I do know there was an item in 3.5 D&D that wasn't a parachute, but it could slow someone's decent.. it even had a picture to accompany it, it was a single winged device. I can't even remember what book that was in. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

Off the top of my head there would be a descent period of when the PC's left the aircraft to when the PC's deployed their chutes at X altitude and then a gradual descent period of X rounds before reaching the ground... also take into account the actions needed to control their descent from speeding up resulting in less rounds to the grounds to slowng up meaning more rounds till the ground... then take into consideration air currents experienced at X altitude and what topography the PC's will land in; forests, open plains, cities with skyscrapers, small rural villages and the churches cathedral spire, and etcetera meaining things like a gust of high altitude winds blows one PC over the woodlands where he/she lands with them dangling X-feeet above the ground because their chute caught in a tree |

If the PCs are just jumping from an airplane and nothing happens until they land, you could handwave it, maybe have any PCs that lack any pertinent skills end up outside the intended drop zone or stuck in a tree or something. If they are actually engaged in combat or something on the way down, then it's an entirely different matter. |
