Obrysii created some great stats for the Transformers over here on the Star Wars boards and I wanted to convert them over to the d20 Modern rule set.

Transformers
Transformers are a race of humanoid shaped living robots from a far off world known as Cybertron.

Size: Transformers can range in size from Small to Colossal, though they are generally in the Large to Gargantuan range. Their ability adjustments and base land speed are based on size.

Ability Adjustments:
Small: Str -4, Dex +8, Con +2,
Medium: Dex +4, Con +2,
Large: Str +4, Dex -2, Con +4
Huge: Str +8, Dex -4, Con +4
Gargantuan: Str +12, Dex -6, Con +6
Colossal: Str +16, Dex -8, Con +6

Speed:
Small: 20ft
Medium: 30ft
Large: 40ft
Huge: 50ft
Gargantuan: 60ft
Colossal: 70ft

Type: Construct (Living construct)
As living Machines Transformers combine aspects of both constructs and living creatures, as detailed below.
  • A living construct derives its Hit Dice, base attack bonus progression, saving throws, and skill points from the class it selects.
  • Unlike other constructs, a living construct has a Constitution score. A living construct does not gain bonus hit points by size but gains (or loses) bonus hit points through a Constitution bonus (or penalty) as with other living creatures.
  • Unlike other constructs, a living construct does not have darkvision. Unlike other living constructs, a Cybertronian does have low-light vision.
  • Unlike other constructs, a living construct is not immune to mind-influencing effects.
  • Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, disease, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, and energy drain.
  • A living construct cannot heal damage naturally.
  • Unlike other constructs, living constructs are subject to critical hits, effects requiring a Fort save, death from massive damage, nonlethal damage, stunning, ability damage, ability drain, and death effects or necromancy effects.
  • Unlike other constructs, a living construct can use the run action.
  • Living constructs can be affected by spells that target living creatures as well as by those that target constructs. Damage dealt to a living construct can be healed by a cure light wounds spell or a repair light damage spell, for example, and a living construct is vulnerable to a harm spell. However, spells from the healing subschool provide only half effect to a living construct.
  • A living construct responds slightly differently from other living creatures when reduced to 0 hit points. A living construct with 0 hit points is disabled, just like a living creature. He can only take a single move action or standard action in each round, but strenuous activity does not risk further injury. When his hit points are less than 0 and greater than -10, a living construct is inert. He is unconscious and helpless, and he cannot perform any actions. However, an inert living construct does not lose additional hit points unless more damage is dealt to him, as with a living creature that is stable.
  • Can be raised or resurrected.
  • Does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe, but can still benefit from the effects of consumable spells and magic items such as heroes' feast and potions.
  • Does not need to sleep, but must rest for 8 hours before preparing spells.
  • Cybertronians can be repaired using the Repair skill. A successful Repair check (DC 30) heals 1d10 points of damage, and each check represents 1 hour of work. A Cybertronian may make the repair check on themselves.

Spark: Transformers have been imbued with life by the AllSpark. This gives them, in effect, a 'soul' or spirit. They can master powers of Arcane, Divine, or Psionic origin just as easily as any other life form.

Transformation: Transformers have an innate ability to transform into some vehicle-based form. This is a purely mechanical transformation, and parts required for its vehicle form are visible in its normal bipedal form.

As a standard action, a Transformer may assume into its chosen form or back again. While transformed, they lose any attacks that require appendages (although they may keep any ranged weapons that are mounted on weapons mounts).

At first level a Transformer chooses a civilian vehicle of the same size category as it’s base form. A Transformer becomes a standard version of the vehicle, but may later add gear (such as mounted weapons.) Whenever a Transformer would gain a new feat due to hit die, it may also change it’s vehicle form, so long as the new vehicle is of the same size category as it’s base form.

While in vehicle form they use all of the stats of the chosen vehicle form with the following exceptions: The Transformer keeps it’s own hit points, class defense bonus to armor class, and treats the listed vehicle’s hardness as Damage Reduction /-. A Transformer also retains any benefit from it’s feats or class talents (such as a fast hero’s increased speed or a tough hero’s damage reduction.)

While in vehicle form the Transformer follows all rules for vehicle movement, maneuvers, and stunts. The Transformer is treated as it’s own driver, but may relinquish (or regain) control to a passenger in the driver’s position as a free action once per round.

