I am designing a d20 modern campaign set in a post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland. I need to make a huge wasteland map, a large abandoned base, a large city, a few towns, ect. I want to find a map maker I can use to design these but have been having trouble finding something for modern.

Does anyone know where I can find a free one? If such a thing exists

Unfortunately, stuff like that is apparently hard to come by. How about Google Earth and Photoshop (or Paint.NET or whatever)?

Good old grid/graph paper... some places sell the big sheets, check art supply stores.

I use the big sheets for general maps of the topography and where the city is located and smaller sheets for city mapping and building plans.

finding maps for post apocalyptic settings is one of my quests of the last couple of days.. i've found enough scenery pictures and even went to desolated places to make my own pictures... but maps...

i'm thinking of using the fallout 3 editor or maybe the fallout tactics editor to get Some maps.. maybe some dungeons and dragons maps with photoshop skills could do something...

my quest shall continue and i'll keep you up to date... hope you do the same ;)

P.S. Rustam1: although the links you've send are helpfull in some ways, i can't really use them for map making...

It seems that the game 'The Fall: Last days of Gaia' also has an inbuild map editor which could be usefull.. i don't have the game yet so i don't know, but i think it's in the budget area, so i'll let you know.

and learning a map editor might take time... but looking for maps that aint there as well..

well, this is what i was able to do with the fallout 2 editor... this is just a map of an already existing map but i found out the editor isn't that hard to do... thing is, i'm working on an old laptop with pad (no mouse) which makes it all bit hard... but still, i was able to make my own map a bit..
fallout 2 map

with a single click you can turn on the rooftops or remove the people.
there's a 'copyall' button which gives the option to select whole houses/tents and copy/paste them somewhere else... add some tweaking and you got a whole new house somewhere else.

you can also remove the ground simply and make a screenshot... then you have a building to work with in photoshop which could be used together with other map making stuff (like a sketch of a village with only the important buildings in detail)

whole cities would be a bit much but villages are definitly possible with this. using the maps that are already there could give some quick map making.

btw, for the worldmap i'm just using google maps + account + 'create own map'

really handy as i wanted to use the world as my playground.... too bad about the labels of google though.. but i can remove those with photoshop before i would print them for a game...

btw, i'll post some possibilities from that fallout 2 editor later

Someone over at Brilliant Gameolostists suggested a while ago that Heroclix and Horrorclix makes custom maps for modern settings. I haven't gotten my hands on any, but they're full-sized and already drawn. That doesn't necessarily give them a whole lot of replay value for d20M, but still, could be worth it for a setting that you plan to use for a big fight. They apparently have five or six big-ass maps, in total.

I don't know of a free map maker per se, but I use a combination of google and GIMP (a free image program similar to Photoshop). Essentially, find a map you like (if you're using real world, google maps is great). Then, modify it in GIMP using the tools. Finally, take a digital Hex image (there are several programs online to create these) and copy the Hex image over the top of your map. Then add an Alpha channel, essentially making the Hex image transparent except for the lines. Voi La! Nice looking RPG type map. You can even grab some icons (or custom make them) and use them to populate Hexes on your map using cut and paste.

That's a great idea! I'm going to try to use that.

Now if only I could convince my gaming group to use hexes...
