| #1darkdrgon2136Jan 27, 2008 16:35:45 | i have seen no love for theses games, so i am going to try to make the setting myself. any help would be appreciated. races Dirt eating clan Well other than just using Halfling feats for them, I was thinking of a feat to better improve their burrowing: |
| #2shout27Jan 27, 2008 17:07:35 | Kind of hard to help when you haven't posted any content. . . which game are you going off of anyways? |
| #3darkdrgon2136Jan 27, 2008 20:27:02 | 1-3 I posted this before realizing I dont have most of my Books. |
| #4shout27Feb 02, 2008 17:54:45 | Hmm, the Brood are a tough race to take into account, so your best bet would be to simply give them their own base class for the 'Dragon Gene' users. . . a big thing could be these specifics: Light Dragons BAB: Good/Fighter Saves: All Good, maybe? Weapons: 1 Martial Weapon of choice, additionally receives Improved Unarmed Strike (somewhat iffy) Armor: All Armor, All Shields (except Tower[not that I've ever seen anyone actually use them. . .]) Spells: Healng/Cure with a few Buffs sparingly added ('Inflict' isn't available to them), casts like a 'Favored Soul' in terms of #/day/level. Can morph into a Dragon Form a number of times/day for a particular length of time, may maintain this form for a longer period of time if he/she gives up/uses a particular Spell Level on maintaining the form (L1 grants an extra round, L5 grants 5 extra rounds, etc.) Depending on the Dragon Form Chosen and the Character Level, a particular form can stay active for more or less time with the same amount of energy (Spell Levels/First Use) spent. I think that takes care of all the major things I've seen in the series. . . However, depending on the number/quality of the 'Dragon Gene' feats you make, it'd be a good idea to give them a bonus 'Dragon Gene' Feat at certain levels. |
| #5darkdrgon2136Feb 02, 2008 22:27:56 | i added Winlan. With the brood, i was considering just color-coding them and just giving them something like a polymorph self Spell like ability. With a LA of course. |
| #6shout27Feb 03, 2008 2:00:45 | I was considering that too, but it'd also make sense to give them their own class for those who want to play the Brood Princes. Besides color-coding them also brings the problem of classifying them (Whelp+Adult=Easy. . . Warrior, Behemoth, Pygmy? not as easy). hmm. . . maybe lock off Dragon Genes til L2-3? |
| #7darkdrgon2136Feb 03, 2008 9:21:04 | a Gene system could be cool, but they would make more sense as class abilities instead of feats. |
| #8shout27Feb 03, 2008 20:43:16 | yeah, I know that, I was referring to Feats that powered up that side of things. . . (extra rounds in that form, extra power-ups in that form, allowed use of your spells in that form, etc.) |
| #9darkdrgon2136Feb 04, 2008 14:23:45 | like metamagic feats? that would be cool. Expect a mass update soon. |
| #10aettFeb 05, 2008 0:22:53 | Hey guys. I'm pretty new to the D20 system, but I've been talking about doing a Breath of Fire campaign for a long time now with my friends and we may start one within a few months. I've been working on my own set of race information. All I have so far are the ability adjustments, but since I don't have much practical experience, I'm not sure if they would work out as well as I would hope. I'll be going off of my knowledge of the games as a long-time fan, and I'm taking my information from games 1-4 and some supplemental info I've read from the games' creators (which is where I got the names of each clan). I'd be happy to post what I have so far, if anyone is interested. If I get the green light from my friends, I'll begin working on the setting and all that other important information. Good luck with your stuff, I'm really glad to see the BoF series getting some love. |
| #11shout27Feb 06, 2008 13:20:52 | before I forget, for the winlans, also add a lesser hovering effect. . . maybe every 50 feet counts as 10 feet for the purposes of calculating falling damage. With an addition that if they succeed in the DC 15 tumble check to reduce the damage taken by 10 ft, anything above 100 ft is treated as a simple 20 ft drop. ex. 500 ft drop is treated for a winlan as a 100 ft drop, if they succeed in a single DC 15 Tumble check the drop damage is reduced to that of a 20 ft drop. . . I figure that the wings, even though they can't really fly or glide, give them a massive advantage in that area, is all. |
| #12aettFeb 18, 2008 17:22:37 | I'm surprised there haven't been any more updates to this thread. In any case, I've been working on my own information for my upcoming campaign. I've got a wiki set up - it's pretty empty right now, but I've got the information on each of the Clans set up. As you can see, it still needs updating and some balance, but any suggestions would be appreciated. |
| #13AryxbezMay 21, 2008 20:53:44 | I'm surprised there haven't been any more updates to this thread. In any case, I've been working on my own information for my upcoming campaign. I've got a wiki set up - it's pretty empty right now, but I've got the information on each of the Clans set up. As you can see, it still needs updating and some balance, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Said link bolded to make obvious from quote of last poster That said site has even ideas for their 4th ed ability scores, I thank the people responsible for that wiki, looks like some work was put into it. Well although I can probably assume this thread is long dead, Nonetheless might as well contribute, as there is nothing here. However the Link wtih the said races seems to have some flaws (no offense aett ); odd ability bonuses like +1 or +3 are not suggested to do, Dirt eaters should probably mention a burrow speed of 10ft *, *=put this at the claws description, allowing them to dig and such. I'm not demanding these, just suggestions For my personal input, I've