So I have recently been watching the show The Unit, it's about army special forces, but it gave me the idea to run a game similar to this. My problem is that it's hard for me to come up with well rounded missions for the players to complete, things other than just kick in the door and start shooting. I was thinking this doesn't seem to be a very unique idea and I was hoping someone might know of some ready made missions that i could use.

Thanks for any help.

While I don't know of any pre-made missions (although you will want to check out Blood and Guts by RPG Objects), I am currently working on a similar game.  What I have decided to do is to write out the overarching goal of most of the missions in Modern Warfare 1 and 2 along Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2.  So far I've only done Modern Warfare 1, but here it goes:

  • Obtain intel (object, like a laptop) protected by enemies

  • Assist other military force/squad in combat

  • Locate hostage informant in enemy territory

  • Locate and acquire (capture, not kill) high value target

  • Render assistance to a squad with a downed vehicle

  • Escape hostile territory through secondary evac

  • Escort friendly through enemy territory

  • Pursue and acquire hostile

  • Escort injured friendly to rendezvous

  • Sneak through hostile forces to sniper perch

  • Storm enemy base and stop bombs/missile  strike

This is only half the fun though, the environment is what really makes the game come alive.  Oil rigs, cramped buildings, arctic research facilities all make for fascinating adventures.

For my first adventure, terrorists have seized control of a port.  The characters have to fight to free the port, but they must also exercise discretion because they need to know why two ex-CSA members are resuming activities and if it serves a larger purpose (which, of course, it does).

d20 Afghanistan could be a good start, if you're not one of those who were offended by the mere idea. Be warned though, it was written without d20 Modern in mind, but since its still a d20 System game, porting it is a piece of cake. There is also the aforementioned "Blood and Guts" which is a great 3rd party military supplement written for d20 Modern. For just inspiration for adventures you could look into other systems, such as Twilight 2000, Recon, and Phoenix Command.

Also, war movies, watch as many as you can.

Another source that seems rarely mentioned

SPEC OPS

A d20 Modern line, focusing on military special operations and espionage. The Spec Ops line is comprised of no-FX products, meaning the adventures and supplements are devoid of magic, far-future technology or super-heroic powers.

Albenistan Series
- Raid On Ashkashem
- Qalashar Device
- Khorforjan Gambit
- Albenistan: Election Day

additional books:
- Covert Forces
- Canadian Combined Security Reconnaisance Section
- Covert Forces Redux

The above ones are good and I especially like the Blood & Guts series... I am using them to stat out the recon team sent to a D&D style dimension where the PC's from there will encounter them... also the following are good too:

D20 vehicles from around the world: stats for vehicles like the Hummer, surface ships, etcetera are listed within

Encyclopedia Vanguard: also lists a few vehicles as well as standard arms including the AT-4 and Mortars

I don't know of many ready-made missions, but you can do a quick search for some open source information on SF and some of what they do. Here's a quote from Wikipedia

The United States Army Special Forces, also known as Green Berets, is a Special Operations Force (SOF) of the United States Army tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism. The first two emphasize language, cultural, and training skills in working with foreign troops. Other duties include combat search and rescue (CSAR), security assistance, peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian demining, counter-proliferation, psychological operations, manhunts, and counter-drug operations; other components of the United States Special Operations Command or other U.S. government activities may also specialize in these secondary areas.[2] Many of their operational techniques are classified, but some nonfiction works[3] and doctrinal manuals are available.[4][5][6]

The original and most important mission of the Special Forces had been "unconventional warfare", while other capabilities, such as direct action, were gradually added.

I haven't looked through them, but try these:

You might find something that you can adapt to taste.

Same as with my crossover campaign with D&D 3.5 which is what my group primarily plays when we gather... you could watch the news or take concepts from movies... a few concepts follow.

stop the detonation of a nuke and then retrieve the others from the enemy

Stop/retrieve a new bio-chem agent from the enemy

Retrieve/plant monitoring devices in an enemy controlled city

Recon enemy installation and then call in strategic missile strike to destroy the bio-chem lab there

Yeah, that could work. I'd just recommend going to an actual news source as opposed to some of the crap that passes for TV journalism these days.

THEREALORION for what possible reason did you make such a crude, small-minded remark?

