| #1sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:34:31 | "In each of us there burns a soul of a warrior. In every generation a few are chosen to prove it, by fighting for their lives, by fighting for their honor and by fighting for their realm...in a tournament called Mortal Kombat." I had mentioned previously on the boards that I was working on a Mortal Kombat R.P.G. after playing Armageddon and Shaolin Monks. All the rules are currently in spiral notebooks and my head, so I figure I can type up the rules here, get some feedback and help others enjoy a game that me and my friends have. The Mortal Kombat R.P.G.s story pulls from multiple sources, including the video games, the comics, the movies and the T.V. shows, it attempts to follow the continuity of the game while adding in the other elements and adjusting the story as necessary to make them fit. The system I have developed is a combination of the D20 system and Palladium games "Ninjas and Superspies with a few of my own edits. :Edits: May 4th-10th May 4th: Announce that this going to happen reserved following post for rules when they are ready to be typed up for the community. May 5th: Story fluff section filled out (information taken and slightly edited from wikipedia). Minor quick notes added to reserves. May 8th: A few list made, a brief but incomplete explanation of the attribute system added. May 9th: Races section alphabatized, Edenians, Oni, Khaosfolk and Demons detailed out. May 10th: Humans, Saurians, Tarkatan and Centaurs detailed out. |
| #2sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:35:05 | History of Mortal Kombat The One Being and The Elder Gods At the beginning of time, there only existed two types of beings: The Elder Gods and the One Being. The One Being gained his power by draining that of the Elder Gods. Eventually the Elder Gods declared war on the One Being to save themselves. In the end, the Elder Gods created several weapons called the Kamidogu. When they used the weapon, the One Being split into many pieces, although its consciousness survived. The Kamidogu became lost in several different pieces of the One Being. Eventually, these pieces became the realms, and life began to grow inside them. There were 6 main realms: Earthrealm, Netherrealm, Outworld, Orderrealm (Seido), Chaosrealm, and Edenia, each with a representative Kamidogu which held the essence of each realm. The question was then asked of how realms could be combined. The Elder Gods decreed that the denizens of one realm could only conquer another realm by defeating the defending realm’s greatest warriors in ten consecutive Mortal Kombat tournaments. The Elder Gods watched over the realms, and governed the realms with untold wisdom; but one such Elder God, known as Shinnok, gave into greed and illusion of false power and wanted the new realm of Earth for himself; however, the Elder Gods had appointed the young God of Thunder known as Raiden to protect Earth. The battle between Raiden and Shinnok was fierce, sending Earth to its near destruction and plunging it into centuries of darkness. Raiden discovered that Shinnok entered the realm through the power of a mystical amulet. It allowed Shinnok to weaken the borders of a realm and therefore enter the realm without challenge and keep the Elder Gods from interfering. Forced to choose between destroying the budding Saurian civilization or to give Earthrealm to Shinnok, Raiden chose the former and stripped the amulet of Shinnok’s possession and with the aid of Elder Gods banished the fallen Elder God to the Netherrealm. Raiden buried the amulet deep with the mountains of Asia and created a massive temple to house the amulet and appointed four guardians to serve as the protectors of the amulet. These guardians represented an element that make up the realm: Wind (Fujin), Earth, Water, and Fire. As long as the amulet remained on Earth, Shinnok would remain trapped in the Netherrealm. |
| #3sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:35:35 | Choose Your Character Assigning Attributes Mortal Kombat uses six attributes, these function similar to the D20 system, with a few minor differences. Characters do not role their attributes, they use a unique point buy system. Each attribute starts at a base of 10, and the player has 20 points to assign, on a 1 for 1 basis, no attribute may be bought above a 16. A characters race, levels, martial arts styles and feats will raise them. A character may also take a penalty of up to -4 to a stat for additional points, again on a 1 for 1 basis. Strength: Strength remains mostly unchanged in Mortal Kombat, aside from a change in a few Kombat systems such as grappling. Constitution: Constitution holds it's original place, except it also determines ones threshold and fatality threshold, two new Kombat modifiers. Dexterity: Dexterity adds to ones defense roles, Mortal Kombat does not use an AC system, rather, a character takes defensive actions in response to offensive ones. Intelligence: Intelligence remains identical to the D20 system. Wisdom: Wisdom has a new place in Mortal Kombat, a characters wisdom modifier determines how much bonus ki a character receives per level, in addition how quickly a character recovers Ki in Kombat. Charisma: Charisma remains identical to the D20 system. |
