| #1RagitsuDec 04, 2007 8:33:42 | Inspired by the up-and-coming movie I am Legend: what would your level 5 character build (32 point buy) be to survive all by themselves? You can use material from d20 Modern and d20 Apocalypse, but no magic/psionics/mutations or alien/supernatural stuff. Also, pick a primary and secondary weapon (Firearm or otherwise. No vehicles...yet). And you'll need a place to live -> where would you be? Finally, a short list of reasons why this build is optimal would be nice. |
| #2tael_zenithDec 05, 2007 17:26:19 | First thing is first; This isn't a Survival build, this is me hypothetically surviving the apocalypse and what i expect I'll have and become. Tael Zenith: Smart Hero 2, Tough Hero 3; Medium human; HD 2d6 + 3d10 +3; hp 29; Mas 14; Initiative +2; Spd 30ft; Defense 15 , touch 15, flatfooted 13; BAB +3; Grap +4; Atk: +4 Melee (1d4+2, MW knife) or +6 Ranged (1d8+1, Compound Bow) or +5 Ranged (2d10 Remington 700); FS 5ft.; Reach 5ft.; SV Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +6; AP 15; Rep +1; Strength 12, Dexterity 15, Constitution 11, Intelligence 15, Wisdom 16, Charisma 9. Occupation: Blue Collar (class skills: Craft: Structural, Mechanical, Drive) Skills: Computer Use +6, Craft (Chemical) +4, Craft (Mechanical) +10, Craft (Structural) +10, Drive +4, Know (Earth and Life Science) +7, Know (History) +4, Know (Current Events) +4, Know (Tactics) +4, Know (Technology) +4, Know (Theology and Philosophy) +4, Know (Physical Science) +6, Navigate +7, Profession +7, Repair +3, Spot +4, Survival+11 Feats: Archaic Weapon Proficiency, Endurance, Improved Damage Threshold, Simple Weapon Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Compound Bow) Talent (Smart Hero): Plan Talents (Tough Hero): Robust, Stamina Possessions: Compound Bow, Remington 700, SAS Survival Guide, MW Knife, 10 Arrows, Backpack, Tactical Map, Standard Binoculars, Flashlight. Residence: Subterranean residential converted shipping container. So Thats my take on it. What would YOU become to survive? . . . . . |
| #3RagitsuDec 05, 2007 20:27:11 | Huh, that's pretty close to my initial build. To not be a copycat, this is what I also considered. --- Ragitsu: Smart Hero 3 / Dedicated Hero 2; Medium human; HD 6d6 + 12; hp 34; Mas 14; Initiative +2; Spd 30ft; Defense 15 (+2 Dex, +3 Class) , touch 15, flatfooted 13; BAB +2; Grap +3; Atk: HK PSG-1 +6 (2d10, 20/x2) Beretta 92 +4 (2d6, 20/x2) Knife +3 (1d4+1, 19-20/x2) FS 5ft.; Reach 5ft.; SV Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +6; AP 15; Rep +2; Strength 12, Dexterity 14, Constitution 15, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 15, Charisma 10. Occupation: Athlete (Climb, Jump, Swim) Skills: Climb +7, Craft (Chemical) +8, Craft (Mechanical) +8, Craft (Structural) +11, Jump +7, Knowledge (Earth and Life Sciences) +8, Knowledge (History) +6, Knowledge (Popular Culture) +4, Knowledge (Technology) +8, Listen +6, Repair +11, Search +8, Spot +7, Survival +10, Swim +7 Feats: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Endurance, Far Shot, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Simple Weapons Proficiency, Track, Weapon Focus (HK PSG-1) Talents: Smart Hero -> Savant (Craft: Structural), Savant (Repair) Dedicated Hero -> Skill Emphasis (Survival) Possessions: HK PSG-1 with sling, Beretta 92, hip-holster, knife, backpack, canteen, notepad and pencil. --- Location of home: Downtown bookstore near the supermarket (saving the non-perishable goods first, of course). Barricade the entrances downstairs (but keeping one hidden for out of the way access). Day to day activities: Sit up on the roof, scope out the immediate street area and shoot anything that's large and vicious. Occasionally head to the river that's close by and fish to stave off boredom. Eventually try to find out how to clone from strands of hair (and pray I don't get a sociopath's). |
| #4tael_zenithDec 05, 2007 20:35:28 | Niiiccce. I also considered Dedicated, but decided to go with more of a tough survival, cause I have most of the knowledge already. I just need to use and refine it. The apoc (which I have started planning for) sitution I have has everything i can get in a lowish cost. (hence the shipping container) and possibly even an electrical generator, hence my Mechanical and Repair. Climb and such I left out because I plan to be in the plains, not navigating too rough of terrain. Then I also tried to keep it as real as possible, which is why it took me 3 or so hours to make me. All in all, I am displeased with my profession, but thats what you get with your first job. >.< Though I dont see a use your your Archaic Weaps Prof, whats that for? |
