However, since this board deals with d20 Modern, I figure it most appropriate to ask here. Is it possible for someone to be immune to fear and/or intimidation in real life, and if so, what are some examples of them attaining it? |

| #3rhialtoMar 08, 2009 3:59:58 | Yep, you'd have to be immune to feat (or immune to embarrassment at least) to wear that. |

I remember watching a series of videos on some guy who was a mob hit man who had complete ambivalence about the work he did merely because he didn't feel fear. And he did some pretty messed up stuff to people... |

Military training is geared towards achieving something close to that; to go against the natural impulse to flee in front of mortal danger. As a former reserve infantry guy I can tell you you actually get used to hearing real gun fire very close to you. Deep down you are still afraid but the conditioning takes over. I do not believe people become immune to fear they just are more resistant to it. The breaking point is harder to reach. On the other hand if one suffers from a psychiatric condition the person may indeed be immune to fear. These people generally do not live very long lives... In game terms I would give skill bonus for any kind of military or paramilitary training OR you could simply argue that since the «heroes» are constantly facing danger they get a bonus against fear equal to half their character level. |
| #7RagitsuMar 08, 2009 20:22:50 | Since when does being immune to fear also make one stupid ? You can knowingly not enter into a suicidal situation, even if you aren't shaken up with fear. |
| #8penchantMar 08, 2009 23:08:50 | Fearlessness can be a result of certain types of psychosis. It can be congenital or aquired through bacterial, viral or traumatic influences on the brain. However, someone who is truly fearless would exhibit a host of other anti-social behaviors since they never develop the kinds of social barriers that negative consequences create and many become serial killers or politicians. |
