Mar 13, 2008 16:52:27 Hey, everyone. I'm back with something new for everyone to download (finally). When I GM and work on projects for d20 Modern, I find that I frequently use stat blocks. Character sheets are pretty and fun to use, but when I need to look up a character's pertinent information quickly, nothing beats a big old chunk o' stats.

So, to that end, I am working on a spreadsheet that will auto-calculate a stat block for your characters. The first version is completely done, and I've already started to add some items from UA. Note that this is NOT A CHARACTER CREATOR. There are plenty of options already available for that. This is a form that will convert your character sheet to a stat block.

I created the spreadsheet in OpenOffice, and even though I've tested it in Excel, I haven't worked with it as much in that form. Feel free to test the sheets and give me any feedback you may have.

First, I'd want the cells to be a bit more cleary labelled. At first glance, I'm not sure what goes where. I have the same problem when I design my own character sheets. Not everyone thinks like me, so I have to really sign-post what goes where.

Second, in the drop-down menus, it would be great to an "over-ride" option of some kind.

I agree. Formatting is going to be one of the last things I'm going to do before I release a finished product. Right now, the spreadsheet is as basic as it could possibly be. I just want to make sure it works before I start adding so many bells and whistles that I can't get out of the rabbit hole if something needs changed.

You mean, so that you can put in your own class? That's a really simple fix, and it's one of the first things I'm going to add (along with more classes to choose from) when I get all the basic stuff finished. Thanks for the feedback.

This thread didn't get too much of a response when I started it, but hopefully there is some interest in this. Regardless, it's going to be really helpful for me, so I'm glad that I'm done with it. Feel free to ask any questions or offer up any feedback you may have.

Apr 01, 2008 23:02:47 Battles -- On the D20Modern Forum (one step back from here), double click on your thread's title, and then click "Stop" before the page goes away. You should be able to fix your thread that way... or at least it works for me.

Anyhow, the stat block creator... I'll need to try that out when I finally get around to installing Office onto my computer. >>

IMHO, you should get OpenOffice. It's free, and I think it's a lot better. Of course, it makes it a little difficult if you're using it to make a spreadsheet for masses that have MS, but the converter works really well; it only took me 20 minutes of fixing to get the Excel version working the same way.

Apr 02, 2008 1:47:46 The only reason people keep using MS Office is because (a) they know it and/or (b) they don't know that Open Office exists. Seriously, I cannot understand why someone would knowingly choose a product that's hundreds of dollars and only of middling quality (i.e., MS Office). Open Office is better functionality for free. I heard that there's a South American country that saved billions in the national coffers by switching all their computers over to open source. Nifty, eh?
