I'll be running a pulp-era campaign with some occult overtones one of these days, and have decided that the only spellslingers I want are the Occultist, and the Spiritualist though I am entertaining the idea of allowing characters to undergo a rigorous quest to swap those levels out for Acolyte/Mage levels. I think I may leave the Scientist as strictly an NPC class, and I'm still on the fence about psionics, with the strong inclination to just leave them out.

That being said, I'd like a class - we'll call it the Alchemist - whose primary focus is brewing potions, scribing sigils (essentially tattoos,) and performing incantations. While it may not exactly be the ticket in a pulp campaign, it could come in handy in the future.

From the get-go, I'm tempted to use the Scientist as a base for the class, changing the requirements as necessary, and modifying the class features. Adding a craft XP reserve feature to replace things like extreme machine.

Now I've got a class that can, XP-willing, brew potions until the leucrotta come home, and out-ink LA Ink.

Insofar as the incantations side of the class, I'm considering features that allow the Alchemist to eschew certain amounts of the requirements - be it some focus, time, or even secondary casters; as well as have some defense against the inevitable backlash.

I guess I'm asking for a bit of insight, or help on the matter.
