Great thing is, I have been doing a GIANT MONSTER campagne for a while now and its super fun. So I encourage you who are going to start a new game, make yours monster sized. |
| #2zombiegleemaxJan 21, 2008 23:43:41 | Thing is, unless your players are okay with running away all the time and never getting a chance to strike back, it'll frustrate the PCs if they can't hurt the sucker. If I were to run a giant monster game, I'd let clever players hurt the monster. Crazy strategies would be encouraged... a particular one comes to mind if the characters are military and have a lot of resources: 1. Find a street near a group of tall buildings where the sewer/subway tunnel is large. 2. Pack said sewer/subway tunnel with enough explosives to bring the street down, and with it the monster. 3. Rig tall buildings so that, when explosives go off, they collapse where the creature will be. 4. Fire at the monster to get it's attention. Lure into the trap, deal massive harm with buildings, get away quickly as bunker-busters are dropped on the sucker, penetrating the rubble and hopefully the monster's natural armor. Speaking of which, I wonder if there are stats for bunker buster bombs... |

Unless your characters get a hold of military weaponry. I have my players use giant mechs to take them down. I figure I would set my game in the future-ish. Giant monsters are just great. |
| #4zombiegleemaxJan 22, 2008 0:05:03 | It's humorous that you should bring up Mecha vs. giant monsters... My friends joked that they were expecting Big O to pop out of a building and fight the monster in Cloverfield. lol! |
| #5mormonpriestxJan 22, 2008 0:20:46 | I was hoping for the power rangers or ultraman. Giant monsters make great villians. They really do. They are larger than life, daunting task to take them down. |

| #7thegameslaughterJul 21, 2008 13:30:30 | okay idiots if you really watched the movie you'd know that the monster was shot thousands of times not to mention the bombing before it jumps and hits the helecopter and then at the end when it was bombed. if you waited untill the very end of the credits you would here a static "last transmition" saying its still alive meaning two things 1. it cant be beat as much as we know 2. their probably going to be a second cloverfield so those of you saying you need to be able to hurt it, if you want it to be realisticlly like the movie it cant be hurt by are weapons so thus in the game it makes sense to just run to survive but yes being in the military in the game would help with the smaller spider things and it would give you a sense of security untill the bigin came around |

| #10mormonpriestxJul 21, 2008 19:45:36 | To Gameslaughter, AHH NOOO DUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHH! Freaking idiot, we all know the monster didn't get destroyed, thats the fun of the game. Its the challenge of survival. Creating new monsters that could come from the deep or hell, bring in another monster. You honestly thought people here would think a pistol could take it down... you are a f**** moron. Get out of my post if you are gonna disrespect people here! Its people like you who ruin creativity. I bet you beat you beat kids for drawing you pictures too. You deserve a roll on the jack ass smack down table (2nd ed. style) I take no offense to you (I forgot the name while typing this) but I already took into consideration for the terrasque |

| #12lonewolf_the_hunterJul 22, 2008 15:59:17 | Thing is, unless your players are okay with running away all the time and never getting a chance to strike back, it'll frustrate the PCs if they can't hurt the sucker. If memory serves there are bunker busters in Guardians of Order's Guide to Military Vehicles. Actually as a DM and a player I see three major themes that a Cloverfield campaign could follow (must rent the movie, though I'm pretty sure I understand the plot based on discussions of the movie I have read, the previews and the infinite number of You tube, "I know what the monster is" videos) Theme 1: Front lines, your PC's are military and fighting the monster, doing there level best to Destroy or at least slow down the creature. Theme 2: Classic survival horror, your PC's are basically the survivors of the monster's initial attack desperately trying to get out before the government decides the city is a write off and drops The Bomb. Theme 3: Ghost Recon meets Resident Evil, your PC's are an elite Counter terrorist/ Hostage rescue unit sent "behind the lines" as it were with a three fold mission objective 1 Gather intelligence; Observe the damage done by the creature and its hitchhikers, arrange for immediate extraction of survivors found and if possible get close to the monster. objective 2 Obtain samples for study; Move thru the city to points were the creature received sever enough injuries to have dislodged DNA bearing material, and retrieve any such material. Objective 3 Assess secondary threats; with the monster leaving little monsters everywhere and a city in shambles, it is entirely possible that all to human adversaries may move into the city, using the chaos to there own advantage, it would also be important to learn if any such group were in the area, and also to observe the little monsters to gauge if they were thriving or perishing in the monster's wake. |
| #13tema69Jul 22, 2008 16:20:30 | That's pretty awesomely put, Lonewolf. You gotta watch the movie, I, and everyone I know who saw the movie, loved it. I hope they start making more of that kind of film. |
| #14mormonpriestxJul 23, 2008 1:34:50 | Lone Wolf, I appreciate your view. I have been discussing a lot of your points (even before I read your post). One way to look at things... as a survival horror not only do players have the giant monster and the little buggers, you got to figure in the human factor. People can loose control. Some lunatic killing people thinking they are serving a divine purpose, cultist (like chthulu) would worship it (making sacrifices), or just fighting to survive... It becomes a mad world. But when it comes to this kind of game, it solely depends on the players. No player who is interested in only combat will like it because they will feel they can not win. Life isn't about winning... everyone dies in the end. Life is about surviving to that point. Make it count. So players could set up a mission to get a hold of a blood sample (if you want to take the military route). People could introduce meta-humans (super hero style). It doesn't matter... that is the point of fantasy. Do what you want... its just a game. No one should ever tell anyone no in the game (unless it actually isn't fair). |
