I recall reading (or hearing on a podcast?) somewhere that the d20 Modern revamp won't be seen until late 2010 or in 2011. They have stated that it's going to happen, so all that's needed is patience. They have a lot on their plate at the moment. Once Star Wars has run its course with all the books they can print without losing money (the saturation point), then d20 Modern is sure to follow it up in short order.

They also claimed there would be no 4e and that there would be a superhero supplement to d20M. At this point, I see no reason to trust what they say they'll be doing a year or two down the road. I don't say that to accuse them of being liars, but simply to point out that they're not very good at predicting what they will and won't be capable of accomplishing.

For anyone to say there "won't" be something is a little different than saying there "will" be something. Success of a product line, the demands of the fans, and market saturation are what dictate product. D&D 3.5 was suffering from inability to attract a larger market share and market saturation for its current target audience, as well as dissatisfaction with the unchecked rule of power gamers; the simple fact is that the game needed improvement, and it has been the recent philosophy of Wizards that D&D will continue to change and grow as new advancements in RPG gaming are revealed. For d20 Modern there is significant support for the d20 Modern line, with other companies still producing d20 Modern products, as well as the hard-core fan base demonstrated on the net, and they are still working kinks out of fulfilling fan requests. Star Wars: Saga was a step short of the goal and D&D 4e shot a little too far past it, so d20 Modern will undoubtedly seek to find the sharper balance that has been developed by the Star Wars designers and fans. Rodney is currently in charge of d20 Modern development oversight, as I understand it, and he has a lot of ideas on blending and improving on the SW:Saga and D&D 4e rules. Plus, d20 Modern is more generic, which means they pretty much have to produce it if they want the market share that is waiting for an advancement in the generic market.

Sorry, what? Do you have a citation and source for that information? As far as I know, Rodney hasn't said anything about d20 Modern in a long time, and he isn't involved in anything to do with d20 Modern one way or another. He is currently the lead designer on the Star Wars Saga product line (which is probably one of the reasons why that product line is so damn amazing, and feels so much like d20 Modern 2.0).

My bad on the in charge of development part. I think I confused some of his statements about d20 Modern. I thought he was in charge of d20 Modern, but reviewing the creds, I see I must be getting Star Wars on the brain.

I wish I knew where to find all the links, but I don't. Last I heard, d20 Modern revamp was planned, but currently on the back burner while SW:Saga gets established. The date I had seen/heard was some time in late 2010 or in 2011. That I will stick by, unless some new announcement changes it.

TBPH, I can't really imagine them actually releasing a modern 2. d20 mod seemed sort of second string in importance. I have a conspiracy theory that the poll at the top of the threads is just there to keep the d20 modders complacent, believing that one day there will be an update.... mwahahahaha!

Too much? maybe.

Could you imagine a 4e modern?

"i use my at-will power to cap that guy, giving you +1 to hit for the turn."
"thanks! I use that +1 and my at-will power to add my CON score to damage with my colt 1911"
"so you're what, digesting his defence?"
"and how!"

I find this thought very amusing. I can't see how at-wills could really work in modern, and I certainly can't imagine dailies.

Our hero, Col mustard breaks into the evil overlord's lair. The overlord only has one minion, SuperMook.

Col Mustard shoots SuperMook in the head, using his daily power Headshot Kill, taking him out on the first round of combat. The Evil Overlord stares at Col Mustard in terror, and realizes that mortality is staring back. However, Col Mustard arbitrarily cannot use Headshot Kill again because it was 1/day... so now must settle for adding his WIS to damage or whatever his at-will allows.

long story short, overlord wins again.

EDIT: I'm not criticizing 4e and not trying to start an edition war- i just don't think it could work for modern.