Skill Bonuses: All Transformers gain a +5 species bonus to Drive and Pilot as well as a +2 bonus to Disguise and Bluff. A Transformer is naturally capable of maneuvering it’s self and is can easily disguise it’s self as a mundane vehicle.

Free Language Skills: Read/Write Cybertronian, Read/Write English.

Other Languages: Any

Level Adjustment: By size.
Small & Medium: +2
Large: +3
Huge: +4
Gargantuan: +5
Colossal: +6

--- --- ---

I went with choosing a vehicle over the flat bonuses by type because I thought it was a little more fitting for the modern setting. I’m calling these temporary level adjustments until I get feedback on what everybody thinks about them and what they should be.

I think this could use a little work, and look forward to everybody’s feedback.

Edit 7/19: Added low-light vision, and repairable.
Edit 7/20: Added civilian vehicle restriction
Edit 8/01: Changed level ajustment on small size.

I've also come up with some feats that I thought would work. Let me know if the seem unbalanced.

Tougher Stuff [Transformer]
You’re a little tougher than the rest
Prereq: Two other Transformer Feats, BAB +11, Transformation special ability
Benefit: You retain half of your vehicle form’s DR (rounded down) while in your normal form. This stacks with any other source that grants DR /- (such as the tough hero DR talent Tree.)
Special: This feat may be taken as a Tough hero bonus feat.

Greased Lightning [Transformer]
You’re the envy of every car on the racetrack
Prereq: Fast Hero Increased Speed Talent, Transformation special ability
Benefit: In vehicle form the benefits you gain from the Fast hero’s Increased speed Talent Tree improve to match your capabilities as a vehicle. Increased Speed Provides +15% increase of movement instead of +5ft, Imp. Increased speed provides +30% increase, and Advanced Increased speed provide +50% increase.
Special: This feat may be taken as a Fast hero bonus feat.

Armored Frame [Transformer]
You were created with a more durable frame.
Prereq: BAB +1, Transformation special ability
Benefit: You gain a +4 Equipment bonus to Defense. This does not stack with other equipment bonuses to defense.

Efficient Transformation [Transformer]
You are able fit more into less space.
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may chose a vehicle form one size category smaller than your base form. This does not change your base form’s size category.

Larger Transformation. [Transformer]
You are able to do more with less
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may choose a vehicle form one size category larger than your base form. This does not change your base form’s size category.

Big Surprise, Little Package [Transformer]
Prereq; Size Small, Transformation special ability
Benefit: Your non base form may be of any mechanical or electronic device of your size category and does not have to be a vehicle.

Beast Mode [Transformer]
You have answered the call of the wild.
Prereq: Transformation special ability, Can only be taken at 1st level.
Benefit: Instead of choosing a vehicle for your alternate form, you instead choose a form of the Animal type that is of the same size as your base form and of equal or lower Challenge Rating. You may still only change your chosen animal form when you would gain a feat due to hit die. You transform into an average example of the animal. While in animal form you gain the Natural Armor bonus, Strength score, Dexterity score, Movement types and speeds, Natural Weapons, and any Special Qualities that do not derive a Save DC from Constitution. While in animal form you retain the ability to speak. Because your animal form may lack the appropriate appendages the GM may decide that cannot use certain skills, weapons, or equipment while in animal form.

Fully Armed [Transformer]
Sometimes civilian vehicles just aren’t enough
Prereq: One other Transformer feat, BAB +8, Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may now choose from military as well as civilian vehicles for your vehicle form. You are not automatically proficient with the weapons that may come with that form.
Normal: You may only choose civilian vehicles for your vehicle form.
Special: This feat may be taken as a Strong hero bonus feat.

Keen Senses [Transformer]
You can sense the world just as well as any flesh and blood creature.
Prereq: Wis 15, Beast Mode, Transformation special ability
Benefit: You retain the senses of your animal form while in your base form.
Special: This feat may be taken as a Dedicated hero bonus feat.

Faster Transformation [Transformer]
Your Transformations are a blur to the naked eye.
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may Transform as a move action instead of a standard action.
Special: This feat may be taken as a Fast hero bonus feat.

