Create a New Feat, or Should I Even Bother?

I've been spending the past while making an alternate history western campaign setting, with a large dose of the Book of Nine Swords redone for handguns.

Revolvers are, obviously, going to be the choice handgun of the game, but I'm wondering if I should introduce a feat for "fanning" the revolver either for access to iterative attacks, or some other benefit.
Should I just assume everyone with PFP knows how to get all their iterative attacks with a revolver? If so, is there any other purpose this feat could serve?

Oh! I'll just earmark this question on: Does anyone know where I could find stats for some good (realistic) black-powder weapons? The ones in the D&D DM's guide suck. I'm particularly looking for flintlocks.

Look in the Modern Player's Companion, published by Green Ronin. It has a feat called Lightning Shot that lets you attack with a semiautomatic as if it were automatic; it uses all your bullets and attacks a 10-foot square. Check their book for the full stats.

If you can, find Sidewinder: Recoiled Wild West Adventure sourcebook (from Green Ronin) for d20 Modern.

Is it incredibly similar in flavor, or simply a Western with good mechanics for Westerns?

Good to know.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into those...
I think it's time I bought myself some Online Supplements. :P

Sidewinder is basically a reprint of the d20 modern with extra weapons, gear, feats, and occupations related to the Old West.

Two other options are "Dead Lands d20" which introduces and entirely new mechanic for spell casting and "Spellslinger" which is only $5 at www.rpgnow.com

I'll take a whack at this feat.

Fanning the Hammer
One of the more flashy shooting stunts of Hollywood western movies was of a Cowboy rapidly firing his single-action revolver by holding the trigger back and quickly sweeping (“Fanning”) the pistols hammer backwards, and when it reaches the limit of its backwards movement, letting go of the hammer which snaps forward firing off a shot.
Prerequisite: Single-Action revolver, Point Blank Shot. (Optional -Maybe a Dex Ability Modifier of +2 or greater.)
Benefit: While using a single-action revolver in their primary hand, a character can fire off multiple shots (Minimum of two – six bullets) against a single target for a full attack action. Due to the inherent inaccuracy of this action, the character suffers a -4 penalty on attack rolls, but gains a +1 of dice of damage with each bullet fired (Max of +5 dice of damage.
Special: In order to utilize this feat, a character must be firing a single-action revolver and have both hands free and available. The character can not perform this feat with weapons in both hands (Two Weapon Fighting), or with their hands bound. This feat will not work with a weapon capable of Autofire (Semiautomatic).

Hmm, I might have to try for an Anachronistic Gunfighter hero.

I forgot to say that I like that idea and it would be a very interesting campaign/setting to explore or read about.

Fanning the Hammer

Interesting work. It doesn't seem unbalancing, considering it won't work with double-tap/burstfire, and the character loses accuracy.

Glad you like the concept. Though I probably won't post our (two others are involved, though I'm the primary cruncher) work here - if it's good enough, I'd like to take a shot at publishing it as a supplement for D20Modern. Granted I'll have to figure out how to make the Nine Swords stuff non-breaching - I'll be happy to keep you guys up to date on it, and possibly link some of our stuff in this or later threads.

Thanks, it was a quick brainstorm. I used the D20 Mod core book, and a brief search on Google for actual shooters describing what the stunt is like, for reference.

It was also called "Slapping the Hammer" but due to the recoil and climb of the pistol and the rapid movement of the other hand on the hammer spur, the shooting trick is a bit "tricky".

Four out of five gunslingers/ Old West performers agreed it was not an accurate way to shoot, but it made a hell of a lot of smoke (Old bullets didn't have smokeless powder untill a few years later.) and it was a flashy way to unnerve an opponent.

Good luck on the story!

The book pretty much set the tone for running and playing a Western RPG game using the d20 Modern rulebook (which is a requirement).

Yep. That's why it's part of my d20 [Modern] collection.

Thanks guys!

Now, how about my question about black powder weapons?

GP?!

I think the stats were originally made for D&D, hence the comment about the range increments varying greatly between D&D and D20Modern.

@ Grimgrin - Thanks! I think I'll probably use those rules for anyone wanting a hand-me-down weapon to avoid spending much on the more cutting edge revolvers of the day.

Yeah its an old post. Changing the gp to DC would throw off the table and the prices of archaic weapons would of course be even less valuable if rifles and revolvers were common.

d20 Past has stats for matchlocks and flintlocks as well as archaic vehicles, You can by it for $3 on Ebay LINK

If you got $5 to spend you can buy a copy of Sidewinder:Recoiled at Paizo LINK
