Crafting Rules Help

The craft (mechanical) skill has come up in our game a lot more frequently than we thought it would, and me and my DM were wondering if we could have some help assigning DC's to things.

The book lists moderate as an engine component, complex as a 9mm, and advanced as a jet engine.

Does that mean that complex includes basically all firearms?

Specifically:
-does an assault rifle or machine gun with full auto fall into complex or advanced- how much more complicated is an M16 than a glock, anyways?
-by the same logic, can we reduce the DC to moderate by making an old-fashioned style weapon, like a M1 garand or even an old springfield?
-What do you think a chaingun like the M242 Bushmaster would be?


I know this is up to the DM, but really, he's as clueless as me. The best we can figure is old fashioned single=moderate, new fangled semi=complex, fullauto= advanced.

But that would put a rifle on par with a jet engine, which doesn't seem quite right.

Help.

I'm about to head to bed soon, so forgive me if the following is completely incoherent. I'll fix it in the morning. :P

Old does not necessarily mean less complex, as new does not necessarily mean more complex. One of the advantages of some modern firearms is that many are LESS complicated than their predecessors. The whole of a Glock is less complicated than the wheel mechanism of a wheel lock pistol, and a flint lock isn't that much less complicated than a bolt action, for example.

Simplicity means a lot in modern combat weapons, especially when it comes to field stripping, cleaning, field maintenance, ect. So its one of the things modern manufacturers strive for.

I would leave the DC as complex for firearms in general. Every model has its own simple areas and complex areas that vary from gun to gun. Full auto isn't any more complicated a mechanism than semi-auto, its really only a few parts difference in most cases. In some cases its little more than a single part (supposedly). Modern's crafting system just isn't set up to handle that kind of intricacy and detail.

I would, however, give a HEAVY penalty for working without a machine shop, at least.

Narukagami is pretty much right, but I wouldn't leave it as moderate for ALL weapons, just almost all weapons. For example the Bushmaster is definitely a more complex tear down than an m16, its such a high spin, gas fed etc etc that it'd be a lot more complex in a lot more areas.

You've definitely gotta use your best judgement, if you and the GM aren't sure on such things, the d20 line up has access to a lot of books that talk about different weapons, and usually has some descriptive content to help make that decision.

nothing personal, but I really hate the misuse of Chaingun:

When I get my hands on the guy at ID Software that decided to call the DOOM fat gattler a Chaingun, I'm gonna murderlize him to itty bitty pieces & burry him alive. He has single handedly set back common firearm knowlege 2 decades.

A chaingun isn't that much more complex than a car engine, mechanically. Maybe less so. (and I mean chaingun in its proper usage, not Doom's :P) The rotation mechanism of a minigun maybe slightly more complicated, but not on Jet Engine level, probably even still less than car engine level. A GAU-8 on the other hand...

Example: Its easy to assume that because more people know how a car works than know how a gun works, then a gun must be more complicated. But looking into the actual mechanics of how these things work, its simply not the case, the car is actually the more complicated of the two.

Just to supplement what Narukagami is saying, I know people in the army with a 10th grade education who can do a lot of repairs to their rifle. Doesn't take a degree, hell doesn't even take a GED. But that's for an everyman's army assault rifle, again, some guns would be higher.

I'd be half tempted to but gun repair at a very low end, and let it build to medium for more complex stuff.

Backstabbist, you are forgetting something. Those are stats for a 30mm cannon, but this is a 30mm Gatling gun. a 7.62 does 2d10, right? according to the menace manual, a 7.62 gat does double the damage, quadruple the area on autofire, +5DC, and reflex for half. Under the same logic, I give you:

Gau-8 Avenger
30mm Death Machine
Dmg 8d12 (2x 30mm cannon)
Crit 20
Type Ballistic
RI 270' (2/3 max range/10)
RoF: A
Ammo: Linked
Size: Gargantuan
Special: On autofire, attacks a 20x20 square (instead of the usual 10x10) and is reflex save DC20 to take half damage [ie, still enough damage to kill your average bear].


On burst fire, (using the common x2 dice houserule) this monster would do 16d12 damage. What wouldn't that kill?

I've been know to bandy about the term "Iowa Battleship" on these boards,
its a multitasker, it fits so many lines of discussion.
Now where did I put that pic of the 17" thick Iowa door..... even the "weak spots" are frickin hard

how many toasterovens does it take to salvage enough "Parts Mechanical" (Apoc?) to make a 9mm?

N/A Toaster-ovens yield only "Parts Electrical"! It's an electrical appliance after all.

The problem is you need a steel barrel to make any firearm, and there is nothing in toasters that supply that. With the proper equipment and a Bench Lathe you can make a high quality gun barrel out of parts from a car, or any heavy machinery parts that gives you a long enough steel axel or pipe of proper dimensions. The rest is mostly made out of sheet metal, at least for a low-cost weapon. Sheet metal can be recovered from many sources, some heavy desktop housings may prove adequate. Last but not least you will need a spring, and this is something that you will usually just buy. At least you will need to buy the material from witch you make the spring, or you won't get the right quality.


Some older toasters may provide you with some sheet metal, but most modern toasters are made from aluminum and plastic. The only useful thing made from steel is the bottom plate, but that is usually to thin or made from corrugated and/or perforated steel to be of great use...


I'm sure I have overanalysed this, but you did ask...
