Mar 20, 2009 18:59:30 Anyone on the forums familiar with U.S. involvement in any armed conflicts in say, the past 20 years or so? Wars, or what have you? For my next RP project my players all need to know eachother from when they were in the military together and have lost touch since then. The game takes place now in the real world and they're all going to be middle aged. Well, 30's to early 40's so it would have to fit within that timeline. They're not supposed to be Delta Force or anything fantastically elite. Just all from the same unit. I was going to go with the Gulf War if nothing else came up, but I'd like to know what else might work since my knowledge on the topic is pretty limited.

Mar 20, 2009 19:25:26 You could have them be some of the guys that survived the Party In Panama in 88 (or was that 89?).

Remember when we invaded Grenada in (81?) ?

Mar 20, 2009 19:36:53 Hmm... It's a possibility. What was that one all about? I'm trying to look it up now. I remember Heartbreak Ridge, but I don't recall much background on what they were doing there. Most of my memories of the movie are of Gunny kicking Swede's ass and Mario Van Peebles generally acting like a douche. :D

so we ....um... did a Humanitarian Extraction By Armed Intervention,
rescuing the poor drunk college kids before they knew they were in danger.

It was one of those What did you know & when did you know it deals,
but we knew ahead of the HostageTaking so we stopped them from taking hostages. We didnt wait till after they were taken hostage and kilt a bit before acting.

The Persian Gulf War(2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991). Aka. "First Gulf War" and Operation Desert Storm.

The Yugoslav Wars were a series of violent conflicts in the territory of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) that took place between 1991 and 2001. Aka. War in the Balkans, or "War in (the former) Yugoslavia", "Wars of Yugoslav Secession". (my piece was during Operation Provide Promise)

and of course, The War in Afghanistan, which began on October 7, 2001 as the U.S. military operation Operation Enduring Freedom, was launched by the United States with the United Kingdom in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. (I was training people going there)

Unified Task Force (UNITAF), a United States led, United Nations sanctioned multinational force which operated in the Republic of Somalia from 5 December 1992 to 4 May 1993. A United States-initiated effort code-named "Operation Restore Hope". Also, The Battle of Mogadishu (also referred to as the Battle of the Black Sea) or for Somalis The Day of the Rangers (Somali: Maalintii Rangers) was a battle that was part of Operation Gothic Serpent that was fought on October 3 and 4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, by forces of the United States supported by UNOSOM II against Somali militia fighters loyal to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, with support from armed civilian fighters. The battle is also referred to as the First Battle of Mogadishu to distinguish it from the later Second Battle of Mogadishu. ;) This one is memorable for "Black Hawk Down". and the game.:D

What about Mil on the Fed side at Ruby Ridge or Waco?

Mar 21, 2009 12:26:08 Operation Acid Gambitwas a plan to retrieve Kurt Muse, an American civilian living in Panama and widely reported to be a CIA operative from the Carcel Modelo, a notorious prison in Panama City. Muse had been arrested in 1989 for setting up covert anti-Noriega radio transmissions in Panama.
Political considerations delayed the raid, conducted by 23 Delta Force operators and supported by the Night Stalkers, until the United States invaded Panama to arrest Noriega, in Operation Just Cause on December 20th, 1989. The retrieval went smoothly, and was carried out more quickly than any of the elaborate rehearsals. During extraction from the prison, the Hughes MH-6 Little Bird helicopter transporting Muse crashed. Everyone except Muse was wounded, and they quickly ran and took cover in a nearby building. The Delta operators managed to signal one of the gunships flying over the area with an infrared strobe light, and shortly after an armored personnel carrier from the 5th Infantry Division extracted Muse and the retrieval team.

What about Mil on the Fed side at Ruby Ridge or Waco?

The military was not involved in either of those instances with the exception of providing training and technical support at Waco. Anything else would have violated Posse Comitatus.

Yeah, there was equipment and technical support. :-)

There were tanks that were brought out, and lessons were given to FBI employees (who may have been former military or reservists), but everyone was very careful about who was involved in the standoff and who was just present in the background with a support role.
