| #1TheRealOrionMay 27, 2009 10:27:38 | Hi everyone, I've been trying to publicise this as much as possible and I thought a dedicated thread might be best. I want to fill the next iteration of Phoenix with sample heroes but I suck at making characters. So I'm asking for your help. Contact me via PM so I can give you the most recent (but still rough) version of the game and build me a mess 'o heroes and villains! You're basically free to create whatever you like, and if you (please please please) attach your real name to the characters, I'll give you a "created by..." credit. I'd like to have characters with CLs of from 4th to 30th (go epic if you wanna!), and a variety of power sets and backgrounds. Giving them a specific, historical/geographical background is great. Make a character who grew up in your home town, for example. The rules for making characters are all in the book, but I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have, as well. There's also a whole thread about Phoenix already. To get you started, here are a sample character that I made. Kinda lame, right? Please help me. Brainchild Appearance: Brainchild/Kyle Uszkalo wears a light jacket with a white T-shirt that has a cartoony brain stenciled on the front, as well as beige cargo pants (or shorts, if it's warm), and army boots. Back when he was Jr. Mind (see below), he had an Amazing Costume coloured in blue and purple that matched Mr. Mind's, but those days are long gone. Personality/History: Kyle was a child prodigy whom Mr. Mind, a telepathic superhero, identified early on and trained to be his sidekick (with Kyle's parents' permission). While Mr. Mind specialised in mental communication and projecting illusions, Kyle's ability was geared towards sheer Telekinetic strength. By the age of 12, he could throw a car, if needs dictated. His incredible Telekinetic power was only rivaled by his once bottomless intellect. Sadly, when Mr. Mind was killed in action, Kyle, only 15 at the time, became embittered. He now ignores his intellect as much as possible and long since dropped his flashy superhero costume. He can't quite kick the habit, though, and although he denies that he has any interest in heroism as such (claiming that he "only does it ironically"), the fact is that he's still out there, risking life and limb. He's not really sure why he does it either. Power Theme: Brainchild's powers are all Telekinetic. He started with simply lifting and manipulating objects, but under Mr. Mind's tutelage, learned to deflect projectiles, and even raise himself into the air. Since Mr. Mind's death, he has developed a bit of a nervous Telekinetic tick. Whenever a threat gets within 10 feet of him, he reflexively blasts his Telekinetic energy in all directions (Energy Attack: Burst [kinetic]). He has learned to restrain himself to the point where these blasts are not lethal, but without Mr. Mind to train him, he doesn't know how to gain more control over this potentially useful ability. Combat/Tactics: Brainchild's grasp of combat is somewhat limited. He was trained up as a fighter by Mr. Mind, but has little grasp of actual strategy. When his back is to the wall and he feels he needs to fight for his life, he tends to simply throw a dumpster at his attacker, but usually just after Flying to a safe position, above and away from the fight. However, if he is not directly threatened and can keep his wits about him, he will initiate a Telekinetic grapple and simply remove his enemies from the battlefield. Based on his study of architecture, Brainchild is also good at (but reluctant to) do strategic damage to buildings such that they fall down on people. Like dropping heavy weights on them, this is a last-ditch effort on his part as he is not comfortable doing serious bodily harm to anyone. This is not a moral stance, per se, so much as an unwillingness to have it on his conscience. Class : Soldier 6 Challenge Level: 12 (6 levels + 54cp) Hit Dice: 6d10 (35hp) Mass. | #2penchantMay 27, 2009 23:44:55 | I have run and played in several Superhero games in a variety of systems. I have found that you really need to define a common mythos. For example, I was playing in this one game and I created a very classic DC type hero called The Magician. His costume was a classic tux n tails with a cape, a cane and a top hat. He wore a white porcelain mask that was plain except for a painted monocle and a curly mustache. His powers were telekinesis, but he used sleight of hand and trickery to disguise basic power as a variety of skills such as animating objects and performing classic tricks as attacks. Unfortunately, the person running the game was in the mindset of early '90's Marvel comics, with an emphasis on the spandex and the social angst. He couldn't understand WHY i didn't just hit the badguys with a truck, and I could not explain why such a character pleases me so much more than playing a Cyclops blaster. You've been working on Phoenix for a while now, and I suggest you refine or define your genres a bit. Incidentally, my favorite Superhero: The Question |
