| #1beefy_mongooseDec 09, 2008 17:59:42 | I am going to be GMing my first post apocalyptic game and while trying to do treasure it seems that ammo is too high of value. the setting is a gen 0 nuclear armageddon, they are in a phsycopatic outlaw biker gang of 8 members ranging from hd 2-8; the heroes are all level 5. my first encounter is them attacking a caravan and the hostiles have almost no spare ammo due to them riding in vehicals (taking up most of the reward costs there). Does this balance out and make the characters more careful with there shots or is ammo extreamly difficult to come by? im thinking of making the trade values be the cost of 5 rounds instead of a single round, unless you guys think otherwise. Thank you in advance. |
| #2AnimeSniperDec 09, 2008 19:32:08 | Off the top of my head right now, but here is what I have till later. 1. Going by the notion of trading rounds for supplies then I would go the 'Deathlands' route allowing for the players to come across ammunition that they couldn't use in their weapons but could be traded for the needed supplies... food, lodging, etcetera 2. the no spare ammo would make them a little more careful in who they attack, i.e. the guy with the sniper rifle could take out all the guards when they stop/etcetera 3. Fuel would be scarce so most likely either finding small stockpiles of gas or homebrew ethanol/alcohol 4. Rad Sickness depending on how long ago the nukes fell... maybe the group finds a geiger counter 5. Add recompound bows, fire axes, hatchets for the party members to use 6. Molotov cocktails for players... drive by and throw. 7. 8. 9. |
| #3beefy_mongooseDec 09, 2008 20:06:38 | well i will probably let there be a scavenging part to the game but it is going to be mostly a kick down the door style game (testing the post apocalyptic waters before i go head in). currently i dont have plans for a sniper but that may change, sniper doesnt seem very phycopathic gang to me (picture the crazy guys from doomsday). i was planning on having the gang use the switchable dual tank ethanol/ gas thing on the two big vehicals so that was already in the works. radiation isnt going to be a big influence on the game, maybe a little later when i am a little more familiar with the apocalypse or when the players want to maybe go on a long trip to find an area with higher rewards. thanks for the input :D |
| #4AnimeSniperDec 09, 2008 22:33:43 | Just tossing Ideas at you for the campaign... Sniper rifles come in handy even when its not in general combat, hunting for example since in Deathlands you have mutie animals; Bears, condors, ravens, etcetera that can kill you in one go... and don't forget the gargantuan sized spiders that have an internal skeleton like humans! And snipers can be psychopathic... character kills uses hollowpoint rounds with mutie rattler venom in the tip of each... hits them in a non-vital area= slow painful death:D Add recompound bows, fire axes, hatchets for the party members to use... all I have for now! |
| #5beefy_mongooseDec 09, 2008 23:58:02 | Since i was intending most combat to be through vehicals i didnt really need to many melee weapons, but i may change the campaign around a little so they dont use ammo in every encounter. thanks :D |
| #6tema69Dec 10, 2008 8:33:07 | Well, consider the capabilities of producing ammo. What do you need? You need a factory. Does apoc have factories? No. Thus, ammo is rare, expensive, and one-use. Guess what? ...the apocalypse doesn't have everything you need. :D But as the GM, you should change the rules to fit your world. If, for some reason, ammo is much easier to come by in your world, go ahead. Also, since ammo is expensive/rare, use primitive ranged weapons, or the new ranged weapons described in d20 Apoc. |
| #7beefy_mongooseDec 10, 2008 16:00:32 | i suppose im just familiar with the run and gun automatic weapon style of combat instead of the alternative. ill have to tell my characters to plan there character out very carfully . |
| #8tema69Dec 10, 2008 16:16:58 | Well, my players would be in a world of trouble without ammo too, especially because they rarely stop to think about their consumption. That's why I'm considering playing an Apoc game at some point. :D |
| #9narukagamiDec 10, 2008 16:19:33 | What your characters need is a Rock-It Launcher. :P |
| #10beefy_mongooseDec 11, 2008 22:12:05 | well if they were to use bows then having them have the oppertunity to retrieve them would definatly be important, but with vehical combat it may not be worth it. how usefull is shooting out tires bacause it is a tactic my players havnt practiced too much, would it be smart to give them a tire shredder? |
| #11AnimeSniperDec 12, 2008 12:36:42 | Keep the guns for the vehicles and the bows/other weapons for when the PC's don't really need to use them... i.e. they stopped the convoy killing the sec guards and all that is left is the passengers... |
| #12emissary23Dec 15, 2008 15:53:36 | I give my players a specified number of ammo per TU for character creation, depending on the action, theme, timeline, ect of the campaign |
| #13flamepheonix182Dec 15, 2008 22:48:21 | What your characters need is a Rock-It Launcher. :P more like the MIRV!, You will never have to fire it, everyone will just surrender as soon as they see it. On subject, I'm pretty new to d20 modern but shouldn't ammo be hard to find after the apocalypse? |
| #14nodaishoDec 15, 2008 23:38:32 | It really depends on what kind of apocalypse. If a warlord has managed to get control of some resources, he could be cranking out ammunition and guns for his men, if a corporation has managed it, they would be cranking it out for their private army and then selling what is left. If it is very very shortly after the apocalypse, ammo is going to still be in pretty good supply, though it might be hard to find it lying around, unless you search well. I am in a STALKER game, using TUs, and it has been modified so that the price given is for five bullets. In that case, it makes great sense, the zone is the only place in apocalyptic condition, the military is there, Duty is there, with ties to the military, Freedom is there, I suspect they have ties to Germany and the US (camouflage used, though it is common surplus, and guns used), and the scientists have weapons as well. Then there are smugglers, who are likely bringing in supplies in exchange for artifacts. In that situation, ammunition would certainly be in good supply, because all of the world's economies are still producing it. |