truly only played the 1st Breath of fire, I might give the other games a chance, otherwise prefer the 1st to all the others. I feel it captures the fantasy elements and such in a way that I like. Each race kinda had a role to each other, such as the ox-men or Iron worker clan, as the dwarves/ strongman race of the land, what with them being known for their craftsmanship. Also the Winged race / winged clan, acting as the "elves" of the setting, being all secluded from the other races. Even the Dirteater clan, the mole creature, is small sized, being the Gnome and Halfling /small creature race. So really all these races definitely looked different from each other. The races/clans from Breath of Fire (1st game): Light dragons: I don't know, I can't think of anything for these guys Dirt eating clan: (Mogu) Molemen, unsure, perhaps use something such as gnomes or the above mentioned site pretty good depiction perhaps, just mention they have Burrow 10ft* *from their claw ability or something Forest Clan: (Bo) pretty much Gnolls, except they have a civilization, as Gnoll fits everything quite accurately, even the Favored class: Ranger Iron Worker Clan (Oxmen): (Ox) Seem to be a mix of minotaur and dwarf (my 2 fav races), so the abilities+4str, +2con, -2 dex, wis, cha is doable, +2 to craft instead of +1, (as doubtful dwarves are used at all if using Breath of fire races) Manillo Clan: (Gobi) Fish people, a simple fish people race that I think matches them pretty good is the Locathahrace from the Core MM. On the Locathah, I'd advise removing the LA+1, too weak of a race to be there. the Other site quoted above has there land speeds and such much more practical for land and sea. So for Loca=+2 dex, int, wis, which are good for a merchant, could probably remove +2 dex. Winged Clan: (Nina) as name implies, elf or humanoid with wings, I'd say the Raptoran from the Races of the Wild supplement might work well, got the whole elves packing wings thing down I'm sure. The other site don't know, as I guess one should compare the Raptoran to that of the sites winged to see which is better. MISC: Karn-Human thief/rogue, thus race is obvious Race of Arad, a desert place with creatures in cloaks and such, no race I know of Bleu: She has upper of a lady, and the lower bottom of a snake, some form of a naga or somet monster race I can't think of at the moment, a Yuanti hybrid? |
| #14aettJun 23, 2008 15:55:11 | I intentionally stayed away from the Dragon clan and from Deis/Bleu, because I felt that a character playing as a Dragon would possibly take importance and attention away from the other PCs in the game... and because creating some kind of Dragon transformation system would be 1) confusing and difficult, and 2) likely too powerful. I stayed away from Deis, because as anyone who has played the games will tell you, she is one of a kind and technically a Goddess, and therefore isn't a general species that would be commonly seen or should really even be played by a PC. (I know, I know, she joins your party in BoF 1 and 2, so of course you can do whatever you want in your own game, but this is what I'm sticking with in mine.) Anyway, I've made a lot of updates recently, with 4e available now. The only races that are pretty much finished are Dirt-eating, Iron-worker, and Manillo, because those are the races that my players are using in the current campaign. The rest of them are very nearly complete but need one or two more racial bonuses/abilities. What I did was write down every racial bonus and ability from the 4e core races and put them in a list, then I divided them up (not necessarily evenly) to my BoF races and renamed some of them. Then I saw which races still needed more to balance it out, and I either made some up (with lots of help from my friends) or took ideas from existing abilities and adjusted them to work. I really like what we have so far, although the Forest clan ended up becoming almost exactly like Elves and the dirt-eating clan is basically a cross between the Dwarves and Halflings. But I really like having eleven fairly unique races to choose from, with a variety of abilities. I think that my decision to make the Highlander clan, being monkeys, basically a clone of the Human race (except for the stat bonuses) might be controversial, but it was getting late and we didn't feel like creating a bunch of new abilities. That may change in the future, however, if a PC eventually wants to play as a Highlander and we have some new ideas by then. As an aside, I really like 4e so far, and I think that the BoF races work better going by those guidelines than they did with 3.5. |
| #15akodoJun 23, 2008 22:56:21 | I like the concept of a short stocky minotaur |
| #16AryxbezJun 24, 2008 21:57:05 | I like the concept of a short stocky minotaur Forget not, also combining the craftsmanship of the dwarves, as the Iron-Clan are known for their great skill in creating weapons and the like. Also on Bleu and Light dragons, Bleu tis true she's practically a goddess, although she's essentially just a high level monster character, however theres nothing on the accurate Lamia (4th ed lamia is bugs? what!!?). So nothing to really make a character like that in the first place, sad it seems. Also on the Light dragon forms, actually I could make them as a power, however the power itself sounds as if it would grant many bonuses, that unlike of normal power for a race and class. The dragon forms would probably give the Winged "hover" ability, depending on dragon form, probably give a resistance and vulnerability to an energy type, Gamefaq's guide sources say the defenses were better, (tis a give), and apparently resistant to status effects. So it'd probably be something like +5 to all saving throws (50/50 D20 roll) and/or +2 to +6 to all defenses?, maybe Resitance 5 (physical attacks or just in general) Oh and the