I've been playing D&D for a few years now and i thought i would start some variation in my setting. i bought the d20 core rulebook and decided to DM a new camaign with some friends. everyone understands that gameplay will go slow at the beginnen as were all new to this setting, but we all look forward to using guns, drive cars and use computer gadgets to fight of the monsters.

The first thing i had to get used to was the whole wealth system. no more Money to track has it's advantages i guess and i don't mind giving it a try.
one thing i dislike about this system are the rewards. it seems like the only things you can reward your players with are wealth points and XP. i could maybe but some handy gear in there, but nothing really special... or am i missing something?

what do DM's in D20 modern normally give their players? in D&D you can give magic items that really bring characters forward sometimes... is there a substitute for that in d20 modern?

You can always give the PCs a new contact who can order higher-order mastercraft items than they normally can get, or who has access to vehicles, transport modes, safehouses that can come in rather handy when the going gets tough.

You can also reward them with contacts, reputation and gadgets that may be otherwise unavailable.

I'm new to GM'ing D20 modern as well, but here are a few 'rewards' I've given out or considered:

1) Mastercraft weapons or equipment found on the bodies of bad guys or as payment for a job well done;

2) Maybe give a +1 or +2 increase to wealth score to reflect getting a reward for rescuing the daughter or son of a wealthy businessman; you could also bump up reputation on the same grounds;

3) +1 competence bonus to a skill for creative use of that skill in a very difficult situation, or the same for finding/reading an esoteric book in a hidden villian's library;

4) Bonus feat such as HALO/SCUBA skydiving (hight altitude low opening jump over water) after completing a difficult mini-adventure/training on the feat (thanks to Belly120 and Radjis for this suggestion);
I think a lot of it depends on how many resources are in the campaign and how accessible they are. In my campaign players just escaped from a mental institution (or at least think they did) so even finding food is a reward, and the strange masterwork pistol they found that shoots blue bolts of energy almost made them wet their pants.

IMHO, how much they have to work for the reward makes it more special as well. My players had to fight at a disadvantage to get the mastercraft energy weapon, and then spend time/intelligence check rolls figuring out how it worked: they'd never seen one before. Even though the weapon itself is not that 'special' stat wise, it is special to them because they earned it.

I once gave my players as a reward a contact in the form of a power broker....

Befirending contacts through quests can be ood and even could lead to the main objective

Let's say your doing a drug game. In order to get to the ultimate goal, killing a drug kingpin, they have to first find out where he is. they do this two ways, hrough both espionage and through befriending one of the kingpin's friends

The party befriends and gains trust of the kingpins friends by doing jobs for him; take out a guy here, smuggle some cocaine there, etc. In reward, you get more trust/respect from that friend, who can then later be used against the kingpin

There are many things that could you could reward the Characters with:

1: A superior weapon (Wow! It's a Hatori Hanso sword!)

2: A piece of Prototype equipment (Yep, its a cloaking suit..just don't get it wet!)

3: Something outside of the character's purchase ability. ("Mr. Wells would like to give you this Lambourgini Diablo as a gift...")

4: A medal (The govenor would like to give you a reward).

5: The Girl (or the guy)

6: An exotic pet (Its seems that Mr. Nibbles the albino crocodile has taken a shine to you.)

7: A favor (Mr. Fambouchi is grateful for your savin' his life. If you need ANYTHING, just let me know)

8: A contact: ( Your actions helped the FBI a lot! Here is my card. Give me a call sometime.)

9: Something beyond Legality: (I think that we at the CIA can see that you get that Automatic weapons liscense)

10: Something Fun: (Thanks! that demon would have destroyed our business! Here is a lifetime supply of Buzz Cola!)

Thats just 10 off the top of my head.

Those ideas are great
thank you so much for those ideas and if there's anything else in that head of yours, it would be greatly appreciated. I'll definitly use your ideas as my setting works perfect with that stuff...
