hi all i'm pretty sure there must be something out there already for this idea but i was wondering has anyone seen/converted the d&d classes into 10 level advanced classes.
the reason is i'm looking at running a completely D&D style adventure in a modern world setting.
and i mean pure d&D style story as well, you know ancient evil, magic rings, small band of heroes, holy swords & guns etc etc.
paladins that ride harley's, rangers with gps that kinda feel.

i just like the idea of making a modern d&D world basically, its not going to be like earth is now its an alternate earth where you still have kings and magical beasts but the peasants don't farm we work in offices
any how any ideas or links would be much abliged :D

well, I suggest taking modern elements and convering them to standard DnD rather than trying to convert DnD game mechanics into modern.

before modern came out, my group did some of this.

It is really only what you can buy that is different, things like guns, cars, etc.

The biggest problem seems to be that the DnD feats and builing up a tree to a pinnicle kick ass ability doesn't work, as most of those are built around melee attacks and the like. I do NOT suggest tweaking those, but rather just dropping them. This actually has the added benifit of making all classes seem more modern and real, where they learn skills other than just combat. Say goodbye to Great Cleave, Improved Bull Rush, Snatch arrow and the like (well, unless magical swords are still quite common)

Simple firearms work-in:
Every time there is chance where a character could normally melee attack once if something was in range, they can make TWO shooting attemps.

MicroWeaponChart
Compare to
Heavy Xbow, 1 shot, 1d10 damage, 40 yard range incriments
Short Bow, 1 shot, 1d6 damage, 20 yard range incriments

handguns
snub nosed 38, 5 shos, 1d12 damage, 10 yard range incriments
"cheap" 9mm handgun, 8 shots, 2d6 damage, 15 yard range incriments (hi-point etc)
Standard 9mm handgun, 15 shots, 2d6 damage, 20 yard range incriments (glock, beretta, sig, whatever)
magnum revolver, 6 shots, 2d8 damage, 30 yard range incriments

SMGs
"cheap" 9mm submachinegun, 30 shots, 2d6 damage, 15 yard range incriments (Tec-9)
"standard" 9mm submachinegun, 30 shots, 2d6 damage, 40 yard range incriments
(MP5 and the like)

AK type assault rife, 30 shots, 3d6 damage, 50 yard range incriment (first incriment is only -1)
M-16 type assault rifle, 30 shots, 2d10 damage, 60 yard range incriments (first incriment is only -1)
Hunting rifle/sniper rifle, 5 shots, 3d8 damage, 100 yard range incriments (first 2 incriments is only -1)
Shotgun, 6 shots, 6d4 damage, 20 yard range incriments (, +2 to hit inside first range incriment, max X5 incriment)

Any time you can move, you can instead put in a single cartridge into revolver, hunting rifle, shotgun, OR put a mag into the other ones.

firing bursts = uses 3 shots, get +2 to hit, damage remains unchanged (the idea of fully automatic weapons isn't that you hit he target more times, but if you aim a litle off, and your first bullet goes 1 foot to the left, one of the other bullets coming behind it might get the target.)

you have to be reasonable who can access what weapons, otherwise everyone is a wizard with an AK-47

anyways, what we found out was that magic was still VERY important, but it was to do things other than cause damage

The basic wizard spells for lower level were NOT magic missle x3 they were
lvl 1: shield, grease, obscuring mist
lvl 2: hideous laughter, web, levitate
lvl 3: suggestion, invisibility sphere, and of course fireball

Big Finger Games makes a pdf called PostModern: Fantastic Classes that converts all of the core classes from the Player's Handbook and Expanded Psionics Handbook into 10-level Basic or Advanced Classes, if you're willing to fork over a little coin for somebody else having done all of the mathematical heavy lifting.

I've recently been running a campaign with core D&D rules but with the guns from d20 modern. Works fine.