| #4sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:35:59 | Races Android Examples: Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke (Android) Appearance: Androids are primarily from Earthrealm, though the Netherrealm does have the technology to do so, as was the case of Shinnoks Keepers. Androids may vary in appearance, the first four to enter in the Mortal Kombat tournament had a similar appearance, using mechanical components to replace their original human parts with weapons and armor. History: During Shao Khans invasion of Earthrealm, several Lin Kuei members proposed turing themselves into automatons so that their souls could not be stolen and the could defend Earthrealm. The first was Hydro, whom had already been dead. His remains where converted into an Android, this outraged Sub-Zero and Smoke, who attempted to stop the process, Sub-Zero was forced to flee, Smoke was captured and converted. None of the androids where successful, Hydro was destroyed, Smoke was defeated, Cyrax was lost in the deserts of Outworld and Sektor went insane. Cyrax was recovered by the Outworld Investigation Agency and reprogrammed. Sektor created the Tukunin Empire and Smoke was recovered by Noob Saibot and reprogrammed. Relations: Androids generally serve the same purpose they did before the Automation process. They can be reprogrammed, but otherwise their focus is usually set. Racial Adjustments: Medium Size: Androids are medium size creatures and gain no special benefits or penalties due to size. Soulless: Androids do not have souls, no sorcery that affects souls will affect an android. No Ki: Without souls, Androids are not capable of harnessing Ki. Physical Enhancements: Androids upgrade their bodies defects, they receive an additional 4 points that can be spent on Strength, Dexterity or Constitution. Weapon Systems: Androids have special moves, but they function slightly different. Special moves are bought and upgrading the same way as they are for normal fighters, it is assumed the android spends time tinkering with itself to improve or add weapons. However since they do not use Ki, androids have recharge times. When using a special move, they can not use it again for 3 initiatives. They can buy an upgrade to reduce the time by one initiative, or a penalty to increase it by one initiative. Armor: The armor of an Android gives it a secure defense, they gain a +2 to Block checks. Enhanced Vision: Androids are not hindered by visual disruptions such as darkness, rain, smoke, fire, or snow. They are able to track movement and heat rendering invisibility useless and giving them a +4 bonus on Awareness checks. |
| #5sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:36:25 | Classes There are four classes in Mortal Kombat, ninja, monk, sorcerer and warrior, each with varying strengths and weaknesses. The names of the class are a generic descriptor not a specified profession, for example a player want to play a "ninja" but is not interested in a lot of mystical abilities, so he takes the warrior class, the ninjitsu martial art and a few skills that compliment his stealthy profession such as prowl, climb, tumble, balance and disable device. A character selects his class skills, once selected cannot be changed, no class may select sorcery as a class skill, but sorcerers gain it for free. Basic Basic Bonuses These are bonuses received regardless of class as you level and the experience required for those levels. An “x” indicates the bonus is gained, a “-“ means no bonus received. |

| #9sleepwalker13666May 04, 2008 15:38:49 | Martial Arts Styles Players select up to two martial arts to enhance their Kombat ability, they choose one primary and one secondary, the secondary functions at one level less than the primary, thus a forth level character gains the 4th level benefits of his primary martial art, and the 3rd level benefits of his secondary. A few martial arts styles are considered exclusive, these martial arts count as two styles, as such when a player chooses them, he does not gain a secondary style. A character may only use one style at a time, but may switch styles as a move action. When a character switches styles any defensive or offensive actions taken in the previous style are lost in the new style, however any extra actions available are gained. The kombat bonuses of a style (such as bonuses to hit, damage or defensive roles), critical hit modifiers, special attacks or increased basic move damage only apply while using that style, however attributes, ki/martial arts powers, bonus ki, and skill bonuses apply at all times or the player always has access to them. Aikido Aikido(exclusive) Training Time: 15 years Aikido exhibits great defenses against other martial artist, and allows the practitioner to seek a close sense of inner harmony. In the right stance the feet are at shoulders width apart, right foot facing foward, left foot facing left, right arm loosely extended at chest level, left arm at hand's width from the body, hands extended with fingers separated. For left side the stance is reversed. Attribute Bonuses: +4 Charisma +2 Dexterity Offensive Actions: 1 Defensive Actions: 3 Special Attacks: Knife Hand Knockout: This attack only deals 1d4 damage, however dizzies an opponent til his next initiative. This Attack requires you to be behind the target and have successfully grappled an arm an leg.
