ichigo is unclear, though the later symptoms are hinted at being common.

Ichigo later discovers that there are other shinigami who have acquired hollow powers besides himself. Shinji Hirako, a boy carrying a zanpakutō and a hollow mask, reveals that these renegade shinigami call themselves the vizard. Shinji tries to convince Ichigo to join their group, saying that only he can teach Ichigo how to control his "hollow within" and keep it from taking over and destroying everything Ichigo cares about. Ichigo initially refuses Shinji's offer, but relents after realizing he can't control his inner hollow on his own. Ichigo insists that he's merely using them to learn how to control his inner hollow.

It is unclear what the motives of the vizard are. It is known, however, that vizard are considered criminals by Soul Society for committing the ultimate taboo of acquiring hollow powers. Hollows would also never accept a vizard, due to their former status as shinigami. It is because of this that it can be presumed that the only side the vizard are on is their own. Regardless, they seem to be valuable allies-to-be in the battle against Sōsuke Aizen's army of arrancar, as Kisuke Urahara mentioned.

Unlike in Soul Society, where the rank is given accordingly to shinigami within a division, or in Hueco Mundo, where a number is assigned to each arrancar reflecting their strength, the vizard have not yet revealed a structure based on hierarchy.

Arrancar:An arrancar is a hollow that has removed its mask and gained shinigami powers. The name arrancar is a Spanish verb meaning "to remove" or "to rip off," a reference to an arrancar's removal of its hollow mask. In the manga, it is written as arankaru (lit. rip mask) but has no native Japanese pronunciation, instead using the katakana for arankaru.

Few hollows have the potential to remove their masks normally, and even if they manage it the change is not significant. Sōsuke Aizen is able to artificially create arrancar with the Orb of Distortion, which also unlocks much more of their potential than a natural transformation would. The process of turning a hollow into an arrancar is called shinigamification ( shinigami-ka).

Arrancar and ordinary hollows differ in two ways: the location of their holes and the near-total disappearance of their masks. When hollows become arrancar, the chances of them retaining a humanoid form increase with their intelligence; only vasto lorde-class arrancar will definitely assume a humanoid form. If powerful enough, an arrancar can seal his or her excess power into the form of a zanpakutō. Unlike with shinigami, this zanpakutō is by no means sentient. It is simply the hollow's true form sealed into a sword. Therefore, an arrancar's release of their zanpakutō is merely a temporary restoration of their former selves. An arrancar release is called resurrección . Arrancar do not have a known second release.

Those arrancar under Aizen's command also have a standard theme for their clothing. Their uniforms consist of a white jacket, black sash, white hakama, and black socks with white sandals; in essence, the uniforms are basically inverted shinigami uniforms.

I'm confused on how one would get ranks on Zanjutsu, Reiatsu, Shunpo, and/or Kidō. If you could tell me, thanks in advance.

And same 4 bankai...

ok so i've come up with a very simple and accurate answer.

you ask it.

in a recent eppisode of bleach, 142 or 143 i think, Hitsugaya and his team spent time talking with their swords. this entaled a deep meditative state (which was easier for some then others, like Ikkaku) shinigami accademy most likely teaches how to communicate with your zanpakuto so unless you're an extremely low charisma it shouldn't be a problem.

as for bankai, ichigo cheated. i suppose a character could try to do it that way, failure would of course result in death... again. i'm too tired to try and come up with stats for that. but shikai and bankai just come as part of communing qith your zanpakuto. which is why kenpachi zaraki is stuck in sealed form. i giggle a little when i considder the potential of him learnng his zanppakuto's name.

well i'm going to bed now, hope that helps

For the three day bankai, you have to make three will and fortitude checks, each starting at dc20 and going up one per day. If you fail a will save, you must spend another day. If you fail a fortitude save, you take 1d6 con and str damage from the strain on your body and become fatigued.

Kenpachi's zanpakutō has no known name, even to its owner. Kenpachi is the only captain of the Gotei 13 who doesn't know the name of his sword, nor can he use his bankai as a result. Despite not knowing its name, it is constantly released.[4] The sword's appearance is a reflection of Kenpachi's own practice of weakening himself to fight: it is a seemingly worn-down and dull blade with a guard that extends inward from its center.

Himitsu Munesanzun in his sealed form has a cobalt colored cloth covering over a black colored wood hilt which is almost 1 and a half times longer then a standard katana. The blade is colored charcoal and is slitly shorter then an standard katana. The Guard is simply two decorated hearts on either side of the blade which are colored silver.

In Shikai the blade grows longer and starts to glow a cyan-white like color. The guard-hearts tip downward and release "shadows" which engulf the blade (the light of the blade is not visible unless the blade is in movement, such as a swing) the hilts colors reverse (altho the colbalt color darkens). A Claw with similer colors to the hilt and shadows with a lesser intensity then the blades (which allows someone to view the claw) manifests onto Lance's left arm which extends all the way to the elbow. Also Lance's shadow starts to warp.
To call Himitsu Munesanzun Lance must chant this:
"Crawl out from the shadows, and seduce your prey, Himitsu Munesanzun!!!"

Even thou the aperense of the blade may show otherwise, Himitsu Munesanzun Shikai is a direct attack type.

I still haven't thought much about his Bankai's name or abilities, however there will be collums of floating shadows the size of Giant size creatures ;)

This is a continuation of my last post.

The command to release the Shikai of Hangenzon Tenma is,
"Rise and walk again, Hangenzon Tenma!"
The Bankai I made is quite unique if I do say so myself because it gains massive amounts power in exchange that it is unbelieveably unstable and dangerous to activate. One problem left is I still am figuring out what it's going to look like.