| #5RagitsuDec 05, 2007 21:00:30 | Brawl is mostly useless (i'm not going to knock out a bear or deer), but finding a longsword or compound bow could come in handy if ammunition or spare parts run low for the rifle. Something both of our builds are missing is Treat Injury. I noticed you have Stamina, which is good, but some damage can't simply be healed away. ![]() I guess my guy doesn't need physical character levels due to the relatively safe and confined area he lives in. That's partially why he has that heavy a** weapon as well. I also forgot about the vehicles in the garage (though that would be a significant amount of maintenance). |
| #6tael_zenithDec 05, 2007 21:37:54 | Brawl may have its uses if there are other survivors. Though in I Am Legend No Melee attack is a good idea. Treat Injury is a heavy investment, right off you have to think -4 for improper materials. I Think I can manage enough with my -1; or +3 if I have a few 1stAid kits at base. |
| #7RagitsuDec 05, 2007 21:45:34 | True, but this event will involve just you and nature. Unless you want to get Brawl for Improved Grapple. And you're right about Treat Injury. It would be a heavy investment, but the piece of mind would be worth it. I suppose you got Knowledge (Theology and Philosophy) for bits of holy scripture and famous sayings to live by? I'm also curious, when would Drive come into play? What would you have in mind for a schedule? |
| #8tael_zenithDec 05, 2007 22:58:16 | Drive is just 2 ranks of experience (I know if that much) that i have or will get from now till then. Theo/Phil is to reflect what i know about ethics and whatnot, would help with dealing with people (my build is for other Apocs too); but not invested in since that isn't part of my Apoc 'To do' list. Morning: Check and gather from Potato patch. Inspect Generator. Prepare Breakfast and lunch Midday: Take lunch, Hunt, Look for signs of infected*, Explore. Evening: Hightail back to camp lock up both entrances, Dinner and reading, sleep. * (If in I Am Legend) Very important as I dont think the infected would be out as remote as i am, I'd need advanced warning Via corpses or tracks. |
| #9RagitsuDec 05, 2007 23:17:02 | Vehicle of choice? :D |
| #10tael_zenithDec 06, 2007 0:32:40 | Feet. :D no gas stations in my area and I damn sure dunno how to ride any animal. Maybe a animal drawn cart though. |
| #11jaidDec 06, 2007 17:24:30 | why not a bicycle? |
| #12joshy676Dec 06, 2007 18:21:30 | I've got a nice survivor build -- this is a "crazy-guy-who-knew-the-end-of-humanity-was-coming" kind of build. Being fifth level, I assumed he'd been living in this "I am Legend" scenario for a small amount of time, and in that time he's accumulated quite a bit of stuff. Josh Smart Hero 3 / Tough Hero 2 Male Human Str 13 (+1) Dex 13 (+1) Con 14 (+2) Int 16 (+3) Wis 12 (+1) Cha 10 (+0) HD 3d6+6 + 2d10+4 +2 (HP 38) Mas 14 Init +1 BAB +2 Grap +3 Attacks: HK G3 (Atk +0; Dmg 2d10; Crit 20; Rng 90), Beretta 92F (Atk +0; Dmg 2d6; Crit 20; Rng 40), Knife (Atk +0; Dmg 1d4+1; Crit 19-20) Defense 14 (T 14, FF 13) (class +3, Dex 1) Fort: +5 Ref: +2 Will: +3 Occupation: Creative (Knowledge (Art); Craft (Writing); Perform (Act)) Talents: Plan (DC 10, bonus 6), Robust (bonus 2 hp), Savant (Craft) (Pharmaceutical) +3) Skills: Climb +4, Computer Use +6, Concentration +4, Craft (Pharmaceutical) +10, Craft (Visual Art) +9, Craft (Writing) +10, Disable Device +7, Investigate +7, Knowledge (Art) +11, Knowledge (Current Events) +8, Knowledge (History) +7, Knowledge (Popular Culture) +10, Knowledge (Streetwise) +8, Knowledge (Tactics) +7, Knowledge (Technology) +7, Knowledge (Theology and Philosophy) +7, Listen +3, Research +7, Search +8, Spot +7, Survival +4. Feats: Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Alertness, Educated: Knowledge (Art) & Knowledge (Popular Culture), Personal Firearms Proficiency, Quick Reload, Simple Weapons Proficiency. Possessions On-hand: Beretta 92F, Box magazine x2 (1 for the 92F, 1 for the G3), Casual Outfit, Duct tape x4, HK G3, Hip