| #1squaretangleMar 12, 2009 16:16:41 | Hello there veterans... I'm new to d20 Modern and wanted to start out with a Negotiator. Stats: (these can be moved around) 18 - Charisma 16 - Constitution 14 - Dexterity 14 - Intelligence 10 - Wisdom 9 - Strength Books Allowed - d20 Modern Core book, maybe d20 future, d20 modern-5 new prestige classes, and urban arcana (on DMs discretion). I can't get any classes that deal with magic or psionics or anything like that. My thoughts for a build : 1 Charismatic Hero/1 Fast Hero (that 3 defense bonus + evasion sounds nice. The DM might allow getting all of this with a lvl 1 dip)/2 Charismatic Hero(assuming this was all i needed for requirements of Negotiator)/10 Negotiator/5 Mastermind (already got the OK)/1 Charismatic Hero Total Feats: 2 (at Level 1) +1 (Cha Hero Lvl 2 - Point Blank Shot or Dodge) +3 (Negotiator - Armor Proficiency (light), Far Shot, Adv firearms) +6 (lvl 3,6,9,12,15,18) = 12 feats I assume I want a gun for a weapon, so I was thinking of using these feats: Armor Proficiency(light) Heroic Surge Far Shot Advanced Firearms Proficiency Burst Fire Point Blank Shot Precise Shot Double Tap Quick Draw Quick Reload +feat +feat Questions: 1. Any Build Suggestions? 2. Recommended Feats/Equipment? 3. What can i do up increase my DCs? (like somehow increase my Cha) ___________________ I have no idea what to do . Thanks in advance everyone!:D -SquareTangle |
| #2backstabbistMar 12, 2009 19:03:44 | To improve your Skill Rolls, take the feats that garnt +2's to those skills. Feats like Trustworthy, Stealthy, Alert etc You can free up 2 Feats if you just stick to DoubleTap instead of Autofire & Burst.... use a discount ww2 m1 Garand and a DTap it 3d10. PreciseShot & QuickDraw lack luster as you gain levels |
| #3squaretangleMar 12, 2009 20:16:59 | Thanks Backstabbist, but when i meant my DCs, i meant the talk down ability from Negotiator, which is DC 10 + Negotiator level + Cha. Also, where are these weapons? "use a discount ww2 m1 Garand and a DTap it 3d10." Thanks again!:P |
| #4Waylan_WolfMar 12, 2009 20:47:59 | I think the Garand rifle is in D20 Past. But if you ar using only the core rulebook, might I suggest the Barret light .50? I think the base damage is 2d12. double tap would make it 3d12. |
| #5squaretangleMar 13, 2009 0:43:54 | I think the Garand rifle is in D20 Past. Wow that's a lot of damage...Does that make sense at all with my type of character though? A negotiator with a sniper rifle on a bipod? Do you guys recommend any feats that I should get? My attack bonus looks disgraceful, with a +10 or +11 BAB by lvl 20. IMO, feats that give +2 to some skill is wasteful, and I am unsure if I should get feats to help with gun use or to help something else. What ways can I increase my Charisma? Thanks for the input guys ![]() |
| #6backstabbistMar 13, 2009 0:55:25 | What ways can I increase my Charisma? According to the commercials on TV, you need to drink their brand of beer and you become a babe magnet. .... and dont forget the 'body spray' Maybe you could hire a couple guys as an entourage, that blurt out "Thats right" after everything you say, and have the GM give you some points from them Aid Other "Drop the gun, and we wont hurt you" Thans right! "We just want to talk" Thats right! man, I'd give +2 for that, maybe +5 |
| #7Waylan_WolfMar 13, 2009 1:03:41 | well you should probably put your highest score in Cha and then use the +1 to an ability score every 4 levels to improve it. Put max ranks in Diplomacy, Bluff and Intimidate and take skill focus for those feats as well... take the +2 feats Backstabbist mentioned (trustworthy etc...) and you'll get a +5 to those skill checks just from the feats. assuming an 18 Cha, max ranks in Diplomacy, skill focus Diplomacy and trustworthy, you should have a +9 to diplomacy checks at 1st level. by 8th level you should have +21, and by 16th you should have +30. |
| #8korik1Mar 13, 2009 1:10:38 | If you want to keep reasonable in terms of weapons I'd recommend simply going with a glock and using Dtap. For normal gear, a backpack is good because you count as having +1 Str for carrying capacity and a concealed holster is also good for the bonus it gives to concealing weapons. I'd also suggest radio ear pieces for the whole party. As for increasing stats the only way to really do it is by gaining levels, since there are no magic items. I'd drop quick draw and probably reload too. You can draw a weapon as part of a move action if your BAB is +1 or better, so it's never really any good. I'd replace quick draw with improved initiative, much more useful. Also get trust worthy, and deceptive if you like. If you aren't taking a weapon with autofire, then you won't need advanced firearms or burstfire. Though if you talk with you GM you might be able to convince him/her to let you take the burstfire feat without advanced firearms so long as you can only use it with non auto-fire guns, i.e. those with a burst fire setting. You may also consider getting Charismatic Plus to get two more talents, making your character more flexible. If it's not out of character, Renown can be good for those moments where you need to convince someone of something (whether to trust you or fear you) and you can say "Do you know who I am? Yes? Then you know you can trust me." And then argue for diplomacy bonuses (and maybe Roleplaying XP). You might consider asking your GM if you can apply the Spell Focus Feat in Urban Arcana to you special abilities that rely on Cha for DC. It's only +1, so it's not huge, but it can be a nice bit of fluff (and there's always the follow up feat that bumps it up to +2). You might also consider getting Medium armour prof. since you might have the feats to spare now. Hope that helps and sorry for the wall of text. |