I tried to fit Hollows into D&D once - I said they were ghost-like entities created by the death of one of the lost (Magic of Incarnum), or when a creature transforms into a lost as it dies. Unlike ghosts, they exist partially on the Plane of Shadow instead of the Ethereal Plane.

I mean, the lost are pretty similar to Hollows anyway...
What's a "lost"?

IMAGE(http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/moi_gallery/91223.jpg)
When a creature who is experiencing powerful negative emotions comes into contact with a random wisp of incarnum (soul energy) embodying that emotion, it bonds to them, causing that emotion to take over completely, giving them strange abilities and often reducing them to animal intelligence.

The way Matsurashi draws out his Bankai is stabbing himself in the stomach, shout Bankai, then pulling it back out using his blood as a requirement (mind you I already thought of this before you said anything, but thanks for the suggestion), but that is not the risky part. What makes it so risky is the release of such a massive amount of riatsu could very well kill Matsurashi. If he servives, it translates into almost certain death to his opponent, if the Spirit in his Zanpakuto, Hangenzon Tenma, doesn't decide to take control of his owner
Show
like Ichigo's hollow does when he's fighting Byakuya and other fights

to call on Himitsu Munesanzun bankai, lance must cut his left hand (the one with the claw), wipe the blood over his right arm. then he shouts BANKAI!!!
his right arm starts breaking out with boils, which then explode. Out of the boils come shadows which ingulf lances arm. The arm becomes a claw similer to the one gained in Shikai. As for the claw on the left arm, it extends up to the shoulder. The blade itself becomes a windmill shaped object with seven blades around the center. This object floats behind the back of lance. The windmill is sealed on the back by shadows which envelope it.
Then Lance reveals his Bankais name, "Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun".

In combat Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun has 3 fighting styles, Reckless Offensive, Sealing Pillar Prison, and Windmill Seal Break. Ill explain the different fighting styles in a future post.:D

Lol, nice try though.

Here's a guy I've been using in several free form games on rpol.net....

Name: Kitae
Rank: Second seat of squad 6 (future timeline)
Zanpakuto: Hyuukiba (Ice fang)

Hyuukiba takes the form of a bone white tiger with cold blue strips. Ice vapors trail from it's feet and tails, while it's fangs appear to be carved from blue ice.
The unsealed form is that of a kusari-gama with the handle covered in fangs, with a white blade and blue stripes going across it.
The shikai form is similar to the unsealed form, however with each strike another kusari-gama forms with the chain attached to Kitae's belt. He can use each one as a long range weapon as well, withthe chains reahing a disatnce of up to 10 miles.
When the bankai form is activated, the kusari-gama wrap together and dig into the ground. The ground within 2 miles turns completly to ice, forming a dome within that 2 mile radius. Kitae can control the terrain by will, each spirit particle in the air becoming coated with his own. (think gaara controlling his sand).
He also has a darker form, which arises when Hyuukiba see's himself in danger of perishing. Kitae's hair turns pale blue, his eyes become white holes, and blue stripes form along his body (no, no cat tail or ears. Thats where I draw the line). He weapons become coated in a black ichor, and the air around him becomes so cold that snow falls, although it too is also coated in black ichor. The ichor is a powerfull neuro toxin that targets an opponents perception of the world, eventually causing him to go comatose.

Some people have pointed out the oddity of Soul Society, in that it seems exclusively Asian. I suggest the following...

Soul Society is not Heaven, or at least, not the only possible Heaven. Most souls move on to some other place the shinigami know nothing of, but certain places have a high concentration of spiritual energy - these can be as small as a local "fairy hill", or as large as an entire country - one of these spiritual fields covers much of Japan. Each of these has either its own associated Soul Society, or is attached to some distant part of Soul Society, and most souls within move on to Soul Society instead of the normal afterlife.

Other groups similar to the shinigami exist throughout the world, but could not be recognised as such - their appearance is based on the folkore of the area. For instance, no western "shinigami" would have a katana as the sealed form of his zanpakuto (unless he was an otaku :P). A group of Italian shinigami might resemble Roman centurions. Ichigo subcpnsciously based his shinigami uniform on Rukia's - if he had encountered an Italian shinigami, his outfit would look quite different.

Organization: Solitary (unique) or squad (Kenpachi, Yachiru Kusajishi (lieutenant), Ikkaku Madarame, and Yumichika Ayasegawa)
CR: 25
Treasure: Zanpakuto (unnamed)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Standing 6’7”, Kenpachi has a wild and aggressive appearance, fitting with his personality. He wears his captain's jacket without sleeves, and with a more ragged look to it. He styles his hair into spikes with bells at the tips and wears a special eye patch on his right eye created by the 12th Division to absorb the bulk of his power. He has a huge scar on the left side of his face. In his hands he holds a long, beaten-up, dented blade.

At some point during his travels outside of District #80, he found a small girl and named her Yachiru, in remembrance of the only person he ever admired, after she showed no fear of his sword. Yachiru came from area #79, Kusajishi, where her parents were murdered. The two events were apparently quite close. On that day, he also took on a name: Kenpachi, the title bestowed upon the strongest swordsman, the one who has killed the most. The two are close and have a father-daughter-like relationship.
Also, at some point (before he became a captain), he fought and defeated Ikkaku Madarame; for this reason, Ikkaku pledged to serve under Kenpachi from there on out (Ikkaku doesn't actually get the chance to do so until he joins the 11th Division), and wishes for only one thing, to die under Zaraki's command.
After some time had passed, Kenpachi found his way to Seireitei. He defeated and killed the previous captain of the 11th Division (whose identity is currently unknown) and gained his seat in the Gotei 13 in this manner.

