In my last game the players were supposed to gather some easy info on the location of an NPC, but instead blitzed me by going to another (more difficult) source for the information and impressively role playing through the situation. Should I have just assigned the information a CR to uncover and award the XP based on that or should I award it based on the situation they got themselves into? |

If they have to pry information from an unfriendly CR4 thug, they get XP for defeating a CR4 menace. If the thug is a little more willing to help, they might get less XP. If they kill the thug that they're interrogating (without due reason), I might give them none, or even an XP penalty. |