Crew Complement [Transformer]
Some people would become suspicious of a moving vehicle without a driver. Luckily, you have that covered.
Prereq: Deceptive, Transformation special ability
Benefit: While in vehicle form, if you have no passengers in the appropriate positions (i.e. someone in the drivers seat in a civilian vehicle) you may project a hologram of a person that appears to performing the correct actions while active. This hologram is merely a projection of light and cannot leave the position it is being generated at (i.e. the driver cannot get out of the car, change seats, ect.)
Special: This feat may be taken as a Charismatic hero bonus feat.

Strafing Transformation [Transformer]
You can strike in unexpected ways.
Prereq: Dexterity 13, Dodge, Mobility, Faster Transformation, Transformation special ability
Special Prereq: Spring Attack or Shot on the Run, You must meet the the prereq’s of whichever you are using.
Benefit: While in vehicle or animal form, you may spend an action point to transform into your normal form before your attack and transform back to your vehicle or animal form after your attack. You use the movement speed of your vehicle or animal form instead of your normal form.

Body Shop
Your understanding of how things work allows you to rebuild things in record time.
Prereq: Repair 10 ranks, Craft (mechanical or electronic) 5 ranks
Benefit: When making a Repair check to repair damage to a construct or living construct you repair an additional point of damage for every 2 points you exceed the check.

Advanced Crew Complement [Transformer]
Your hologram is better than most.
Prereq: Crew Compartment.
Benefit: You can project the hologram up to (10ft. x Character Level) away from the vehicle. This is a 'solid' hologram, capable of manipulating its environment and communication, but it disappears at the first 'rough' handle-like having a bullet passing through it. The GM might also make you roll Concentration to maintain the hologram, depending of conditions such as fog, thick materials, comunication jamming and plain combat.
Special: This feat may be taken as a Charismatic hero bonus feat.

Gestalt[Transformer]
You have been modified to combine with other transformers.
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may combine with a transformer who took the Gestalt Leader feat, and is at least the same, but no more than one size category larger than you. When you combine into your gestalt form, you may select to become an arm or a leg.

Gestalt Leader[Transformer]
You have been modified to serve as the foundation for a Combiner
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may combine with four other transformers, all of whom must have the Gestalt feat, and must be your size category or one smaller. The other four must all be the same size.

Ride With Me [Transformer]
You are adept at working with other races while in your vehicle form.
Prereq: Transform special ability, Large size or greater
Benefit: While in your vehicle form and while a passenger is piloting, you may automatically Aid Another's Drive or Pilot check as a free action. Also, while another is piloting your vehicle form, the two of you together are able to coax more speed from your engines. You move at 110% of your speed - or some similar bonus, since I'm not sure what is balanced.
Once per round, if an attack is being resolved against a passanger of your vehicle form, you may make a drive or pilot check (whichever is appropriate) to swerve at the last minute, intercepting the attack. Resolve the attack as if it had been targeting you, using your AC, hardness, etc.

Fight With Me[Transformer]
You are adept at working with other races while in your normal form.
Prereq: Transform special ability, BAB +1, Large size or greater
Benefit: You have learned to preserve a part of your vehicle form in your normal form. When you transform from your vehicle form to your normal form, a single passanger of at least two size categories smaller than you may stay inside your body in a compartment somewhere somewhat exposed. While inside your compartment, your passenger is treated as having cover (+4 AC) from you. Your passenger may use range weapons from your compartment without taking cover penalties from you. If you have a weapon in your vehicle form, the weapon may also stay in your normal form and be operated by the passenger (thus allowing you to use other weapons).

How would characters like Megatron and Soundwave work? They both turn into far smaller devices that their size would allow. (Going by the G1 cartoon anyways).

I would most likely make that a feat that required the efficient transformation feat as a prereq.

First, good to see more Transformers stuff here. I thought about submitting a stated out Transformer for the Uncon a while back but ran out of time.

Second, would the speeds be roughtly reversed? Small things can move faster then big things usually.

Third, thought I'm a fan from back in the First Generation days, I like the fact that the new movie kept the actual size of the items in mind when they transformed. So nothing got radically larger or smaller, it just moved parts around. The reason that some of them back in the old days got smaller was that they where based on toys that where life sized in a few cases. Since the robots where treated as being the same size, either a radio would have to shrink, or all the cars would have been clown size.