Combat:Kenpachi simply uses his massive strength to overwhelm his foes in battle. He also seems highly resistant to physical pain, in which he can suffer massive wounds and blood loss, but can continue to fight.

Eye patch and Bells: Kenpachi’s full power is sealed within these seemingly simple-looking items. As a free action, he can remove 1 bell or his eye patch.
The eye patch contains his spiritual powers; thus when he removes it he gains a +12 bonus to Cha.
For each Bell he takes off, Kenpachi gains a +1 bonus to Str and Con scores. He has a total of 11 Bells. As a full-round action Kenpachi can take off all his Bells.

Spiritual Blast (Su): Kenpachi can release, as a full-round action, a blast of spiritual energy, which takes the form of a yellow skull. It is 15 ft wide and 500 ft. long. It deals 11d12 points of damage to any creature in range. Reflex save DC 32 halves (Cha-based). Target must also succeed a Fortitude save DC 32 (Cha-based) or be knocked prone for 1d6 + 2 rounds. Kenpachi can use this ability every 1d4 rounds.

Spiritual Pressure (Su): Those within 100 ft. of Kenpachi must succeed a Fortitude save DC 32 or fall helpless to the ground for as long as they are within range. Kenpachi can suppress or activate this effect as a free action. Other Squad Captains are immune. DC is Cha-based.

Possession:

Zanpakuto: Kenpachi's zanpakutō is in a permanently released state, with the hilt of a shinai and a long, beaten-up, dented blade. It is apparently unique in the fact that it is released despite its owner not knowing its name, purely due to his inability to restrain his massive spiritual power. However, despite being in the form of a shikai, its power is apparently inaccessible to Kenpachi due to him not knowing the sword's name. It function’s as a +7 keen, mighty cleaving, wounding, mighty cleaving, huge katana .
While using this sword, Kenpachi gains the Improved Sunder feat as a bonus feat. He also ignores the hardness of an object when attacking it.

Ichigo subconsciously based his shinigami uniform on Rukia's - if he had encountered an Italian shinigami, his outfit would look quite different.

That is exactly what I was thinking, except that the names of things that Shinigami use (i.e. zanpakuto, kido, shunpo, even Shinigami, and etc.) would be named culturaly different. I don't know what it would be for other Soul Societies, but I'm sure you get the point.
Show
You know how their's a King over Soul Society in Ichigo's area, if we were to use this idea, there would be other kings of the other Soul Societies, which dwell in their own areas. Those areas in which would most likely be the true Heaven that Aizen was talking about.

*Looks around*

Any ideas? As an Irishman I have a few ideas about possible Celtic shinigami (Ireland has a reputation for being "spiritually active", after all). The default form of a zanpakuto would likely be a greatsword. I can imagine the Claíomh Solais ("Sword of Light") playing a similar role to that big halberd thingy :P

P.S. Cúchulainn was a shinigami! Read this and tell me it isn't shikai (or bankai for that matter)

I had an idea for a shinigami character, but I have't picked a name...

He has two zanpakuto, one of which belongs to his deceased brother, though he does not use it unless fighting a powerful opponent.

The true form of his own zanpakuto, Hihitono ("Lord of Flames"), is a viper snake made of magma. Its sealed form is unusually curved, and has red and black weaving on the hilt. He activates shikai by holding the sword horizontally with both hands and shouting "Burst, Hihitono!", causing it to melt onto his hands and become a pair of clawed gauntlets. In this form, he has various fire-based attacks.

When the odds are against him (and only after he has used shikai), he draws his brother's sword, Kazetono ("Lord of Wind"). It's true form is a silver bird with a human face and a set claws halfway along its wings, which can be folded to resemble human arms. The sword is in constant shikai, and takes the form of a silver sword with one blade split down the middle (similar to Soul Calibur) and two other blades half-twisted around the halves. These blades are serrated in a feather-like pattern. Kazetono has wind-based powers, and can create wind blades. In conjunction with Hihitono, its blade becomes superheated, allowing these attacks to burn an opponent.

His bankai, "Kundalini Hihikazetono" combines the two zanpakuto. He raises Kazetono, which begins to glow blue. He releases it, and it floats in midair as he slams the palms of his gauntleted hands into the ground and shouts "Bankai!". Streams of flame shoot outwards from each fingertips in all directions, as Kazetono's secondary blades unfold from the main blade to lie horizontal. Then Kazetono's "feathers" break off and mix into a swirling vortex of fire that surrounds him. His bankai takes the form of a two-headed skeletal dragon of molten silver, the flames from his thumbs becoming the heads. He floats, glowing, inside the dragon's ribcage, holding Kazetono, with only stumps connected to the hilt now (Hihitono has disappeared), which he uses to control it. If he loses grip on Kazetono, the bankai ends. Eight small dragon heads made of fire (formed from the flames from his fingertips) extend from the main body as well - while they are not very powerful, they can regenerate, and help protect him.

If anyone can identify all the myths and legends I drew on to create this character, you get a cookie :P

It's in a modern-day setting - it seems far more modern than most anime of its type (fashions, etc.)

