| #1custom_gamerMay 10, 2008 22:39:25 | I've been rolling an idea around in my head for some time and I worked up a rough openning for a Campaign. The Disease only effected those on the ground at the time in Infection. everyone in the air or out to sea or in space were comlpetely safe. Those people were not immune however anyone on land would contract the fatal Disease after a week and be dead after two more days. Small settlements were set up out in the ocean where those people uninfected would live for a time. Scientist around the world began to build up a fleet of ships that would carry those safe far from the Infection. Thousands of Starships were designed and built or requesitioned(spelling?). After a few years, the Migration began. As the new colonists left Earth all the nuclear weapons and missiles in the world launched and Earth was Obiliterated. Now the people on the Colony ships, escorted by the entire Spacefaring Navy, about 2,500 ships, headed into unknown space. Basically the entire campaign takes place in space and on ships. The Fleet has 10 Colony Ships, 150 Star Freighters(Super-Tankers), 6 Star Carriers, 4 Dreadnoughts, 15 Battle Cruisers, 50 Heavy Transports(Carrying vehicles and supplies to build the new colonies), 15 Fleet Carriers, 40 Tankers, 60 Battle Ships, 30 Strike Cruisers, 20 Cruisers, 80 Frigates, 80 Destroyers, 40 Corvettes, 300 Assault Fighters, 150 Escorts, 500 Fighters, 400 Orbital Shuttles, 80 Fast Freighters, 100 Scouts, 60 Haulers, 200 Clippers, 20 Liners(For sightseeing). The Characters are part of the Fleet(of course), but they may be in any part of it. Adventures would range from scouting ahead, meeting other Spacefaring races, space combat, "police" work on ships, or anything else tht may come up in a space mission. Any thoughts? |

Players would want to take this into consideation as it will give depth and a skeleton background to their story. Purchase DC aside it would be best to allow the players to each have their own Starship. |

To me, frigates and corvettes should greatly outnumber things like battleships, strike cruisers, and the like. I have some questions, hopefully to help you flesh the setting out. What's the total human population in the fleet? Was anyone on Earth left behind? Given a large enough population, would there be a splitting into different factions and perhaps given enough controversy, infighting? As way as first adventures go, nothing beats having the PCs keep an eye on terrorist activity. By 4th or 5th level you could have them holed up against a full on hostage situation with a group of rebels planting bombs on one of the colony ships (I'm assuming these are the main civilian locations). |
| #4doomsoughtMay 11, 2008 15:52:21 | The earth wouldn't be destroyed, just render it completely inhospitable to life. Make floor plans of the ships you will have the characters on, Ahead of time, before you even tell them about the campaign. Use graph paper (available at your local CVS). |
| #5custom_gamerMay 11, 2008 18:19:54 | Thanks, I had thought about those things. I don't know why I have the ship problem. I infighting I like, I think that could be a great avdenture Idea. The colony ships are in fact the main living areas. As far as maps that could be hard as they would be huge. They have all the things a large city needs. I can find a new way to destroy the Earth. No no one survived on Earth. |
| #6azisienMay 11, 2008 19:27:40 | Well a gaping plotline just waiting to be explored in this setting is the origin, method, or what not of the Infection. What was it, why was it unstoppable, could it happen again? Some factions among the fleet might want to research it, others may be afraid and just urge everyone to leave it along with the Earth behind. Rumours that a sample of the Infection might be somewhere in the fleet, and whoever has it controls the fleet. Violence ensues. (I see that being a later-on, higher level adventure) |
| #7custom_gamerMay 11, 2008 20:13:29 | I think that is actually a very interesting idea. If you could help me I think this would be able to develop into a very stable and balanced Campaign (something I am not known well for). What do you say? |
| #8azisienMay 12, 2008 20:59:27 | I can't really say I'm for hire right now, no thanks. I don't mind pitching in on threads like this with tidbits here and there. If I'd be interested in making any setting at all, it's probably a Mass Effect one anyway. |
| #9custom_gamerMay 16, 2008 17:26:30 | The Disease. 70% instant death 20% unaffected, died in ten days 8% not on land 2% immunity This began in year 2012 so let's say 10 billion people on Earth. 7 billion died instantly, 2 billion died ten days later, 1 billion still alive. About 50 million died bater because they did not know the land was contaminated. There are roughly 1 billion people when the colonies depart in 2021. It is curently 2035 the Fleet has encountered three hostile aliens and one friendly. They have checked over thirty planets but they were all infected with the same disease. There are about 2.5billion people in the Fleet now. 50% are military, 20% are business owners, 20% are civilians, and 10% are other. How does that sound? |
| #10doomsoughtMay 16, 2008 21:49:13 | Make the aliens alien... as in not humanoid. the friendly ones are some sort of motile plant... maybe anerfed shambling mound formians would also make some good borg |
| #11custom_gamerMay 17, 2008 12:10:05 | How could you convert a 3.5 Starwars Race to D20 Future? |
| #12custom_gamerMay 17, 2008 12:47:18 | The People's Rebellion When the first planet was found to be inhospitable, people began to voice their opinion. Many joined quickly. The People's Rebellion is against the Fleet. They have worked their way into the heirarchy of the Fleet's government and are able to land a group of immune commandoes on every planet inspection. They are weary of the Fleet and think they are trying to keep them on the Colonly Ships. They are working with their scientists on an inoculation for the Disease so that everyone in their faction can live on a planet that is infected. So far they are unsucessful. They have one problem, every planet that is found infected is destroyed. They have developed, or stolen weapons enough for their commandoes and aquired enough ships for when the day comes and know they just wait. |
| #13grimgrinMay 17, 2008 14:10:13 | Thats a good idea for an ongoing story line. I have read several sci-fi books about colony ships. These are some other common themes in Colony Ship novels you may want to include in your campaign as subplots. 1. A caste society is established on the ship or fleet. People are assigned certain jobs due to their birth rather than their skill. Captain's children become captains. Techs are trained as techs. Drudges are born drudges and are given the most dangerous and filthy jobs. Those that speak against the captain are demoted, marooned, or killed. 2. On their arrival to their destination, they find that their target planet is hostile to life and so they turn around and head back for their home planet (or Earth). The hatch a plan rule with their superior military technology after they sterilize the planet of any disease survivors. During the long journey home they have been indoctrinated into the idea that they are a superior race and that the have every right to exterminate all that remained behind on Earth. They are the purified strain and they can not allow "diseased" humans to exist. 3. The ships are fall into worse and worse disrepair. Rations are short on all the ships and maintenace is falling behind on the upkeep of the fleet. The best materials tends to end up in the hands of the most powerful and hoarding, black markets, and substandard manufacturing is frequent. As ships become desperate for repair and resupply the fleet begins to canabalize itself and fragment. 4. During the long journey, humans begin to tinker with their own DNA code to perfect their race. These may be real benefits such as improved strength and mental accuity or cosmetic traits such as skin, eye, and hair color. The captains may breed for greater obedience or may genetically tailor humans for specific life roles (soldier, engineer, artist, slave, etc.) 5. Aliens may attack the humans as they pass by in convoy or they may live where humans wish to make their new home. Humans my stumble into a intergalactic war and be asked to choose sides. |