I'm interested to see what you come up with. So, the character adopts a vehicle's DR as per the SRD listing in the vehicle form only? Isn't that dirived from hardness, and wouldn't that be the same regardless of form? Also, why wouldn't cybertronians have lowlight vision, etc. and why would magic heal them? I'm not trying to criticize your write up, ... just curious about the rational. How do these stats compaire with original sources?

The DR thing: I wanted to strike a balance between always having damage reduction and not having any. In d20 modern having DR 3/- is actually pretty sweet when you consider that the biggest normal gun is doing 2d12. Having DR 5, 10, or even 20/- all the time is unbalanced in my opinion. I threw in the feat that lets you retain half if that in robot form, but I made the earliest that you can get it level 12. It’s there because the way I see it, the heaviest hardness that I saw when flipping through the book for a ground vehicle was the Abrams tank at 20, and I considered that at level 12 DR 10/- was ok, but any earlier than that and it might be unbalanced.

I didn’t think about the low light vision at the time, I’ll go in and add it.

Healing magic heals it because of the Spark. Remember, these are living robots. They just don’t get as much out of healing magic as a human would. Also, the Spark makes it so that they couldn’t be forbidden from entering certain classes because of the “Well they’re robots, how could they learn magic” argument. In a setting that is allowing both giant transforming robots and magic, they should have just as much of a chance to develop magic as anybody else.

I can see where you're coming from. The issue with DR is one of scale. In the move for instance, only the toughest armor piercing rounds could harm a transformer. One of the things I liked about the Michael Bay chaos was that it showed what it would be like to be a human amidst those powers squaring off. Transformers aren't on the level of average d20 modern characters, but then, I suppose that's where your level adjustments come it. How would non-vehicle forms, dinosaurs, guns, etc, work? Have you written up templates for those, or have any suggestions?

While I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to handle vehicle forms with weapons included and non vehicle objects, I think I've come up with a feat that works for animal transformations. If nothing majorly broken is pointed out about it I'll add it to the feat list in the second post.

Ok, I think I found a solution for military vehicles, like everything else, I’ve made it a feat. I made the prereqs what they are so that someone could take it before they took tougher stuff. Greased Lightning doesn't have enough scale.

A Dodge Neon based Cybertronian would go from a 220(22) speed to a 222(22) speed with Increased speed, 224(22) with Improved Increased Speed, and 226(22) with Advanced Increased Speed.

A +10 ft. increase in speed is nothing (less than a 1% increase in most cases). Now, a +200 ft. speed increase is better (+20(+2) in the vehicle scale), which would make a Dodge Neon (base 220(22)) fast with increased speed (240(24)), faster with improved increased speed (260(26)), and actually as fast as Mercedes E55 AMG (280(28)) with advanced increased speed.

Sure, the ATV transformer would go from 95(9) to 155(15), almost as fast as a dirt bike, with all three talents, but remember that at character scale, AIS increases a human's speed by 50%, so a comparable increase at vehicle scale wouldn't be out of line.

Perhaps a +15%, +30%, +50% increase in speed. For the example Dodge Neon this would result in 253 (25), 286 (28), and 330 (33) speeds, or comparable with an Acura 3.2 TL at 265 (26), a Mercedes E55 AMG at 280 (28), and an Austin Martin Vanquish at 335 (33).

I have a question for you. How would you handle gestalt transfromers. you know, combiners. I think it should be handled as a feat.

Gestalt(Transformer)
You have been modified to combine with other transformers.
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may combine with a transformer who took the Gestalt Leader feat, and is at least the same, but no more than one size category larger than you. When you combine into your gestalt form, you may select to become an arm or a leg.

Gestalt Leader(Transformer)
You have been modified to serve as the foundation for a Combiner
Prereq: Transformation special ability
Benefit: You may combine with four other transformers, all of whom must have the Gestalt feat, and must be your size category or one smaller. The other four must all be the same size.

The actual rules for being a gestalt would be that you would move up a size category, and lose the ability to assume an alternate form while combined. It would have the same primary alleigence as the transformers that make up its form. Each transformer with a different primary allegience than the most common would reduce the gestalt's intellegence by 2. The same would happen for the secondary alleigence and the third alleigence. Minimum intellegence would be 3. Thus a group with conflicting interests would have a much lower intellegence.

you might have over looked this but you still need to add low-light vision in the main article.

other than that good work!

honestly I just can't see the transformers not having racial HD, I mean come on, they can take a large amount of punishment

I'd say

Fine 1 HD LA +5
Diminutive 1 HD LA +4
Tiny 1 HD LA +3
Small 1 HD LA +2
Medium 2 HD LA +3
Large 4 HD LA +4
Huge 8 HD LA +6
Gargantuan 16 HD LA +8
Collossal 32 HD LA +10

And whether or not you want to stick to the movie version more or less, you could have an optional 'thermal vulnerability' for this race (so you can 'turn it on' or 'off' if it suits the campaign).