I was thinking of some kind of point-based system - at each level you can spend points to increase your skill at kido, further the bond with your zanpakuto, etc. (up to a certain limit, of course -

added megaupload mirrors, hope it helps.

it is in fact the same work as on gitp, but i'm updating it quite often (even keeping a changelog).

also i'm considering fusing some reiatsu feats together to :

Reiatsu Burst (soul)
Prq: Concentration 10+ ranks
Once per day you may concentrate your reiatsu for one of the following effects :
- reiatsu surge (see current feat)
- reiatsu focus (see current feat)
- reiatsu shield (raise DR and MR with a concentration roll for a round)
(+ a bonus uses per day feat)

i'll may also add a new power to scientists and reshuffle their unique abilities around:

Forbidden Experiments (lv ?)
You have used your knowledge of shinigami metabolism to step beyond the boundaries of traditionnal science. You may pick one hollow growth ability per level of scientist.
(this idea came while re-reading the autopsy scene of rukia's gigai... these are freaks)

any thoughts ?

I laughed at the Buxom feat - "As illustrated below, this feat can be taken multiple times, its effects stack."

I really think Bankai should be held until 15th level. Also, you have a "Final Release" feat - you do know that Bankai mean Final Release, right? That could cause confusion.

You also have to understand that some of the things Drax got for his Bleach system he got from Behold_the_Void @giantitp.com. The name was Final Shikai/Bankai but he's building a simplified version of it. The idea is that we call them Bankai and Final Release respectively, even though they mean the same thing. Some useful Japanese words for the name

surge: oonami, kyuuzou, harou, sa-ji, hadou, kouchou
over: ue, yo, o-ba-, o-ba
second: niban, kaizoe, shunkan, daini
secondary: nijiteki, fukujiteki, futai, fukugi, ninotsugi
god: nushi, kami
demigod: hanshin
master: tatsujin, shishou, kun, shukun, myoushu, teishu
true: shinsei, shinko, junsui

And shin can mean neo, truth, trust or core (I believe it also has associations with death as in shinigami and "SHIN-E!" [DIE!])

Shikai is "initial release", so this could be second release, "ue-shikai", "kyuuzou shikai", etc.

I would like to suggest some additional release powers

1/3 point: +2 bonus on disarm checks
1/3 point: cannot be disarmed
1/3 point: can be used to trip
1/3 point: deals non-lethal damage
1/3 point: 10 ft. reach
1/3 point: deals an additional type of damage
1/3 point: increase critical threat range by 1 (maximum 18-20, cannot be used if multiplier is x3 or higher)
1/3 point: increase critical multiplier by 1 (maximum x4, cannot be used if threat range is 19-20 or higher)

Based on the weapon balance system here, +d6 damage is +15%, while each of the above abilities are +5%

Given the number of exotic weapon in bleach, you might want to do away with choosing a new weapon type for shikai and just building it with the above abilities.

Rukia gave her powers to Ichigo in the first episode but I think this should be a lengthy/permanent bonus at the sacrifice of Shinigami powers for a length of time, as Rukia does when she gives her powers to Ichigo and Ichigo gains the powers of a Soul Reaper this way.

You could always call it "shinkai". Since the ability seems to be about breaking limits, you could call it "Limit Release", but that would translate as "genkaikai"... come to think of it, either of these could have some really weird secondary meaning in Japanese.

The most accurate way to stat it (though not the most balanced) is this:

1d4 20/x2

Whenver this weapon successfully strikes an enemy, it leaves a mark on their body. Each additional successful attack against the same enemy increases this weapon's critical threat range by 1 against that enemy only. If, on any attack against this enemy after the first, a critical hit is confirmed, the enemy is killed instantly. This is a death effect.

to call on Himitsu Munesanzun bankai, lance must cut his left hand (the one with the claw), wipe the blood over his right arm. then he shouts BANKAI!!!
his right arm starts breaking out with boils, which then explode.

Reckless Offensive:
In this fighting stance, Lance uses his claws instead of his sword. As the name suggests, this stance constraints on Offense, neglecting Defense. Lance gains incredible speed and attacks rapidly.

Sealing Pillar prison:
Similar to Haku's Jutsu in Naruto, this traps the opponent between six pillars
(in a 20 foot radius circle). The opponent is always in the center of the circle.
Lance attacks with his claws, coming out one pillar and entering another.

Windmill Seal Break:
Lance's last weapon used when all others fell. Lance uses Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun as a ranged weapon. weilding the blade causes small amounts of damage to Lance. Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun is attached to a vein of shadow connected to Lance Left arm. This vain is used to manuver Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun. Rosuto Himitsu Munesanzun can reach up to 50 feet long.

Of course there's arrancars ability to transform by using their zanpakuto.

Fast healing is one of the Bount's iconic abilities (well, not the most iconic, but still...), and it seems odd to penalise the character depending on where the DM is forcing the players to go. You can say that the Bount in the series were low-level and gained a bunch of levels when they entered Soul Society, and that a sufficiently experienced Bount could heal himself anywhere.

As for absorbing the souls of living humans, I can't think of a way to implement it that won't result in major DM headaches (and a Bount PC who forgoes living souls may feel that they are about as powerful as a paladin with a helm of opposite alignment glued to his head). The closest ability belongs to the barghest, but Feed simply does not belong in the hands of PCs. Death knell could work, but it doesn't seem significant enough, and can only be used on near-death creatures anyway.

While it seems to be fine in Bleach, eating people's souls, even if they are going to die anyway, cannot be justified as anything but an evil act in a D&D setting. It would have to be reflavoured as absorbing something else, like the "anima" (which 4e will detail IIRC).

Some Bleach stuff I was working on:

All characters have maximum hit points per HD.