How about from EARTHTIMES?
Report: US forces aid Yemen in al-Qaeda strikes
Earthtimes (press release) - ‎15 hours ago‎
By : dpa Washington - US military teams and intelligence agencies have been helping Yemeni troops in military operations that have killed six of the 15 top ...

That's totally my fault. I actually didn't mean to refer to that specific source or that specific news item. I was speaking in general, but looking back, I entirely acknowledge that I accidentally implied otherwise. Mia culpa. Seriously, my bad.

What I meant to say was that in general, it pays to go to a trustworthy news source, and that in general, TV news in America is not particularly trustworthy. Go to print (it hasn't all be moved over to the "entertainment" division yet), and do yourself the favour of getting an international perspective. If you look at the same story from NY Times, then BBC, and then, say, a South American or Continental source, you'll see a world of difference in what's reported and how.

Roger, roger TRO. and I agree that one should always tap multiple news sources. I'm poly-lang, my reading, skimming, scanning of news is very multi-national.

My apologies to the forum for the off-topic.

Storylines taken from headline news:
How about a Hostage Rescue from Pirates adventure hook? (also here)

(note I didn't mention nationalities)

Hell you could even completely rip off games like Rainbow Six, CoD Modern Warfare, etc. As long as realism isn't your intent, there's plenty of sources for inspiration.

oh yah, how about a mission generator?

Modern Dispatch (#29): Modern Adventure Generator

This issue of Modern Dispatch provides Gamemasters with a series of tables with which they can generate adventure seeds for any modern d20 campaign. The core concept of an adventure is broken into five different categories, and each category provides 64 different options -- thereby allowing this adventure generator to provide 1,073,741,824 possible adventure seeds, with each one useable in any modern d20 campaign!

It might be a tad late, since the last post was about a week ago, but I think I can help you XanderCage72344, for I had/have the same idea. Namely build a campaign revolving around special forces in modern days. I got the idea when I stumbled upon a review of 'Blood and Guts: Modern Military II'. In my mind absolutely essential for the type of campaign you want to build. Another recommendation in the 'Blood and Guts' series is 'In Her Majesty's service'. If focusses on UK special Forces (SAS and SBS mostly) but it has great advanced classes!

I never really looked around for decent premade campaigns or adventures, basicly because I always build my own campaigns. Since the middle-east and security issues are my two main interests in life,  the setting was easily chosen: The Middle-East in 2020.

So I set out to build my own campaign revolving around a US special forces team caught in a conflict in the middle-east. After reading loads and loads of information about special forces, politics and security issues in the middle-east I decided that the main storyline would be a war between Saudia-Arabia (along with the rest of the gulf-cooperation council) and Iran and Syria. After working on it for almost four months now (just don't have as much time as I used to) I'm almost half-way part 1 (Three part campaign)

So far it starts with an introductory-mission: The party has to infiltrate the Uranium Enrichment Facility in Natanz to plant a hidden-modem in one of the computers there. After installing the modem the alarm goes of and the party has to fight it's way out. On their way out they run into a group of sunni rebels (which in fact are Mossad-agents posing as Saudi-Arabian Special Forces posing as rebels). On the plane back to the US the party hears of an explosion in the Natanz facility killing Grand-Ayatollah Khamenei.

Soon after the attack Iran starts to blame Saudi-Arabia for the assasination of the Ayatollah. Almost a year later Iran (with help from Syria) invades the GCC.

The First real mission: The Party has to infiltrate and retake a part of the Al-junbal oil facility in order to rescue the crew of the US Clearwater (an oil tanker) that has been taken hostage by Shia Terrorists. When the Al-junbal facility has been retaken the party is contacted by the head of Saudia secret service for an audience in the city of Ab-qaiq.

Second mission: The Party has to travel to Ab-qaiq and meet up with the prince. On the way there they are attacked. When they arrive in Ab-qaiq the village is in turmoil and the party gets caught in  the crossfire.

There are about four other missions I have already planned. Lemme know whether or not you're interested in the rest (too pressed for time to give it all now).

Last few pointers though:
- Read/read/read about the setting you want
- Use as much real info as you can. Google earth, sattelite images, pieces of video news, newspaper articles and so on.
- Watch action movies and series for inspiration (great examples are The Unit/Generation Kill and the movies Syriana, Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies)
- Read books (Tom Clancy among others)
