| #1zombiegleemaxMay 04, 2008 23:07:01 | So I saw Iron Man last night... I enjoyed it even though (and possibly because, though my friend, a long-time fan of the series, loved it) I have not read the graphic novels. But this is not the point. The movie gave me an idea (probably one that's already been thought about) for powered armor: treating them as medium-sized mecha. Powered Armor Used primarily by special operations units, powered armor is a highly mobile suit designed to give soldiers an extra edge while minimizing the penalties to stealth capabilities as well as mobility. Size: Medium Size Modifier: 0 Equipment Slots: 5 (1 Left Arm, 1 Right Arm, 1 Boots, 1 Shoulders, 1 head [the torso is always occupied by the pilot]) Equipment Bonus to Strength: +4 Hit Points: 50 Base Speed: 30ft Height: 5-8ft. Weight: 200-1000lbs. Fighting Space: 5ft. by 5ft. Reach: 5ft Purchase DC: 36 Restriction: Mil (+3) (Possibly Res +2) Slam Attack: 1d6 Bludgeoning Special Conditions: Powered Armor with hands can use weaponry designed for medium characters, which require no proficiency with mecha weapons (but still require the normal proficiencies) to use without penalty. Aaaand I'm considering halving the bonuses and penalties from different types of armor, but I'm not sure... That might be too much of a nerf. What do you guys think? Has someone already done this? |
| #2backstabbistMay 04, 2008 23:41:56 | Were you intending for this thing to use RAW Mech weapons like the Warpath or CrudMissiles? Cause them McGuns dont come small enough to mount on Medium, despite being sized just 1 or 2 slots big. |
| #3jekolmyMay 04, 2008 23:43:00 | That doesn't look too bad I guess, I haven't seen it yet.. probably will this weekend after finals. Do you mean to give the wearer a bonus to HP as opposed to flat suit HP in keeping with the base rules? Also I didn't see any DR on the suit, which is something I am sure that the Iron Man suit would definitely have. In my current game I am treating powered armor as medium mecha granting bonus HP to the wearer. I am not running core d20 future rules though, I'm using a mix of d20 Modern and BESM d20 (which I found out you can make just about anything). So I have to agree with your take on the powered armor. Maybe there should be some sort of endurance criteria on the suit? And what PL are you thinking the suit would be, I'm thinking PL 6. |
| #4zombiegleemaxMay 04, 2008 23:52:11 | @ Backstabbist -- I think the slots would probably serve to hold medium sized weaponry or other gadgets... which I suppose probably shouldn't require a Mecha Weapons Proficiency feat to use properly. If you want to make up some heavier weaponry that would, however... @ Jekolmy -- I was just granting the mecha-style HP that wears down before the PC's. Also, DR and hardness for Mecha (and in this case, Powered Armor) come from the materials its superstructure, and armor consist of... so trick it out as you like; the rules for it are in D20 Future. :P As for PL, six would probably work. The Land Warrior Armor is supposed to be late 5, right? |
| #5nobodez_hereMay 05, 2008 1:07:28 | @ Backstabbist -- I think the slots would probably serve to hold medium sized weaponry or other gadgets... which I suppose probably shouldn't require a Mecha Weapons Proficiency feat to use properly. PL 6 works, just remember, that Stark has access to most PL 6 items, so that' why he had such cool power armor/medium mecha in 2008. As for the slots, I'd say that the size restriction for medium creatures works the same for medium mecha, so all but the A3X Dragon, the Corona, and the NKP Puma are out. But, the Dragon, the Corona, and the Puma all fit within the Iron Man model of weapons (based on the stabilizing thrusters). Of course, to achieve a proper suit of Iron Man armor, you're looking at adding about 7 slots to the mix (eight if you count the torso as a slot), and seeing if your GM will allow you to use the cyberware gadgets on mecha equipment to fit all the stuff in. Plus, you're looking at a PL 7 mecha (since the thruster boots are PL 7). So, you've got a Vanadium superstructure (hardness 20), Resilium armor (+6 equipment), Thruster Boots (1 slot), Maneuvering Thrusters (2 slots), Class III sensor system (1 slot), Light Fortification (1 slot), Flares (1 slot), Speed Booster (2 slots), Power Core, Fusion (-2 slots), Integrated AI (Jarvis) (1 slot), Life Support System (1 slot), leaving 2 slots for the weapons. |
