| #1rinian2Aug 22, 2008 8:27:09 | I'm thinking of making a new prestige class based around a taxi driver that drove me to the airport recently and I'd like a bit of help. He drove crazy and I'm wondering if another can think of how to stat out an ability I'm thinking of calling Road Rage that will increase Dex for a short period of time. I want it to be something like a barbarian's Rage but I'm having trouble thinking of what else it will do. Any ideas? (In case anyone's wondering, the reason I chose Dex is because it's the stat used for the Drive skill.) |
| #2tema69Aug 22, 2008 9:01:15 | Aren't there already several classes with abilities that boost Dex? |
| #3nix4Aug 22, 2008 9:52:58 | I'll give this a shot... Based on the barbarian class... Lead Foot (Ex): A road ragers’s top vehicle speed is faster than the norm by +20 mph. Road Rage (Ex): A road rager can fly into a rage a certain number of times per day. In a rage, a road rager temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Dexterity, a +4 bonus to Consitution, and a +2 morale bonus on Will saves, but he takes a –2 penalty to Check/Roll Modifiers due to his reckless nature. The increase in Consitution increases the road ragers’s hit points by 2 points per level, but these hit points go away at the end of the rage when his Consitution score drops back to normal. (These extra hit points are not lost first the way temporary hit points are.) While raging, a road rager cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, Drive and Pilot), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate FX items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. He can use any feat he has except Combat Expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. A fit of rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the character’s (newly improved) Consitution modifier. A road rager may prematurely end his rage. At the end of the rage, the road rager loses the rage modifiers and restrictions and becomes fatigued (–2 penalty to Strength, –2 penalty to Dexterity, can’t charge or run) for the duration of the current encounter (unless he is a 17th-level road rager, at which point this limitation no longer applies; see below). A road rager can fly into a rage only once per encounter. At 1st level he can use his rage ability once per day. At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, he can use it one additional time per day (to a maximum of six times per day at 20th level). Entering a rage takes no time itself, but a road rager can do it only during his action, not in response to someone else’s action. Uncanny Vehicle Dodge (Ex): At 2nd level, a road rager gains a +2 dodge bonus to Reflex saves during a collision. ... |

Road Rage is pretty much understood to be a driver who is angry at another driver and who then attempts to ram that driver, get out and punch that driver, or shoot that driver. Your character concept seems to be a guy who gets really good at swerving through traffic and handling complex driving manuvers, which isn't what most people will think of when you say road-rager |
| #5nix4Sep 14, 2008 8:27:14 | thus a role-playing game where things aren't like real life. Why bother with a Prestiege Class that sucks then? Just give him a bunch of penalties to drive and will checks and be done. If you have a better concept plz post your stats! |
| #6akodoSep 14, 2008 15:51:49 | Of course a role-playing game can be different from real life But language still requires the recipeint to be using the same definition as the sender, which isn't the case here. You can call a grenade a ham sandwitch of you want, but don't be suprised when your players fail to dive for cover when you describe their enemy tossing a ham sandwitch at them. Hence, if you want a driver who can get extra good a few times a day (either because he pulls a Luke Skywalker and gets all zen peaceful, or because he flips out, or be cause he prays to a diety icon he has attached to the dashboard) great! You just need a better name to describe that function |
| #7rinian2Sep 19, 2008 7:02:03 | But roleplaying is also a social activity that should encourage the breaking down of stereotypes and preconceived notions of how things are. I like the term Road Rage because of the way it is turning a negative into a positive (much as Rage does for those poor angry barbarians). The way I picture it is that when the Taxi Driver enters a state of Road Rage, he gets even with those around by avoiding them completely and leaving them in the dust. I've had another couple of ideas about the class as well. I was thinking of having an ability that would allow the Taxi Driver to use either Charisma- or Dexterity-based skills with no penalty when behind the wheel. You know, like Intimidating someone with the way he's driving or Moving Silently across some gravel. Of course, if that ability does come to fruition, I might have to rethink being able to Tumble while in a car... ![]() |
| #8akodoSep 19, 2008 13:50:25 | Main Entry: road rage Function: noun Date: 1988 : a motorist's uncontrolled anger that is usually provoked by another motorist's irritating act and is expressed in aggressive or violent behavior It is not a stereotype it is a definition. If your players speak English they will be confused. You may make a class called 'Cat Burglar' that involves a person stealing by utilizing trained cats, but as the term 'Cat Burglar' has a different definition, it will be confusing |
| #9rinian2Sep 20, 2008 20:02:16 | I guess that your games are filled with bunches of deluded people that believe in something called magic or creatures called dragons or beings called gods. And that's fine. Regular definitions are a well and good for the ho hum world of reality but we're talking fantasy! Fantasy can be anything! If I choose to throw a ham sandwich at someone knowing that my ham sandwiches have the same effect as grenades, you can bet I will use that to my advantage. The element of surprise is a force to be reckoned with. If my Taxi Driver becomes a god among drivers when he gets angry - hooray! However, you have a point about the confusion thing and I believe that will only add to the awesome arsenal of abilities the Taxi Driver will claim! Taxi Drivers unite! Rage against the machines of others! :P |
| #10snowstriderSep 21, 2008 0:03:24 | I have to suggest that the road rage ability grant temporary hit points to the vehicle he/she is driving or piloting. and in the case of our dogmatic companion I would suggest justifying using the term road rage for the ability as the temporary increase in ability from the increase in adrenaline due to becoming excessively angry or distressed while in traffic.:P |
| #11rinian2Sep 21, 2008 9:56:13 | I like the idea that the ability somehow forges a link a between man and machine but, although temporary hit points would be useful, I think something like an improved handling bonus or the like would fit better with the vague concept of what I picture the Taxi Driver as being. It's definitely something to think about... thanks. ![]() |
| #12nix4Sep 25, 2008 9:59:42 | Main Entry: road rage One could argue that Road Rage is a triggered emotional state once you turn the ignition of your car. That for some, it dosn't even require another driver in order for a person to switch into another emotional or mental state. Thus my reply. |
| #13tema69Sep 25, 2008 10:42:34 | Main Entry: road rage I must say that I agree with Akodo. |
