Clover's Field movie out in January 2008, looks like a "Cthullu" film set in the modern world. Could a "Return of the Elder Gods" be something you want play in D20?

Core to this "Setting" are the Prophecies of Ethan Haas (a 19th century Parisian Prophet). As you solve the riddles of the elder gods and cross the fields of possibility you find a world that is loosing the Godwar (or rather you are letting them in that they might re-write history).

String Theory invalidates Religion and Evolution so maybe you were living a lie anyway and the war was already lost.

I saw it last Wenesday and had a few thoughts, like what if, in the 1920's-30's, did Cthulhlu rise up and attack American cities. I imagined Cthulhu like creatures using their tenticles to grab people and eat them. I suppose one could do clean out a city within a night or a day(24 hours). Clean out, I mean eat enough people so that the remanders are too difficult and time consuming to get at. Going after a large amount of people crowded and running is easy. Having to sniff out and get out the survivors from their hiding places would be difficult. They'd probably follow our major highways to find nice juicey settlements. After they got done with a city, they'd move onto the farms and fields and that's where they'd really eat. All those cows.

The military. Let's talk about the military's response. It would take a few days for the military to deploy a sizable defense against these creatures. Too bad the for the cities. Alright, your average rifleman is useless against these things. However, artillery, well. They might be able to take down one or two of these things. Taking lots of casualties.

This isn't some apocalypse. It is a cycle. A cycle that has been going on for millions of years. They rise out of the waters, feed. then when they are full, retreat.

What they leave behind is what you should worry about. Millions of little Cthulhus that will eventually grow into these giant monsters. But now, they are in every dark place, feeding and waiting.

Imagine, if you will, every hundred years, these beasts rise out of the ocean and feast on the creatures of land, laying eggs etc.

I like the image of pilots flying toward the awakened Cthulhu only to have the Great old one simply look at them to make the pilots begin screaming uncontrollably and deliberately crash their planes into the ground.

I also like the Idea of self mutilated cultists in cowls standing on rooftops and in parks offering themselves to their God with an insane glint in the eyes.

Deep Ones walk out of the harbours, subduing and rounding up those attempting to hide only to drag them out into the streets in strange nets ready to be consumed.

A battery of artillery line and fire at the huge beast, gouts of green slime and ichor from the wound splash on the pavement and start eating it away, sickly green mist gathers about the wound as it begins to regenerate, Cthulhu roars at the gathered soldiers, his tentacles flailing wildly as each of the soldiers is driven insane as Cthulhu's malignant aura is projected at them, many shoot themselves and each other, others gouge out their own eyes and others begin bashing their heads on the ground.

Its the COC D20, worse case scenario, and all happened because the PC's let the Sorceror Cultist and his original arabic copy of the Necronomicon get away.

Cloverfield IMHO was one of the worse movies ever hyped... it was so bad it made the first dungeons & dragons movie look good.....

I wasn't that bad...far from actually. But I digress, I found that the movie offered great ideas and inspiration for us dm's on how to run a situation where a huge beasty gets loose on a city and just starts having its way with us.

I thought the movie was great, much better than most the newer monster movies that have been coming out recently. The thing to remember is that the monster was more an event than an enemy to the main characters. The one time a character personally interacted with the critter, he died.

In CoC D20, this would probably come out to Great Cthulhu causing madness and AoE problems (unless someone was dumb enough to attract his attention) while the PCs dealt with cultists, deep ones, and other threats personally.
