| #1zombiegleemaxApr 15, 2008 20:29:40 | I keep seeing complaints about the gadgets system, so I thought I'd put this idea out there. I'm not sure if this has already been posted, so sorry if I'm making a redundant thread. Each item has at least one gadget slot. single-hand weapons like pistols or stun batons have only a single barrel or blade slot, while larger two-hander weapons like rifles or greatswords have two barrel or blade (possibly handle) slots. Ammunition also has a single gadget slot. Some gadgets may be swapped out for others, though most are permanent. The call is up to the GM which can and cannot be replaced. What do you guys think? |
| #2doomsoughtApr 15, 2008 20:48:10 | that really isn't necessary, the gadget system is already balanced, it has an increase in purchase DC if you look at the chart 7-16 on D-20 future you will notice it is pretty much logarithmic. your average gun is Dc 14-16 thats 350-650 dollars up that by six (20-22) that is 2000-3500 Dollars My miniturized Recoiless is DC 22 + 5 = 27 thats $15,000, from a $3,500 gun, almost 3 times as expensive you get what you pay for. |
| #3zombiegleemaxApr 15, 2008 21:05:08 | Yes, but you see, I had a railgun that dealt 5d12 damage with a single round, and had around a +5 to its accuracy. It also had a burst-fire mode so I could pump the damage up to 7d12 when I needed it. Granted this was later on in the game, and the gun cost an arm and a leg, but I couldn't hit anything without triggering MAS... While I thought (and still think) that was freakin' awesome, some people on this board cringe at it. This is for those people. I personally like my anti-tank railgun. :D Thank you for the feedback, though. |
| #4SkrittiblakApr 22, 2008 12:55:33 | I like your proposal, but I still don't like the principle of the gadget system. That is to say that if I go in a shop today I can buy, say, a Desert Eagle. I can't buy a Desert Eagle with Autofire Gadget. If some day IMI releases a fully automatic version of the Desert Eagle it still wouldn't be a Desert Eagle with Autofire Gadget, it would be an IMI Automatic Eagle. My point is that I am restricted in my purchasing based on what is actually available. I can't just mix and match technology to completely customize my firearm. The gadget system looks like a useful 'tool' for the GM to create new weapons and give them appropriate Wealth DCs, but for the player they should simply not be an option. Players can customize weapons if they have the Engineer class, which I think allows you to turn weapons into Masterwork weapons and maybe do a few other cool things, but generally Players should not have free reign to devise any weapon of their liking using only cost (or even gadget slots as a cap). The GM should make the available weapons known at the outset. Custom weapons should be the domain of wealthy eccentric billionaires and BBEGs. |
| #5doomsoughtApr 22, 2008 18:35:15 | and that takes us back to rule zero: the GM decides. |
| #6zombiegleemaxApr 23, 2008 12:21:44 | Well, by the time my crew started getting gadgeted weapons, we were wealthy, eccentric, billionaire mercenaries. Of course, that was the fault of our GM for separating us from our wealth for extended periods of time. :P Also, I really dislike the way the Engineer classes weapon modifications work, what with the one in ten chance of the modified weapon breaking every time it's used. We had two people with the Engineer class in my group's last serious D20Future campaign, and no one ever touched the weapon modification class feature because 1/10 every attack is too large a risk to be worth it. Now, if the Engineer were allowed to apply gadgets to a weapon, THAT would be cool. |
| #7nobodez_hereApr 23, 2008 15:46:25 | The GM should make the available weapons known at the outset. Custom weapons should be the domain of wealthy eccentric billionaires and BBEGs. Perhaps my campaigns are odd, but in all the ones I've played from 1st onwards, by the time we hit 10th level, we were Wealthy, Eccentric Billionaires. A Mastercraft +3 Minigun, not a problem, a pair of custom, armored, armed, and computerized SUVs, didn't even have to roll the dice to see if we could buy it. We just did. Plus, if you play with the more eccentric rules (UA for instance), you can have really amazing magic items as well. +1 Thundering Concussive Burst MC +3 Miniguns? Sure, why not? Sure, there's some XP loss, but that just means we can adventure longer before hitting that glass ceiling at 20th level. |
| #8doomsoughtApr 23, 2008 16:53:32 | Also remember that the players are the HEROES they are what everybody else looks up to (or fears) Remember that the typical level of an ordinary only gets to level ten when they are venerable (retired) the players are above average. What kind of hero would batman be if he didn't have all those cool gadgets? Or James Bond? "Real" has nothing to do with it. |