| #3TheRealOrionMay 28, 2009 0:17:15 | All I can really tell you is what kinds of game I tend to run. The system itself is designed to encompass both the possibilities you mention. The power levels go from "protector of a neighbourhood" to "one-man army." Part of the reason I'm tossing this out to others is that I want some variety, a way to showcase how much you can make out of this system if you're creative. The characters I create tend to be fairly archetypal, but often with a twist of some kind. Brainchild is a former sidekick who became embittered, for example. There's a Revisionist/post-Silver Age feel to that character. I have others who are straight-up heroes and villains, though. The Batter is a speedster who wears an old-time baseball uniform. Little Dragon is a mytically-empowered kung-fu hero who's the spitting image of Bruce Lee. Monkey Queen is a triad-trained assassin who turned away from the syndicate and now works free-lance. My games are all set in Vancouver, so I try to include a Chinese feel, just because the Chinese community in that city is very big. I'd love for other people to represent the flavour of their communities in different ways. Make me a hero that represents Portland or Guelph, or Palo Alto. Variety is really want I'm shooting for, here. |
| #4penchantJun 04, 2009 19:40:36 | Deadline Ace reporter Jack Dupp was incorruptible. Time after time, he published the dirty laundry of a dark and heartless city. He scoured the underbelly of the underworld to expose the worst of man kind to the light of day. This was his undoing. Following a lead from an anonymous source, Jack followed the right hand man of Vinnie “The Nose” Scarpitelli deep into the warehouse district. He snuck into the abandoned warehouse with only his courage and his video camera to protect him. Inside he found barrels and barrels of waste. Rather than properly dispose of the toxic sludge that was produced by the city's chemical factories, The Nose took the money for the disposal contracts and was simply storing the waste here. Jack had just finished collecting enough evidence to put The Nose away for good when he began to smell an acrid smoke. As he burst out of the warehouse office he saw the cavernous space filled with smoke and the fierce orange glow on all sides. Seconds later the warehouse exploded with enough force to level all the surrounding structures, spreading a toxic cloud over the area. Jack Dupp had only enough time to try to shimmy down the floor drain when the building went up, but not before he was horribly scarred and changed for life. Regaining conciousness on the banks of the river, a shadowy figure arises for the purposes of justice and vengence. Having no fingerprints, no face and no identity he takes on the name Deadline. He dons a white porcelain mask, a symbol of the empty page yet to be printed, and travels the darkened streets in a black suit, trenchcoat and fedora. His weapon is the gun, his justice is final and his mission is to wipe the city clean once more. 4th level Sleuth 6+3d6 HP (16) 6+3d6 Power Points (16) Initiative: +9 Speed: 30ft Defense: +17 (Class +2, Dex +2, Danger Sense +3) Touch: +17; Flat Footed N/A Base Attack: +3 Attacks: Fist +4 (1d6 nonlethal damage), Colt 1911 pistol + 15 (2d6 ballistic damage), Double Tap Colt 1911 pistol +13 (3d6 damage) Ability Scores: Str 10, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 16, Wis 16, Cha 8 Size/Reach: 5ft/5ft Saves: Fortitude +2, Ref +7, Will +9 Reputation: 0 Action Points: 8 Wealth Bonus: Occupation: Investigative Skills: Bluff +2, Computer Use +11, Disable Device +10, Disguise +8, Gather Information +9, Hide +9, Jump +17, Knowledge (Current Events) +10, Move Silently +9, Observation +14, Open Lock +11, Search +12 Proficiencies: Armor (light), Firearms (Personal, Advanced) Weapon (Improvised) Feats: Brawl, Double Tap, Holdout, Point Blank Shot Class Abilities: Connection (+4CP) Investigative Knack (+2 investigation skills) Bonuse Feat: Will save enhancer (Iron Will +2) Slippery Mind Sharp Eyes I Sixth Sense: +2 to observation rolls Expenditures: Amazing Costume (2CP): The mask and suit are psychic manifestations of his black and white will. | #5TheRealOrionJun 05, 2009 0:15:52 | Thanks man! Looks fun. I'm a little trepidatious of the direct reference to "Anonymous," the internet group. Frankly, I'm not a fan of those guys. But I like the build, the gritty, street-level feel of the build. How would you feel about changing the name and persona a bit? |

| #7TheRealOrionJun 05, 2009 11:10:59 | Oh that's a great name. Thanks, man! I appreciate that. |
| #8backstabbistJun 05, 2009 12:40:09 | uh... not to nitpick (which always precedes a nitpicking) Why would an 'ace' reporter have CHA as his dump stat? Wouldnt a reporter that dumped Cha come across in a paper as dull and unappealing as reading an essay on toxic waste by Henry Kissenger? Dave Barry dont sell copy by being informative. I dont care if the guy writing the expose on toxic dumping was a 3 armed freak with no ears and fangs... not every newspaper puts a pic on the byline a) There is toxic dumping going on in Watson County. b) Local criminals are dumping toxic waste in our county, here is how we can stop it One way is the Int & Wis use of media, option B is the Cha way to make folks take action by persuasion and intimidation(extortion)... what activist reporters do Looking at the CP spent, the investigative reporter that used to be armed with just courage & camera had his largest CP expenditure (by LOTS) on ShootingFolks. |