Who said there would be at-wills? Just because they mix 4e in a little doesn't mean they're going to toss everything in. I think they will do what is best for d20 Modern and not try to force it into the 4e mold. They will certainly borrow elements from 4e, but I don't think it will be a 4e clone, or else what's the point in creating a separate game? You might as well create Modern supplements based on 4e instead of a Modern core rulebook. And as you suggest, I don't think that would be very well received for Modern. AD&D has always been about making your characters into gods. Modern seems to be about survival in the face of eminent danger, in the sense that you have a very strong chance of not making it. Cinematic actions and power versus very mortal characters. Really, what's the point to a horror adventure in which no one dies? What's the point to a bughunter campaign if solders aren't getting their heads bit off? It's only in Modern that I ever see the suggestion pop up to have more than 1 backup character handy. So I seriously doubt whether the things that make you survive practically immortally are going to show up in any revamp of d20 Modern. There's no money in it.

I'll believe it when I see it. Wizards never made any promises, I honestly have no idea where you're getting this from. The only time its ever even come up was in a "podcast" (I'll be honest, I hate that word) as an offhand comment of something that they might maybe do if the feel like it.

Bye Bye Modern forum.

When it comes to anything programming related Wizards has proven itself time and again to be nothing more than EXTREMELY incompetent. There is little doubt in my mind all these new "features" will be buggy to the point of just not being usable, half the forum accounts will disappear (AGAIN), and they'll "accidentally" kill half the boards. Which will all just happen to be the old edition boards.

I would imagine that they are moving to a purchased program. The fact that they have to migrate everything and that they didn't have a testing period for it, or even fanfare as given for the failed Gleemax, suggests a fully functioning pre-programmed suite.

I doubt they will forget d20 Modern, but we'll see about that.

Okay guys: If they do drop the d20 mod forum in the black ether of the internet, then we relocate to the D&Dinsider forum until they bring it back.

Imagine, if you will, the thread topics:

-dndi glitch plz help by whoneedscapitalletters
-Need Suggestions Please by punctuationisgreat00
-Apple Mac Users by silly mac-user84
-Where you can shove your 5-7 and how hard to do so by angrypeople
-ALL-NEW Nuclear powered shotgun slugs by backstabbist

makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside... *reminisces back to his communist revolutionary days*

Perhaps this is, once again, a good time to move to another forum? A lot of people, myself included, migrated to Brilliant Gameologists, but I found it wasn't the forum for me (I'm not an optimiser and that site is dedicated to optimising). Is there a pre-existing site that we could just move to? Does anyone have the tech skills to build one some place?

I don't think the mod(s) there would be as strict as the ones here. Say what you will, but at least on Wizard's forums people are much more polite than on most others.

Plus, it's easier to get new posters here, as what interested customers remain will more easily find this site.

The presence or absence of swearing has little to do with politeness. It's perfectly possibly to troll like a mofo while not swearing. Besides, when's the last time a mod actually intervened around here?

My point is, I'm happy to stay here, but if "here" doesn't exist any more, I want somewhere else to go. Posting here really helps me design games and rules.

Indeed. Sorry I caused a panic. But after rereading the announcement by Michelle I'm convinced Modern boards will be there after the switch.

Its actually kind of cool that we will get wiki and stuff. I've tried before to maintain a D&D4E campaign thread in the forums. The format is all wrong. Wiki will be much better for anyone like CyberDave's SWSE campaign setting or my defunked Future Galactic Concord campaign. Plus you get to choose who can contribute. Good ridance derailers.;)

I vote ten internets that it will be exactly 1/4 of the users in the charops board, 1/2 of the users (including yours truly) in this board, 1/3 of all users on other 3.x and 3.x-related boards, 1/10 of users from the 4e boards, and nobody from astrid's parlour.

I think those are two different issues: (a) the boards going down and losing a bunch of "archived" material, and (b) linking anything we come up with rather than posting it here because posting it here makes the copyright revert to Wizards.

NB: I don't have any objection to Wizards writing their forum rules such that they "own" anything posted here. It would seem to be a defensive measure more than anything else. I just wanted to clarify that that is not meant as a side-long attack on their business practises.
