Does the Combat Martial Arts feat prevent attacks of opportunity when doing stuff like tripping or grappling (which presumably provoke in the first place because you do them unarmed)? Why or why not?

Yes, you are considered Armed stauts with your unarmed strikes
additionally, you Threaten to take AoO on others

I've never actually thought about that before. So that means that if you have CMB, then the only benefit of Imp Trip/Disarm/etc. is that it grants a +4. Huh. That doesn't seem right, somehow.

Not really
It removes the AoO an opponant will take for your emptyhanded attacks
by making your emptyhanded attacks count as Armed.

If you try an armed Trip, they get an AoO.
If you try an Armed Imp Trip, they dont.
But an Unarmed Imp Trip will draw an AoO,
Unless it is a CMA Unarmed Imp Trip ;)

Further
If you are emptyhanded, you dont threaten, so you cant AoO someone Tripping you.
But CMA makes your emptyhands count as Armed, and Threatening, so you do get to AoO a Trip on you.

So you're saying that an Unarmed Trip attempt will provoke an Attack of Opportunity even if you have Improved Trip because you're essentially making an Unarmed Strike without Combat Martial Arts? The Trip doesn't provoke (because of Imp Trip), but the Unarmed Strike does.

Just to be pedantic, does that mean if you don't have either CMA or Imp Trip, then you provoke two Attacks of Opportunity, one for the Trip attemp and one for the Unarmed Strike? Or don't Attacks of Opportunity "stack"?

yes. No AoO for the Trip, but that ImpTrip feat dont stop the AoO for unarmed.

One activity can only provoke 1 AoO per threatener.
However it can provoke for multiple reasons, each needs to be addressed to prevent the provoke

Just like the nightmare of AoO for someone making a provoking AoO.... remember the Semi-Dead Cat in the Armoiure

Check the archive for the Armouir thread
It covers Suprise, ReadiedAction, AoO and Interupt, and damage for a cat as an improvised Ranged Weapon. It wanders a bit, but gets to the dead cats eventually

How about a Feat that requires Improved Initiative, Combat Martial Arts, and maybe a few others to allow a Player to make a counter Reflex/attack/defend against the one attacking them in melee...... its feasible I think, just would need hashing out the details

If you really want to get a lot of detail out of unarmed fighting, I recommend Ken Hood's "Skills and Feats Martial Arts System."