magical attack, could be like a breath weapon equivalent, dealing appropriate element liek damage depending on the form. Lightning dragon deals lightning damage, Light dragon=radiant damage and so on Sounds probably too powerful, however might be workable if broken up into parts, and have it scale and such. Broken up probably into feats? and the Paragon Path Might work. Otherwise be interesting to try and pull it off aye? Also Aett, is yer campaign currently using 4th ed rules? As it appears none of the characters really showing anything 4thedish on them. Also the whole 3rd session, is blank, so the 4th session obviously makes me wonder what I missed, I've read all the sessions. I think yer campaign is kinda interesting, the players sound like they win all the time, (also makes me wonder how they knew one of the players was hit by a were-rat) and looks like they're just going in a straight line of sorts of a journey. Of course, this is being said without knowing truely any of the details, I'm sure there were decisions that we don't know of. So is it done conventionally or online? I also wonder if ye are using the old 3.5 craft rules, as noted by the Iron-Clans bonus to a craft skill type of thing. |
| #17aettJun 26, 2008 1:28:09 | Also Aett, is yer campaign currently using 4th ed rules? As it appears none of the characters really showing anything 4thedish on them. Also the whole 3rd session, is blank, so the 4th session obviously makes me wonder what I missed, I've read all the sessions. We switched over to 4e starting with, appropriately, the fourth session. The summaries are very brief and only list the events that happened, not how the players decided to go about each decision. They have come very close to death on a few occasions, one of those times being the fight with a were-rat (who they knew was a were-rat because he transformed right in front of their eyes and he later spoke to them about his mysterious origins). The adventure probably appears to be going in a straight line because 1) the players have a destination in mind and are primarily working on reaching it, and 2) it's my first time DMing a campaign so I'm still learning. We're actually playing this conventionally, as a weekly Monday night thing. And yeah, my friend Rick (who plays Adol) was very upset at the lack of crafting in 4e because he built his character around that ability, so we slightly converted the crafting rules to fit a little better within the boundaries of the new edition. I just checked my wiki again and noticed that none of the character pages have been updated since we started 4e, with the exception of a brand-new character (Caderyn) who one of my players created to replace his 3.5 character (Legend). Sorry about the missing 3rd Session. Nobody bothered to write it that week! (Speaking of which, I still need to write up the 6th Session summary.) I'll put up a brief summary right now based on what I still remember from that missing session. |
| #18AryxbezJun 27, 2008 23:07:57 | First time Dming? ah is it just DMing? D&D in general? otherwise good to know, and good luck with yer ways of DMing and such. I kinda like what yer doing, giant bats, why not!? Also the rats I think was something I could've seen in a Breath of Fire game actually! Although Detail does make the logs sound more intriguing, oh well, I guess I can only hope you'll make the 3rd log, and will look into the 6th one as well! I'm willing to lend my help(although limited) to yer Breath of Fire Wikipedia. Also I could easily help by posting my ideas here. which is probably what I'm going to do. Also of course I've already put in my input, as far as creating them for 3.5 kinda went, of course they werent really whole suggestions I'm sure. Oh and on the Iron-workers, the Arm of Gantz ability, sounds like it would imply more the strength of the Iron workers than their crafting, goes eithe way of course. Ya know, for a racial feat or alternate racial ability perhaps, could have to represent the way OX was able to use his strength to break walls. Of course not necessarily breaking walls, but perhaps that said feat could give a racial bonus to Strength related, Athletics checks or something Iron Fist of Gantz With a mighty Punch.. Ye bring down barriers, whether wood or stone alike Prequisite: Iron-worker Clan, Str 13 Effect:Receive a racial +4 on Athletics or Strength checks +6 at Paragon +10 at Epic Special?:must involve trying to break something? Not a good feat I just made up I know, just a thought however. Also sorry to say, the other races of the other games I don't really care too much about. Probably because I've yet to place the other games, that or it seems the very "core" first, showed to be quite dynamic I guess. EDIT: I'll admit though, yer campaign may soften my dislike for the other races, I'm actually kinda starting to like the Shell clan. Well at least the Shell Pirate capt? I'm hoping to see him later whether ally or villain. I would proabably definitely have him be recurring. |
| #19aettJun 30, 2008 18:30:39 | Thanks for the feat idea, Aryxbez! It's going to help, because we still need to convert/create new feats for the BoF races. I'll bring it up at our session tonight. |
| #20AryxbezJun 30, 2008 23:08:55 | mighty welcome, didn't know ye appreciated it ever so, regardless, if it's feats for some races, I'll try to give what little input I can. Looking at what ye currently have for the races: Dirt eating clan Well other than just using Halfling feats for them, I was thinking of a feat to better improve their burrowing: |
| #21darkdrgon2136Aug 20, 2008 12:36:28 | Woah, completely forgot about this. It seems you guys have gotten prety far along without me, so I will just update the OP with what you guys have done. It seems your going on 4th as well, and Im not converting, so just drop me a PM when you want me to update the OP again |
