| #2World_of_AndromedaJan 13, 2012 17:48:02 | WoTC has announced they are working on the 5E. Do you plan to contribute in the consultation process? I signed up for the playtest, but I don't know if I will have a group to play the rules with. What are you expections? Right now, I don't have many expectations. One of the issues WotC will face is how to join together opinions which are diametrically opposed. I'll be interested to see how they do it. Because of this, I figured I would have a look at things, and go from there. I know that when 4E came out, as they posted news, I found that I disliked what they changed (things that were "fixed" from 3.5 were things that I liked that way). However, I'm going to give 5E a clean slate (which I did with 4E), and see what happens. Do you think that Modern will get a new set of rules under 5E? Honestly, I would be surprised if it did get a new rule set. Given how little support it got when it was an actively developed game, I'm not hopeful for a new rule set. That, and honestly, I don't want to repurchase my books...after all, they still work . |
| #3bone_nagaJan 15, 2012 17:24:11 | Do you think that Modern will get a new set of rules under 5E? Not from WotC. d20 Modern got very little love when 3e was running, and none under 4e. The only way I see them doing it for 5e is if the main product line is going strong, they hit their target $50 million mark, and then they get a little leeway to explore some niche products. In other words, no. I do hope that Dias Ex Machina updates their work for the new edition. I liked what they did with Amethyst and Ultramodern4. Hopefully 5e won't be so rigid to where people start complaining if another publisher deviates slightly from the treasured design philosophies of WotC (at least until WotC also deviates from their own design philosophy, and then it becomes ok). |

| #5rustam1Jan 16, 2012 18:18:52 | Personally, I hope Mr. Dias continues his outstanding work in Amethyst and development of Ultramodern4. I'm doing the happy dance over Amethyst and I'm so looking forward to him bringing Ultramodern4 onto the market (soon?) |
| #6Luis_CarlosJan 20, 2012 15:11:58 | I think we could see a future new d20 Modern. For me the great, great, great, great challenge like publisher is d20 modern creatures are more or less dangerous if PCs are civilian adventures (from d20 Past) without firearms or like soldiers (from future) with heavy weapon. The PXs rewards ought to be different if PCs have got better or worse equipment to fight. A d20M 2nd Ed could be the D&D 5Ed Plan B. |
| #7riberberoJan 25, 2012 13:05:08 | Isn't it a bit too soon for another edition? I think I'll keep v.3/3.5 edition rules. |
| #8steventirey1985Jan 25, 2012 15:06:14 | Isn't it a bit too soon for another edition? I think I'll keep v.3/3.5 edition rules. 3.0 came out in 2000. 3.5 in 2003 (3 years after 3.0) 4e in 2008 (5 years after 3.5) 5e will be 2013 (will be 5 years after 4.0) By WotC timeline, its time for a new edition. Do you think that Modern will get a new set of rules under 5E? No. WotC said they would give Modern some love in 4e, and it never happened. They probably won't do anything for Modern in 5e either. Modern settings just aren't a big seller. Fantasy is where the money is at. Futuristic stuff does have some potential (not as much as fantasy, though), but modern stuff just isn't that popular. |
| #9riberberoJan 27, 2012 14:58:25 | Is there really the need to put out two new editions every decade? Why not invest more (all of it!) into supporting already established editions (like they did with the Forgotten Realms setting for 3rd edition)? Do I really have to buy another Player's Handbook and GM's Guide (that won't be as exhaustive and complete as the earlier edition, anyway)? Besides the financial factor, all these new cards/miniatures oriented rules are really striving off what I consider to be a true Pencil & Paper RPG (imagination and immediacy are the roots of fun in my games). It feels like the classic, true inspiring elements of what I thought to be a RolePlayingGame when I was a child are all vanishing one by one (and not so slowly, at all); immersion, original storytelling, choices and fun, reduced to "pick your daily superpower" strategical limitations and annoying modern-fantasy clichés. But still, hope lives on. Maybe 5th edition will turn stone to gold. Time is on my side. |

