d20 modern miniatures question

I was wondering where I could get miniatures that would work with a d20 modern campaign. I'm planning on running a near future campaign. The closest I've been able to find are some heroscape figures, but they 1) don't have a lot of variety and 2) their bases don't fit in the square very well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dec 31, 2007 13:44:24 Heroclix's generic non-hero figures work, but they'll have the same base problems as your Heroscape ones. To solve the base problem, pop them off the bases and glue them on to smaller ones. You can get big bags of bases from GW or just find some 1" washers and spraypaint them black.

Otherwise, there is some Modern stuff out there. Old Glory's "Road Kill" line, Judge Dread minis, by I forget who... and many others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Dec 31, 2007 21:45:24 I swear by printable minis. For the cost any average single metal figure, you get a set of anywhere from 15 to 48 designs, and you can print as many of them as you like. Here are the sets I recommend for D20 Modern, Future, and Past:

However, if you just have to have something more solid, then here are some nice choices for metal minis that haven't been mentioned yet.

Rezolution from Aberrant Games - Mostly of a cyberpunk feel, there are some figures among the CSO faction in space opera power armor and Firefly-esque spacefaring Union Cavalry outfits.
Future Wars from Copplestone Castings - A wide assortment of Modern-day cops, MIBs, crooks, bikers, gun-bunnies, soldiers, terrorists, and mercenaries; with a few sci-fi designs like power-suit troopers, post-apocalyptic scavengers, zombies, UFO Greys, and Aliens/Predator/Terminator proxies.
Street Violence from Foundry - Lots of contemporary cops, SWAT cops, gansters, street thugs, psycho killers, mercenaries, hitmen, bounty hunters, outlaw bikers, detectives, gun-bunnies, civillian bystanders, and one 6-pack of characters in nifty Matrix-style leather catsuits and trenchcoats.
WarZone from Prince August Hobby Casting A competitor to Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 that has bounced from publisher to publisher, there are pantloads of nice sci-fi designs here, from space opera-era starship marines and war droids to post-apocalypse mutants and marauders. There's a tiny handful that could pass for modern-day figures, and the whole line is largely free of those deco-skulls that GW has to plaster all over every figure they make.
Pig-Iron Productions - Small but good-looking line of sci-fi infantry and vehicles.
Urban War from Urban Mammoth - Another 40K competitor, this is the latest edition of I-Kore's Void line. Lots of very nice sci-fi figures here, with many suitable for space opera or cyberpunk. Troopers in power armor, war droids, techno-gladiators, and some highly disturbing Brom-esque aliens.

And true, WizKids does make a lot of characters that can be re-used in even non-superhero based D20 Modern games. I recommend checking through the figure galleries for suitable targets before hunting randomly through all 23,000 HeroClix listings on eBay.

Jan 02, 2008 21:13:18 We use «Crimson Skies» pilot figurines by Wizkids for the characters. I had to change the bases of course.

You may also want to look at www.sjgames.com for there cardboard heroes collection. (Triangular fold)

Apr 23, 2008 18:48:50 Thanks to all that replied, especially MadKalnod for the very useful reply with hyperlinks.

I found the Disposable Heroes work nicely, since they come with 'flat' counters (2d top view only) that fit perfectly in the battlemap squares. That also saves all the cutting, folding and pasting, though I did mount them on cardboard to make them sturdier.

Heroscape also has some modern figures, including some neat covert ops types figures. They come already painted, though the bases are slightly larger than battlemap squares.

There is also a Judge Dredd series of minies that look like they'd be cool, though I haven't seen any personally.

update: 30mm similiar to games workshop miniatures, so i bought a bunch

One Monk Miniatures: This outfit makes sets of minis that are clearly meant to act as substitutes for GW's 40K figures, as they come in squads you can build whole armies with, and their Heroic Sci-Fi line features "Terra Force", "Zeroid Skelebots", and "Alien Hybrids" that look suspisciously like Imperial Guardsmen, Necrons, and Tyranids, respectively. I've only gotten their freebie samplers, but they're meant to be cut much more intricately than just rectangular A-frames or Triagonals from Arion, Dakkar, or Precis Intemedia's sets. Still, when cunningly put together in a manner that One Monk calls "2.5-D", they'd probably look pretty sweet. Except for the majority of the freebies, each set features the figures in pre-colored and uncolored versions, and they appear to have been drawn in Illustrator or a similar vector graphics program. Apr 26, 2008 18:01:27 Foundry do a range called "street violence" which contains a mix of various themed gangs, along with cops and squadies.
Horrorclix has some usful modern bits, including some modern versions of classic monsters (zombies, werewolves etc).

Future Wars from Copplestone Castings - A wide assortment of Modern-day cops, MIBs, crooks, bikers, gun-bunnies, soldiers, terrorists, and mercenaries; with a few sci-fi designs like power-suit troopers, post-apocalyptic scavengers, zombies, UFO Greys, and Aliens/Predator/Terminator proxies. Street Violence from Foundry - Lots of contemporary cops, SWAT cops, gansters, street thugs, psycho killers, mercenaries, hitmen, bounty hunters, outlaw bikers, detectives, gun-bunnies, civillian bystanders, and one 6-pack of characters in nifty Matrix-style leather catsuits and trenchcoats. WarZone from Prince August Hobby Casting A competitor to Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 that has bounced from publisher to publisher, there are pantloads of nice sci-fi designs here, from space opera-era starship marines and war droids to post-apocalypse mutants and marauders. There's a tiny handful that could pass for modern-day figures, and the whole line is largely free of those deco-skulls that GW has to plaster all over every figure they make. Pig-Iron Productions - Small but good-looking line of sci-fi infantry and vehicles. Urban War from Urban Mammoth - Another 40K competitor, this is the latest edition of I-Kore's Void line. Lots of very nice sci-fi figures here, with many suitable for space opera or cyberpunk. Troopers in power armor, war droids, techno-gladiators, and some highly disturbing Brom-esque aliens. And true, WizKids does make a lot of characters that can be re-used in even non-superhero based D20 Modern games. I recommend checking through the figure galleries for suitable targets before hunting randomly through all 23,000 HeroClix listings on eBay. #7 brokenoakleys Apr 23, 2008 18:48:50	Thanks to all that replied, especially MadKalnod for the very useful reply with hyperlinks. I found the Disposable Heroes work nicely, since they come with 'flat' counters (2d top view only) that fit perfectly in the battlemap squares. That also saves all the cutting, folding and pasting, though I did mount them on cardboard to make them sturdier. Heroscape also has some modern figures, including some neat covert ops types figures. They come already painted, though the bases are slightly larger than battlemap squares. There is also a Judge Dredd series of minies that look like they'd be cool, though I haven't seen any personally.

#9 madkalnod Apr 24, 2008 20:58:35	I found another source of downloadable and printable paper minis, here: One Monk Miniatures: This outfit makes sets of minis that are clearly meant to act as substitutes for GW's 40K figures, as they come in squads you can build whole armies with, and their Heroic Sci-Fi line features "Terra Force", "Zeroid Skelebots", and "Alien Hybrids" that look suspisciously like Imperial Guardsmen, Necrons, and Tyranids, respectively. I've only gotten their freebie samplers, but they're meant to be cut much more intricately than just rectangular A-frames or Triagonals from Arion, Dakkar, or Precis Intemedia's sets. Still, when cunningly put together in a manner that One Monk calls "2.5-D", they'd probably look pretty sweet. Except for the majority of the freebies, each set features the figures in pre-colored and uncolored versions, and they appear to have been drawn in Illustrator or a similar vector graphics program.