Damage Reduction
If a melee attack fails to overcome a creature's damage reduction, the attacker takes damage equal to the difference between his attack's damage and the target creature's damage reduction. This damage ignores the attacker's own DR.

Reiatsu
A character's reiatsu inflicts negative levels on other characters around him. The range of this ability is equal to 5 feet x the character's level. A character has a reiatsu score equal to their character level plus their Charisma modifier. All characters within range of the ability take negative levels equal to the character's reiatsu score divided by ten (round down). A character using a barbarian rage or similar ability gains a bonus to his reiatsu score equal to the bonus to his Strength score provided by the rage. While this ability cannot normally be suppressed, a character may seal their reiatsu, causing the negative levels to be redirected to themselves. Releasing the seal is a move action, and the sudden surge of power causes the character to be immune to reiatsu-induced negative levels for 1 round.

Second Wind
During an encounter, if a PC is reduced below one-third of their total hit points, they may take their second wind as a free action. The character immediately gains the XP he would earn for defeating the encounter. If this would put the character's XP total above the amount required for the next level, the character gains a level instantly. If the PC flees combat or otherwise fails to defeat his opponents, his XP and level return to their previous states.

The max hp thing is partly to reduce the hp impact of all the negative levels (-5 hp) characters will have whenever they engage in combat. Battles are expected to be long.

It seems to work nicely but I can't shake the fact that there needs to be a little change to the Reiatsu ability. If you added that people who get overwhelmed by reiatsu should get fatigued or something similar.

Could you tell me where in the anime/manga where you got the ideas for this? I can already recognize some of them but I wanted to know where you got these from.

Sure.

Battles are usually more than 18-24 seconds long.

Some less balanced stuff and incomplete stuff I was working on - it might give you ideas. I had to rename Bleach's characteristic "bleeding hands" damage reduction to spirit barrier, since arrancar seem ro have traditional DR. And yes, I used a Spanish dictionary for that class :P.
Show
Basics

All characters have maximum hit points per HD.

Spirit Barrier
As damage reduction, but if a melee attack fails to overcome a creature's spirit barrier, the attacker takes damage equal to the difference between his attack's damage and the target creature's spirit barrier. This damage ignores the attacker's own SB.

Reiatsu
A character's reiatsu inflicts negative levels on other characters around him. The range of this ability is equal to 5 feet x the character's level. Favoured enemy (hollows) (Ex): A Quincy gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival checks when using these skills against Hollows. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon damage rolls against such creatures. Every six levels thereafter, these bonuses increase by +2.

Spirit Bow (Su): As a free action, a Quincy can form ambient spirit particles into the shape of a shortbow and arrows. This functions as a normal bow which does not require ammunition. A Quincy can instead form a longbow or composite shortbow at 5th level, a greatbow or composite longbow at 10th level, or a composite greatbow at 15th level.

Enhanced Arrows (Su): A Quincy's arrows gain a +1 enhancement bonus per four class levels.

Hirenkyaku (Su): A Quincy gains the Hirenkyaku ability at 9th level. This functions as flash step, but a Quincy receives a bonus on the attack roll for any attacks made in the same round equal to his Dexterity bonus.

Penetrating Shot (Sp): At 10th level, as a standard action once per day, a Quincy can make an attack with his bow that affects all enemies in a 60 ft. line.

Hail of Arrows (Sp): In lieu of his regular attacks, once per day a Quincy of 14th level or higher can fire an arrow at each and every target within range, to a maximum of one target per class level. Each attack uses the Quincy’s primary attack bonus, and each enemy may only be targeted by a single arrow.

Arrow of Death (Sp): Once per day, a Quincy of 18th level or higher may force an opponent struck by one of his arrows to make a DC 20 Fortitude save or be slain instantly. He must declare this ability before making the attack.

Ransotengai (Sp): At 19th level, a Quincy can use freedom of movement (self only) as a spell-like ability at will

Ageless (Ex): A Bount ceases to age as soon as he attains his first level in this class, becoming effectively immortal.

Outsider traits (Ex): A Bount takes on the traits of the outsider type, though his actual type does not change. A Bount cannot be brought back from the dead like a member of his previous type.

Summon doll (Su): A Bount gains the ability to summon a creature constructed from a piece of their own soul as a standard action – their doll. A doll superficially resembles a druid's animal companion, but is different in many ways. A doll has the stats of one animal from the list available to druids, but its type changes to construct. A doll has the Intelligence score of a familiar of its level. A doll possesses the same number of Hit Dice as its master, but it does not have hit points of its own – damage taken by the doll is dealt to the Bount. If the Bount is reduced to 0 hp or less, the doll becomes inert and cannot be summoned until its master has at least 1 hit point.

Domain (Sp): At 4th level, the Bount's doll gains access to one cleric domain. The doll has the granted power of that domain, and can cast domain spells as a cleric of the Bount's level – 3.

Fast healing (Su): At 7th level, a Bount gains fast healing 1. This fast healing increases by 1 point every three levels thereafter.

Special Ability (Ex or Su): At 1st level and every four levels thereafter, a hollow gains one special ability.
Size increase: At 3rd level, and again at 6th and 9th level, a hollow increases in size by one size category, gaining the appropriate modifiers to ability scores.

Gillian: At 10th level, a hollow transforms into a Gillian, the first level of Menos. Unlike mindless gillians, a character with levels in the hollow class never learns to use the Negación ability.

Cero: At 11th level, a hollow gains the ability to fire a blast energy similar to an eldritch blast, as a warlock of its class level. A gillian always fires cero from its mouth, but an arrancar or higher-class menos may choose the location (this is a purely cosmetic choice).

