Depending on the campaign, Department-7 might have federal authority, or it might be a state or local agency, or perhaps a private institution. In some campaigns, it might have an international scope thanks to ties to the United Nations or some global conglomerate. Department-7 might deal with homeland defense, law enforcement, espionage and intelligence, or counter terrorism. In some games, it might have a charter to investigate paranormal activity or alien incursions or dimensional displacement..." In Reality Folks, Department-7 is a D20 Modern Podcast for the D20 Radio network. That is dedicated only to diving into and promoting D20 Modern for the fun and love of the game. The Podcast is set for a bi-weekly run, with possible mini-casts once in a while. The hosts (Agents) are Vincent, Keith and Rick. Feel free to email them with questions at department7podcast@gmail.com. Now that you have seen this, forget that you have. Because Department-7 does not exist! |
| #2RagitsuJul 11, 2009 18:32:02 | Isn't "podcast" just a fancy term for MP3? |
| #3Bloodlust1997Jul 11, 2009 20:09:19 | lol guess you could say that... back to topic at hand...at least its something keeping focused on Modern and keeping it public....maybe drumming up more interest ![]() |
| #4trappedsliderJul 12, 2009 12:06:04 | Isn't "podcast" just a fancy term for MP3? A podcast is a series of digital computer files, usually either digital audio or video, that is released periodically and made available for download by means of web syndication. |

| #6Master_VegaJul 12, 2009 12:54:37 | So they're a series of MP3s or MPEGs. No, they're a factory that produces apple pies for whales. |
| #7trappedsliderJul 12, 2009 14:56:19 | :P So they're a series of MP3s or MPEGs. |
| #8TheRealOrionJul 12, 2009 15:45:49 | So they're a series of MP3s or MPEGs. They've been called that for a couple of years now. Is this the first you're hearing of it? Open question: who all's listened to any of these? Are they good? The only other gaming podcast I've ever heard have been kind of disappointing. |
| #9RagitsuJul 12, 2009 15:54:05 | Gotta love euphemisms . |
| #10Bloodlust1997Jul 12, 2009 19:48:05 | They've been called that for a couple of years now. Is this the first you're hearing of it? there is quite a few out there that is really really good, with good production values. |
| #11TheRealOrionJul 12, 2009 21:59:23 | Such as...? |
| #12gordjohnsonJul 13, 2009 3:53:04 | jesus, these guys just go on and on about the most obvious ****ing details of the classes. "the strong hero, uh, uh, you would want to maybe give him, uh, uh strength, and then maybe constitution and dexterity. you know, in case he gets hit" do they ever get to anything useful? perhaps something that you wouldn't know just by looking at the book for five to ten minutes? |
| #13RagitsuJul 13, 2009 5:26:10 | Glad I didn't waste my bandwidth on it. |
| #14Bloodlust1997Jul 13, 2009 18:43:11 | jesus, these guys just go on and on about the most obvious ****ing details of the classes. The first episode was a bit rough, excuse me for that. Class review are quite boring yes you are right, but they needed to be done. I am not starting anything, but if you'd like why don't you come on the cast and show everyone up and once you do, I can hand it over to you or shut it down. Far as I am concerned, at least some people are taking the time to keep a dead system in the eyes of most of the gaming community in a spotlight. |
| #15RagitsuJul 13, 2009 22:00:45 | Far as I am concerned, at least some people are taking the time to keep a dead system in the eyes of most of the gaming community in a spotlight. Not if they are doing so poorly. You may as well go Office Space on it at that point. |
| #16Bloodlust1997Aug 08, 2009 17:07:38 | Episode # 5 up, Advance classes. Department7.tk |
| #17finalascentAug 09, 2009 1:11:24 | I listened to shows 1 and 5 as much as I could stand, and I don't mean to rile you, but I have to agree with the sentiments expressed here, even for episode 5. First and foremost, cut the show down to 30 minutes. It's easy to stay with a television show for 60 minutes, but it's hard to stick with an audio show for that long. I suggest writing down your talking points as if you're giving a speech (which you essentially are). Also, you need to get deep into true character optimization. Currently, you're only scratching (or rather buffing) the surface. I suggest moving beyond the basics. Character optimization involves planning your character in advance at creation, so even 7th, 11th, and 20th levels all matter to those creating their character from scratch. Because it is all of what they invision for their character. If you're just talking about what everyone knows, then you're not going to gain an audience, but if you start talking about tricks to optimize a character, you will gain more interest. Review the d20 Character Optimization forum to find good information. There's plenty there. But when you do so, discuss just one class. You don't need to discuss every class. Save some for other episodes. Diversify. Also, if you have to break out the game book to get information or to base your discussion from, then it shows that you are ill-prepared. A good talk show host always has their questions ready, their talking points laid out, and anecdotes at their fingertips. There is no need to go into the whole history of each person's RPG experience. It's boring. I recommend interrupting such monologues to make the discussion more interactive. If you don't have anything to make the discussion of RPG history fun, then interrupt with different subject matter to divert away from the boring subject. And A little humor (real humor; sorry) wouldn't hurt. It currently makes me feel like I'm listening to 60 Minutes sans Andy Rooney and their interesting voices. Inside jokes are not funny. The podcast needs life and freshness. There's a reason why radio broadcasters use sound effects, get quirky, and digress with brief humorous anecdotes. You also need to break it up a little. Instead of an hour long dialog, you need to interrupt with field reports and special how-tos. You could also get someone to write an article, or look up a recent existing article, and then give it special attention, not talking about the numbers crunch, but what the article accomplishes and how it can be used. Find a post with an interesting topic on various d20 Modern forums (these forums and others) and discuss the points made from a neutral standpoint. Report on d20 Modern community events. Advertise online games in need of more members. Give game reports. Talk about d20 Modern products and where to find them. Interviews with fictional d20 Modern characters is corny, but people love stuff like that, especially if the character sounds cartoony and bigger than life. There's all sorts of ways to spruce up the show. If you want the traffic, then you need to think about such things. Two compliments I have for you is that you prevent dead air well and you're well spoken. Slow to start, though. I suggest getting excited about the game before starting the podcast. Perhaps blog about d20 modern subject right before the podcast to get your juices flowing. That's it for my keyboard diarrhea. |

I agree; I'm also glad that people are supporting Modern. My question for those who are critical is this: What questions and topics would you like to see addressed on the show? -Nate |
| #19nmcNov 20, 2009 1:56:57 | So I went looking for new episodes and all I could find was what looked like a placeholder page. Has this project died? -Nate |
| #20RagitsuNov 20, 2009 17:07:41 | Hopefully. |
| #21buzzxfNov 23, 2009 2:45:34 | It is dead. I am disappointed that it couldn't stay up, very sad. |
| #22nmcNov 26, 2009 20:03:28 | You have confirmation of this? -Nate |
| #23buzzxfDec 12, 2009 3:08:56 | Yes I do. Over at D20radio i pmed the head a while ago. He sadly informed me it was gone. Let me remind you this was quite a it ago. |