| #6tema69May 05, 2008 6:43:26 | Using the D20 Mecha SRD, we ruled that Power Armours are indeed small (Medium actually ) mechas. Mechas are just big power armours, so why not? |
| #7zombiegleemaxMay 05, 2008 11:17:16 | I think we may need to make a whole set of new parts (boosters for instance) if we want to make Iron Man's suit. Also, isn't there a gadget for having a weapon/device as the same item? That way they use up the same slot... they're just more expensive, which isn't a problem for Stark. :P |
| #8jekolmyMay 05, 2008 15:27:05 | Combination is as close as I can get without looking at the book. Its a +4 PDC for the most expensive item and you have to buy each item separately first |
| #9knights_discipleMay 05, 2008 16:38:02 | I think we may need to make a whole set of new parts (boosters for instance) if we want to make Iron Man's suit. You could combine the manuevering thrusters with some kind of energy weapon of choice, mounted in the arms. After all, that's what they were. That leaves a couple of slots free for his arm-mounted mini-missile, and shoulder-mounted micro-rockets. You don't have to have all those, but if you're going for movie-type...*shrugs* |
| #10doomsoughtMay 05, 2008 19:05:15 | future tech has rules for adding new slots, with a medium you can double them. ten slots for DC 41, starks would use them all. Thruster boots with space skin gadgeted on plus deep space thrusters. I'd rule that the high altitude super sonic jets like is same as space for those engines. Use miniaturized weapon gadget to drop those huge weapons down to medium for a price only starks could pay (and he's happy to) 2 sizes smaller and +5 DC If he uses any thing with a magazine he will use extended magazine. Based off the back story he has the cracker jack neural link. |
| #11akodoMay 05, 2008 20:37:15 | for more in the concept of 'medium' or roughly mansized 'mecha' check out the battle armor of Battletech/mechwarrior. Look for Elemental Battle Armor Longinus Battle Armor Achileus Battle Armor or check out some of the pics here (not all of them are battletech, but many are) http://restlesssouls.global-pbem.com/restlesssouls/toe/infantry_barracks.php |
| #12always1sttodieMay 05, 2008 20:50:46 | But this is not the point. The movie gave me an idea (probably one that's already been thought about) for powered armor: treating them as medium-sized mecha. Possible I suppose, I've already done in to my PL7-9 games with DNI (Direct Neural Interface) technology that allows weapon systems mounted to the armor to fire and function through thought. I just used the gadget system and logic as to what I permitted a PC have 'mounted' in or on the armor. Just use avail weaponry that robots and characters can use. If your feeling frisky in a PL9 game use teleport technology to allow weapons of size category larger to be 'beamed' in for a single round of 'spray and pray'. Or even an on board AI with the 'Monkey Grip' Feat loaded that permits the targeting and logic systems to use weapons one size larger without off-setting balance. It's your game, make up whatever you like. |

They're actually another part of the inspiration for this project (albeit I didn't have this idea when I wanted a powered armor in my last D20 Future game. ) Those are some good examples, though. Thank you for posting that.Always1stToDie -- Man you have a depressing name. :P Anyhow, thanks for the advice. I think the monkey grip feat and systems might be cool... perhaps they allow one weapon to take up twice as many slots as normal, and fit on a mecha one size smaller? Doomsought -- Hooray for the gadget system! This is a good point. :P |