Holster, Knife, HK G3, Mesh vest. Other Possessions Ammo (7.62mm) x100, Ammo (9mm) x200, The Anarchist's Cookbook, Box Magazine x4 (2 HK G3, 2 92F), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Collection, Jeep Wrangler, various foodstuffs, The Zombie Survival Guide. Place of Residence: The entire 3rd floor of a 3-floor apartment building (5 3-room apartments per floor) in New York, New York. Spends the Day: When he's not foraging (and being an artist before the "apocalypse"), he spends his daytime sketching and writing about the things he saw the night before. He is highly successful in hacking gas station computers to allow the gasoline to be pumped. Personal Problems: He has a small case of Shell Shock (PTSD), possibly stemming from spending the first night while high on LSD. Yes, it has balance issues AND it fits an oddly specific theme. But the feel is what I'm trying for. How does it feel? |
| #13tael_zenithDec 06, 2007 19:39:02 | why not a bicycle? Haha! I forgot about those! I Think bike is definatly the best idea for simplicity You win! I Can see the end of my movie already, after so many months of no sign of the infected, he begins to neglect searching. One evening he misses the tracks going into his dark underground lair. When he ventured down into the cramped quarters he doesn't even have the time too draw his rifle and the population falls to 0. And joshy676 Your guy would do well enough in the early game, but without survival or a good attack bonus, he's pretty humped when the supermarket food spoils. From what me can gather from The Protagonists routine from the trailers, your build wouldn't last as long as Smith. He just doesn't have the Survival or Attack Bonus to deal with fending for himself. Though you listed his Attack bonus wrong, it Should be +3 Ranged and Melee |
| #14joshy676Dec 06, 2007 20:58:33 | Your guy would do well enough in the early game, but without survival or a good attack bonus, he's pretty humped when the supermarket food spoils. Well, it is a work-in-progress sort of character. Something like that can come from more levels -- that is, if he lives long enough. The BAB thing is what I get for using the Modern Heroes spreadsheet instead of crafting it by hand like I should've been doing. |
| #15RagitsuDec 07, 2007 2:25:34 | Double checking is good, but there's nothing wrong with the Modern Heroes Excel spreadsheet. It hasn't steered me wrong once on attack bonus calculation or BAB...![]() --- I can see a solitary character surviving on an oil rig or small, yet isolated island. Would be an interesting build to see. Who knows? Though we set out to make characters that live alone, these guys could be interesting "survivor man" types to meet in an apocalyptic campaign. One more thing: could an all physical class character build work? |
| #16joshy676Dec 07, 2007 6:58:51 | One would think a physical build would work. The only issue I can see with it is that roleplaying would be a rather tedious operation, since you'd have to derive his/her personality from his/her description, without any stats to back it up. You'd probably also need to fill in things like speaking habits, phobias, interests, and pastimes. That way, at least he won't be bored. |

| #18farmboymdpDec 28, 2007 19:58:27 | I just finished reading I Am Legend last night, it was a great story! This would be me in that scenario (optimistically); I would definitely like to be one of those "isolated island" type, living in a simple shack by the beach. Occupation: Student (Knowledge [history], Knowledge [physical sciences], Research) Skills: Climb +5, Computer Use +8, Craft (structural) +6, Craft (visual art) +8, Craft (writing) +5, Knowledge (behavioral sciences) +4, Knowledge (earth and life sciences) +6, Knowledge (history) +11, Knowledge (physical sciences) +8, Knowledge (pop culture) +7, Knowledge (theology and philosophy) +7, Listen +4, Move Silently +3, Navigate +6, Research +6, Search +4, Spot +3, Survival +12, Swim +7, Treat Injury +6. (48 pts Smart, 27 pts Dedicated, 6 pts Strong) Feats: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Point Blank Shot, Simple Weapons Proficiency, Weapon Focus (bow). Talents: Smart Hero -> Savant (Craft [visual]). Dedicated Hero -> Skill Emphasis (Survival), Aware. Strong Hero -> Extreme Effort. Possessions: HK PSG-1 w/ silencer, Beretta 92 w/ silencer, hip-holster, compound bow, arrows (40), masterwork knife, backpack, 2 canteens, medical kit, multitool, binoculars, compass, windbreaker, two-person tent, notepad and pencil. --- Location of home: In a small shack on an isolated island in the Caribbean or the Pacific. This assumes I have done sufficient research to ensure the island could feed me indefinitely, via fish, shellfish, fruit, etc. It also assumes the island is not within smoke viewing distance of any other bodies of land. That is, smoke from a fire wouldn't be visible from the nearest land. Day to day activities: Get up, stoke the fire, go for a swim. Gather some fruits, catch some fish, or hunt whatever game might be on the island (if any). Patrol immediate coastline looking for ships or signs of vampire activity. Over time, build multiple shelters across island so long-term scouting/migration possible. The idea is to flee at the earlier signs of the vampire disease (because I'm already a pretty paranoid person when it comes to those things) for an island, as mentioned, as isolated as possible, preferably with my significant other (assuming she hasn't died as in the book). Additional equipment (estimated at about one small planeload of cargo) includes survival manuals, two kayaks, a case of ammo for each gun, some pots and pans, and other TBD items. |

| #23cpvestMar 21, 2008 9:02:08 | I've played this 2 times now, the first time was way back in the early 90's after reading the Graphic Novel and again a few years ago. The trick to running this game is to trap the players out after dark. Also I used the virus to alter people only partly so that some walked in the sunlight, and others were carriers (some could walk at night, most became crazy). With it being a virus it can have it mutate and create other forms of vampires, like the big beastly one I used in both games, along with altered bears and vampires with small amounts of Intellegence or some doing things they did in live. Then theres the other surviviers you can trade with or defend againest. The first game my players stayed in a small group, living in a small house and traded with other groups, where in the second game they began building a compond and planing for the future. They liked in enough that playing it again has already come up. |

| #30RagitsuApr 06, 2008 11:25:49 | M4A1s and various types of combat shotguns would be readily available. I would also try to snag a US M21, or the civilian equivalent Springfield M1A match for longer range work. MP-5 submachineguns should be available, as they are commonly used for Police SWAT and by the US Government. Light weight is ideal, as well as weapon reliability. And the availability of ammo is paramount. For a sidearm, I would prefer something in .45ACP, since ammo is common and it packs slightly more punch than 9mm Parabellum. It would be safer to carry two pistols, one primary and one backup, both loaded. Magazine capacity for the weapon is very important. Ideally, 10-12 rounds at least. Perhaps some USP variant. Something that struck me about the film is how useful suppressors would be on both the primary weapon and sidearms. I'm not sure though if the sale of suppressors is legal in NY, so you might not be able to scavenge one from a gun store. Odds are that after 3 years you could find a military one. I've also been wondering why Neville didn't set up more dedicated defenses. The explosive barrels were effective, but are one-use only kind of things. I think that fitting at least one M249 or M240 on each side of the upper story would prove a most effective countermeasure against those human wave attacks. That being said, i'd want a sturdy, reliable fallback weapon like an AK-47 or Thompson submachine gun. --- As for actual fortifications: Well, he had generators inside his house (gas powered I assume). While that in no way "guarantees" reliability, it would at least mean that the creatures would have no way of knocking out his power without getting inside first. If he had his entire yard (or general area outside his house) lit up with UV light, then the creatures probably couldn't even get close to his house, let alone get inside. A quick internet search shows me that they do in fact make UV flashlights, floodlights, etc. I'd be sure to have a couple of UV flashlights on me at all times. My house would be surrounded by mounted UV floodlights protected with some sort of hard, but transparent barrier. The inside of my house would have a switch or something I could throw to fill the inside with UV light (Obviously you wouldn't want that on all the time while you were sitting inside - but it would be good for emergencies). |