In the movie, if not for the whole 'vulnerable to thermal Sabot' thing, humans wouldn't have had anything resembling a chance, but maybe your mileage varies.

I don't think it was so much vulnerability to Extremely High Temperature Highly Specialized Ammunition Designed to Melt Through Heavy Armor, as the afformentioned Sabot rounds were actually doing what they were designed to do.

Then there's also the Liquid Nitrogen throwers that appeared in the flick.

Of course, tying the Cybertronian was required, but when the effect kicks in...

so like all beings they have issues with extreme temperatures, that's not a vulneability that's not having immunity, major difference

It's the third bullet point under the living construct info. I put it there because it's an exception to other living conctructs.

You might want to include some feat that encourages Cybertronian PCs to interact with human PCs. Giant robots blowing each other up is pretty cool, but the interaction and support that each race provides the other is just as cool.

Ride With Me (Transformer)

Fight With Me(Transformer)

Sorry to bump this from a month-long slumber, but I must say: for someone with a fresh obsession with transformers (yay for the new DVD), this is fantastic.

But I have a question: while in vehicle form, do they maintain their Str, Dex, and Con scores? Those do not exist in the vehicle stats as far as I am aware, so how does that work? What determines carrying capacity in vehicle form?

I'm loving this thread.. i came up with some hodgepodge rules meshing the mech and robot rules together, but this seems much more simple. anyway, how about some specialized weapons, upgrades and other equipment?

Sorry about the late reply: A Transformer uses the vehicle's cargo capacity for carrying. The non-vehicle stats are used to resolve things like skill checks, attacks ect. I could have made that more clear. I'll fix that.

I've been sort of busy with real life issues, but I'll see what I can come up with

I have a question about the defense. Being made of metal or in some cases, high grade plastics, what would their hardness be? Would there be a DR? I only ask because this seems like an outstanding write up, and I'm already setting my game for it up. Just gotta hammer out some of the details of character construction. I'm drooling over the prospect of RPing a real slobber-knocker between two full sized cybertronians.

Well, they gain the DR of their vehicle form while transformed ... and there's a feat that grants them half of that DR in their robot form.

Sorry for this rather major bump, but ...

The time for me to use the cybertronians in my D&D-but-in-the-modern-world campaign has come!

But I need some suggestions as to what to stat out some of the basic cybertronians as.

I will be using the movie's versions thematically, as it works really well for my plot (one of the PCs takes the place of Sam Witwiky, for example).

So this is what I have right now:

Optimus Prime: Huge [Semi Truck] Lawful Good Paladin 15
Megatron: Colossal [Alien Jet] Fighter X/Hulking Hurler 5
Jazz: Large [Car] Ranger 10
Starscream: Huge [Jet] ?? 10
Ironhide: Huge [Truck] ?? 6

The PCs will be level 5. Any suggestions on how I might go about statting out the rest of the Autobots and Decepticons, and what you might do to run this?

The movie unfortunately runs a little light on fluff for the other Transformers. I would try to decide what role that I would want each of them to cover, or what roles that needed to be covered for each team ie. Ratchet fills the healer role of the autobots, so cleric would be the easiest way to cover that, but Ironhide was a “weapons specialist,” so you have to decide that means he’s a fighter (who in D&D pretty much only have weapons) or perhaps a ranger because of use of ranged weapons.

Yes, I figured Rachet would be an Artificer, and Ironhide being an Exotic Weapons Master.

Xiuhcoatl, the movie doesn't swing one way or another on this topic, but Starscream should be a higher level than Megatron (or any other Transformer) in fighting classes.
Transformer canon pits him as the best warrior in the galaxy (and "The Pride of the Cybertronian military academy"). It's not his skill that lacks, it's his will. He's a coward and conniving weasel at heart.

This post really adds nothing to the original intent. Sorry. Just my two energon cubes.