| #9nobodez_hereMar 13, 2009 1:25:19 | Mastercraft is your friend. According to the rules, MC+1 items aren't rare, just more expensive. So, since your strength is low, use a MC +1 Mesh Vest (+3 Str for carrying capacity) so you don't have to worry about carrying stuff. As for a weapon, well, as a negotiator, you'd either have no weapon, or a standard sidearm (M9/92F if military, Glock 17 if civilian). Make sure it's mastercraft. Get your MC+1 Armor (the best Dex to Defense ratio) and wear it under the Mesh Vest. Of course, if you're playing a level 20 character, you'd probably be able to swing MC+3 items for all fo the above, and in that case, don't forget the Luxury quality Business Suit. |
| #10squaretangleMar 13, 2009 3:29:36 | Awesome Info everyone! :D This is exactly the kind of info i was looking for, thank you very much :D Any more info would still be very much appreciated! BTW, what is Charismatic Plus? Where can i read up on that? |
| #11squaretangleMar 13, 2009 5:46:12 | Update: This is what my feat list looks like as of this moment. Total Feats: 2 (at Level 1) +1 (Cha Hero Lvl 2 - Point Blank Shot or Dodge) +3 (Negotiator - Armor Proficiency (light), Far Shot, Adv firearms) +6 (lvl 3,6,9,12,15,18) = 12 feats 1)Talent Skill Focus (homebrew...sorta like Spell Focus, but for class talents instead of a magic school. Thanks Korik1 for this idea!) 2)Charismatic Plus 3)Armor Proficiency(light) 4)Armor Proficiency(medium) 5)Improved Initiative 6)Heroic Surge 7)Far Shot 8)Point Blank Shot 9)Double Tap 10)Quick Reload +feat +feat What other Feats should I get? Are trustworthy and deceptive really that useful? Maybe Dodge? Fast Plus? x 2? The Fast Plus things seem pretty useful. I would get Uncanny Dodge 1 and 2, along with a 10 foot speed bonus. Thanks!:P |
| #12korik1Mar 13, 2009 12:48:55 | I suppose you found the Charismatic Plus feat (d20 Future and d20 Past for those who don't know), but something you have to remember about the feat (and other Plus feats) is that you can't use it to get the root of a talent tree (i.e. Melee Smash, Extreme Effort, and Ignore Hardness are not available through the feat) AND the two talents you get have to be in separate talent trees. Dodge is only really good if you plan on following it with some of the next feats in the line (i.e. Mobility, Agile Riposte, etc.). Fast Plus isn't a bad idea so long as you keep in mind the restrictions of the feat as I said earlier. You might also consider Combat Expertise for the defense bonus. Run for the speed boost (especially when combined with Improved Speed, and Fleet of Foot [in Urban Arcana]). Deceptive and Trustworthy are really best at low levels when a +2 can really help, but their usefulness doesn't go away at higher levels. I'd also recommend having a look through Future and Urban Arcana (especially UA) because although you won't be able to use everything in it there's still a lot of good feats in both. |

Where does it say that you can't get the root of the talent tree? Edit: I just realized that the plus feats don't have the roots listed under what I can choose. |
| #14squaretangleMar 14, 2009 15:01:32 | May I ask what things I should buy?. What weapons/equipment/etc? What else other than:
Things that relate to a negotiator roleplaying-wise are also welcome. We are starting off at level 5, and I have a beginning wealth of 22. Thanks guys :D |
| #15backstabbistMar 14, 2009 15:21:07 | If you're starting t lvl5, get a 1911 45pistol and a p38 can opener for your keychain Crimp some RJ45 connectors onto 20' of Detcord and call it a crossover cable cool shades.... ya gotta have cool shades pack of gum & pack of cigs... to offer in negotiations Vial of ear-ache dropps, no lable, to offer as "antidote" after a Poison Bluff negotiation car jumper cables, as visual aide for Hostile Inquisitions "Hey BigAl, guess what we're doing next " cheap plug-in extention cord, ready to cut off end and wire up an Inquisitee Baggie of random spent cassings from the range, to toss around a crime scene to throw off cops |
| #16squaretangleMar 14, 2009 15:40:23 | If you're starting t lvl5, get a 1911 45pistol What book is the 1911 pistol? Page number? |
| #17korik1Mar 15, 2009 18:16:34 | The Colt 1911 is in Core, but there are 1 or 2 variations in the weapons locker. Statistically I don't think it's actually the best pistol, unless you're using reliability rules, but it's one of the most bad ass pistols ever. The US military used for almost 90 years because it's just so well made. You might also want a silencer, and a laser aimer/red dot. I'd recommend a Semi-auto hunting rifle if you need to be somewhat civilian in appearance. Otherwise say "f*** you" to common sense and get a Barret Light fifty. Though the barret is hardly mobile. The winchester isn't a bad gun, it's only downside is that it's ammo is internal as opposed to box, so you might consider the HK PSG1 instead if it's a big deal. A scope can be handy, but isn't necessary. You should get some handcuffs, or zip ties at the least. Binoculars, DUCT TAPE, a road map, sleeping bag, flashlight (pen AND standard), at least 3 magazines (preferably 2 for main gun and 1 for sidearm), and a compass. Cell phone AND radio ear piece. Possibly Night vision goggles, bolt cutters, Medical Kit (even without treat injury you can still take 20 and heal someone a little [like say, the medic]). Remember that you can always leave most of this stuff at home, and only take it on missions where you think you'll need it, or where you don't know what to expect. However, ALWAYS keep the duct tape, penlight, compass, magazines, radio, handcuffs, and binoculars because those items will likely come up often, and/or have multiple uses, and/or are the types of things where if you need them, you REALLY want to have them. |
| #18backstabbistMar 15, 2009 18:51:56 | Flashlights? I got your flashlights right here, pal |