Adjuchas: At 13th level, a hollow character becomes an Adjuchas, the second level of Menos.

Size decrease: At 13th level, and again at 15th and 17th levels, a hollow decreases in size by one size category. Its ability scores are not affected. A hollow's size cannot be reduced below Medium.

Improved Dexterity: At each level after a hollow has gained the size decrease ability, its Dexterity score increases to match its new form.

Vasto Lorde: At 20th level, a hollow has attained the final level of Menos: Vasto Lorde.

Maestros del cero have an effective warlock level equal to double their class level. A maestro cannot apply invocations to his cero.

Penetrante cero (Su): At 3rd level, a maestro's cero deals full damage to objects.

Sobrenatural cero (Su): At 6th level, a maestro's cero becomes a supernatural ability, allowing it to ignore spell resistance.

Gran rey cero (Su): At 8th level, a maestro gains the ability to use a maximised empowered cero once per day. At 10th level, he may use this ability twice per day.

Size decrease: At every even level, a pseudo-arrancar decreases in size by one size category. His ability scores are not affected. A pseudo-arrancar's size cannot be reduced below Medium.

Improved dexterity: At 3rd level, and every odd level thereafter, a pseudo-arrancar's Dexterity score increases to match his new size category.

Shinigami form: Arrancar transformation causes the hollow to take on a more humanoid form, losing its natural weapons and unique special attacks.

Zanpakuto: As the shinigami ability.

Resurrección (Su): An arrancar may release their zanpakuto to regain the abilities lost by shinigami form. This otherwise functions as shikai, except that the zanpakuto fuses with the arrancar and becomes unusable while released.

Hierro (Ex): At 2nd level, an arrancar gains damage reduction 1/- per class level, to a maximum of his pseudo-arrancar level. This damage reduction increases by 1 if the character is a gillian, 2 if the character is an adjuchas, and 3 if the character is a vasto lorde.

Pesquisa (Su): At 4th level, an arrancar's ability to sense reiatsu improves.

Sonido (Su): As flash step, but an arrancar receives a bonus on the damage roll for any attacks made in the same round equal to his Dexterity bonus.

New Feats

Gonzui [Hollow]
Prerequisites: Arrancar level 1st
Benefit: As a full-round action, an arrancar with this feat may draw in weak souls in the area. This ability automatically kills any living creature with 2 or fewer HD (no save) within a radius of 10 feet per character level. A living creature with 3 to 4 HD is slain unless it succeeds on a Fortitude save (in which case it takes 1d4 points of Constitution damage). Creatures with more than 4 HD are not affected. An arrancar heals 1 hit point for each creature slain by this ability.

Bala [Hollow]
Prerequisites: Cero
Benefit: You may use a modified version of the cero which can be fired at a higher rate. A bala deals one-third cero damage, but can be used in a full atack.

Rapid Bala [Hollow]
Prerequisites: Cero, Bala, Flurry ability
Benefit: You may use your bala as part of a flurry of blows.

It Sucks that Ichimaru Gin's Bankai hasnt been revealed yet. I suggest having his bankai similar to his Shikai, but more like 100 blades rather than just 1.

ya i just thought of a great bankai idea for gin: when he realese his bankai and noting changes (its still a wakisachi) then he "shoot to death, shinso" and the attack is more powerfull then his shinkai but still not enough for a bankai. then when he hits or miss the target, then he says "impale him, shinso" and 100 blades come from the ground, walls any were, even from gin himself!

that i think would be the best bankai for a sneaky character like Gin.

hi, i have one more question for you all
this character shinkai is wind based: it transforme into 2 daguer(for defencive purpose). when he strike, with his feet, hand, daguer, subtle(like Kuchiki Byakuya) blades of wind strike his oponent at range.

now i wanted to know if that would be a weapon attack with reache or a ranged attack??

and Kuchiki Byakuya shinkai and bankai attack would be a ranged attack right??

I say we should create/write up our own characters with their zanpakuto, possibly in the form of a contest. Bankai isn't nescessary, but you can still have it. I would like to see what everyone has in mind if they were to make one. The more unique it is, the more points you get. If any of you have trouble, just look here or here.

Very nice, Prime! If your character is a captain, what squad is he over? To anyone else who makes captains (or lieutenents for that matter), put the squad that they're over. This is just for my curiosity. I feel that your captain, Prime, would be over the second devision, with the special forces, but that is just an assumption.
On a note I figured makes sence, you can take any shikai ability from Behold_the_Void's system and put it into draxrred's system. To take one of those abilities in this case costs 2 points. Bankai abilities are the same but with 4 point costs a piece. This might cause problems, but I'll just have to have that bite my bum as I wait.

I was thinking squad 2 myself, but the only reason this character has the captain class is for the increased release points. Couldn't a character with the required training have the captain class without being a captain?

As for Gin's bankai, what about firing Shinso through portals to strike from unexpected angles? If he used multiple portals, he could fill an area with blades.

I guess your character doesn't have to be an actual captain to have the class, but if that's the case, then you should say so.

Gin's bankai would be quite interesting. My thoughts, it's a really big spear ('cause Shinsou suposed to mean god spear) with some crazy as ass abilities, but again those are just thoughts. In one of the bleach video games, Gin can point his sword in the air, which then causes a bunch of blades to stretch down on his opponent.

Another character below. Maybe we should start a new thread for builds.