| #9penchantJun 05, 2009 14:43:18 | The character exists after a transformative process. He might have had an 18 charisma before. Now with all the charm and beauty of Darkman, he squeaks out with an 8. He likely never held a gun before the accident either, but since it is a trait likely picked up from the accident he finds that guns are a natural part of him. I bet Peter Parker's Agility didn't cost very many CP either, until the spider bit him. To be contray, however, there is a difference between a reporter and a news anchor. Reporters come in all specializations and most don't sit well in front of a camera. He could have been intelligent and insightful while still having a face for radio. Charisma is MY dumpstat too, but I can be quite elegant in print. The same can be said for Stephen King. |
| #10backstabbistJun 05, 2009 15:26:37 | just as that 'oh so good lookin' Cobra Commander leads folks with his charisma, while hiding his ugly mug behind a frickin mask... what is that, crooknose, warts, earhair and unibrow behind there? |
| #11TheRealOrionJun 05, 2009 19:17:34 | I can buy the low Charisma. That's totally fine with me. The alternative is "he had a 16 Charisma, but the accident destroyed it, and now I've just lost the 10CP I invested in it when I started..." If I were to put my GM's hat on, I'd say that that's just kind of mean. If you go to the trouble of creating a character with a cool backstory and an Achilles' Heel like that, then I'm not going to penalise you for it. BTW, Penchant: email me your real name so I can give you a "created by" credit! |
| #12atanakarJun 05, 2009 23:04:16 | The Wraith Has the ability to create a 20'x20' area of darkness centered (but not locked) on himself. The Wraith has sonar vision on top of his regular vision. He get no penalty for striking at opponents inside the area of darkness. He also has the ability to silently hover 5' above ground (speed 30feet/round). He deals damage to his opponents with his ice cold claw/claw routine... |

| #14penchantJun 06, 2009 0:15:02 | BTW, Penchant: email me your real name so I can give you a "created by" credit! Charlie Dunn If you're going to be a writer, you have to get your name out sometime. |

Super-vehicles and super-animals are the two things, actually, that I've never gotten around too. |
| #23penchantJun 15, 2009 2:19:03 | Titan OMEGA Air Force Major Theodore Nelson was exactly where he wanted to be: alone in a space capsule getting ready to be the first man to perform a high orbit over the earth. He would go higher than any other Mercury astronaut before him. His mission was to verify the midpoint of the gravitational forces between the earth and the moon. In so doing, he would also spend more time in space and complete more orbits than any other man alive. Yes, Major Nelson was where he wanted to be.. .but wasn't going where he should. An unseen and unknown gravitational field would would cast his little Mercury pod far afield of the planned trajectory. He veered off course and with little power to correct his course, Major Nelson watched helplessly as the Earth got smaller and the Moon grew larger in his porthole. He was caught in the moon's orbit as it slowly drew him closer into its icy clutches. His fears of a slow death followed by a sudden stop were interrupted by the touch of our life giving sun. A solar flare that had been sailing through space, cast off from our nuclear mother, washed over the moon and Major Nelson's poorly protected Mercury capsule. It was destroyed instantly, but Major Nelson was infused with the power of our Yellow Sun. Blown back he slammed into the Moon's surface and slept. Meanwhile, the very same gravitational disturbance that cast Major Nelson's mission astray began to enter Earth's Atmosphere. The contact with our atmosphere revealed the alien shape of a strange craft. Though invisible, its super-sonic wake alerted the mighty Air Force of the United States of America. Military forces converged upon the spot the little ship had landed and discovered the aweful truth: INVASION! This lone scout did not make it back to report to its diabolical masters, but what our brave men did find let them know that this was but the first to come. America... and the rest of the Earth needed a hero who could combat this interstellar threat from beyond the black... Major Nelson awoke deep in a crater on the far side of the moon, his very form infused with raw power. With little effort he lifted from the surface and went seeking answers in the only place he knew... Upholding the Law is in his blood. He practiced every day with his service pistol, he read every manual and attended every seminar. He made his way into the elite ranks of SWAT, the city's Special Weapons And Tactics unit. Then came the day that life changed for Ray Cortes. He responded to a break-in and hostage situation at GlobalDynaBio Corp. Leading the assault team into the research wing, Ray was caught in the crossfire between Super Powered Criminals