How do you generate character abilities?

I'm thinking of using this system to generate characters for my next campaign instead of the point system in the core book. Its fast and simple:

Player receives +6 in ability bonuses he can distribute as he wishes. Negative penalties to abilties can be taken to raise the value of other bonuses at the rate of 1 for 1, but total bonuses can never exceed +6.

[edit]No ability can be raised over 18. 3 abilities must have odd numbers and the 3 other even numbers[/edit]

Exemple : 17 (+3) / 15 (+2) / 10 (+0) / 12 (+1) / 12 (+1) / 09 (-1) = +6 in bonuses.

Example 1st level halfling Rogue:

STR 1 (-5)
CON 1 (-5)
DEX 38 (+14)
INT 1 (-5)
WIS 1 (-5)
CHA 38 (+14)
(after racial bonuses)

Whats a rogue?Tongue out Is that combo of fast and some other class? O_o

What we do for our d20 modern games is roll a d20 and numbers between 8 and 18 are taken, with 19 and 20 being an auto 18

OMFG, I didn't even look at what board this was on. I just assumed it was D&D-related.

I'm guessing that my method must be either too hard for the general public to play or too basic but I use the following set of numbers.

10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
put'em where you want'em

I have varied it to 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16 sometimes and have even allowed the players to pick which ever set they liked.

Heroic is behavior not stats. Want a real challenge? Play a PC where the total of the stat mods equal zero.

STR1, INT 1, WIS 1?... I would have so much fun with you. OMG you would get ride of that character halfway through the first session...LOL

Okay, I've thought about for a bit and I've decided.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

3 even ability stats and 3 odd ability stats and the ability mod total must equal 6.

Billy is smart, really smart (Int:18) and can stay calm under pressure (Wis:12) but is a bit of a geek (Cha:9) of course. Vid-Gamer. So, he's got pretty fair reflexes (Dex:15), hand-eye, etc. Otherwise, he's rather normal (Str:11,Con:10).