Shinigami 19/Kido Corp 1
Feats: Enlightened, Expanded Release (x2), Kido Artist, Sacrifice Release, Spell Penetration

Zanpakuto name: Kessoku Nankan - "Unity Barrier"

This character focuses on defence and elemental kido. His releases let him survive almost any attack, and probably send it back where it came from.

I say we should create/write up our own characters with their zanpakuto, possibly in the form of a contest. Bankai isn't nescessary, but you can still have it. I would like to see what everyone has in mind if they were to make one. The more unique it is, the more points you get. If any of you have trouble, just look here or here.

Since they take up a large portion of the thread, I've started a new thread for builds here: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=15423606

You have to be given the power don't you? I'd say that it requires a template (with level adjustment probably) and only with this template can you take levels in the Shinigami...though I've not really ponderred over it much so I may very well change my mind.

If I recall, the Ravenloft campaign has many feats and whatnot which would be well suited to seeing ghosties and whatnot...and Ethereal Jaunt and whatnot are already in game.

Not exactly.

Thats how Ichigo became a Shinigami, which I must say IS NOT the traditional way to become one.

In most cases, you become a sShinigami by learning in a academy. It is also possible to become a Shinigami through some other endeavor.

No. In fact, Kenpachi appears to have had a zanpakuto without any training.

Hey guys great work I just wanted to toss in my 2 cents even though I have no idea if anyone is still workin on this.
Points:
1. Ichigo was a martial Artist before becomin a Soul Reaper by absorbin Rukia's powers in the first few episodes. Rukia was adopted by the Kuchki family before being a Shinigami. This makes it apparent that the Shinigami should be a prestige class rather then a 20 level prestige class.

2. Ichigo seems to break alot of rules the series has set up before findin out that they do not really exist. (IE. Bein a reouka he has mastered Bankai before anyone else had previosly bee nable to, Hollow Mask before anyone else knew it was possible, and other things that that the later episodes go into that I will not spoil for you here.) So makin a progression for Shinigami does not work for Ichigo this is easily pointed out by the fact his Zanpakto has only 2 forms in the later episodes also. One is the bandaged claymore lookin blade and his Bankai which is a Black katana. It seems Ichigo's Version of the prestige class would be more specialized then anyone is seeing. And I am not sure you should get the Zanppakto's higher abilities from the class /PC as one of the mosst powerful Shinigami is Kenpachi and he has no zanpakto powers to speak of. I would suggest makin the Zanpakto abilities tiered feats with a set of abilities to choose from.

This is a daunting task and I figured i would try to help and see if we can make this work. Bleach as a universe changes alot though so we will have to see.

Well, I would say there are four base classes, one for each of the four disciplines described in the show:
Kido
Hand-to-hand combat
Agility (includes flash step)
Swordsmanship (includes zanpakuto releases)

To have reached the limits of shinigami ability in all areas,

Hey all, just wanted to pop my head in here for a minute.

Over in the Rec Room (the non-gaming forum) we have a BLEACH thread that I'd extend invitation to y'all. It's mostly just me and two other dudes there and it isn't very lively, so any other fans of the show are welcome to join in.

BLEACH thread (We're up to date with the show.)

Kudos on your effort into this whole conversion. I personally think BESM would be better, but due to time and lack of group I don't role-play anymore, and more power to you if you can get d20 to work.

Later (hope to see some of you in the thread). :D

Yeah, BESM would work particularly well here, but we usually focus on first-party stuff (the only universally accepted third-party book seems to be Hyperconscious). Anyone up to statting a BESM shinigami class, though?

I was thinking about making a simple template that allows a shinigami to have two zanpaktous (each with its own shikia and bankia) that he is capable to use at the same time.

I thought LA +2 would be equal to an extra zanpaktou, if each zanpaktou had feats applied separately (like Constant Release, multiple types, and quick release) so u need to take each feat twice for it to apply to both zanpaktous

Does anyone think this is balanced? unbalanced?

By the way, i am not using Drax'd system, I am using the other one

Aizen is far more powerful than the individual Espada, just like Yamamoto is far more powerful than the individual Captains. Aizen was able to basically buckle Grimmjaw, the number 6 Espada, with just a disapproving glance. Yamamoto was able to make Nanao almost slip into a coma by releasing his reiatsu and fought two of the most powerful captains at the same time without coming off with a scratch just with this shikai, while both of them were sporting injuries. Their levels would be astronomically higher than the standard shinigami (and would blow Ichigo out the water).

I don't think it would be balanced or fit with the setting. Zanpakutos aren't just blades. They are the physical manifestations of the shinigami's spiritual force, hence why they usually share the characteristics of their owner. Rarely will they come in a pair (such as in the cases of Ukitake and Kyoraku) but the twin blades are still one entity.

No Shinigami possesses two seperate zanpakutos. Not even Arrancar or Vizards, who each are either Shinigami or have acquired Shinigami like traits, have double zanpakutos. I don't believe it is possible in the Bleach setting for it. Otherwise, Aizen would probably by now be rocking out as many as he could. ;)

Does he? If he does, it's probably the Soul Reaper that died in a flashback of his. To the second part, I really don't think that could happen, but who knows.

"Limit, release!"

I'm glad I leanred about this now. Now I know the shinigami are lawful stupid lol!

When they were orchastrating the resistance to save Rukia I'm left wondering why didn't any of them limit release? (Renji especially..) I mean surely they knew they were breaking the law anyway, who cares right?

Save Kenpachi as I know he purposely hinders himself on purpose to make the fight more of a challenge..

