Apr 18, 2008 19:35:39 Does anyone know of a really good, and completely free, mapping program/site with which I could build a city. I want to run a d20 apocalypse campaign and need a blasted metropolis.

Apr 18, 2008 19:45:25 My advice : just get your hands on a map of New York, Boston or Huston and decide the level of destruction you want to apply. My apocalypse campaign uses Montreal, my home town. Players really like because they have mental pictures of the city. The story telling is much easier that way. ;)

Apr 18, 2008 20:28:33 My best advise dont use maps until you need to desgin a close encounter. If you really need a map however you can always use the rough google maps or if you have world then you can use that and get real stuff.

Or I just though of this find Call of Duty 4 over view mapps they can work although very small in scope.

Apr 19, 2008 11:27:59 Your intrinsic suspicion is unfounded. Seriously, you use a city that you and your players know, and you open up a whole WORLD of detail and sensory familiarity. Your home city, even if it's a small one, has more detail, more texture, more stuff in it than you could ever possibly design. Seriously, take a couple of hours and start reading up on the history of your city (do it on-line, you don't even have to put on clothes) and you will find a million game ideas, hiding around every corner.

Apr 19, 2008 23:21:13 I tend to stay downtown as well. There's a lot going on in downtown Vancouver. There are other neighbourhoods to go to, though. I plan to expand into them... when I start running games regularly again.

Apr 20, 2008 6:53:06 In my area (Quebec) the web site of the Ministry of Transportation has a section of downloadable PDF roadmaps. The smallest scale is very detailed.

Google Earth is great too. Just zoom-in on the sector of town you need and do a «screen shot». Simply print and voilà!
