RPG characters playing RPGs

Since about 3 weeks after the dawn of time itself
RPGs have tried one way or another to have a Gaming/Gambling activity inside the RPG for the player characters to participate in gaming. For D&D, the gaming was simple games. But in the Modern world, we have taken the simple Gambling Skill that helps you win a poker game or roulette, and have a vast array of RPG & FPS games that are well beyond the scope of just 3 or 4 sentence Gambling skill.

Maybe its time for KnowledgeTactics:RPG, KnowledgeEarthScience:RPG etc (all class access)
that can use Knowledge skills for benefits and penalties to an InGame mechanic for PCs to play RPGs (while their friends Craft/Research/Heal/FrontalAssault)

Lots and lots of folks in the modern world play RPG/FPS
shouldnt a Modern RPG include a mechanic for PCs playing RPG/FPSs?

I don't really think that a special skill would need to be created for a PC to play a time-killing RPG. As amusing a concept as this is, in-game all your would have to say is "My character Steve sits down at a table and pulls out his RPG books and says to the party, 'who wants to play RIFTS while Roscoe is getting the bullets removed from his butt? Anyone?'"

Now if for some crazy reason that PC was put in THIS situation:

GM - "Lou, I hope your character Billy Gamesquire has his lucky 20-sider on him tonight..."

LOU - "Oooh! He does! Why?"

GM - (chuckles then clears his voice to speak In-Character) "The only way to save your friends lives NOW Billy... is to survive 'Ravenloft'! You and you alone must conquer the castle... otherwise, I will feed your friends to the SHARKS!!!! MWAH-HAH-HAH!

LOU - "AWESOME! I maxed out Billy's Knowledge: Fantasy Games last time he leveled up. I KNEW this was a better way to spend those skill points... and all this time Kelly told me that it was stupid... that I should spend them on something USEFUL like Spot! Hah! Eat it Kelly! Who's gonna save your butts now! (in-character 'Let's just do this Doctor Evil!'!

So the difference, humor aside is what impact would it REALLY have on gameplay? Skills are good when there is a chance of failure involved. But for a group activity in which everyone USUALLY works together...

Now a Modern Time Killer that I'd like some rules for are VIDEO GAMES.

The PCs in my last campaign spent their evening downtime playing each other in Mario Kart. Competing Dex Checks. I COULD see a skill for Videogames but I wouldn't want to spend any points on it unless I was making a Hacker or a Game nut.

This was a fun idea!

I had my players play some Halo multi in-game once. I think I made them attack without their BAB, basically a Dex check to shoot the guns.

Roll for initiative to see who is first to roll for initiative?

maybe use something like the d20 future VR-Net rules? they seem like a pretty good mechanic base for PC's playing games within the game.

RPGs could use Int & Wis checks (int for encounters, wis for challenges)
Vid FPS could use Dex
Vid RTS could use Wis ( and maybe some int / dex)
WoW would be just Con (how long you can forego eating and sleeping)
... and most could use some CompUse for getting internet cheat codes or minmax-Munchkin

How do you role play a forum flame war? Diplomacy with a synergy from Knowledge:relevant subject?

There is no diplomacy in a flame war, and most of the time, no knowledge in the relevent subject either. :P

What skill do you use for petty insults and misinformation? Bluff? :P

My friends, this seems like a job for Knowledge: Popular Culture!

Yes, K:PC is your be-all, end-all resource for all your meta-rpg needs!

(Yes, I played in a game once where the first scene was the PCs sitting around a game table finishing up a session of D&D. It then proceeded to a rip-roaring adventure including a run-away luxury boat with a small server farm onboard, a helicopter with a mounted machine gun (belt-fed, definitely belt-fed), and strange aquatic creatures assaulting the land.)

That actually sounds like a hilarious way to start a game. Nice.

Knowledge of the subject is irrelevant at best and a hindrance at worst. The purpose of a flamewar is to make the subject unpalatable to the opposing parties.
