Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. Basically, I'm in a party with a wealthy businessman/computer hacker smart hero who got sort of obsessed with the wealth system and took windfall every level, maxed profession, etc.; a bodyguard-style strong/fast hero, and me, a fast/charismatic hero who can steal anything that isn't nailed down and simultaneously on fire.

Our GM followed the wealth increases by encounter level pretty closely, but we wound up just rolling around in wealth bonuses. I have a +47, the business guy has something just stupid like +70-80, and the bodyguard has something in the high 30s.

I took Minions (d20 past, our GM okayed it), we bought an island, we have some 135 low-level thugs and enough black hawks to carry them all, we got bradleys, we got tanks, whatever.

My character has about a dozen or so +3 mastercrafted guns, mastercrafted armour, fatigues, lockpicks, electric guitar, everything.

We're not playing with UA, so no magic, and no Future, so no gadgets- what in the nine hells should I spend my money on now? A certain amount of twinkery is welcome, I have to make up for the lackluster combat abilities of our uberrich guy.

PS. our primary foe is a supergenius who used a megacorporation to build an army of clones and moreaus and a doomsday device to take over the world, but we foiled him, and now he's back for round 2. We're not sure exactly what his evil plot is, but he's clearly up to no good. We already offered him a job working for us, but he refused.

Your GM made the mistake of not banning Windfall, which is possibly one of the most broken feats in d20M.

I'd allow it as a one-time feat, taken at 1st level only, if the player gives a suitable backstory for it. Otherwise, I personally would disallow it.

A while back I suggested taking a look at encounters aimed at depriving PCs of their wealth. It met with moderate to little interest.

That might be too extreme, but it has occurred to me that it shouldn't be a flat bonus. The whole point of Wealth is that the wealthier you are, the harder is to get even more wealthy (i.e., the exact opposite of the real world). If there were some way to rig the feat such that it has a diminishing return, then I think it could work. It would only be taken by characters whose Wealth is low. If your score is already 20+, then the Windfall feat just shouldn't be all that useful to you.

My first guess would be that, perhaps, the Wealth feat gives you a free, additional Wealth check? That means that the diminishing returns mechanism is built in, and since you'd have to make that check either just before or just after making your regular check, it'd be even less likely to pump up your score into the stratosphere.

Also, stop giving out big-ass bonuses at the end every adventure! That one sounds really simple, to me.

one easy way to do both in one shot, huge ass military fights, they cost a ton and any serious destruction on them is gonna take a huge chunk of the wealth to keep the war going. makes it real fun when wealthy people start wars, they gotta spend their money on the toys of war. then you add the fact that the governments start getting involved and put more taxes and stuff on your characters. that should work.