| #31doomsoughtApr 06, 2008 16:21:00 | Lonewolf the Hunter, He's got enough ranks in computer use and craft electronic to make it so. I'm fairly sure modern submarines have an autopilot by now any way, he'd just have to modify the program a bit and hook it up to his play station or something to the like. If he gets bored on his games, he would either write his own games, or modify the sub even more. |

| #34doomsoughtApr 27, 2008 11:06:19 | You mean from the I am legend movie, or book? they probably take the vampire template... with some special abilities lost and lowered LA. but my nuke-sub is good for anyone who doesn't have their own fast attack sub, or sub destroyers. really all I have to do is take a quick shortcut under the north pole, and flee to some fishing grounds in the Pacific. And the Pacific is big. I might work on the template later. |

Anyways, I think while a submarine or aircraft carrier might be okay in the short run, the maintenance might be a bit much for just one person. You'll end up spending your days just fishing and checking on key systems...and what happens if multiple problems crop up? True, this can happen at a stationary place, but you're not as SOL compared to being underwater or in the middle of the ocean. |
| #36lonewolf_the_hunterApr 27, 2008 22:41:43 | Anyone here have thoughts about the best fortifications against darkseekers? Actualy that's kind of why I listed that my build never beds down in the same place, Defense is my weakness, in stratagy game (board or Comouter) I get my ass kicked if I don't strike first, sorry wander off track were was I, oh yeah, well there's a good sized National Gaurd base here so when I was swiping the M4 carbine I'd probibly grab as many Claymores as I could and a "how to" manual (Unless between now and the apocolypse they publish a Military explosives edition of the "For Dummies" books). |
| #37cpvestApr 28, 2008 10:45:53 | You don't need a "for Dummies" book, most U.S. Army vehicles and equipment have a panel with directions, so if your reading the claymores directions its facing the right way. If your character plans on getting a Humvee all he needs is a pair of bolt cutters for the wire cable that holds the steering wheel in place. For a tank you use the bolt cutters for the door padlock, once inside get all of the other keys for the vehicle, most soldiers only carry the door key. Don't forget to get all the vehicles equipment in the storge building thats normally right behind it. Hows that for easy. Sorry, U.S. Army your security sucks. |

Thanks for telling me, so I guess the Clymore in the even more modern WE should include a note to the effect of, "Can make Demolitions checks untrained with this weapon" not that it makes scense for Demolitions to be a trained only skill I mean when you get right down to it any idiot can plant a bomb, having ranks in Demolitions would just mean you do it right more often. |
| #39RagitsuMay 03, 2008 14:54:53 | The true flaw I find with Demolitions is that just because you know how to set C4 doesn't mean you know how to disable a binary liquid bomb, etc. |
| #40doomsoughtMay 04, 2008 9:30:22 | simple: setting a bomb and not getting yourself blown up is untrained. reversing this is not, or has a -4 non-proficiency penalty. Also the DC on that would be high enough that it would be suicide without ranks anyway. |
| #41RagitsuJul 09, 2009 23:09:53 | I am Bump. |
| #42Master_VegaJul 10, 2009 0:56:02 | I am a bit tired to post a stat sheet myself right now, but I'll try to tomorrow. I know I had a "me" sheet somewhere... On a side-note: when running a zombie/vampire apocalypse game, be extra careful if the players are playing as themselves. My friends and I utterly destroyed the plot of a zompocalypse game in the first session by... well... knowing more about the location/physics/social situations than the GM did. Worst of all, we broke it before we even saw a zombie. >_< Of course playing the World of Darkness system may have had something to do with it, but still... |