I love bleach lol, but having everyone be a paladin in principle can get annoying.. XP

Bleach is certainly an awesome anime, and I've seen some stuff in this thread and in what the links in this threads lead to that was interesting. However, the classless system wasn't to my liking and I, in my personal opinion, feel that Shinigami should be a PrC, at least if you wish to fit it in a DnD world that has the other classes and that largely takes place in the real world.

That point thing system for buying abilities for a zanpakuto (don't know whose it was) seems interesting. I think I'll use it when I try to write up a Shinigami PrC. I think I'll also include some variants. Especially fluffwise, I'd love to see a spirit war between Bleach's typical samurai-ish Shinigami and some valkyries and some Native Americans (would those actually have horses for shikai, maybe?).

Ever seen Shaman King?

I most certainly have! It was one of my favourite series when it aired here. Sadly, they only aired the first season, maybe the second too, but I never got to see much episodes after the first three or four guys had been beaten i that tournament. And after a while of not watching I suddenly saw an episode where Yoh had to row through some dark tunnel for some reason, and then another episode or two before I didn't see the episodes coming on anymore. I suppose it wasn't that popular around here.

Thanks muchos for that link though. =D I think I'll start watching it again! Not that I have had much to watch these days. All I'm doing is waiting for more Amatsuki and Bleach episodes.

But yes, in a world with shinigami, shamans would be cool too. "Yeah, like, my spirit is totally a God of Death." I think that shamans preventing some spirits to pass on (that is, their guardian spirit) would invoke some shinigami hatred. Or at least great annoyance.

This is true.

For those interested, I am working on a Bleach D20 supplement.

As references, I am using the PHB (3.5E, 4E), D20 Modern, Star Wars Saga Edition, and the "YATA Bleach D20."

There's definitely some good stuff in YATA, but it feels more "snatch and grab what you need from random books" than well planned supplement.

Perhaps in the next few days I will be able to post a preview for everyone.... Time will tell.

I have been thinking about this for awhile. All the machanics of Bleach come down to one's Spiritual Pressure or Reiatsu if you will. What if characters had a Reiatsu/Spiritual Pressure score, based on their levels, and increased by different stats, and we base a lot of what we see from the show on this one score.
I think that this is a really good idea, but I also want to hear what you guys have to say.

Yes, Reiatsu is a major part of Bleach. I am debating on whether to add it as a new stat or base it off of a preexisting stat.

When finished, it will work best for D20 Modern or 3rd Edition, unless enough people want it to be done like 4th Edition.

I have some basic stuff finished, but not enough for a preview.

Also, true hollows will be monsters only. Hollow-based PCs will be more like Sado/Chad from the series, a human with hollow-like powers.

Inoue Orihime-like characters may or may not exist. To me, Orihime is an exception to already established abilities and powers (despite the fact a character has said her powers are similar to his).

Seen and commented. Posted here for everyone else.

Sounds like there's a desire for Orihime-type characters.

I was thinking against it because she's an oddball as far as powers go. Hachigen (one of the Vizard) said that her power with shields is "similar" to his, not exactly like them. Add in the fact that she can reject reality and rewrite it to suit her (healing is a reversal of time), and you get a very unique power. She may not have even been able to manifest her abilities without the hairpins her brother gave her and desire to protect.

Orihime-type PCs would only have powers relating to defense and healing, which are important, except that many people would like some decent combat ability to go with it. The offensive ability for Orihime-type characters would be comparable to 3E wizards using a greatsword. It's possible, just difficult to effectively pull-off.

The reason behind rules for Quincy characters is because they were an entire group of people (making it easier to justify a Quincy PC), not one person.

In other attempts I've found at Bleach D20, there have been specific rules for Quincy PCs and not Orihime-type PCs. Something to think about... while I get back to work.

Here is a tentative list of classes in SG Bleach D20 (possible title):

Shinigami
Quincy
Hollow (Yasutora "Chad" Sado-type PCs)
??? (Orihime Inoue-type PCs)
Bounts

For those who are going to ask, Vizards are either going to be a prestige class or a template.

Hollows and Arrancar are going to be monsters.

As it stands, a Shinigami character's ranking in the Gotei 13 will depend on their level, not a prestige class. Justification for this is found in the Soul Society arc when Ichigo first goes to rescue Rukia. It is said his power is equal to that of a Captain, but he is not part of the Gotei 13 and does not have an official ranking.

If you have questions or comments, drop me a PM and be on the look out for my SG Bleach D20 thread in the future!

Hey guys,
I found these files about two months ago and like a lot of what I saw. But I am a fan of how Star Wars and 4E does skills. So I changed how players bought skills and how they progressed each level and I thought that was all I needed to do. But, then I got to looking at the prerequisites for all the feats and saw that I would had to change them to work with the new skill system.

After that I decided to add all of the skills and feats from the srd rules. (Just so I wouldn't need to look for them in the D&D PHB. Then I got to thinking that I would like to have all of the Kido spells in the book as well. That's when I started to have trouble. Some of the spells from D&D just did not have the right feel for Bleach and then I started to look at the Psionics and found that the would work wel for the Kido powers of the Bleach world.

Next my players felt that we did not have enough healing in the game so I added a version of healing surges to the game. Then i decided that a divine spell list might not be a bad idea, so I added a section for divine spells.

Then I got to looking at the character sheet and decided to try my hand at making a character sheet.

Lastly, I combined the main sourcebook with the Suppliment book, so that all the information was in one file.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I have an update for the Bleach classless rpg and i would love to have youguys take a look and tell me what you think.

If any of the creators of this book do not like the stuff I did with it I will take it down and will not post it anywhere on the web, but I am hoping they do not mind what I did.
