| #2kjakanApr 01, 2008 7:55:32 | Does any of your players have any rules experience? -K |
| #3TheRealOrionApr 01, 2008 10:47:26 | Where to begin: Come up with a villain character and/or a set of obstacles (could be natural, could be result of a disaster, whatever). For a villain, give him/her/them some kind of motivation, something they want and would harm people to get. Then find a way to reveal the villain to your heroes. They will (probably) move to stop them. From there, just let it play out. Place your villain(s) and your heroes in the space and watch 'em fight. It's like putting bees in a jar. For a set of obstacles, you need to pay more attention to setting. Create a space in which the heroes have to defeat or surpass those obstacles. You'll want to concentrate on the exact details of the space in which they're going to operate, like a small neighbourhood or a building. Don't write an "ending." Rememer, it's not a story, it's an adventure. It's the job of the players to come up with the ending. It's the job of the DM come up with the setting, the obstacles/villain, and the premise. Lastly, when it comes to designing a game, you want to stick to published material, at least initially. Use monsters/villains out of the Menace Manual, grab settings and maps from the Wizards' d20M area (I think those are still up?). If you can get your hands on a full module, go for it. GMing is a lot of work. Having some of that work done for you is a blessing. Mix and match to your heart's content, but go ahead and take it. |
| #4terjonwhApr 08, 2008 9:39:08 | Have each player come up with something traumatic that just happened to their character that they cannot ignore that sets them into motion. Some good examples are: I just returned from a business trip and while unpacking I discovered I grabbed the wrong suitcase. This suitcase if full of money. I woke up and discovered my family was butchered while I slept. My partner was gunned down by some random person as he was walking to the station. Tell them not to worry about the why of the situation or who is responsible. That all comes later. Once you have this just throw situations out there for them to deal with as they try to deal with the world that was just turned upside down on them. The players should also come up with the reason their characters are together now. Start with the conclusion they are together and cooperating then work backwards from there. Skip all the angsty getting to know each other can I trust you why are these people together B.S. That all happened in the past. It's background. (None of this is original thinking on my part. I stole it all.) |
