New Campaign Setting: Psyberpunk

Nov 26, 2008 23:06:37 The Psyberpunk campaign setting takes place in the rapidly expanding metropolis of Bitterroot, Montana. In the not too distant future a drug has been discovered called Renothalmezzine, originally intended to boost cognitive functioning it has been shown to cause birth defects in infants, occasionally resulting in what scientists have termed "cryptesthesia," or extrasensory perception.

Renothalmezzine fails to become approved by the FDA, however it finds its way onto the street, generally sold as a cheap alternative to cheaper cognitive boosters, resulting in numerous drug-babies born addicted to Reno, sometimes demonstrating supernatural abilities.

The general public is unaware of all this, but certain corporations and government entities have taken an interest in these individuals.

The players are all unwitting cryptesthesiacs, or potential cryptesthesiacs, and they must choose who to trust and who to avoid when corporations, government agencies and criminal organizations begin coming after them.

This setting will use the modern core book, d20 future, future tech, d20 cyberscape and a few excerpts from the Expanded Psionics Handbook (mostly the Augmentation system).

Dec 03, 2008 22:40:39 It sounds good. The experimental drug theme is a little cliche, but I like the idea of congnitive boosters gone wrong. You should think about some other more unexpected vector. Maybe a trial dietary suppliment give to a school district to boost reading levels or the side effect of the latest electronics fad meant to promote a good night's rest.

How about their parent were poisoned by a energy drink, Zoom Juice (the drug Renothalmezzinethat is one of its ingredients), which was recalled by the manufacturer as defective and destroyed. Once the existance of these psychic mutants was discovered various secret agencies are trying to recreate the serendipitous formula without success so far.

Do your psychics have obvious birth defects to go along with their powers?

Dec 04, 2008 14:03:59 Not all of the birth defects caused by Reno result in psionic powers. Those that do usually are not otherwise obvious, but those that do not tend to somewhat debilitating.
