Is is just me, or does the Gamble skill not make a whole lot of sense? It seems to be written with cards in mind. What about other games that are played for cash? Things like pool, horse racing, dice, and even two on two basketball are all commonly bet on.

What is the general concensus? Is there one? What does Gamble cover and what doesn't it? What is the best way to adjucate things that aren't covered by Gamble?

A quick skim tells me that you're basically right.

I think the point of the skill is that it covers more than just one bet at a time. "Gamble" is meant for a night at the casino or for throwing dice.

Let me put it this way: Gamble is to placing a bet as Diplomacy is to Bluff. Individual bets are on your own head. If you place money on a single game, then you can either lose or win that money. If you "play the ponies" all day, then you can use the Gamble skill.

The big question in my mind is how to adjucate various other games of chance. Things like...

1. Darts- My gut instinct is to base this on attack rolls. You're basically "attacking" the board with the darts, right? The best attack roll would decide the winner.

2. Basketball- I could see all 3 physical attributes helping out, but where does skill and/or experience come in?

3. Pool- Total blank

Any ideas?

i would say that gamble is for generic "i want to make some extra WB"... if the PC was in a contest of some kind then it would be the appropriate roll...

thats how i do it...

So Gamble should be used for the above contest?

There are also time when the stake isn't money. Anybody remember the basketball scene in Escape from NY?

Roulette, Keno, slot machines, and other games you find in casinos, these are games of chance.
Do it once: you place your bet and win or lose with the result. Although with the abstract way wealth works in Modern, I'd bet for something other than money.
Do it for an hour: make gambling check to see what your winnings are

Darts, basketball, pool, etc. these are games of skill. Participating in one of these is not gambling. If a PC wished to participate in one of these activities, I would have them make contested Skill, Ability or Attack rolls to determine the out come. One if you just want a quick determination or many if you want to highlight the back and forth nature of the contest.

Yeah, there's huge difference between betting in a game and betting on a game. "Gambling" is, again, a casino skill. It's about playing games of chance. Participating in a round of pool or a darts competition relies on a whole different set of skills. Now if you were watching a darts competition and making bets with other spectators, then you might use Gamble to simulate your successes or failures over the course of the night.

I've done a revision of the Gamble skill (link is in my sig), but the focus was specifically on card games.
I agree with Melichor. For something like Darts, it'd simply be a straight up ranged-attack competition with a set of Defense scores for each target area on the board.