| #14madkalnodMay 05, 2008 21:54:37 | There are a number of third-party OGL pdf supplements that use this idea, and have done a significant ammount of the mathematical heavy lifting for you. I recommend the following: From Louis Porter Jr Designs/Devils Workshop: Polymecha: Free Armors of Power Armor Destruction - Includes 5 pre-statted suits of power armor with background info. Polymecha: Free Power Cores for Power Armor Destruction - Using different power cores can give your armor different combinations of run-time, speed, and reliability. Includes 7 new power cores, 6 new power core gadgets, and 3 new pieces of power armor equipment. Polymecha: Free Weapons of Mecha and Power Armor Destruction - 3 new pieces of mecha misc. equipment, 1 new power armor superstructure, 1 new power armor weapon, & 4 new pieces of misc. power armor equipment. Polymecha: Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 1 - Includes basic rules for power armor design, movement and combat, 3 sizes, 8 superstructures, 7 armor types, 3 flight systems, 7 sensor systems, 10 defensive systems, 13 weapons, 18 pieces of misc. equipment, 9 power armor-related feats, and the Power Armor Pilot advanced class. Polymecha: Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 2 - Includes 1 new superstructure, 1 new armor type, 2 new defensive systems, 3 new weapons, 5 new pieces of misc. equipment, and 2 new grappling systems. Polymecha: Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 3 - Includes 1 new superstructure, 1 new armor type, 4 new weapons, and 17 pieces of misc. equipment. Polymecha: Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 4 - Includes 1 new body size, 4 new superstructures, 6 new armor types, 4 new power cores, 3 new sensor systems, 3 new defensive systems, 6 new weapons, and 5 new pieces of misc. equipment. Polymecha: Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 5 - Includes 4 new flight systems, 4 new weapons, and 9 new pieces of misc. equipment. From Ronin Arts: Future Datastream Coolection 2005 - Includes rules for designing power armor as Medium Mecha, 1 new superstructure, 1 new armor, 2 new flight systems, 2 new defense systems, 2 new weapons, 25 new pieces of misc, equipment, and 1 Medium, 2 Large, and 1 Huge pre-statted Mechs. (Also includes pantloads of new stuff for characters, campaigns, gear, environments, genetics, starships, robots, cybernetics, mutations, and aliens, but 18 pages out of 175 are devoted to mecha.) It assumes that all mecha equipment is compatible with Medium Mecha. If you go this route, you'll probably want to look at the following as well: Future: 13 Mecha Devices - Includes 1 new armor type, 3 new flight systems, 1 new sensor system, 1 new weapon, 3 new weapon gadgets, 2 new defensive systems, and 5 new pieces of misc. equipment. Future: 13 More Mecha Devices - Includes 2 new mecha types, 1 new defensive system, 1 new weapon, and 9 new pieces of misc. equipment. Future: Another 13 Mecha Devices - Includes 1 new superstructure, 3 new defensive systems, 2 new weapons, and 7 new pieces of misc. equipment. Future: Mecha 2 - The Ocara - Includes 1 new body type, 5 new pieces of misc. equipment, 3 pre-statted Huge mechs, and 1 NPC. Future: Mecha 3 - The Praetorian Guard - Includes 2 new sensor systems, 1 new defense system, 1 new piece of msc. equipment, 3 pre-statted Huge mechs, and 1 NPC. Future: Mecha Companions - Includes 1 new piece of misc. equipment, 5 new mecha feats, and the Mecha Synergist advanced class. Modern Dispatch #60: Mecha Critical Cards - An optional setup for more flavorful mecha critcal hits. Modern Dispatch #64: Mecah Defects and Quirks - Like traits flaws from Unearthed Arcana, these are are drawbacks for your mecha that nevertheless provide some benefit, from reduced purchase DCs to extra equipment slots. Includes 15 defects and 9 quirks. Also, while they aren't designed to be as customizable as power armor made with the mecha rules, there are some collections of pre-statted suits that may be useful if you don't want to spend all weekend number-crunching just to outfit a squad of stormtroopers that your players will disintegrate on on sight. Battle Armor from ID Adventures - Includes 10 pre-statted suits of power armor. Battle ArmorII: Bigger, Tougher, Cooler from ID Adventures - Includes 12 pre-statted suits of power armor and 3 new pieces of personal gear. Future Armor from Offworld Endeavors - Includes 15 new armor gadgets, 9 new items of defense-related gear (helmets, defense fields), 11 new light armors, 6 new medium armors, 4 new heavy armors, and 10 pre-statted suits of power armor.