| #11ShesheyanMar 06, 2012 13:22:28 | The editor now in charge is Mike Mearls. Excerpt from somewhere else. it remains to be seen if it will work... « Now that DDXP is finished, a lot of information has come out about what 5e is going to be like. ENWorld has an excellent page with a comprehensive list, but if you don't want to go through all that, here's my summary... The basic mechanics are still unclear (although I'd expect d20s to be involved at some stage) There are still things like attack bonuses, but they scale at a lower rate than in 3e or 4e, so monsters remain usable over a wider range of player levels. Characters tend to get more abilities as they go up levels rather than just better numbers. Most classes from the core of each previous edition are included. The classes tend to have a default "build" which is the simplest way to do that class, and is most like TSR-D&D versions of the class. However, you can choose more complex (but balanced with the default) options for each class to make it more 3.x-like or 4e-like. The simplest version of some classes may be more complicated than others, and the classes are put in three groups to warn/inform you of this. For a Fighter, the default build seems to just be getting better to-hit and damage, but the more complex options are like 3e feats or 4e powers. For a Wizard, the default build is Vancian spell casting, and the more complex options include things like at-will powers or swapping low level spell slots for other abilities. Speaking of spell slots, spell damage is likely to depend on the level of the slot the spell is put in, rather than the level of the caster. Rituals will be there, and will require material components. Skills and Saving Throws are both some kind of simple attribute check. The game will make heavy use of passive checks. You can get various skill bonuses to different types of check, but the list is open-ended and nebulous rather than fixed. These skill bonuses are optional. Classes as well as races give ability score modifiers. There are optional "Themes" which are backgrounds/etc. that give you skill or other bonuses. Some things that were previously classes may now be themes to add to other classes. Combat is non-gridded by default, but optional rules for gridded combat will be in the core books. I have to say, I'm liking all of this so far. » |

But then, I am a fossil that rolled stone dice and my "character sheet" was berry paints on the cave wall |
| #13ShesheyanMar 17, 2012 7:09:13 | Characters tend to get more abilities as they go up levels rather than just better numbers. I'm an old fart too btw (32 years of GMing). Are you saying you don't like how characters in Modern advance classes get new abilites as they rise in level ? Are you saying you didn't like how the Paladin, Monk and the Druid aquired new abilities as they gained levels ? Its been like that since OAD&D. |
| #14Luis_CarlosMar 31, 2012 2:32:46 | I wonder if the future Ravenloft could be a "playtesting" of the new d20 Modern. A second d20M is a great challenge because the balance of power is totally diferent when PCs are civilians or military soldiers. I suppose there are some ideas about a d20 Spectacular soucerbook (about superheroes). Let´s imagine, a demonflesh golem (Fiend Folio, 3rd Ed) is more or less dangerous if the PC is a zombi-killer blonde cheelader with a chainsaw (why have I said that example, what was I thinkg about?) or a mecha rider from d20 Future (or a sniper from a helicopter). |
| #15MechaPilotApr 01, 2012 2:07:57 | I think it's possible that Modern might get an update with D&D 5e. However, if this does happen I see it coming in the form of modern being a module for 5e; which would require the purchase of the 5e core books to use. As I enjoy both fantasy and modern rpgs, I can't say that I'd have a problem with that (so long as it's well executed). Plus, for WotC, it seems like the cheapest way to earn the most profit out of a Modern update. |

Many D&D players didn't buy in Modern because it was NOT compatible with the core system. I've heard this countless times since d20 modern came out. |
| #17MechaPilotApr 25, 2012 21:49:35 | Monte Cook has apparently left the lead role of the D&D 5e design team. I have not followed his career, or those of any game designer. For those who know more about this, does this bode well for a 5e Modern or does Monte leaving make this seem less likely? |