and a Super Powered Vigilante called OmniMAX. It seems that discharging high energy weapons inside a lab with biological and chemical experiments could prove dangerous (what are the odds, right?). Well, after clearing the rubble, rescuers discovered most of the pieces of OmniMAX and an apparently unharmed Raymond Cortes. As such things tend to happen, Raymond had his own super powers now. He is left with the power to project high energy bolts of X-ray radiation as well as use low levels of x-rays to peer through most materials. His high energy state also allows him to greatly improve the efficiency of his own body boosting his strength, toughness and neurological responses. Loathing the vigilantism that precipitated his condition and owing to his own history, Ray elected to remain in the police department and is now a very special part of the SWAT team. | #25TheRealOrionJun 15, 2009 14:18:26 | Man, these are great! Thank you so much. Edit: What's the total CP cost on those guys? I need it to calculate their Challenge Ratings. Did you just go with 10CP per level? Also, can you note when/if you've spent extra CPs on feats? I just want to be able to show all the math in the entry. |
| #26penchantJun 16, 2009 16:59:53 | I just went with 10 CP per level plus the 40 to start with. All feats came from the character levels and class, I didn't spend CP on feats at all. Unfortunately I didn't keep my notes on the builds, I just entered directly onto the boards. I only spend CP on Stats, the features (like Amazing Costume) and the powers. Everything else is from the classes. OK, someone else needs to post some characters. I'm tired of hogging the show. |
| #27TheRealOrionJun 16, 2009 18:08:54 | That's great. I'll fill in the CP costs myself. I'm keeping track of all the enhancements and stuff just in case I need to change anything. Makes making changes easier. Thanks again for your input! It's much appreciated. |
| #28RagitsuJun 16, 2009 18:25:11 | ![]() The Flash / Barry Allen (TV version) Origin: The Flash (1990) Power Level 8 / 148 Power Points I have seen many takes on The Flash, from Jay Garrick up to Bart Allen, but never Barry Allen from the short lived TV series. Like most of The Flashes, Barry is fast, hard to hit and not especially durable by superhero standards. He's also lower powered in general compared to his comic book brethren, with Air Control and Water Run being one time things, and Insubstantial 4 being a side effect of a dangerous drug. As I noted in the Drawbacks section, Barry does need to eat much more than the average person. He generally keeps his hyperactive metabolism up (in one episode he eats an entire box of corn flakes for breakfast and in another episode, five whole pizzas by himself) and will consume even more after a particularly strenuous stunt. Being a police scientist by profession and somewhat of detective from his adventures as The Flash, Barry is a pretty skilled individual. While he relies on fellow confidant Tina McGee's assistance and the occasional informant, he is competent on his own. *Using Mutants and Masterminds Second Edition* |

Flash TV was one of the best translations of Superheroes to television. I would have watched every episode they made. Mark Hamil was great as the Trickster |

He get no penalty for striking at opponents inside the area of darkness. He also has the ability to silently hover 5' above ground (speed 30feet/round). He deals damage to his opponents with his ice cold claw/claw routine... I haven't given up on it! My bi-annual «all-hell-breaks-loose-at-work-season» just finished. |
| #32TheRealOrionSep 01, 2009 1:11:13 | Glad to hear! I was just thinking I'd like to put somemore entries into the sample NPCs chapter and then finally put out a new iteration. If you want to hammer out any special rules to make that character, let me know. I'm happy to make some custom stuff for in-the-box NPCs. I'll just attach a note that explains them. |
| #33TheRealOrionSep 13, 2009 15:08:39 | I have a lot of sample PCs now, but more are always welcome! What I could really use, though, is sample PCs that cover all of the classes. What I don't have yet is: Mastermind Sidekick Sleuth Socialite Thinker Inventor Mentalist Mystic I would really love to have those sample PCs in the game. If you want to build one, just post a message to that effect and I'll cross it off the list. If any of you want the most recent (as yet unpublished) rules, just PM me with an email address. Thanks again for all your help, guys. You're making it a better game! |
| #34TheRealOrionDec 13, 2009 3:49:23 | Once again, I'd like to put out the call for original superhero builds using the Phoenix system. Anyone interested in donating their time to the project gets: -the most recent iteration of the Phoenix rules -a 'created by' credit under the caracter -my undying gratitude I could really use characters who are mid-level (6th to 15th, more or less), I need villains more than heroes, and I need characters that represent the following classes: Sidekick, Sleuth, Socialite, Thinker, Mentalist. Please send me a PM with an email address to which I can send a 5mb file. Once you have the PDF, I encourage you to get buildin'. |
