I tried a middle eastern campain once. I don't have the stats anymore but here are some of the ideas I used.
A local terrorist cell (Sons of Alah) is being commanded by a Dajinn.
A saudi oil baron is a Blue dragon in disguise, he is driving up the price of oil.
Iran's religous leadership are being decieved by a false prophet, it is a Balor in disguise.
Some terrorist bombers is actually bearded devils, they suiside bomb because if they kill themselves they can just reform elsewhere, and the rest of the normal terrorists think that they've "given their life for the cause"
Angels walk among the citizanry disguised as regular but kind people. (UN aid workers, the occasional kind soldier, teachers, community activists)
Gnolls pull mercinary work for anyone willing to pay (think blackwater)
a good portion of the Israli military are actually dwarves.
Orcs live in the mountianous tribal areas and make great fodder in the many conflicts.
God himself does not give special favor any of the major religons, he favors the individuals not their causes. (exceptions apply like an aid mission to feed starving children)
the standard D&D dieties are almost never seen here.

you people got any ideas

I SWEAR I have read something similar before. Now if I could just remember where.

My idea? Read the Q'uran. Seriously, religious texts are awesome source material. They're full of fantasy stories, right? (I feel that way about the Christian Bible too, just to be clear) It's only a couple of hundred pages and you can probably skip most of the "begots" and lists of rules. Just read for the stories and then extrapolate. Also, read some current-events stuff about the Mid-East. I swear to Bob Almighty, reality provides more source material than any gaming manual ever could.

Were you looking for something more specific?

If so, what you're talking about reminds me of a game I played last year. The GM (a friend of mine, Dan) created a little conspiracy in which a supervillain tried to steal the Sphinx. I know, wacky as all get out. It was awesome. It turns out that the Sphinx is an object of remarkable mystical power, and the villain had built (I love this) a giant fighting robot that the Sphinx would be loaded into. It would form the head of the robot. So the first encounter was finding how they had tunnelled under the Sphinx in order to lift it from below into a waiting space ship (I know, it just gets more and more awesome) and then fly it to the Moon (see? awesome). We find a warp gate (or something), and end up on the Moon, dealing with 1/5 gravity, having a big fight where we make huge leaps inside this geodesic dome they've built on the Moon, and battle the giant robot with the Sphinx head.

Man, I want to play that again.
